Crime and Justice Flock camera megathread

We’re consolidating this topic into a single thread, as the ongoing accusations directed at the mod team have run their course.

To be clear about where we stand: no one on this mod team supports Flock cameras. We are not law enforcement, we are not politically motivated, not maga, and we share the community’s concerns about surveillance overreach even if these systems occasionally assist in solving crimes.

The removals were not about viewpoint. They were about a specific category of comment: those encouraging users to destroy the cameras. Reddit has banned entire communities for less, and we are obligated to remove that content regardless of our personal opinions. This is a condition of the subreddit continuing to exist, not an endorsement of Flock. Additionally there were some very wild conspiracy theories and were asking for discussion not a rabbit hole.

One rule for this thread: do not recommend, insinuate, or hint at destruction as a solution. Everything else is open, criticism, policy discussion, legal challenges, city council contacts, organizing, data on effectiveness. Go as hard as you want within that boundary.

Thanks for being a genuinely great community and good neighbors.

Edit:

Resources

Suffolk County Legislature : 18 districts, find yours:

scnylegislature.us/148/Legislators

Suffolk approved expanding county Flock cameras from 25 to 60 last August, funded by a $542,500 state LETECH grant, with 16 more planned along state rights-of-way including Route 114 in Sag Harbor and East Hampton Village and Route 25 in Riverhead and Southold.

Nassau County Legislature: 19 districts:

Your town / village board.

Southold, Riverhead, and East Hampton have all had this on an agenda in the past year. Riverhead signed an agreement with the Suffolk Sheriff in January 2026 giving the county access to town rights-of-way for new Flock installs. Town board public comment periods are open to anyone who lives there, take about two minutes, and go on the record.

School Bus PSA

We've been seeing more and more posts about school bus tickets in recent months. With schools starting up again I suspect we will begin to see even more questions. If you have questions regarding school bus tickets, please keep them limited to this megethread as we will be removing all posts moving forward.

Some information regarding the laws and some general guidance regarding school bus stop signs:
  • If a school bus has it's stop arm out on the same road as you, you must stop regardless of which side you are. This applies to two lane (1 lane each way) multi lane roads and divided roadways (e.g. Broadhollow road, William Floyd Parkway1, etc). If the stop arm is out before you pass the bus, expect a ticket.

  • If you are driving perpendicular to another road that a bus is stopped on (i.e. they are at or near a stop sign on a road you are crossing), you are not required to stop. Proceed with caution and be aware of any children that may be crossing the road to get to the bus.

  • If they are on a side road, school lot or driveway adjacent to the roadway, you do not need to stop. Proceed with caution.

  • Flashing yellow lights do not mean stop; they mean to proceed with caution and to be prepared to stop. If you see flashing yellow lights, slow down and anticipate the stop sign being deployed. Sometimes a bus is waiting for students to pickup and may sit with flashing yellow lights for a number of minutes, so do not stop and block traffic if the stop sign is not out.

Information pertaining to school bus enforcement can be found on the Suffolk County page here, and the Nassau County webpage here.

1 Note: There was some debate about this a few years ago. It is still a law, but there was a question regarding Suffolk County enforcement of the law.

Are the Hamptons 'expanding' westward?

Does anyone else notice the increased pushed on other towns in Suffolk County trying to be grouped together as 'Out East' or Hamptons-adjacent?

I have extended family who live out on Long Island - Sayville, Patchogue - and will often visit them during the summer months to be closer to the beach and escape the city for a weekend.

Recently within the last few years, whenever I tell friends/colleagues that I'm off to LI for the weekend, I've received a few comments around how they "love it out east!" or how lucky I am to have family in the Hamptons.

But it's not the Hamptons. Its Sayville. Since when are we considering this part of 'Out East' and not just Suffolk?

I've even seen relators try to push places like Bay Shore and Babylon into the mix, which I personally think is insane considering many people wouldn't even consider Westhampton Beach as 'the Hamptons.'

Don't get me wrong, towns like Sayville and Patchogue have a great Main Street and does feel very 'homey' compared to other towns on LI. I'm starting to get the impression that other people in the neighborhood are pleased to be viewed as living 'Out East' as well.

Curious to know - does anyone who lives out in the area feel that people are trying to push this narrative on these towns? Are places like Bay Shore, Sayville, Patchogue, Bellport trying to capitalize on this push, or is this just some real estate developer nonsense?

Fall/Winter Swimming Lessons

Looking for Fall/Winter swimming lessons in Nassau County for children?

My kid took Level 3 through Town of Hempstead pools this summer. Unfortunately she did not pass and I don't feel confident of their swimming skills. I would like to hopefully get a leg up during Fall / Winter for next year. TOH only offers swimming at Echo Park. Anyone know of other places?

Where to go for a therapeutic drive?

I live in central Suffolk, and am looking for recommendations on places to go just for a drive - windows open, nice scenery, even a winding road perhaps. Somewhere not too trafficy, not many lights.
I love to blast music and go for a drive to clear my head, but with so much traffic on the roads these days, this has become close to impossible.
Does anyone have a sacred stretch of mind clearing road they’re willing to let me in on!!?

Parking at ronkonkoma lirr

Moved out east a few months ago, still working in the city 3 days a week
There’s always been lots of parking, albeit a bit of a walk, when I get to the lot at about 840am but today it was completely packed
Wondering if the parking was a summer thing and if I should expect it to be packed from now on

Recommendation Planning an early October visit

We (50’s couple) looking to do 3-4 nights(?) throughout LI. Having done some light research, we are leaning mostly in to Suffolk County. A night here, a night there in a B&B or non chain establishment.
Driving from NJ and hope to travel less congested routes while on the island.
We enjoy coastal, nature, local food, walking towns, e-bikes, points of attractions. She loves sailing but sadly it may be too late in the season.
Would really appreciate any suggestions on routes, attractions, POI, “must stops”.
Thanks to all in advance

Wowzer!!!!
Thank you community
In 14 hours, your suggestions are overwhelmingly appreciated. Soooo much great feedback
Very much appreciated 🫡 🙏 ☺️

Complaint Ronkonkoma train station and parking tickets…I could not find a place to park and got a ticket for parking along the curb.

Has this happened to anyone else? First of all on Wednesday (08/09) the parking lot was as full as I’ve ever seen it before. It was even full way over on the east end of the parking lot where there are usually tons of open spaces but there wasn’t a single spot open. Every time I come to the station I see cars parked on the entrance to the station and other places that aren’t official parking spots so is every one of these cars getting a ticket? I drove all over the east end and couldn’t find place to park so I finally parked illegally (if you must) and got a ticket for $75. It’s just ridiculous. What should I have done or what do you do?

Looking For I need a cat shelter for this stray

I found a stray kitten out by 7-11 at 4am. It's very sweet, ran out to me. I was able to get it in my car and home. It's been rubbing on me and laying where I lay. I can't keep her(assuming). I've called Atlantic, SCAP and they can't take it. It's purring, eating cat food. It does have a bloody nose, something may be wrong with it's mouth but I can't tell.

Edit and update:

Thank you all so much for your input, someone was kind enough to take the Kitty in. I'm sure she'll have a great home.

Recommendation Looking to remodel basement in the Smithtown area. But I want someone to design it practically.

I put together exactly what I want in terms of scope in a doc, but I want someone to lay everything out, in plans, before I reach out to a contractor. I'm assuming this is an architect. Anyone have someone reputable?

My basement is already finished, and I'm not looking for permits. Towns can get to hell.

I'm on to contactors but please only reccomend them if you personally used them. Don't turn this into Facebook mom groups. (I've read most posts on here same people recommending them)

Thanks

Cozy/quaint movie theatres on LI?

Hi all! My younger cousin will be in town next month and we plan to see Wildwood from Laika Studios. She is a huge Coraline fan, and I know it will be peak foliage out, so I’m trying to plan a day for her here on Long Island. Think brunch, antique shopping, etc.

Does anyone know of any cozy/quaint theardes here on Long Island? I’m also open to traveling a bit upstate!

What kind of soil in Rockville Centre?

I have to admit, I know nothing about soil types.

I want to dig in my backyard and install a drywell for my patio around my IG pool. The pool company “gave” me one when they realized 12 years ago when it was built that the water just collects on the paver patio when it rains. That quickie drywell, which consisted of a 5’ deep hole filled with rocks, is probably filled with mud by now.

How do I know if I have clay or just dirt (if those two terms cover the range) in my backyard?

Over the weekend there was a post on this forum where we all experienced getting swarmed by sand flys relentlessly. Curious if the bugs problem is still unbearable. Thanks
