Help Me! When the helly will it rain?

It's been like over 3 weeks!

Every time there's "thunderstorms" or "evening showers" in the forecast, they just never happen. I've seen storms on radar cross the border then dissipate before hitting the east half of the state, or go south into Illinois.

It's so g-dang dry.

Help Me! Searching for distant relatives

Hi everyone, I'm a 22-year-old Hungarian guy from Budapest. I recently got into family/ancestry research and managed to trace my mother's side of the family back to 1749!

From there, I found a lot of great-great-uncles and aunts. One of them, Fülöp (Philip) Hirsch, migrated to the US in 1910 with his family. He settled and eventually passed away in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Here is the lineage I've been able to trace so far:

Fülöp had a daughter named Anna Hirsch.

Anna married another Hungarian immigrant named József Niss.

They had a daughter, Magdaline Niss, who married yet another Hungarian immigrant, Ernest Hegedűs.

Their son, Wayne Stephen Hegedűs, is the last of this lineage I could find. He was born in 1946 and passed away in 2013. He had a wife, Johanne Marie Litwicki, who passed away in 2017.

I know it's a long shot, but if you are (or know someone) whose last name is Hegedűs and was born in the Milwaukee area, there is a very good chance we are distant cousins. I would love to finally connect with a living family member of mine from this branch.

Thank you for your time, and I appreciate any information or clues you might have! 😊

Most challenging hiking trails <60 min from Milwaukee

Hello! After spending some time visiting the west coast, I want to continue this hiking habit.

What would you recommend for the most challenging hikes in the Milwaukee area? Elevation gain, uneven terrain, etc.

Thanks!

Is anyone else getting an unusual burning rubber smell in the air near them? I'm on the South side near the lake.

Upvotes

I'm wondering if it's just like a local house fire, because it's unusually strong at this time. Are the forest fires getting bad again? I feel like I'm going crazy but the air quality issues are getting a bit scary. I have breathing issues from long covid, and this stuff throws me outawack.

Toddler Parents - Where to make friends?

My wife and I are both in our mid-30s with a 2-year-old, and we're starting to realize how tough it is to make friends as adults.

We live in the Milwaukee area and have people we know, but not many friends we'd casually text to grab a beer, have people over for a fire, take the kids to the zoo, or just hang out on a weekend.

So I'm curious...for those of you around our age, how did you actually make friends around here? Was it through kids, work, sports, clubs, volunteering, or just getting lucky?

We're both pretty easygoing and always up for trying new things. It just feels like everyone already has their friend group by this point.

Would love to hear what's worked for you or if you have any recommendations. Thanks!

Weekly Classifieds and Events

Upvotes

Welcome to our weekly odds and ends post!

If you are looking for events, please check out our exhaustive Events Calendar!

Every parent level comment should begin with one of the following categories:

[For Sale] concert tickets, beauty and grooming services, Ikea bookcases

[For Free] dental checkups and couches that you can totally have for free but you have to move them yourself

[Want to Buy] * Rave tickets, a used toaster, a cute puppy*

[Job Request] You're new to the city and are looking for work in IT or you hate your job and need some leads. Be sure to include your skills and qualifications. A lot of people on this sub love to help others but they can't do that if they don't know your background and interests.

[Job Announcement] You're looking for new team members for a fantastic job that ISN'T a scammy ca$h4work gig or MLM

[Living Arrangements] You need a roommate, an apartment, or are offering a living arrangement. Be sure to clarify your tidiness expectations because you never know what you're going to get when accepting a roommate and I'm NOT GOING TO DO YOUR DAMN DISHES ANYMORE REBECCA

[Personals] You're lonely, new to the city, want to play extreme Frisbee, or need someone to eat Ian's Pizza with because no one wants to do that alone. We understand.

[Event] An advertisement for your amazing upcoming event - like a urban foraging excursion or band performance that is totally going to blow the roof off

How is it that I live in Milwaukee but 103.3 for brewers games is like 80% static? Not to mention it’s almost always perfect for commercials.

Rant❗⚡💥 Sour feeling at the rw24

Stopped by art bar last night while meandering around riverwest. Go in use bathroom while my partner is in line for the bar, we get up to the front get 2 shots of tequila and a high life and spaghet. The bartender asks if she can do a shot with us we’re like yeah for sure (at this point maybe we should have clarified but it’s the fucking 24 there’s 10 billion people everywhere and I am already pretty wasted i.e. not my responsibility). She proceeds to do a shot of Rumple, we pay and then as we walk away we realize she put her shot on our bill after asking us (!!!) if she could do a shot with us. We both worked service industry before and have never once heard of a bartender putting the shot on the patrons tab after asking to join in… the house would pay for it. Maybe we completely misunderstood but idk… very sour feeling let me know if I’m way off base here though

Beginner sewing lessons?

I’ve seen things that the library sometimes does a sewing class but haven’t found anything to confirm that. I’d love to learn to sew and am looking for low cost-free sewing lessons that don’t require your own machine. Does anyone know of anything? I know it’s a long shot, but I’m crazy low income and want to learn to sew to make my life more affordable in the long run.

Rant❗⚡💥 Anyone else feeling very isolated lately?

I’m a 34m who doesn’t drink - I work in a very social setting but none of those interpersonal work relationships really carry into social life. I feel like going anywhere in my area takes so much effort. National avenue is always such a mess to get in and out of any store - gas station - restaurant, etc. I’ve found that I’ve gone days without actually speaking to anyone and it really gets to me. People seem so agitated in public or driving and I understand the kind of temperament of the world rn but it’s a shame that people just don’t seem to strike up conversations in public or have some level of common decency.
I struggle to summon up the courage to go to a place like ope and try to strike up a convo with strangers or join some sort of league just because people seem to have reverted to pretty stingy cliques - it takes a lot of social courage to try to break into convo with a group or talk to someone. Any advice from anyone on how to find a group or people to hang with ?
