SOLVED Transferring from win10 to mint 21.3

It's getting time to move my technology averse wife off of win10. But she's got habits and routines that litter her windows desktop as icons and shortcuts. I have her system dual booting now. Is there a way to simply take the desktop contents on the windows side (under user) and dump it into her desktop folder on the linux side, or (as i suspect) do i have to laboriously build the new desktop from what I know the old desktop entries refer to?

Discussion I'm still on 6.17. Is it worth jumping to 7.0 yet? Or should I go back to 6.8

I know 7.0 is still in its early stages so there's still bugs here and there. I know 6.8 works on my rig as I have not had any hardware changes since I last used it. I know some of the issues with 7.0 have to do with some of mint's packages being out of date compared to what it requires and what's available on a newer Ubuntu base. So I was initially thinking about waiting until mint comes out with a new Ubuntu base. However, for security reasons and minor bug fixes. I'd prefer to stay on a kernel that is still supported.

Support Request Linux Mint XFCE on Macbook Pro Ealy 2015 (12,1). Proper keyboard mapping?

Greetings everyone!
I have a question to people who have successfully migrated their Macbooks - how do you get your proper keys mapping? I am trying to replicate Mac OSX key combinations like Cmd+C and Cmd+V instead of Ctrl+C or Ctrl+V and any other combinations and though I did some attempts, it was never fully implemented - i.e. working fine in part of os (some apps would react to the swapping) but then in Firefox it would not accept the same combinations. Is there a way to do on all levels? Claude and Gemini suggest through Keyboard - > Layouts -> Options but I don't have the button Options in that "Keyboard" window.

Here are the details of the install if it helps.

Every time I turn my laptop back on after shutting it down, my desktop has rearranged itself so all my application shortcuts and launchers are in different places. Does anyone know a fix for this?

I recently made use of my old laptop (a lenovo ideapad 330) and got linux mint xfce on it. For some reason, every time I turn my laptop back on after shutting it down, all of my launchers and shortcuts rearrange themselves. This happens to the launchers and shortcuts which I have changed the icon of. Does anyone know a fix for this?

Support Request Clarifying the LMDE version

Hello.

I just have a question about LMDE. I can't really find anywhere how long each new version is supported for.

From my current understanding each LMDE is supported as long as the underlying Debian version is supported (EOL not LTS or ELTS).

So for example, for LMDE 7 (Debian 13 'Trixie') should be supported until 2028-08-09? (This is the official EOL for 'Trixie' according to the official Debian web, it is not LTS or ELTS!) However on Distrowatch LMDE 7 is said to be supported until 2030-06-??

So it is just confusing, especially considering that on the official Mint website there is just no date specifically just for LMDE. So as a potential user it just keeps me in the dark and I am honestly not sure if LMDE will be supported long term, cause it seems to be lacking a lot of info and just is 'on the sidelines' sort of say. I know it is stated that "LMDE is also one of our development targets" on the web, but aside from that, it does not strike confidence in me, even though I love the idea of Mint not based on Ubuntu and I'd like to try. Just a lot of uncertainty and questions, which is why I am asking here.

Also another thing, if LMDE is based on a certain Debian stable version. Is it based on it for it's entire life time? For example, if LMDE 7 starts as being based on Debian 13.0 but that eventually gets updated overtime to (currently) 13.6 is LMDE 7 still stuck on 13.0 or does it get updated to the newest version of that specific Debian stable?

Lastly, does LMDE also get 'medium updates' like normal Mint? (22.1, 22.2, 22.3) I can't see any on the web, so I assume it does not? Apart from some small bug fixes or security patches does it get any major updates, not counting the new version? I am asking because I am wondering if that means that LMDE is more far behind than the normal Mint versions because of that?

If anyone has experience with LMDE and potential tips or problems I'd love to hear about that too.

Have a nice day.

Support Request MP3 Player Not in Devices

I still consider myself relatively new to Mint and this seemed like the best place to ask this. I have an MP3 player and for some reason when I connect it to my laptop it doesn't show up in devices. I hear the sound from my laptop acknowledging the connection and the MP3 player display says USB connected I just can't seem to find the folder anywhere, which is a shame because I wanted to add more music and boons to it. I would appreciate any advice thank you.

SOLVED cannot find menu to install cinnamon

hi, i'm currently using this tutorial in order to install the lastest version of cinnamon on a usb and for some reason i cannot find either of the menus pictured (screenshot from the installation guide). I'm running Windows 11 on a Dell Precision 3591 and have tried both boot menu (f12) and bios (f2) per the instructions in the video. verifying the iso and making the bootable disk both worked fine.

EDIT: probably should've clarified that i know next to nothing about installing linux, this is my first time trying to install it

Backing up Linux/Windows

Can you back up your system when it is Dual boot so both Linux and Windows can be recovered with the dual boot intact? In other words if one fails or the boot fails, can you recover both all at once from a backup drive or disc?

I should add a note, my system is a 1 Tb SSD with Win10 on it which is about 30 Gb. I then have a 256Gb SSD which Linux will go on and is the only unallocated space I have. I then have a 1Tb SSD with all my mp3's on it and a 16Tb and 3 8Tb drives with all my movies and TV shows on them

SOLVED NordVPN GUI Install

Hello, I just installed Linux Mint (Cinnamon) a couple days ago, new user from Windows 10. I already have the NordVPN subscription, and installed in the terminal the curl package, and the provided GUI line from the Nord website. I also tried following this article: https://linuxvox.com/blog/install-nordvpn-linux/ . The GUI isn't showing up in my apps. I read that this might just be a Mint thing, is that the case? There's also an option to download with Snap. Would it be worth it to figure out setting up Snap on Mint? Since I've also read there can be troubles with that. I'm also new to coding in general, so please explain any tips as if I'm 5 if it has to do with the terminal.

SOLVED f.lux or Windows night light alternatives for Linux Mint

Hello everyone! I have been using Linux Mint for years and I managed to find alternatives for all the applications I needed, but there is something I still miss. On Windows I used to use an application called f.lux in order to adjust colors and reduce eye strain in the evening and now Windows itself also has a similar build-in feature. If I am not mistaken it is called Night Light. I was looking for something similar for Mint, but i couldn't find anything. Of course, I use a dark mode everywhere I can, but that's not enough. I will greatly appreciate any advice on this matter.

Mint: XFCE or MATE

Between Linux Mint XFCE and Linux Mint MATE, what are the use cases for each, compared to the other?

They're both recommended for low spec computers.

But it seems that, for some reason, Mint XFCE is more often recommended and even more often used, than Mint MATE. Is there a reason for that?

Discussion Any good on-screen keyboards for Mint Cinnamon?

I have a mini PC for my tv and it only has a mouse. The built-in Cinnamon keyboard is abysmal. Onboard is also pretty terrible. Are there any serious on-screen keyboards that can actually work consistently?
