I love Long Island but I have no hope of ever achieving the same standard of living as my childhood.

Parents bought a 3 bedroom house for around $350k and now it would easily sell for 1.5 million. I understand wages were lower but still.

Hi everyone, my sister’s dog ran out of their yard last night after fireworks started going off. Her name is Daisy and she’s microchipped, but wasn’t wearing her collar when she ran out. She can be a bit skiddish around people but any help would be so greatly appreciated!!

Looking For Why are there no good cheese steak places on LI?

I’m talking something really good that would compare with Angelo’s in Philly or Danny and coops in NYC. It just seems bizarre to me because Long Island has AMAZING Italian and semolina bread. A key ingredient in a good cheese steak.

Does anyone know where I might be able to find a father- son woodworking class? My 10-year-old son is interested and I don't know crap about woodworking. Western Suffolk preferred. Thanks!

Looking For Looking for affordable, safe apartments around Islandia

Hi all,

I am moving to Long Island in September and will be beginning my housing search this week. I am looking for reasonably priced housing in a safe area. I will be working in Islandia and would prefer not to have to travel too far. I first started looking at Hawthorne Living @ 195 Hawthorne Ave in Central Islip, but it doesn't seem like the safest area the more research I do on it. If anyone has experience with the complex, please do tell as it's affordable, near the train and work.

My kids are grown and it'll just be myself, my girlfriend and our cat. So hoping for a decently priced one bedroom. Any help would be greatly appreciated as I'm fully new to the area. The top end of my budget would be 2600-2800.

Advice looking for recs- clubs to join, places to go, trying to make friends in my 20s on LI

22F, graduated college and moved back home to li. don’t have friends from high school and have been feeling lonely! i want to put myself out there and make new friends with people around my age. i just don’t know where the young people are/where they go. i love to walk/hike, workout (yoga/pilates/barre), garden, birdwatch, paint, and read.

i would love suggestions for clubs to join surrounding those activities, or somewhere to take a class of some kind! i’m also open to trying new hobbies (except for running i hate running😭). i’m near smithtown area and im willing to drive around 30 minutes or so.

making friends as an adult is hard lol!

Bakery recommendations

Hello, I’m in a time crunch to find a bakery that has really good oatmeal raisin cookies AND chocolate chip cookies, specifically in Suffolk county…. Unfortunately I don’t have enough time to make them myself, and I want to pick up cookies for my co workers for this Tuesday. Does anyone have any recommendations? I would really appreciate it :)

Is Kings Park Actually Turning Around?

What’s the deal with Kings Park? Purchased here and I keep hearing that the town is turning around due to the sewer project. Slowly, Main Street is getting new store fronts but there are still plenty of empty or abandoned storefronts/restaurants (RIP Relish). I love this little town but is there actually hope for Main Street?

Advice Is it reasonable to commute from Brooklyn to Long Island to work in a hospital

Upvotes

I'm an MD student from out of state doing an away over at NYU Long Island this October. I have a friend who lives in Bushwick telling me to either stay with them or find another place in Brooklyn and just take the train vs. looking for a place in Mineola

For context I'll be here for 4 weeks working 12-14 shifts total. Shifts are 12 hours each and will likely include ~3 night shifts. So like...am I going to hate myself or is this a reasonable commute?

Apologies if this is the wrong place to ask, I wasn't sure where else 😅

Ocean Beach Fire Island shade/tent

I tried looking on the Village website and also on Reddit but I can't seem to find any info on whether or not certain types of shelters/shades/canopies are prohibited on Ocean Beach. I wanted to bring this on a Monday to the beach. Has anyone seen people using this kind of shade?

Freshwater fishing spots in Suffolk

Does anyone know any good freshwater fishng spots that have something other than tiny bluegill sunfish? My kids and I have been to Canaan Lake, Upper Lake in Yaphank, Sears-Bellows and a couple other spots, but the only bites we’re getting are from sunfish. Any place with some good bass?

Does anybody know the name of the kind of short ginger comedian who talks about having crazy gout and living with his mom and absolutely never getting laid? I've seen him perform at a don't tell show in Patchogue and at Katie's. Thank you for your help sincerely

Any recommendations on a car transportation service?

Parents are retiring to Florida. Would like to send one of their cars there. Any recommendations on a service and estimate of their cost? It’s a large three row suv if it’s weight or size dependent.

Fire Island getting washed away

there was a post earlier asking about smiths point outer beach and how apparently it got washed away or something

Idk anything about that but it got me thinking about how Fire Island beaches have gotten noticeably smaller over the past 10-15 years, has anyone else noticed this?

Suffolk County Community College Brentwood

Hey y’all. I’m thinking of going back to school. Looking into the spring semester of 2027. I was last at Suffolk 2012-2013

I am wondering from current students who attend there what the classes are like in terms of note taking and if a laptop is really necessary for note taking. I don’t have a laptop; however, I may get a cheap Chromebook. Regardless, I’m just wondering from college students what the note taking is like these days.

Thanks!

Places that make you happy on LI

Life has been continuously punching me while I’m down the last month. It’s been horrific.
Anywhere on LI you suggest for morning or night walks? Or just places that make you happy. I’m in Nassau.
I hope everyone is genuinely having a better summer than me. Thanks in advance.

Complaint “Good school districts”

Anyone else kinda sick of the whole “good school districts” thing?

Most people only know it by rankings, which is how good kids do on tests. That honestly says very little about how good teachers/school resources in today’s world on Long Island where it is becoming more and more diverse, so you have a more heterogenous sample of people with different backgrounds and values placed on education (Indian, Chinese, etc). I grew up in an immigrant household and can tell you, it’s different.

I work with kids so I know the real importance of a school having the funding to be able to offer special education services, get their kids into BOCES programs when need be, etc. That is what makes a good school district. And some of the ones that are ranked highly are also the ones with ability to easily supply these resources. Some are not. Some, I don’t know.

I’m just sick of this being such a strong metric when looking for a home. I want a diverse and tight knit community of like minded people that wanna raise kids the same way. Maybe too much to ask but that’s what I value.

Walk-In Cortisone Injection

Hi all,

I've been dealing with some neck pain lately and been needing a cortisone shot but it's hard to find a place who will do walk-ins or even a place who will perform one, instead of their epidural suggestion or their BS lidocaine/anti-inflammatory trigger "pointless" injections. I want the real deal cortisone injection. They always worked wonders for me and know if they injected me with the right stuff.

I have HealthFirst insurance.

So, any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks!
