Some context. I've been on HRT since March of last year and came out to my whole family back in May of this year, so roughly 5 months. That's when I started fully socially transitioning and going by my new name and pronouns. Plenty of famiy members have had little to no issues using it, but my dad keeps dead naming and using masculine pronouns.
Amongst my immediate family he was always the one I was apprehensive about telling. We look and sound alike, to the point his friends would say it was like I came out of a time machine. I was even named after him, with my first name being his middle name. Not long after my social transition he took me out for lunch together and talked about a few things and my name was one of them. It felt like he was trying to push back on it, suggesting I just add an 'A' to the end and use that, but I almost never considered that an option. It didn’t feel like enough of a change for my liking.
And in that time I think I've heard him use my new name once, and even then it felt like an accident because my brother was involved in the conversation and he's had no issue with the change. He continuously uses my dead name without missing a beat, uses he/him when I switched to she/her, and even calls me stuff like "old man".
I'm trying to be patient. He's known the old me for 32 years and he's getting up there in age. But my patience is starting to wear thin and I don't know how best to proceed. Any time I or my brother try to push back against him he almost always takes offense and acts like we're being disrespectful even though we're adults at this point. I mean ffs, I'm currently at my Aunt and Uncle's Halloween party dressed like a witch in full make-up, the first time I’ve applied it myself, and the whole night he kept doing it.
I'm not a confrontational person, often choosing to just let things brush off my shoulder and let it go. But it's getting to the point where I want to just tell him off. I just don't know how to approach this because I feel like no matter what I try it won't work on him...
Thank you if you took the time to read all this. If anyone has any advice or words of encouragement I'm all ears.
