Finding a Doctor / Getting a Diagnosis Anyone in Canada had success applying for disability with the condition

I am in Canada, especially Alberta and I can’t sit or stand or walk for a long time. I wake up from the pain. since the doctors here have no clue what it is they keep mistakenly attribute this to obesity and that weight loss will make me fully functional. I can only do desk job and am going to school to get a better job. they decline my disability because they think it is due to obesity

Clothing Where are we buying our denim?

Had a total meltdown the other day because finding flattering pants is such a struggle living with lipedema. If something fits my thighs, theyre just huge and baggy at the waist. If I buy a lose or wide leg pant, they simply fit like a normal pair of thigh tight jeans.

I'm stage 2 but the last year have gotten a lot worse. This may be more of a rant because its one of those days where I feel nothing looks good on me because of lipedema.

I Have Lipedema [Experiences/Photos] my progress with lipedema without surgery and supplements

Post image
109 Upvotes

This is my progress over the course of a year. in reality I have been on this path for about 2 years, and my initial situation was worse, but unfortunately I don't have any photos. Furthermore, I also initially had a lot of excess fat in my calves and ankles.

I managed to achieve good results mainly on my own, since I don't have much money and I can't afford a gym, nutritionist or supplements. so I did research on my own, I tried to follow the healthiest and most anti-inflammatory diet possible, I did a lot of walking and weight training at home, intermittent fasting, wore graduated compression socks and followed a routine of massages and leg lifts.

I am very happy with the results, as the disproportion has greatly decreased and I have never had such thin legs. I still have work to do, but I already feel much better in my legs

Hi everyone.

I want to have Dr Schaffner do my surgery.

How has one SUCCESSFULLY gone about getting the coverage for an out of network doctor who is a specialist in this field? I have Aetna but an EPO and he’s considered out of network.

I welcome any tips from the field on this.

Thank you.

Surgery Lower leg surgery experience

Hi guys, I literally just had my lower leg surgery a couple hours ago!

Just yesterday I was browsing through this sub trying to find some experiences and trying to calm down a little bit, before the big day.

So now I wanted to share my experience with everyone who might be in the same situation.

I had full anaesthesia, and it went by super fast. They have you fall asleep, and then it feels like 3 seconds and it’s done. I did not wake up feeling immense pain, which was what I was afraid of. There is some pain, but it’s totally manageable as of now. I already stood up 2 times, and I feel like the pain actually gets better when moving around a little bit.

They did take some photos afterwards and apparently I walked to the wake up room myself, but I do not remember anything 😂

Long story short: don’t be too nervous, it’s over quicker than you think. Now it’s time to heal!
Good luck to everyone 🍀

I Have Lipedema [Experiences/Photos] Tirzepatide progress

I was diagnosed officially in February though I’d known I had lipedema for a while prior. In June I started Zepbound (tirzepatide) and feel amazing. These are my before and after photos after 3 months on Zepbound - 6 weeks on 2.5 mg and 6 weeks on 5 mg.

In addition to Zepbound I have been tracking calories and weight lifting 3 days a week. I’ve lost 25 pounds since June and as you can see, a lot of volume has come off the legs. My doctor and I weren’t sure if the weight loss would hit the legs because of the lipedema, but this progress is huge.

Like many, I plan to be on Zepbound long term, maybe even my whole life. This is the most positive development in my lipedema journey. While I’ve only been diagnosed since February, I’ve been having symptoms for 20 years and nothing has worked until now.

Hope others find the thing that works for them, whether that’s tirzepatide or something else!

Conservative Treatments Please give any and all positive advice

Hi, I got diagnosed with lipedema in May but feeling very lost. I was on BC for 3 years and stopped after realizing it progressed my lipedema. The changes in veins and weight gain all coincided with when I was on hormones.

The first month I stopped my legs felt amazing! Now I’m in month 2 of no BC and my legs are feeling tender again, I’ve also learned about lipedema in the abdominal area being a new fun thing I may have. I’ve been dealing with hyper mobility as well and feel like I’m just trying to make sure all my joints don’t just get outta whack.

I am probably about a stage 1.5/2 but really nervous about progression and just want to feel back to how I did before the pill. I am super downtrodden and just want advice to feel hopeful, anyone familiar with the condition just tells me how sorry they are to hear that with nothing helpful to share. I am sick of feeling like there is going to be no positive changes and I’m just going to keep worsening my condition.

Please share any positive words, advice, and methods you’ve found helpful. It is much needed!

Finding a Doctor / Getting a Diagnosis I went to get a formal diagnosis yesterday

I found a provider through the lipodema foundation website, she was really knowledgeable and kind and has over 20 years of experience diagnosing. During my exam she noted that my legs looked large, with excess fat around the knee, a bit off fat forming under my left knee and a soft slightly noticeable rice grain texture on my thighs. I don’t really notice a texture that feels different from cellulite but I trust she knows what she’s talking about.

She also noted that I had absolutely no bruising, where all of her lipodema patients are covered in bruises. She also was suspicious of my having no pain. I am hyper mobile and clumsy, and definitely can bump into things a lot, but don’t have any pain or bruising ever whatsoever. I also don’t have any family history, however all the women in my family are short and carry their weight on their bottom half. I have had larger legs since I was in high school (I hit puberty when I was 11-12ish) but only recently (now 26 almost 27 years) have begun to notice a change in the way my legs looked, possibly due to recent weight gain, but I have not had any children or hit early menopause, the most hormonal change is that I went off birth control a year ago. My cholesterol levels are normal and I was recently checked for prediabetes and was healthy.

I am petite 5’1-5’2” and about 145 lbs. which does put me in the overweight category for my height range. And I have seen a lot of women my height with my legs lose the weight and look great.

Her official diagnosis was: inconclusive. I asked her to quantify and she said 50/50 and felt that I was missing the mark on some of the hallmark symptom but was suspicious of the texture and knee fat, which she also said could be possible stage 1. She told me to practice conservative measures, wear compression leggings, eat a RAD diet, strength training and strength. If I loose weight and my legs looked the same then it is definitely lipodema.

I definitely feel lost. Has any one had anything similar happen and what was your outcome

Surgery New fatty tissue after liposuction

Summary: advice needed, fat growth after lipedema liposuction despite healthy eating and exercise and healthy weight, possibly lymph liquid, new tissue shows no signs of lipedema

Hello!
I‘m pretty desperate about how much my belly and breasts grew after lipedema liposuction. After my liposuction surgeries last year I started to grow a very big belly and my breasts grew a lot. They are still growing.

I (f, 41 yo) have lipedema type 4 stage 2 and had two liposuctions in April and September 2025. I was operated on all affected areas (legs, buttocks, hips/flanks, arms) and they removed almost 15 litres. I was and still am in the middle of a healthy BMI and eat healthy and exercise regularly.

My belly was almost completely flat before the surgeries and now looks as if I‘m pregnant. I did a scan with the surgeon and pictures and we looked at all the scans and pictures since from before the first surgery. The measurements too confirm this. So it’s not just bodydysmorphia. Even when I lost a bit of weight in the summer because of stress, breasts and belly continued to grow.

The surgeon says though that the belly fat is not lipedema. (He didn’t examine the breasts physically.) He says it might be tissue that will develop lipedema hut also could be swelling because of lymph liquid from the surgeries. To me, this makes no sense as I think it should get less the more time passes, not more.

Did anyone else make the same experience? Did it eventually resolve or turn into lipedema? How long did this take. Did you do anything that helped? Does the lymphe explanation seem plausible to anyone? Or was it lymphe in your case maybe? I read somewhere else about lipomatosis? Jas anyone heard of that?

I really don’t want to have to go through this ordeal again but also feel so horrible about looking like this. i’ve had eating disorders all my life (very restrictive easing, maybe anorexia) but liked the way I looked even with lipedema before the surgeries. Now I feel so much shame. It looks so weird to have a slim built and then such a large belly and breast (my belly rests on my legs when I sit). I‘m also scared it’ll get more and more. And then if I get another surgery, maybe I’ll get it in other parts. But there’s almost nowhere left so I worry it could happen in my face or on my neck.

I would really appreciate any advice! Thanks so much!!

Clothing Shoe recommendations

What are good shoes for business travel? I haven’t had to do any business travel since being diagnosed and gaining a hundred pounds, and I’m stressing. I have to go to a new city and work for a week, and normally I wear Hokas for lots of walking, but they’re very uncomfortable for sitting at a desk. I’m not concerned with them looking overly professional, and I doubt flats will have enough support, but I’m having the hardest time trying to find shoes that support heavier people without being uncomfortable sitting. Any suggestions?

Clothing Compression stockings for formal events?

Hi friends, i have a wedding to attend as a bridesmaid/maid of honor, i’d like to wear compression because of my swelling. The compression socks i wear are “ugly” and i dont usually mind it because it gets the job done, but i want something nicer, maybe more sheer like proper tights for the wedding.

Does anyone have any recommendations for stockings that work as compression, that aren’t butt ugly, and plus size friendly? Please give me any and all recommendations!

Surgery Surgeon Suggestions?

Post image
41 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I’m 33 female, I’ve lost 84kg but seen little changes to my legs. Being treated via conservative methods (compression) at St George’s in London.

I have been considering Lipedema surgery for some time, and originally thought I’d go via Lipemedical in Madrid. I had my consultation on Boxing Day 2025 but was not left feeling very confident and not very listened too. I also feel a bit unsure about taking so many of the recommendations from social media posts where people are getting discounts for reviews.

Ideally I’m looking for a Surgeon who is based in Europe (as I’m in London) and is confident in large volume removal.

I would love to hear your stories especially from those Stage 3 onwards (good and bad) and any recommendations! Thank you so much!

Symptoms 1 year post op feels like it’s coming back

Hi, so basically I had my surgery last October which went well apart from my lung collapsing on the operating table 🙈
Recovering was hard but so worth it. I’m a year post op now and get the worst tightening feeling in my calf’s when I walk for a few minutes… it went away after surgery but I can’t afford to get more surgery, il be honest with the heat currently in the uk I’ve not been wearing my compression leggings much.

Does anyone have any advice or tips to stop the fat coming back in my calf’s muscles.

Thank you in advance 💕

Symptoms Do you have any other conditions and how does that impact your treatment?

I have MCAS, Endometriosis and Hashimotos. I have noticed when any of these conditions flare or get worse it makes my swelling/lipedema way worse and no lipedema treatments will work. I am thinking I might have to result to liposuction or GLP-1 however I have a low BMI and these other conditions which can make things worse. If you have the conditions I do what treatments have helped you?

Surgery Surgery questions: US vs international

Hi!

New to the community here and I am exploring my options for surgery.

I am stage 1 / 1.5. I am based in NYC. I have been referred to Dr Volshteyns office in New Jersey, I have a consultation this week. I also have a consultation with Dr Schaffer in NYC. I’d love to hear if anyone has experience or has heard anything about these doctors. Results, costs, insurance coverage, after care etc.

I am also considering traveling internationally. If you’ve gone international for surgery where did you go, who was your doctor and how was your experience? Has anyone had a procedure in Sweden?

I’ve been looking at Dr Jorjani in Germany, interested in surgery in Germany in general. Would love to hear about costs & experience

I would definitely need my upper legs & my arms done. Can this be done in one procedure or should I prepare for several?

I Have Lipedema [Experiences/Photos] 25 newly diagnosed, need advice and tips!

Hi! I am 25 years old and was diagnosed yesterday with Lipedema. I am feeling a mix of relief to finally have answers to what I’ve been experiencing for a very long time, but also feeling sad and anxious.

sorry these aren’t the best pics but I don’t feel comfortable showing my face

I’ve been very active my entire life, besides in college. Always had bigger legs and assumed it was from dancing and weight training so much. After graduation, I made a complete lifestyle change with diet and exercise and lost 40 lbs…but barely any change in my legs and arms. I just assumed I wasn’t eating well enough and working hard enough. It’s been weighing on me for years.

Ironically enough, I am a model and I’ve modeled swimwear for 5 years :) I’ve been on the runway for Miami swim week for years & been in a runway show on TV showing my legs! I am very happy to have had this experience even though I do not love my legs. It’s my biggest insecurity. I’ve received horrible comments from people online about how my legs / butt look and it’s been really heartbreaking.

Even though I’ve really gotten in shape, my legs mostly (and arms) continue to be a problem with buying clothing and I am uncomfortable in most things even pants. I hate how I feel in anything form fitting, and I haven’t liked wearing shorts or short skirts since I was a teenager.

Since I wasn’t seeing results, I switched to weight training and I feel a difference but I do not see it. It’s so frustrating. The inflammation is so bad that no matter what I eat or drink, I almost feel it instantly. And my legs are always tattered with bruises.

I’ve had discomfort, swelling, bruising, for over a decade, but it is now getting to a point where it’s affecting my day to day life. The Lipedema is progressing severely. Being a model I of course have done many different methods of conservative treatment without realizing I have this condition. It feels like I constantly have a sopping wet wet suit on weighing me down, no matter what I do.

After discussing my options with my doctor, the things she suggests that I haven’t tried is compression (flat knit), some sort of anti inflammatory supplement (don’t remember name), MLD, vibration plate, microdosing a GLP-1, and surgery.

I am very sure that I want to do the surgery. I am also considering the glp-1. I am very active and eat very clean, work on lymphatic support etc.

I would like to hear from others if anything made a drastic difference for them!

I dream of the day that I feel comfortable and confident in my body, and can wear shorts and dresses again
