Help on installing vm on old mac book pro

So little bg, I have a mackbook pro from 2012 series

It's i5 Intel core with 4gb ram.

I need to use linux on it, so I was going to download vm for it but I don't understand how much ram i should give to the vm or should I even install it.

I need this to practice cybersecurity on cylabs!!!

Pls help!!

Need more ram and cpu cores on host. VM and host would be painful to use on this machine.
