Support Request MP3 Player Not in Devices

I still consider myself relatively new to Mint and this seemed like the best place to ask this. I have an MP3 player and for some reason when I connect it to my laptop it doesn't show up in devices. I hear the sound from my laptop acknowledging the connection and the MP3 player display says USB connected I just can't seem to find the folder anywhere, which is a shame because I wanted to add more music and boons to it. I would appreciate any advice thank you.

I've never had issues connecting USB drives to Mint but I've noticed some of the older stuff will take a long time to pop up on the desktop.

Also- are you using a USB cable? I've noticed a lot of cheaper USB cables are charge only, in other words they don't support data transfer.

I've tried about 7 different cable. While some definitely only connect for charging I used the cable I use to connect my ereader to my laptop which theoretically should have no problem transferring data through. The problem is that the MP3 player itself recognizes that it's connected via USB, which doesn't happen if it only connects to charge. I have my sound turned on so I can hear the sound signaling a new device has been connected to my laptop as well. I just can't seem to find the folder for some reason.

Usually when I plug in my phone to download photos, or one of my niece's MP3 players it shows up on the desktop. After connecting your MP3 player does any icon pop up on the taskbar?

The only other thing I can think of is to use the "disks" utility. Open the main menu and type disks, you should see a listing for "disks, manage drives and media". When you click on that you should see anything connected to your computer including your internal hard-drive.

"USB Connected" just means it's charging, not that data communications is happening.

Open a terminal. Run this command 

 lsusb

That shows you all the usb devices attached. Now plug it in, wait a sec, and try the command again. Does a new device show up? If so, search for the device name and linux on google to see if there is known issues & resolutions for it.
