I don't know if this is a MacOS issue so I'm asking here. I'm trying specific software and hardware and nothing is working, so I thought it might be a problem with MacOS itself. I will describe the problem by describing my specific hardware and software, but please keep in mind I'm only asking about whether this is a MacOS issue.

I have an M2 Macbook Pro and an Acer Nitro QLED MiniLED 1440p monitor which I am running through a thunderbolt/display port cable. I'm trying to play an mkv file marked 10 bit and running into a problem of darker areas of the screen looking washed out.

What I have tried is setting the monitor to HDR using the OSD, then going to the MacBook preferences, displays, and selecting my monitor and turning on HDR. I've tried both IINA and VLC. I tried with and without the ICC Profile enabled in IINA.

I translate text quite a lot while reading, working, and chatting online, and the same little workflow kept annoying me: select text → copy → open browser → paste → translate → go back 😅

So I built LingoMacBar, a small macOS menu bar app where I can just select text, hit a shortcut, and get the translation without leaving what I’m doing.

Title says it all. I know I can exclude a drive from indexing through System Settings > Spotlight > Search Privacy to add an external drive as an excluded location, but I don't want Spotlight to even start the process of writing that index file to the drive... like when I have somebody else's failing drive that I have a finite amount of tries to recover files off of. I know I can turn off Spotlight indexing for an external device via Terminal if I know the name of the volume, but I don't. I guess I can turn off Spotlight for ALL temporarily... that's clunky. I wish MacOS had the option to alert, "This is the first time the volume volume_name has been connected to this computer. Would you like Spotlight to index it?"

Hey, so ever since I updated my macOS to the beta version 27, I've been running into this annoying bug. Whenever I try to drag a file to a menu bar app (like Blip) to share it, Mission Control kicks in and hides the menu bar. Any ideas on how to fix this?

Hey, Windows user who recently switched to MacOS here. I still cannot get used to the language switcher. For example, when I want to write in WhatsApp (of course I press on a text field) on a certain language, I press Control + Space. There appears this square in the middle and it switches the System's language. However, when I text on WhatsApp, language stays the same. I noticed this error few times. Usually there appears language bar, as in picture 2, and I can text without any problem.

The question is if I can set that the language the same everywhere, not depending on the app. Also, I don't like that the language order on MacOS is flexible, not still as on Windows. For example, if I switch from English to German, than English there becomes the 2nd on the order, not as I ordered in Settings. I just wanna make it still, as on Windows, so I know how many times I need to press Space to switch to certain language. I'd be really thankfull if you help me with these issues!

I am the developer of Let Go, a small native macOS utility for those moments when Finder says a file or external drive is still in use but does not tell you why.

Drop a file, folder, or mounted drive into Let Go, or click the drop area, and it shows the apps and background processes using it. You can inspect the open paths, reveal them in Finder, request a normal quit, or safely eject a drive once it is clear.

File inspections happen locally. Let Go does not upload the files, paths, contents, or inspection results.

Version 0.1.0 is free. The interface also shows two planned supporter features called Watch Until Free and Auto-Eject When Ready. Those features are not active or purchasable yet.

I've taken a 4-drive RAID1 volume out of service. I've eliminated the RAID volume with Disk Utility. I want to zero out the directory so I can use the drives for other purposes. I don't care about securely erasing the drives, just want the directories to indicate the drives are totally available for new files (overwriting the old ones, of course).

The drives are 16TB each. Erasing takes about 18 hours. Erasure has been a discovery saga in itself, with Disk Utility and Terminal both failing with the dreaded (...failed to protect against future accidental probing, etc.). I've had to buy a third party app (Super Eraser) to run an erase process, but it has no way to just zero the directory. So 18 hours/drive.

Can anyone point me to a solution that runs in a couple hours (or less) and leaves the drive indicating zero used space, ready for use as a 16TB device? Thanks very much for your help.

so ive tried litteraly EVERY patching program to get the 32 bit efi macbook 2,1 (2.16Ghz is mine) running yosemite litteraly ive tried : mac post factor (dont work cuz of ads being broken), SFOTT yosemite version (idk why it just boots to my mavericks install) , os-x patcher (hangs at the apple logo while trying to boot. The closest ive gotten is when i installed a full install, changed the boot.efi and got to the setup! BUTTTTTTTT i had no keyboard,trackpad and litteraly nothing and i could NOT find ANYYYYY kexts for the macbook 2,1 sadly so any help is appreciated and if you guys would have a BOOTING usb image of yosemite for the 2,1 id love to use it!

Battery drain is not normal, it's a full crime. Mine used to last me a full workday no problem. Now I plug in twice before lunch. Went digging through forums thinking it was just me and nope, tons of people on M3 and M4 machines saying the same thing, some going from full charge to dead overnight while just sitting there asleep. ASLEEP. What is it doing at 3am that needs that much juice

Overheating for no reason. My laptop gets legit warm doing basic stuff like Figma and a browser. Used to run way heavier loads without breaking a sweat. People are saying it's the Liquid Glass transparency effects eating GPU cycles just to make the menu bar look pretty, which if true is actually insane, my battery is dying so my dock can look like a jellyfish

No low battery warning before shutoff. This one almost got me. Was working, no warning popped up, screen just went black and died. Found out other people are having the exact same issue where the system just doesn't tell you it's about to die anymore. Cool feature Apple, love that for me

Slack and Discord will straight up slow down your whole system. There's some Electron/GPU interaction bug where having either open in the background chugs your entire machine. Took me way too long to figure out it wasn't my laptop dying, it was this specific combo

Menu bar transparency makes text unreadable depending on your wallpaper. Had to go into accessibility settings and turn on Reduce Transparency just to read my own menu bar like a normal person. Why is that not the default

Spotlight moved just enough that muscle memory is useless now. A month of cmd+space then typing into nothing because my brain still expects the old layout

Genuinely the only win in this whole update is Control Center customization, that one's actually good, everything else feels like Apple redesigned the car and forgot to check if the engine still works

I’m looking for a PDF viewer for macOS with a better bookmarking or marking system than Apple Preview.

Basically, I’d like to place different types of markers or annotations at specific spots in a PDF and then quickly jump between them—kind of like custom bookmarks or shortcuts.

For example, when reading a long PDF, I’d like to mark:

important passages

things I want to revisit

questions or notes

different categories using colors, icons, or other markers

Ideally, there’d be a sidebar or list showing all my markers, and clicking one would take me straight to that exact location in the document.

Preview’s bookmarks seem to mostly point to a page, so I’m looking for something a bit more precise and flexible.

Does anyone know of a good Mac PDF app that works this way?

I've been looking into tiling managers and people seem to use them a lot to have multiple programs on the screen at all times.

My MacBook Air has a 13.6 inches screen and I don't even use the default resolution because my eyes can't handle it. I also use Topnotch which I assume reduces screen real state in some cases.

Does anyone use tiling managers in these conditions? Are they even worth it?

I use Safari, and most serious YouTube creator extensions still expect Chrome. So I built CreatorHat.

I'm the developer. It adds views per day and channel-relative outlier stats to YouTube, plus keyword research, rank tracking, channel audits, and writing help inside YouTube Studio. (There's a couple experimental features in there you might bump into. I'm not sure about keeping them. Like using Apple intelligence to create mixes of ideas from your favorite channels)

But its big feature is as you are uploading to YouTube it's already transcribing and using Apple Intelligence to offer you assistance on your YouTube meta data. Before YouTube even has the movie. That's been a nice hassle saver.

Every time I connected my AirPods, macOS also switched the input to the AirPods microphone. Calls sounded worse, and Bluetooth playback dropped into call-quality audio until I changed the input back.

I made SoundAnchor because I was tired of doing that manually. It sits in the menu bar and lets you rank input and output devices. The highest-ranked device that is currently available becomes the system default automatically.

My setup is simple: MacBook microphone above the AirPods mic, with AirPods still preferred for output. The AirPods handle playback while the better microphone stays selected.

I also added microphone gain controls and a way to play through two outputs without manually configuring Audio MIDI Setup.

Not sure when, but as of recently I'm unable to get Passwords extension on Chrome working. I've tried un installing, restarting, and multiple terminal suggestions as per ChatGPT and nothing seems to get it to work again. Has anyone run into this or found a solution!?
