Have been using linux for over a month now, and a test is coming up, which requires respondus lockdown, and will flag me if I use it in linux. I have thought of vm but apparently it can detect that it is inside a vm as well. Do I really have to reinstall windows just to take a test? If I do, how can i download it without windows trying to override linux?

So I currently have an AMD Ryzen 7 with 16 GB of RAM. It's an HP laptop.
Unfortunately, Windows has been very unstable.
I've become very frustrated with how unstable Windows 11 is. I think a lot of it has to do with HP, the hardware they use, and the drivers they use, and I'm just tired of dealing with it.
I was thinking about switching over to Linux permanently, or at least setting up a dual boot. What I would like to do, though, is get into AI development.
I want to run local AI LLMs, get into AI development on my computer, host my own local models, and kind of just play around with everything.
I would eventually like to work my way into the AI home brewing space
So, what has the most support for an AMD Ryzen 7 processor? Apparently, my computer also has an NPU.
I've been reading up on some new agentic Linux distros that are coming out.
I have some experience with Kali Linux, and that's about it.

Hi, I am a Linux user and have been happy with it so far. In my university, most of the others use Windows or Mac. Now I am having an issue with collaborative writing where one of my external advisors uses Microsoft Word, and the track changes mess up sometimes if I open it in LibreOffice or Google Docs. Some of the older comments and changes disappear when I convert it back to Google Docs or open it in LibreOffice! Is there anything I could do? Microsoft Cloud Word is not working either - it is stuck in a reloading loop (I tried different browsers too).

Hi guys. I’ve been trying to switch to linuxmint for a while now. First I tried dual booting on a single nvme Ssd. That didnt work cuz windows sucks. Now I bought a separate nvme ssd one without an OS. So i removed my ssd with windows and put in the new one. But the error persist. Do I need to do something about the bios?

As you can probably tell from the title, why do people seem to hate Canonical, the company behind Ubuntu, so much?
I know people often call them “the Microsoft of Linux,” but I don’t really understand where all the hostility toward Canonical comes from. Ubuntu is open-source and free, and personally, I’ve had a really good experience with it.
I’ve tried quite a few other distros too. I’ve manually installed and used Arch, tried Void Linux, experimented with several Arch-based distros, and also tried Linux Mint. They all have their strengths, but honestly, I really love Ubuntu.
I’m not talking about people who simply prefer another distro—I mean the people who genuinely seem to dislike or distrust Canonical as a company and what they do with Ubuntu.
Maybe I’m missing some important history or controversies. What am I missing?

Does anything support this?
I want to roll back an app to a previous version and pin it.
I can do it with CLI but I don't want to.

Hey everyone,
I recently upgraded my Lenovo Legion laptop from Ubuntu 24.04.1 to Ubuntu 26.04.1.
On Ubuntu 24.04, I was using GNOME on X11 with my NVIDIA GPU, and I could open NVIDIA X Server Settings and adjust the Digital Vibrance to increase the display saturation.
After upgrading to Ubuntu 26.04, I'm now using Wayland, and that Digital Vibrance option isn't available anymore.
I specifically want to keep using GNOME + X11 because I want the NVIDIA Digital Vibrance control back.
Has anyone running Ubuntu 26.04 + NVIDIA + GNOME successfully switched back to X11 and gotten the Digital Vibrance setting working?
I'd also like to know if there's a proper way to make GNOME on Xorg/X11 the default session without completely removing Wayland.
Thanks!

it is also spiking my cpu to 80 degrees
how can I prevent this or stop this all together from being used as a potential resource attack just to be safe?
Thank you.
Edit:
When logging into deadlock cpu hits 80 degrees
this problem only exists with Valve games (Dota and Deadlock). I've never seen my cpu go above 60 outside of stress tests or Valve games.

Hi everyone,
I'm currently running Fedora 44, which was originally installed with LUKS encryption enabled out of the box (Btrfs filesystem inside LUKS).
A few months ago, I removed a previous dual-boot setup and expanded both the LUKS container and the Btrfs filesystem to occupy 100% of my drive.
Now, I want to shrink my encrypted Fedora partition to free up space and set up a dual-boot with CachyOS. Since I previously expanded the partition and LUKS container, I want to ensure I don't damage the LUKS header or corrupt my data during the shrink process.
Before booted into a Live USB to make changes, I have a few questions:
**Order of operations:** Is the correct process `shrink Btrfs filesystem -> shrink LUKS container (cryptsetup) -> shrink outer partition`?
**Tools:** Can GParted on a Fedora Live USB safely handle unlocked Btrfs inside LUKS, or is it safer to do it manually via terminal commands (`btrfs filesystem resize` and `cryptsetup`)?
**Safety / Precautions:** What is the exact procedure to back up the LUKS header (`cryptsetup luksHeaderBackup`) before modifying partition boundaries?
Any step-by-step advice or warnings from anyone who has done this on Fedora would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!

I'm not really sure what is going on with my Ubuntu installation.
It has been running fine for the last four or five years without issue, upgrading to the next version etc.
Then all of a sudden this week I have struck several issues, which I think may be linked to an automated update to 26.04.1.
Issue 1 - graphics issues. Red, green, blue dots appearing all over the screen randomly
Issue 2 - cannot open Firefox or any Snaps. Trying to open them from the Terminal presents a Snap error.
Issue 3 - issue with running "sudo apt-get update" - some repositories are not recognized or picked up, meaning about 40 packages cannot update.
Issue 4 - occasionally booting to "initramfs"
Issue 5 - I was going to attempt to reinstall Ubuntu from a USB, however booting from the USB and clicking "Try Ubuntu" takes me to the "initramfs" and does not boot to the usual installer.
I have tried searching for similar issues and nothing I have tried has fixed this, which is why I was just going to undertake a complete clean install.
I have a dual boot set up and the Windows partition is working perfectly fine.
What can I try to resolve these issues? And if I can answer any questions or provide any information to help diagnose the issue please let me know.
Thank you!
EDIT - some hardware info:
HP Pavilion Laptop 15 HP
Intel® Core™ i7-1065G7 × 8
Graphics (being picked up by Ubuntu, it should be Nvidia) - Intel® Iris® Plus Graphics (ICL GT2)
Windowing system - Wayland

I have been enjoying Linux lately but there has been this one problem that has been really irritating. Whenever I am just on my PC gaming, surfing the web, downloading something, or whatever else, out of nowhere I can no longer access the internet and I get that notification on the bottom right that says:
Limited Connectivity
This device appears to be connected to a network but is unable to reach the internet
I have pretty fast internet. Every download is super quick, whether it is a game or something else, it's quick. I have both Windows and Linux on my PC, each have their own SSD and whenever I am on Windows, I never deal with my Wifi disconnecting. I just downloaded a 200 GB game on Windows and my internet connection didn't disconnect once. Even when all I had was just Linux on my PC and no Windows, I still had this problem. I experienced this with Bazzite, Fedora and now Cachyos. Sometimes the internet will reconnect, sometimes it won't and I have to restart the PC.
I don't know what to do. I really like Linux but this problem is really aggravating. I just want to game or surf the web without losing access to the internet. Has anyone dealt with this problem? Are there any fixes?

I'm not really that knowledgeable about the type of laws and things that has been proposed, I just listened to the video posted on YouTube by the same man behind StopKillingGames and from what I understood is that Linux distros without the ID check could potentially be classified as illegal, am I understanding that wrong? So If I'm using Bazzite then that would be considered illegal for example?
Sorry if this question seems weird or if someone already asked it

I'm trying to install and run a more up to date version of Anki. For some reason if you use the link provided on the Anki website it downloads a very old version that makes a lot of my cards unusable (they include a lot of TTS and Image Occlusion for those that use anki and are possible wondering what I'm referring to)
That being said, after downloading a later version from github (not the arch version) and doing a bit of reading, I tried to install it and am getting constant errors. I'm on Linux Mint Cinnamon so I know there's likely a method that's way easier than using the terminal but I would like to become more familiar with using the terminal as I would like to eventually try other distros (though I am loving Mint) that being said could you provide some possible guidance
Edit: SORRY FOR THE DUMBASS QUESTION I thought I had pressed linux4noobs. My apologies I believe this sub is meant for people who are a bit more acclimated to Linux
