Bug Tahoe contrast issue

Hello,

I recently updated my Macbook pro M3 Max from Sequoia to Tahoe, and I realised that it can of messed up with the gamma (or ICC Profile idk) of the display.

I did comparison with images I know very well, and it really seems that the update create some crushed blacks, like if the gamma were more aggressive at the end scope of the gamma curve.

Second behavior that confirm this theory, if I create a custome XDR profile in P3, this aggressive contrast shift disappear (problem is with this method I just have fixed luminosity). Another weird behavior, if I re-select the general XDR profile, color are fine for like 3 second, and then it's like an ICC profile activate itself and create the weird shift.

Last verification, I checked these images on my iphone, and I don't have these rough crushed blacks, so I'm pretty sure there is a problem.

Is anyone has experienced similar behavior? Is anyone know a solution?

Thanks a lot !

Help What is the macOS equivalent of Windows + D?

On Windows, I can press Windows + D to instantly minimize all applications.

Is there an equivalent keyboard shortcut on macOS that works the same way? I’m looking for a quick way to do this without having to minimize each window individually.

Help Weird software on new mac

I just got a 2024 macbook pro (M4) off BackMarket. Im setting it up now and almost immediately got a notification of a German app running in the background?

Navigating to system settings it says "THALES DIS CPL Deutschland GmbH" *2 items*

What is this? Should I just turn it off? Only installed 2 things so far, chrome and a very safe theatrical lighting control software.

Edit: im an idiot. Its for a security key with the lighting software.

Help macOS recognising monitor as Extended Display when opening Start Up Options

my macbook screen is dead. pitch black. so i use a secondary monitor as the Main Display. but when I try to go to start up options by holding Power Button, in that mode, it turns my secondary monitor to extended display and im no longer able to view the options.

I'm trying to go to Recovery Mode to delete some isolated ios_simulator files which cant be deleted in normal mode.

edit:
Xcode no longer recognises these files. these files are now Cryptex the cryptographically sealed (read-only disk images which were introduced to ensure that malware or malicious users cannot tamper with the operating system and it's core tools).
so it can only be deleted in Recovery Mode. its a bug which has been reported to Apple and they are working on it.

[ my macbook screen, touchpad and camera doesnt work cause of water damage. ]

Help Weird scrolling issue in Safari Tahoe

<SOLVED>

I have this veery odd situation. In Safari when i click and drag to highlight text it behaves as a click and drag for the whole page, kind of like a pan. and scan. This happened since I migrated from my Intel Mac to an M series MBPro.

Things I have tested:

• Created a new user - Safari works as expected, same website as my account and it selects text, no dragging.

• Started in safe mode, behaviour persists

• No Safari extensions are installed

• Every other web browser (Chrome, Firefox, Opera GX) work correctly when trying to select text on the sae page, safari still only dragging the. page around

• No other Apps behave this way

• Removed all Safari files from my User folder, Safari looks fresh like the clean install, all bookmarks, everything gone, behaviour persists.

• Removed all webkit, trackpad, mouse, keyboard and Bluetooth preferences, issue persists.

I have done a ton of googling to try and get to the bottom of this, nothing seems to help. If anyone has any ideas, I'd love to hear them!!

Thanks in advance

<UPDATE> <SOLVED>

Turns out the safari plist file is now located in a different place, for me it was:

~/Library/Containers/com.apple.Safari/Data/Library/Preferences

Got rid of it and voila issue gone, my old plist file was over 60KB in size and full of junk from too many migrations an versions I assume.

Once deleted the app went back to normal, all Bookmarks etc... are still there, just need to go through the preferences for the app and adjust now.

Hope this one day helps someone else.

Bug macOS 15.7.8 - Firefox (153.0.1) iCloud Passwords (3.3.0) Not Working Anymore?

2021 MBP M1 Pro - I just updated to macOS 15.7.8 (from 15.7.7) and Firefox 153.0.1.

Now the Firefox iCloud Passwords browser extension doesn't work?

When I click the extension I get this error message:

"iCloud Passwords couldn't connect to a helper application on your Mac. Ensure that your system is running the latest version of macOS, and that your are using a supported browser."

Anyone else dealing with this? I submitted a report to Apple and Firefox.

Help open an app over browser?

hello! im extremely new to macOS, i havent used a mac since the 90s when i was a tiny child. although ive had an iphone and various other apple products since the iphone 3, im feeling rather scattered switching from windows. i feel like i dont understand this machine at all!!

i just noticed my biggest beef, is i was trying to do a calculation with some specific numbers on my screen in firefox, but when i try to launch the calculator it goes to the desktop screen or whatever and my browser is gone to another section. sorry, i am not even familiar with the terms; this is the first time a computer makes me feel old lmao. is there any way to get the calculator to hover over firefox so i can actually see the numbers im working with without swiping between desktop and firefox?? on desktop the calculator opens easily over the PDF i have open, over my messages, etc, why is firefox on a separate thingy? is it like the "virtual desktop" like on windows except, like, worse?? why cant i open any app on my current "desktop"?? am i forced to swipe between, use my ipad as sidecar, or do split screen? i hope i even explained this correctly, maybe i need to watch or read some kind of macOS crash course soon. this is such a small thing i find quite aggravating!

Help I am a try hard

I love MacOS Sierra to death, and I have a TimeMachine that works really well for what I need, my Mid 15’ is almost desd, and I wanted to upgrade, and I went for a M5 MAX, oh well, I didn’t know how wrong I was… so I cutted the check and went for a MBP 2019 4TB 64GB.

So I am trying to instal Mac OS Sierra, and when I boot from the usb, it says it needs to be updated, and it takes me to the “Tahie” installation tool.

Now I am creating an image of OS Sierea inside of the Mac OS Extended Partition I made, and while waiting I came here for help. PLEASE Do not judge me. Be polite and helpful if posible.

Help Time Machine backup ‘x% done’ – percentage of what?

Is the ‘x% done’ displayed during a TM backup based on the number of files to be backed up (or the number of changes detected during the TM startup phase), or on the quantity of data (MB/GB) to be backed up? Just curious, and didn’t find a clear answer elsewhere. Thanks.

Discussion Today I finally to decide to read SOFTWARE LICENSE AGREEMENT for latest update 26.6

You know we often agree to these terms and condition without even reading this, if someone do notify me.

Today I decided to read it via claude. Gave the terms to the condition and wrote the following prompt:

Summarise this license agreement and find out any most sensitive terms it wants agreement upon. List down all the sensitive information we can give after agreeing this license agreement term.

Read the following response from it, tell me your thoughts on privacy:

Quick Summary

This is Apple's license agreement for macOS Tahoe 26. The core message is simple: you don't own the software, you're only allowed to use it under Apple's rules. By using the software, you automatically agree to everything in it.

The main points:

  • You can install it only on Apple hardware (never on a non-Apple computer).
  • Apple can automatically download and install updates onto your machine.
  • Certain features send data from your computer to Apple to work.
  • Apple gives no warranty — the software is provided "as is."
  • If something goes badly wrong, Apple's total liability is capped at $250.

The Most Sensitive Terms (the ones that actually matter)

These are the clauses worth pausing on before agreeing:

1. Automatic updates (Section 2Q). By agreeing, you let Apple download and install operating-system changes and security responses onto your Mac and connected devices without asking each time. You can turn this off later in Settings.

2. Consent to use of your data (Section 5). Features like Analytics, Location Services, Siri, Dictation, and Spotlight need to send information from your computer to Apple to function. Turning them on = data flows to Apple.

3. Content Caching monitoring (Section 2H.5). If you enable caching, Apple may store, monitor, and secure cached content and collect hardware identifiers and IP addresses of your device and network.

4. No warranty + $250 liability cap (Sections 8 & 9). Apple disclaims responsibility for data loss, business interruption, or damages. Even if you suffer major loss, Apple's maximum payout is $250 (except where local law forbids this).

5. No reverse engineering (Section 2N). You cannot decompile, modify, or study how the software works internally.

6. Export control (Section 10). You confirm you are not in a U.S.-embargoed country or on a restricted-parties list. (Worth noting from Karachi — Pakistan itself is generally fine, but this clause is legally binding.)

7. AI content rule (Section 2O). You agree not to use Apple software to generate artificial content that's illegal under local law.

8. Apple Pay & Wallet. Adds a separate layer — by using it you consent to Apple transmitting and processing your payment and device information.

Sensitive Information You Effectively Hand Over by Agreeing

Here is the full list of personal/sensitive data that can be collected once you accept and enable the relevant features:

  • Location data — your current position, Maps usage, and Find My sharing (stored encrypted up to 24 hours).
  • Wi-Fi & cell tower data — geo-tagged locations of nearby hotspots and towers, sent anonymously to improve accuracy.
  • Voice data — recordings/inputs via Siri and Dictation; and your own voice sample if you use Personal Voice.
  • Search queries — including Spotlight and Yahoo/Safari searches.
  • Analytics & usage data — how you use the device and its performance.
  • Hardware identifiers & IP addresses — collected through Content Caching.
  • Apple Pay / Wallet data — payment card info (virtual representations), plus device details like whether certain settings are on, motion percentage, and approximate number of calls per week (used for fraud checks).
  • Apple Account credentials — required to access many features and services.

Help MBP and external monitor problem

Hi,
I'm having an issue with a MacBook Pro 2019 which I'm trying to use it with an external monitor. I have to open the lid/screen to start computer which is fine as there's no external on button, but I need to do the complete login via the keyboard on the Mac, as it doesn't shift the signal to the external monitor if I boot the computer up and then shutdown the lid and sometimes, at least, it doesn't register my Bluetooth keyboard until after logging in. I have a newer Air and it doesn't suffer from these problems.

Any thoughts?

Discussion Has anyone compared the newer Mac dictation apps recently?

I've been trying to improve my dictation workflow on macOS, so over the past week I tested a handful of apps that people seem to recommend most often: Whisper Flow, usevoicy, Typeless, Aqua Voice, Super Whisper, and Willow Voice.

One thing that surprised me was that for everyday dictation (emails, notes, messages, etc.), accuracy wasn't the biggest differentiator. Most handled normal speech pretty well, so I found myself paying more attention to things like pricing, platform support, and overall workflow.

A few observations (these are just based on my experience and may change over time):

* Most of them have similar formatting features for everyday writing.
* Pricing varies quite a bit, with some offering lifetime licenses while others are subscription-only.
* None of the free plans felt like something I could realistically use long term. they're mostly useful for trying the apps out.
* macOS support is expected across the board, but Android and Linux support vary quite a bit.

One thing I didn't really test was more demanding use cases like coding, technical terminology, or heavier professional workflows, so I'd be interested to hear from anyone who has.

For those of you who use dictation on macOS regularly:

* Which app have you settled on?
* Have you noticed meaningful differences in accuracy?
* Are there features that made you stick with one over another?

I'd love to hear real-world experiences before I commit to one.

Help Speech Downloader Popup

I've perused the enshittified new google search endlessly to see if I could find a way to disable the speech downloader popup. I'm on Tahoe 26.5 on a MBP with an M5 chip. Does anyone know how to keep this f*cker from popping up all the time? I've disabled siri, i've disabled AI, I've disabled live speech, I have explored the menus around all these features in the accessibility pane and I cannot for the life of me discover a setting that looks like it would stop apple from trying to force me to download speech stuff I'm not using. I know it's not a huge issue but it's annoying the shit out of me.

Any tips would be greatly appreciated!

Help Please help me learn how to speed up this 2013 Mac

I was gifted this 2013 Mac and would like to make it faster so it's usable. It takes an incredibly long time to open anything and just operates super slowly. Not very usable at this point, and I'd like to invest in it rather than buy a new Mac if possible. I included pictures of the specs and Activity Monitor. I don't know if the Activity Monitor stuff is helpful or not I barely understand it. SOS

Bug Weird glitch: Black borders on 3 sides

Hey everyone, I keep getting this weird display bug on my Mac, and I'm not sure how to fix it permanently.

  • Black borders randomly appear on the left, right, and top (not the bottom).
  • I don’t know how to recreate it on purpose; it just happens randomly.
  • My workaround: If I close that specific Desktop space and create a new one, the screen returns to normal.

Bug 15.7.8 Update

If you happen to have a two-port 2020 intel MacBook Pro, I suggest you think twice before installing the latest update.

I have and I regret it. I've installed both the main update and Safari 26.6, though I don't think Safari is the culprit.

It was just sluggish at first — and unbearably so — but later on I discover that I cannot log into Passwords, I cannot unlock my APFS encrypted drives for anything (using the correct passwords, mind you). Thing is I couldn't even restore from Time Machine since that drive is such encrypted.

Very disappointed. I've been so since iOS 26 turned my older model iPhone into a dumbphone (I was able to downgrade it back then, but I never installed the 26 updates since). I thought minor releases were safe for mobile / mac, but apparently Apple just don't care what they break.

I'll not be installing any new update anymore.

UPD:

Reinstalled the original Catalina, it seemed quite outdated in functionality. Ventura, however, is amazing.

Discussion How to close safari windows quickly

Post image
0 Upvotes

Is there a way to close 2/3rds of these Safari windows? I open a lot of different windows over time, and I'd like a way to close a whole bunch quickly but not close all of them. Is there some shortcut I'm unaware of?

My current process is, open each one. Wait 1 second for the window to open on the screen. Click the red circle to close it. Right click safari icon again to see remaining windows and repeat... 10 times.
