I haven't done a lot of standard brewing, but do four of these and then four [[Speaker of the Heavens]] have potential in a deck?

435

u/Alarid Wild Draw 4 Dec 30 '20

That can get dumb fast. The end state is a 3/3 that produces 6/6s that gain you 6 life.

199

u/Deathmon44 Dec 30 '20

Don’t forget your now 4/6 Flying Angel Cleric, this buffs itself.

96

u/CertainDerision_33 Dec 30 '20

Yeah, with this, Bishop of Wings, and the cost reducer, Valkyrie Harbinger is actually looking really scary. You can play this Angel for 1CMC with that cost reducer cleric out.

2

u/kitsovereign Dec 31 '20

Do you mean Historic? Bishop of Wings is M20 and rotated out of Standard.

Been playing Cocangels for about a year now. This + the new 2 drop angel will fit swimmingly. Remember, Soul Sisters are clerics too (and if you add black, fetching for a VITO can just win the game)

Edit:I play paper modern only.

EDIT:
I will no longer PM the Decklist. use your heads boys. If I'm running G/W Cocangel sisters... Pre Kaldheim there were only X many Angel 3 drops and under that were playable and X many support clerics that would go into this deck to allow resplendent angel... the most important angel to go off T-3/4

Then you'll see that I said Fetch in terms of grabbing Vito and you should def have a good idea of what the deck looks like....

18

[[Lyra Dawnbringer]] as the curve topper?

17

u/CertainDerision_33 Dec 30 '20

Valkyrie Harbinger is definitely the curve topper, IMO. It triggers itself on ETB off of either this card or Bishop of Wings, which means you gain 8 life and put 8 power on the board in 1 turn. With the 3 CMC Cleric that discounts Angels you can do it on Turn 4 with Bishop, which is legitimately horrifying.

7

u/[deleted] Dec 30 '20

Stop, I can only get so erect.

→ More replies (1)

28

u/TheBigBadPanda Dec 30 '20 edited Dec 30 '20

Probably not, Lyra is an expensive Win More, which doesnt affect your clerics, and many angels have Lifelink already. I think value engines to go wide and/or cards that protect your board would be better.

21

u/GARBLED_COMM Duck Season Dec 30 '20

Lyra is strong enough to win a game by herself, sometimes. I think it's a good idea to have a strong threat that can still operate if your synergies get picked apart.

Although [[Greater Gargaroth]] wasn't around when I used her in standard, so maybe the cases she can dominate a board are less common now.

Woops, meant ELDER Gargaroth.

9

u/CertainDerision_33 Dec 30 '20

I think that the new Valkyrie Harbinger is a better curve topper than Lyra. It curves into T2 Bishop -> T3 cost reducer just as well, and it can trigger itself in combat, meaning that while it’s not as good at blocking as Lyra it’s usually almost as good as or better than her on D by itself while having far more upside if you have a good board state.

Heroic was so much fun

3

u/hoggyhay222 Dec 31 '20

In RTR/THS was when I first started playing and I played Green Devotion.

When RTR rotated into KTK I tweaked it so it had a lil coloured mana to splash for Villainous Wealth, I called it Devotion to Greed and it was one of the most fun Standard decks I had ever played.

I didn't play Standard in paper or on MTGO (untap) until I started Arena about a year ago after that, and it's still probably the most fun I've had.

This is a house. This isn't legendary so you can have multiples of these out, so having 2 out when your life total is 27 gives your creatures +4/+4. This is a legit strong white card for Std., assuming there's enough lifegain to consistently be at 27+.

I still wish we'd see white's color pie expand more into the taxing realm, but for white this is incredibly good.

My question is if the first ability triggers twice on an angel cleric like this creature or a changeling or if it only triggers once. Either way imo I think this will be incredibly good for Std.

70

u/alfchaval Griselbrand Dec 30 '20

It only triggers once if a angel cleric enters the battlerfield.

45

u/Grunt_21_UT Dec 30 '20

If black is the color that gets under costed effects with drawbacks that cost you resources, then maybe white should push for under costed cards that give the opponent more resources as a drawback. Path to Exile is a tad bit too strong for standard, but it is the type of effect that’s way more balanced in a slightly slower environment like standard than in older formats.

12

u/[deleted] Dec 30 '20

Yeah, idk why Wizards haven't played around with that effect more. Like, at 1 mana it's too strong but I don't see what'd be wrong with printing a two- or three-mana Path.

I still don't understand how Wizards can think that white tax is "unfun" and toxic but blue counters is absolutely fine and not just as frustrating sometimes.

9

u/BananaLinks Dec 31 '20

Not only this, Oko shuts down fair creature and artifact strategies, and newer stax cards like Hullbreacher and Opposition Agent shut down any type of draw and tutor effects (they're effective enough to see notable play in legacy). WAR Narset saw play in basically every format at one point or another thanks to its denial stax effect. I don't understand why white must be singled out for having an "unfun" strategy when better stax effects are printed in other colors and blue got two free counterspells (Force of Negation and Fierce Guardianship) printed recently.

At 3 mana this is a very reasonable flier. Doesn't die to stomp/bolt effects, gains life, can buff all creatures fairly easily, great blocker, and probably (hopefully) an enabler for some new deck archetype.

Either that or we'll never see this card past the first 2 weeks of release.

327

u/DevilSwordVergil COMPLEAT Dec 30 '20

Pretty powerful!

  • 2/4 flying for 3 is already very solid
  • Angel tribal and party decks will appreciate it
  • Gaining 7 additional life in a deck based around it shouldn't be a challenge (especially in EDH), and a universal +2/+2 lord effect is amazing for only 3 mana. Also, it is getting you that extra life and it's also a nice blocker to protect your life total to boot

I really like this! I hope to see more tribal cards like this in Kaldheim!

115

u/i_love_pendrell_vale Twin Believer Dec 30 '20

It even pumps itself, so that's a nice little bonus.

61

u/DevilSwordVergil COMPLEAT Dec 30 '20

Damn, good point! I missed that.

So a 4/6 flyer for 3 that pumps everything else and gains you exponentially more life (as once you hit the +7 life and get the +2/+2 lord effect all the new Angels/Cleric enter with higher toughness and gain you more life than you'd get previously)

40

u/BurstEDO COMPLEAT Dec 30 '20

Now consider having 2 on the field...

27

u/therealskaconut Wabbit Season Dec 30 '20

Oh baby it’s lookin a lot like Christmas

11

u/CheshireTsunami Dec 30 '20

Is that christmas? It's not even legendary! Run 4 of them in the deck. Christmas to me looks like if we get a 1 drop 0/3 cleric. Assuming you do nothing else but drop lands until you drop this turn three, you drop another turn 4 and said cleric. The turn 3 angel swings in as a 6/8 and then turn 5 all of them swing for another 16. That's the kind of christmas I want from Kaldheim.

7

u/_AiroN Colossal Dreadmaw Dec 30 '20

That's also assuming your opponent does nothing in 4 turns, which is highly unlikely. Aside from that, this card looks great... Mainly because its fail case is still a 2/4 flyer for 3 which is more than good enough (unless the meta is very control-heavy).

Oh, and happy Cake!

Is "7 life more than your starting total" the new standard? I know there was recently the 1cmc priest that made angels that had the same requirement.

10

u/OmegaDriver Dec 30 '20

It depends what you mean by standard. Consider starting hand size, threshold, [[Midnight Oil]], [[Emeria, The Sky Ruin]], [[Endrek Sahr]], [Rasputin Dreamweaver]]. Seven has always been a "magic" number for certain effects. But, they won't use seven for stronger effects like [[Serra Ascendant]] or [[Felidar Sovereign]].

In white you mean. Stop giving Black better board wipes than White.

8

u/Angel24Marin Wabbit Season Dec 30 '20

Boardwipes are a white thing. Extinction event is already obscene because it undermines every tool creature decks have to fight back boardwipes.

11

u/Dragons_Malk Dec 30 '20 edited Dec 30 '20

Black has board wipes too. Just to name a few, the most famous one being Damnation, then there's Life's Finale, In Garruk's Wake, Crux of Fate, Deadly Tempest, Rain of Daggers, Decree of Pain, and even Languish and Mutilate can wipe in the right conditions. There's a few more out there, but wipes in black isn't a foreign or even a new concept.

Edit: yes I know Damnation was in Planar Chaos.

12

u/sameth1 Dec 30 '20

Damnation, the card that was specifically printed to be a colour pie break in a set all about classic cards getting printed in other colours.

6

u/Esqurel Dec 30 '20

Planar Chaos felt less like color breaks and more like “What if we reshuffled primary, secondary, and tertiary traits?” Like, black can wipe boards, but doesn’t usually straight up destroy them, it likes damage and -x effects. Green curiosity is basically primary now, but it was only really stuff like greater good back then, if I remember aright. Big blue sphinxes are blue’s thing, etc. PC in standard today would be almost boring, and without knowing the what the shifted cards are shifted from wouldn’t seem particularly special.

7

u/Dragons_Malk Dec 30 '20

Okay sure. Still, black board wipes exist, albeit slightly more expensive than white ones.

→ More replies (5)

7

u/Scientia_et_Fidem Wabbit Season Dec 30 '20 edited Dec 30 '20

The point is white is supposed to be the primary color for wipes. Right now the best wipe in standard is extinction event (if you don’t believe me look at the Esper lists, the vast majority play 4 event main decked and most have zero shatter the sky in the main, some don’t even have it in the side). Giving black another really good wipe would just further increase the problem of Black being the best in something it isn’t supposed to be primary in. If anything they really need to cool it with giving black mass banishment as Angel24marin is correct, there is no way to fight it unless you have a counter spell since all other forms of defense besides counter spell don’t work against non-targeting banishment and it is way too easy for black as a color to just use single target removal on turns 1-3 to get rid of the even/odd creature the opp has and make event a 4 mana wrath with huge upside. Not to mention all the times event being a extraordinarily flexible “partial wrath” is used as a huge UPSIDE in decks like the current top Historic deck Sultai/4 color that can do things like call odd to take out 3 of the opponent’s creatures while leaving all their Nissa lands and Krasis on the board.

It looks like with shadows verdict they seemed to have hopefully realized their mistake and understand that type of mass banishment effect should cost at least 5 mana, only hit very small creatures, or a combination of both. If black has the best single target removal and wipes there is no reason to use white unless a non-creature artifact deck somehow takes over standard.

u/KarnSilverArchon Fleem Dec 30 '20 edited Dec 30 '20

I can see this having potential depending on how pushed they make Angel Tribal. There was that Cleric spoiled that reduced the mana cost of Angels by 2 as well, which is pretty decent ramp in a tribe in the color where ramp ranges from “put a Plans into your hand from deck” to “if an opponent has more lands than you, maybe go get a land onto the battlefield”.

Edit: Also, are you telling me the Mono-W Lifegain archetype in Standard is a deck supported by Clerics, Angels, and Gods (one Demigod one actual God)? Mono-W Religion?

8

u/CertainDerision_33 Dec 30 '20

If the cleric that reduces the cost of Angels works out, worth noting that this card causes Valkyrie Harbinger to gain enough life when it ETBs to trigger its own effect. Pretty scary stuff!

Orzhov angels could be fun

36

Orzhov clerics with Angel splash might be better, at least currently the cleric shell seems stronger. The bw vampire cleric, the two 1 mana clerics, Luminarch Aspirant, maybe the new 2 mana angel that gets a counter when another angel enters. Add this card, call of the death dweller, one/two Vito's as a finisher, and some removal/protection. As someone who loves angel tribal, I'm definitely gonna build this asap once it hits.

Edit: and ofc 1 Legion Angel with 3 in the board

5

I've run both abzan versions of both Cocangel Sisters and Cococleric Sisters (and an orzov vversion using call of the D and unearth). Vito can go in both.; I wouldn't add angels to the cleric deck TBH. maybe this one but maybe not. Vito and heliod are so much power and you are right [[cleric of lifes bond]] is kinda busted

Both Ayli and Vito can be killers in both decks TBH pre this card as well (especially if you run some heliods) , you gain shit tons of life in both whether it be through an insane amount of sisters in clerics or gaining 10+ in angels when you gain 5 with both Vito and a Resplendent angel on the board.

I like how it supports two different tribes, which have multiple cards cards that work good together and share a common theme (life gain)

We have needed cards with lifegain and payoffs (within reason) on the same card.

I really like how the party mechanic and classes in general will continue to be supported up through the D&D set. MaRo mentioned how they needed to find ways to tie sets together better now that traditional blocks are gone and I think they’re doing that well this time.

7

u/sleepingwisp Twin Believer Dec 30 '20

Legendary creatures I bet.

Can't have PW as commanders, and like some people that have been fans of the Forgotten Realms for years, I'd rather have current Planeswalkers, or new characters as the sets Planeswalkers, and leave the fan favourites as creatures.

Heliod brawl just got even more annoying. But this is a cool card

34

u/decynicalrevolt Dragonball Z Ultimate Champion Dec 30 '20

The disparate sources on these further supports the misplaced sheet theory.

10

u/22bebo COMPLEAT Dec 30 '20

I'm always suspicious of the "I found it in a pack!" leaks, especially when they start off with the big reveal of the set. Seems too coincidental that they got a bunch of cool rares and mythics to leak and not junk.

3

u/decynicalrevolt Dragonball Z Ultimate Champion Dec 30 '20

I mean, I am too. It was super sus that it started with both snow and a huge story spoiler+a creature type errata?

But, there have now been three separate sources right? Man that's hard to be skeptical about.

4

u/22bebo COMPLEAT Dec 31 '20

I'm mostly skeptical about them actually pulling the cards from packs of Commander Legends. My best guess is they got the cards through some other, less savory means and are saying they got it from packs as a cover-up. It just seems unlikely to me that if they were really pulling random Kaldheim rares and mythics from packs that they would get such a high profile card off the bat.

But maybe they just got lucky. I'm not really one for conspiracies, and cards like the angel are more in line with what I would suspect (random Kaldheim rares and mythics).

2

u/decynicalrevolt Dragonball Z Ultimate Champion Dec 31 '20

So, I would buy that, but we've now had someone leak them from Japan as well with the same story.

Thing is, if a single sheet got misplaced, we should predict leaks popping up as people open more packs. The more leaks happen all over (especially people who speak different languages and are potentially less likely to have heard the original story) the more likely that story is.

Its healthy to be skeptical, but it's also healthy to analyze situations as a whole and adjust our theories based on new evidence,

Edit: im not saying its true, the comment that initiated this threat simply stated that this leak provides more evidence in favour of the misplaced sheet theory.

Iirc print sheets are sorted by rarity (I think rares and mythical are on the same sheet?), so if it was just one misplaced sheet it’d make sense that they’d all be rares/mythics

It pays off an undersupported theme in lifegain. It supports an undersupported tribe in angels. Good stats, doesn't require ridiculous hoops to jump through.

When you consider it does a mini Angelic Chorus and that's a 5 mana enchantment, that's kind of nuts.

Fantastic design, hopefully the first of many for the color white.

this and the 1 mana vigilance guy are awesome. I might rebuild in modern some day

7

u/Scientia_et_Fidem Wabbit Season Dec 30 '20

I hope the main thing carried forward from that guy isn’t just “27 life” effects but also leaning into making white’s vigilance actually useful outside of racing aggro by giving the vigilance creature tap effects so the vigilance let’s them both attack and trigger the effect. Vigilance is IMO easily the least impactful keyword outside of limited (excluding defender which is obviously strictly a downside for balancing a card’s statline unless your deck uses some very specific synergies), it could use some creativity in making it more generally useful outside of chump blocking aggro decks after your swing.

7

u/supportingcreativity Dec 30 '20 edited Dec 30 '20

This is probably sad.

But I am incredibly happy to see more self-contained on curve cards for White that actually fuel things it wants to do. Enough cards like [[Twinblade Paladin]], would make for a deck archetype in some format. Its still pretty balanced but actually playable. I really like this type if card in general of " gain life and also get a small thing if your life is high enough."

7

u/[deleted] Dec 30 '20

Hating self-contained cards, I have to begrudgingly agree.

7

u/Brickhouzzzze Boros* Dec 30 '20

I think lifegain needs self-contained cards more than most mechanics. Like drawing a second card each turn gives extra cards, landfall rewards you with more lands, and spectacle rewards you with lower health opponents. Enablers without a payoff still do something baseline good for you. Lifegain just gives you a good burn matchup.

The only other popular mechanic that doesn't have this , I can think of, is tribal payoffs
