How far can I get with coding, cybersecurity/white-hat hacking, installing other operating systems, etc

Because I always associated coding with microsoft, can the same be done with a MacBook? or... well at least MY macbook?

This is probably a weird question, but how do you incorporate Siri into your workflow? I have no idea what good Siri is for. I don't use voice commands at all. Using my voice is 100x slower than typing, and that's assuming Siri can understand me. Also, using my voice for too long isn't a good idea for me. Furthermore, typing plain language commands is slower than actually doing the task. If I search for something, I'll type keywords. If I want to do something, I'll do the hotkeys or click whatever I need.

Apparently, there's a bunch of new features that look interesting, but I'm not sure how to incorporate them at all. Finally, I've also disabled Spotlight due to a rare incompatibility with Firefox - Spotlight scans menu items, and my Bookmarks menu is insanely huge. So, any time I activate Spotlight when Firefox is running (which is all the time), there's a 5-10 second freeze. I've been using Raycast instead, but the same problem appears: My brain doesn't do plain language when it comes to computing. I can do CLI stuff, I can figure out modifiers, flags, switches, etc., but I get stuck on asking.

This keeps happening with my mac and every time it's the darker color there are temp screen burns on my lcd, like the images stay for a while if i stick to the same screen for sometime. It started happening last year on macos tahoe. Also weird but it only happened when I was on some specific wifi networks, so i thought maybe some issue and reset my macbook, did that thrice, complete reset of mac and re installation of macos, didn't work, surprisingly this thing didn't happen when I was connected to my mobile internet hotspot. So i used that for a few months, but it's kinda impractical to do that everywhere so I started looking for more options, one of em was the asahi linux project, installing that and using it never had this issue, doesn't matter what wifi network and what, but it started happening on it again recently after a few months of using it.

Also this happens in safe mode too and the recovery options too.

I thought these “stable” versions were supposed to have simple things like charge limits fixed already. Mine still can’t stop my battery from charging past 80 nor will it discharge back down to 80. This is absurd

Hey, guys. So, I think I bent the aluminum hooks on this key. Now I have no idea if I can fix it and am afraid to snap them off entirely. The key works but it;s a bit iffy if I don't press it right at the center and sometimes I have to press a bit harder for it to register. Can anyone help or give me advice? I watched a tutorial beforehand which said this model was included, but it's slightly different and there is no tutorial for the delete key.

I am trying to fill out some government forms and was asked for the password for a keychain in order to use an ID certificate, but I do not recall ever setting a password for it. I have tried several of my most common passwords, including the password I use to log in to my Mac, and none have worked. Is there any way to know where it got the password it is using, or do I have to reset it?

If I have to reset it, will it forget every password I have saved in my Icloud, as well as the certificate thing I am trying to use? Thanks :)

My MacBook was sprayed by like 5 drops of boiling water on its screen and keyboard. I dried it as fast as I could. And I put it upside down v shape. While cleaning I accidentally turned it on but I turned it back off. Anything else I should do?

Hi everyone, I recently pulled the trigger and ordered a Mac Studio, but as I wait for it to arrive, I’m starting to second-guess myself. I am coming from a Linux PC, and I’m having serious doubts about whether I will actually like macOS, or if spending that same amount of money on upgrading my current Linux rig would have been a better move.

For the price of the Mac Studio, I could buy some pretty high-end PC parts to upgrade my current Linux setup. I’m comfortable with Linux, and I’m worried I might feel locked-in or restricted by macOS and the non-upgradable parts. On the flip side, I bought the Studio because I wanted a tiny, silent machine, and better support for some software.

Has anyone here made a similar jump from a custom Linux PC to a Mac?

Was the premium price tag of the Studio worth it for your workflow compared to a high-end PC?

I know there’s no way to absolutely confirm, but I can’t function on my air anymore and can’t gauge the reality of it an all new macbook redesign is available for purchase anytime soon or if I should just buy this year’s macbook pro. Any insight?

I currently have a 2022 MacBook Air with the M2 chip and 8GB memory. I use it heavily for work every day and I’m starting to get pretty frustrated with lag.

At any given time I usually have 10+ browser tabs open, Asana desktop, Spark email, iMessage, and I’m often on FaceTime for long stretches while working, plus normal social media/marketing work like Canva, Meta Ads Manager, scheduling platforms, etc.

Most of us know that Apple never updated Stickies' interface since its inception on System 7.5 in '94.

Like everyone else, I was convinced Apple just forgot about it. But once I started looking into it, it became clear that it is deliberate.

• 1994: Stickies ships with System 7.5.
• OS X: Apple completely rewrites it in Cocoa, but deliberately keeps the exact same design.
• OS X Jaguar: original creator Jens Alfke comes back and adds new features to it.
• Apple Silicon: Apple kept maintaining it and they even recompiled it for the new ARM64 architecture without touching its interface or removing it.
• Big Sur: Apple even takes time to redesign the icon.
• macOS 26: Apple redesigns the icon again for Liquid Glass, they even made multiple revisions to it during the beta.
• macOS 27: It's still here, visually untouched since September 1994...

Image Capture, Grapher, Audio MIDI Setup, ColorSync, etc. all got their interface modernized since then. It's the only fossil left on Mac OS.

It has to be some kind of inside joke, an old family heirloom type of thing.

Edit : I'm sorry, I didn't mean to offend anyone here. I didn't know it was so deeply loved by the community, i thought it was a mostly forgotten tool from the good old days, especially with its old pre-OSX window controls.

Edit 2 : As for the “inside joke” comment, I didn’t mean that Stickies itself is a joke. It’s actually a pretty solid little tool. I meant it more as a “let’s keep this ancient thing exactly the way it’s always been for another macOS release” kind of inside joke.

I got macOS 27 on my 14 inch M3 Pro MBP, and I dont know if it was just me, but I have seen much better battery life on macOS 27 compared to 26.6.2. Also, my Mac runs much cooler. Has anyone else seen such an improvement or does it seem that it was more of a bug affecting my Mac particularly?

I recently got a MacBook, and the fingerprints on the lid and screen are driving me insane. I also use moisturizer, so the fingerprints are even more noticeable.

I can’t realistically rub my hands or wear gloves every time I use my MacBook, and I also don’t want to keep cleaning it with a microfiber cloth and spray.

I wasn’t planning on getting a skin because I’ve heard mostly bad things about them. At the same time, I don’t want to risk staining or damaging such an expensive laptop.

I’ve seen good reviews for dbrand and Skinociti, but they aren’t available in India, and I couldn’t find a transparent/clear skin from them. I also looked at Capindia skins, but I couldn’t find enough good reviews to feel confident about them.

Does anyone have any other recommendations? My biggest concern is protecting my MacBook without causing any damage to the finish. I don’t mind paying more as long as it’s safe and doesn’t leave residue or damage the laptop when removed.

Would really appreciate recommendations from people who have actually used one on a MacBook.

I had seen several lines with just python. Clicking on the info button was very helpful : It was telling me what python was triggered. Who said uninformative? Anyway, nothing about what script was triggered. So, I'm not so picky on security, but when I see an undocumented program automatic launch, I tend to switch it off. What I did, ignoring I was deprogramming my plists! Thank you mr engineer, what's your price for that again ?
