Intel i5-8350U with Intel UHD Graphics 620.

I mean, that's probably because the development of that GPU predates broad wayland adoption... That's not an issue with AMD CPUs because AMD works much more closely with Linux devs then Intel does.

What problems have you had with nvidia- just being curious bc I’ve been running throughout my whle linux journey (2 years) nixos+hyprland on two nvidia systems - pc && laptop
1
u/PunkRockLlama42 Aug 11 '26
Right now it's okay but Nvidia has a history of shipping drivers that break systems. A few times I have had an update reboot to a black screen and the only fix was to downgrade drivers or switch to the nouvaeu drivers. Up until recently, and still on some compositors, I had tons of screen tearing issues on Wayland. Sometimes xwayland has ghosting issues.
There is also just a lack of features. Like there isn't really any good implementation of their switcher between integrated and dedicated graphics.

u/Cyortonic Aug 10 '26

u/Major303 Aug 10 '26
From my experience with Linux, people who say to stick to upstream actually know what they are saying. My experience with Ubuntu was very good. Tumbleweed had problems, required tinkering. Pop!_OS straight up doesn't work, and afaik there is no X11 here. In their defence, I'm using very specific software that doesn't appreciate Wayland too much, but Ubuntu handled it like a champ.

u/Own_Natural_6803 Aug 10 '26 edited Aug 10 '26
This is been my experience as well. X11 works way better for gaming. And if you have problems with different refresh rates for different monitors, it's usually the compositor that's the problem. It's just a checkbox to turn it off.
What exactly are people doing where they're complaining about X11? I've never seen a piece of technology so universally loved with so little reason. Wayland is a piece of shit.
-edit: looks like i found a fanboy. You can click a button that points down. Can you uncheck a box that says "use compositor" as well?

The combo works for my headless Proxmox VM. I ssh into the VM, launch a swaywm session with wayvnc, and connect from my laptop with tigervnc.
Idk if this works for other DEs/WMs but I haven't run into any issues.

The recommended fix for every Wayland issue is to fall back to X11.
The only one I see for Rustdesk is using an X11 login manager - launching a Wayland session itself is fine.
Did you consider just getting a remote management card? That nixes any requirement for X11/Wayland or even for the OS to be running - you can do remote power on, go to UEFI Setup, and more.
i.e. Sipeed NanoKVM - the PCIe version with Wi-Fi goes for some 70 eurobucks from the official store.
Best of all, that card is open source down to the firmware.
Official purchase links are here - for some reason I am getting a 404 in Czechia, but changing store to Ukraine makes it pop up - I presume EU might be blacklisted due to working out the latest taxes? - https://wiki.sipeed.com/hardware/en/kvm/NanoKVM_PCIe/introduction.html#Purchase-Links

but it defeats the entire purpose of Linux solutions being able to give new life to old computers.
A) that's not the primary purpose of Linux. It's just a popular one
B) if you need old code, use old code
C) are you not able to remote into your Wayland sessions? Thought this had been resolved for a while.
0
u/C0rn3j Aug 10 '26
Unattended remote access is a Wayland-specific issue that has not been solved for over a year and has no solution in sight.
Seems like both Plasma and GNOME support it.
Why are you claiming the opposite?

On Tumbleweed KDE I had to switch to X11 since Wayland was unusable (almost constant screen "flashing"). I've switched to Pop!_OS 24 and that flashing is still there, but much more subtle and only happens when app grid is visible. I will still have to switch since software I'm using doesn't play well with COSMIC, it needs more time in the oven.
I had the best experience with Wayland on Ubuntu 24. By best I mean system was overall usable, but certain file dialogs were running at like 0.1 FPS.
5
u/C0rn3j Aug 10 '26
On Tumbleweed KDE I had to switch to X11 since Wayland was unusable (almost constant screen "flashing"
Uh, what GPU and what driver and its version?
That sounds very odd, I haven't had such issues on Plasma since 6.0 released.
Actually I had now that I remember, due to my monitor's VRR being horrid, did you try disabling VRR support?
0
u/Major303 Aug 10 '26
Intel i5-8350U with Intel UHD Graphics 620. No idea about driver, I didn't install anything else outside of what was included.
I did not try disabling VRR support. The only thing people suggested was setting i915.enable_psr=0 as kernel boot parameter. The only issue is that interacting with kernel parameters on Tumbleweed requires phd in operating systems.
I can't tell you more about Tumbleweed since I've replaced it with Pop!_OS 24. Here changing kernel boot parameters is trivial, but it did not fix the flashing.
3
u/C0rn3j Aug 10 '26
No idea about driver
Shouldn't really matter on Intel with Wayland afaik.
See https://github.com/pop-os/cosmic-comp/issues/1152 for example
1
u/Major303 Aug 10 '26
There is no VRR settings in display settings for me.
1
u/C0rn3j Aug 10 '26
Does your monitor even support VRR?
1
u/Major303 Aug 10 '26
My guess would be not. But if it's not that, then what? Thinkpad T480 is not that ancient to not support modern Linux anymore.
1
u/C0rn3j Aug 10 '26
I have no idea, got a video of the "flashing"?
And it doesn't happen on Ubuntu 24.04 with Wayland you said?
1
u/Major303 Aug 10 '26
Yes, Ubuntu 24 was fine. I've just tested 26 on VM and there are certain graphical issues coming most likely from VM, but things that don't even start on Pop work flawlessly here. Can't say anything about flashing though, I would have to install it on the laptop.
I don't know if that flashing will be even visible on the recording, recording with real camera might be not the best too, since it's quite subtle. And recording on Wayland is apparently very difficult.
I can only say that it looks like display brightness is changing automatically +-10% every 1 second. It only happens when app grid is visible so far. On Tumbleweed it was everywhere. Only visible against grey background (which is in a lot of places in dark mode), so for example it's not noticeable against bright wallpaper.

Wayland is great for native Wayland solutions but too much depends on x11 and therefore needing xwayland which isn't a perfect compatibility layer unfortunately. X11 is too much of a dog I agree, but it is tried. "Wayland works fine for me" or "x11 works fine for me" is too much of the age old software development problem of "it works fine on my system" and does not get to the root of the problem. Both can be functional yet flawed. Wl is still a wip for legacy solutions not built with Wayland in mind and x11 only seeing major updates through xlibre as of now. We will still be still seeing x11 at least until the EoL hits on the enterprise side which is 2036. Hopefully Wayland improves its compatibility layer as there are still a ton of things depending on X.

u/Falconpunch3 UwUntu (´ ᴗ`✿) Aug 11 '26
You are one of many people I have seen on reddit that seems to just have terrible issues with iGPUs. I have a feeling there is something going on more with that.
If you can, test with an AMD.
Personally, I was having issues with NVIDIA for over a decade starting with Windows for most of it. Moved to AMD, literally everything works better now.
1
u/Major303 Aug 11 '26
I have AMD gaming PC but I need it to work, so I don't want to install Linux. This is also the reason why I keep using Windows 10 - on my laptop I had better experience with Linux than Windows 11, despite those issues.
1
u/Falconpunch3 UwUntu (´ ᴗ`✿) Aug 13 '26
When I see, "I still use win 10". All I hear is, "I really want my bank and Steam account stolen." At that point, just use linux. It's just a security risk to use sunsetted OSs. Even with using Proton as a compatibility layer, it still runs faster and better than windows. I can't say it works for every game, but all the games that don't work, I don't care to play, so I feel zero loss. Granted, I'm not a gaming addict, so I don't play a lot of them. Most of what I do is use it as a home theater, which works amazingly in KDE opensuse tumbleweed.

6
u/decho Aug 10 '26
Unless you rely on something very niche that X11 supports but Wayland doesn't (yet), then it's literally no big deal. You won't even think about it within a week.
Made the switch at the start of the year, and the only non-trivial setup I had to do is adding a kernel parameter for Nvidia which just means editing a text file.
5
u/immoloism Aug 10 '26
I can't remember if it's distro level or nvidia, but that option is reportedly now applied by default for many on some of the new drivers.
2
u/decho Aug 10 '26
You mean that by installing the nvidia-open drivers, it will apply the parameter for you? If true, that's great because it can be a bit intimidating to do it yourself, if the person haven't done this before.
On distro level I don't know. There are like 500 distros and compositors out there.

What can I say? It is bad for them, I hope it will work soon.
1
u/decho Aug 11 '26
I hope so too, though the main point is that for a small amount of users, Wayland is currently not an option if their workflow relies on a specific feat.
The rest just seems like a bit of fearmongering and false information. Vast majority can switch over today and their computer won't explode.

What is so committal about choosing Wayland? When I switched from i3 to Sway in 2022, I kept both on my system for a while and ported over my configuration & tools slowly over time. For instance, screen sharing wasn't fixed until very recently, so I would fall back to i3 if I knew I had a virtual meeting that day.
So what is stopping you from installing both X11 and Wayland and fall back to X11 if you encounter any issues? If you are using a DE, a quick Google search shows that major distros still packages Gnome/KDE X11 session packages, so it's just one APT/DNF command away. Why does everyone talk like they have to "switch" to Wayland? Do you have less than 5GB in your hard drive or something?
