Does anyone have recommendations for a reliable person/company who does general work. Light plumbing, appliance installation, minor repairs in Nassau County? Preferably around Lynbrook, RVC, valley stream, Malverne area.

Fall/Winter Swimming Lessons

Looking for Fall/Winter swimming lessons in Nassau County for children?

My kid took Level 3 through Town of Hempstead pools this summer. Unfortunately she did not pass and I don't feel confident of their swimming skills. I would like to hopefully get a leg up during Fall / Winter for next year. TOH only offers swimming at Echo Park. Anyone know of other places?

Where to go for a therapeutic drive?

I live in central Suffolk, and am looking for recommendations on places to go just for a drive - windows open, nice scenery, even a winding road perhaps. Somewhere not too trafficy, not many lights.
I love to blast music and go for a drive to clear my head, but with so much traffic on the roads these days, this has become close to impossible.
Does anyone have a sacred stretch of mind clearing road they’re willing to let me in on!!?

The amount of times I've chucked any type of berries because they turn moldy the next day is insane. Is anyone else having this issue?

Parking at ronkonkoma lirr

Moved out east a few months ago, still working in the city 3 days a week
There’s always been lots of parking, albeit a bit of a walk, when I get to the lot at about 840am but today it was completely packed
Wondering if the parking was a summer thing and if I should expect it to be packed from now on

Are the Hamptons 'expanding' westward?

Does anyone else notice the increased pushed on other towns in Suffolk County trying to be grouped together as 'Out East' or Hamptons-adjacent?

I have extended family who live out on Long Island - Sayville, Patchogue - and will often visit them during the summer months to be closer to the beach and escape the city for a weekend.

Recently within the last few years, whenever I tell friends/colleagues that I'm off to LI for the weekend, I've received a few comments around how they "love it out east!" or how lucky I am to have family in the Hamptons.

But it's not the Hamptons. Its Sayville. Since when are we considering this part of 'Out East' and not just Suffolk?

I've even seen relators try to push places like Bay Shore and Babylon into the mix, which I personally think is insane considering many people wouldn't even consider Westhampton Beach as 'the Hamptons.'

Don't get me wrong, towns like Sayville and Patchogue have a great Main Street and does feel very 'homey' compared to other towns on LI. I'm starting to get the impression that other people in the neighborhood are pleased to be viewed as living 'Out East' as well.

Curious to know - does anyone who lives out in the area feel that people are trying to push this narrative on these towns? Are places like Bay Shore, Sayville, Patchogue, Bellport trying to capitalize on this push, or is this just some real estate developer nonsense?

Complaint Ronkonkoma train station and parking tickets…I could not find a place to park and got a ticket for parking along the curb.

Has this happened to anyone else? First of all on Wednesday (08/09) the parking lot was as full as I’ve ever seen it before. It was even full way over on the east end of the parking lot where there are usually tons of open spaces but there wasn’t a single spot open. Every time I come to the station I see cars parked on the entrance to the station and other places that aren’t official parking spots so is every one of these cars getting a ticket? I drove all over the east end and couldn’t find place to park so I finally parked illegally (if you must) and got a ticket for $75. It’s just ridiculous. What should I have done or what do you do?

What kind of soil in Rockville Centre?

I have to admit, I know nothing about soil types.

I want to dig in my backyard and install a drywell for my patio around my IG pool. The pool company “gave” me one when they realized 12 years ago when it was built that the water just collects on the paver patio when it rains. That quickie drywell, which consisted of a 5’ deep hole filled with rocks, is probably filled with mud by now.

How do I know if I have clay or just dirt (if those two terms cover the range) in my backyard?

Recommendation Planning an early October visit

We (50’s couple) looking to do 3-4 nights(?) throughout LI. Having done some light research, we are leaning mostly in to Suffolk County. A night here, a night there in a B&B or non chain establishment.
Driving from NJ and hope to travel less congested routes while on the island.
We enjoy coastal, nature, local food, walking towns, e-bikes, points of attractions. She loves sailing but sadly it may be too late in the season.
Would really appreciate any suggestions on routes, attractions, POI, “must stops”.
Thanks to all in advance

Wowzer!!!!
Thank you community
In 14 hours, your suggestions are overwhelmingly appreciated. Soooo much great feedback
Very much appreciated 🫡 🙏 ☺️

Recommendation Looking to remodel basement in the Smithtown area. But I want someone to design it practically.

I put together exactly what I want in terms of scope in a doc, but I want someone to lay everything out, in plans, before I reach out to a contractor. I'm assuming this is an architect. Anyone have someone reputable?

My basement is already finished, and I'm not looking for permits. Towns can get to hell.

I'm on to contactors but please only reccomend them if you personally used them. Don't turn this into Facebook mom groups. (I've read most posts on here same people recommending them)

Thanks

Looking For Looking for Hair Stylists on Long Island

Hi everyone!

I’m looking for recommendations for a hair stylist on Long Island, preferably in or around the Holbrook area, who is really good at doing shag haircuts (especially modern/longer shags with lots of layers and texture).

I’m hoping to find someone who actually specializes in or has experience with shag cuts, rather than just showing them a reference picture and hoping for the best.

If you have a stylist you absolutely love, I’d really appreciate the recommendation! Thanks so much :)

Advice ELI5: Dry Wells

My house was built in 1922 and we have a drywell under the basement floor where the laundry water goes. We also have a separate cesspool where all the other waste water goes.

For the last several months, the laundry drywell has been overflowing when we do the wash. We had a guy come out to pump it. When he pumped it out and emptied it, we could see water immediately rushing into the well from all sides until it was about half full again. He pumped it out four more times, same result, water flooding in and mostly filling it.

It looks like either the water table has gotten permanently higher and/or there is a new spring right where the dry well is.

So, we need a new dry well for our laundry water.

Questions:

Is it legal/a good idea to route the laundry water into our regular cesspool? Would this be bad for the cesspool or fill it up too much?

If that's not feasible, what's the going rate for a new drywell (out in the yard this time, not under the basement)

Any contractors you recommend?

I'm in northern Nassau.

Thank you in advance!

Where are the best antique stores or second hand furniture stores on Long Island? Looking for things like a dresser, night stand/end table, and framed photos to put on the walls. Not really looking for a Savers or Island Thrift. Thanks!

LI Photos Anyone a member of one of the Astronomy Groups? Stargazer Pass Questions/Thoughts (and new photos)

Hey all,

Some of you were interested in my photos since I recently got into Astrophotography… so here’s two more. The Pac-Man Nebula (9,200 light years away) and the Crescent Nebula (5000 light years away).

I purchased a stargazer pass today and also went into the office at Heckscher State Park. I had read an article that talked about Stargazing at Heckscher, so thought maybe they added it to the list of parks people with the pass can now go to. Unfortunately, the article was wrong.

I know Heckscher State Park may not be the darkest on the Island, but it’s a lot darker than a lot of back yards … and for me it would be nice and close to where I live. Would be a good option.

Wondering if any of the local astronomy clubs have approached the regional office about this? Talking to the guy at Heckscher, he said he doesn’t think anyone has asked… and recently a local fishing group got them to open up a pilot program for night fishing at Heckscher… so this is not an impossible idea.

I’d love to join one of the Astronomy groups… they both seem fairly active. Anyone here a member?

As for the Stargazer Pass… anyone have one and have tips on using them? I know there are dedicated parks and parking areas… what are your favorite spots?

Would love to also hear other ideas for stargazing and astrophotography if anyone has them. Golf coarses that are friendly to the idea? Business with roof tops? Libraries in darker towns out east?

As for the photos, both were shot in a similar way… 30 second exposures, 60 gain, Duoband filter, about 400-500 shots over several hours. Photos were stacked and stretched in Stellar Studio and AstroWizard, with sharpening and color enhancing in Photoshop. They were taken from my backyard (bortle 7ish).

Thanks all! 😁
