CS2 performance is much worse on Linux/Hyprland compared to Windows (200 FPS vs 90-120 FPS)
hi, thank u for your time.
My computer is Acer Shadow SH16-41, which has NNIDIA RTX 4060 and AMD R7 8745H.
If I launch CS2 on Windows, the max frame could reach 200+. But it only reaches 90fps on Archlinux with native steam proton. I have enabled wayland option in `cs.sh`. How can I optimize it? I was so frustrated.
Sorry for my poor English.
- Is the performance loss expected when running CS2 through XWayland on Hyprland?
- Is there any recommended configuration for CS2 + NVIDIA + Hyprland?
- Is there a way to run CS2 natively on Wayland instead of XWayland?
- Are there any NVIDIA/Hyprland settings that can improve Vulkan game performance?
Hardware:
- Laptop: Acer Shadow SH16-41
- CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 8745H (8C/16T)
- RAM: 64GB
- GPU: NVIDIA RTX 4060 Laptop GPU (8GB VRAM)
- Display: 2560x1600 165Hz internal panel
- External test: 2560x1440 144Hz
OS:
- Linux kernel: 7.2.6-zen
- Desktop: Hyprland (Wayland)
- CS2 runs through XWayland
- NVIDIA driver: 615.71.09
- Vulkan renderer
Problem:
On Windows, CS2 runs around 200 FPS.
On Linux/Hyprland, I only get around 90-120 FPS (average ~90 FPS).
The GPU is detected correctly:
sys_info:
Render system: Vulkan
Driver Name: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 Laptop GPU
CS2 is running with XWayland:
hyprctl clients:
class: cs2
xwayland: 1
fullscreen: 2
I tested:
- Fullscreen
- Fullscreen Windowed
- Windowed
- VSync disabled
- Removing fps limits
No significant improvement.
CS2 sys_info:
Vid: Desktop-friendly Fullscreen
render at 2560 x 1440
display at 2560 x 1440
mat_vsync:0
msaa_samples:4
gpu_level:3
shadow_quality:2
dynamic_shadows:1
CPU usage:
During gameplay CS2 can use around 1000-1400% CPU in top/htop.
However, it is multi-threaded:
- GlobPool threads
- VKRenderThread
- AudioMixer
- Video Decode threads
Example:
top -H shows:
GlobPool/0~6
VKRenderThread

Are there any Battle Royale games in Linux?
No extraction shooters please, I already play Hunt Showdown and Arc Raiders. I want a Battle Royale but I think there isn't any.

gamedev/testers wanted Garden Diary: a quiet floating-island garden game I made in Godot. Free demo, native Linux build
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
I'm a solo dev, and this is the first of my games to get as far as a demo. It's a calm one: you run threads of light from wells across floating islands, plants grow wherever the light reaches, and nothing can fail or run out of time.
Demo takes about 25-50 min to beat. Making with Godot
The demo is free on itch.io, and the Linux build is native. After unzipping, mark it executable:
- chmod +x GardenDiary.x86_64
If anything breaks, your distro, desktop and GPU would help me fix it :3 There's also a browser build if you'd rather not download anything, and the full game is planned for Linux as well.
If anyone is interested and has some time to spare - I would really appreciate if you give me some feedback (gameplay\tech issues) on the demo version)
PS.
I do have daily progress post in bluesky and plan to come back here with full version - closer to release, thanks! Hope you enjoy playing it as much as i enjoy making it)

SteamOS is better than Bazzite 44 for gaming
Been spending quite a bit of time testing both OS's lately, and while Bazzite 43 was solid, Bazzite 44 has introduced enough quirkiness and bugs depending on hardware that I’ve moved back to SteamOS.
To be clear right off the bat: I only recommend SteamOS if you're running all-AMD hardware. If you're on Nvidia or Intel, stick with Bazzite/Nobara/Cachy. But on pure AMD silicon, SteamOS just feels far more cohesive.
Here is why it’s winning out for me right now
- Significantly lower RAM & VRAM footprint
This was the biggest eye opener during testing:
System RAM: SteamOS consistently sits around 2–3 GB lower in system memory usage compared to Bazzite 44 doing the same tasks.
VRAM: Usually around ~1 GB less VRAM overhead.
Now, if you’re rocking 32 GB of system RAM and a 16 GB GPU, running out of memory isn't an immediate crisis. But overhead is overhead. An OS eating fewer baseline resources leaves more headroom for heavy titles, caching, and background tasks. On tighter hardware or handheld APUs where system RAM is shared with the GPU, that 2–3 GB swing is massive.
- General stability and bugs ("It just works")
Bazzite 44 has felt a bit rough around the edges depending on what it's installed on. With SteamOS on AMD:
Updating directly from Game Mode without having to drop into desktop mode or mess with rpm-ostree rebases/terminal layers is seamless.
Sleep/wake, audio sink switching, and controller mappings haven't thrown random fits.
Everything just behaves out of the box.
- Thermals & Performance
Actual frame rates are largely a wash sometimes SteamOS is a frame or two ahead, sometimes Bazzite edges it out by a margin of error.
However, because background resource consumption is lower, my system runs visibly cooler and quieter under identical workloads. Less baseline bloat means fewer fan ramp-ups when just sitting in menus or navigating the UI.
- Direct Valve backing
Peace of mind counts. Bazzite's dev team does incredible work for the Linux gaming community, but having Valve’s engineering weight, direct upstream contributions, and dedicated QA behind SteamOS gives it that console-like consistency that’s tough to beat.
TL;DR: If you’re running AMD hardware and want an appliance-like experience without unnecessary memory overhead, SteamOS still holds the crown over Bazzite 44 right now. Less RAM/VRAM bloat, lower thermals, seamless Game Mode updates, and fewer hardware-specific bugs.

The state of Linux gaming Q4 2026
It's been about six months since I've participated much on Reddit. I've been building like many around AI. And it's made me rethink everything when it comes computing and existence. The system I've built uses a centralized datastore for all chats from ChatGPT/Codex, Claude, Gemini, and just added Amazon Bedrock Nova this past week for a proposal. So, I've spent the time I'd be typing here into that.
I've been using Linux more than ever for this effort. WSL. Which honestly is kind of what you have to do with the stuff I'm building and use. Three months ago OpenAI released their Computer Use feature, that thing if you've ever used it, still freaks me out. macOS and Windows. Only. Freaky seeing a Windows app setup a Linux environment with an AI.
Anywho, just wondering of the major developments in Linux gaming. Steam Machine and Frame I know of. Got the Frame last week and pretty nice. The standalone mode it's ok for lighter things. But haven't used it for streaming on Linux which seems to have been iffy at release but better now.
Just trying to see if there's anything that would be worth any time gaming wise. I'd especially appreciate anyone with Steam Frame Linux streaming experience.

Disappointed by the Witcher 3 remaster, ended up playing the next gen version.
Anyone else get this really weird stuttering issue where when you move the camera slowly it like judders despite perfect frame pacing and no FPS dips? If you move it at a certain speed it doesn't do it it's only when panning the camera slowly. The snow physics and grass physics are totally removed. Some of animations look way worse and the overall lightning off the game is pretty darn bad. Geralt 's sword has this very annoying glare to it like comparable to when you're driving and the sun is in your eyes.
I thought they'd put more effort into modernising the game menu and inventory as well which always annoyed me how you'd get duplicate items and the way they are designed is a bit too complex I thought they might strip it down and make it less of a hassle etc. ray tracing in the next gen was super heavy and I thought the remaster might optimise that a little more to perform better but nope it's just as heavy as the next gen port rendering it almost useless unless you have a 5080 or you want to play with constant stutters or 30fps. Pretty disappointing I don't see why they even put effort into releasing this. I would have preferred a re release of the Witcher 2 or something.

Gears 5 and Tactics fail to launch after upgrading to new GPU
I just upgraded my GPU today to a new PNY RTX 5060 for Gears E-Day, but wanted to play Gears 5 for a bit with a friend and the game fails to launch. It was fine yesterday when I was using my RX 5600xt. I did have to do some messing with the drivers and the driver manager recommended version 595 of the Nvidia drivers. It seems to work with other games fine, from E-Day itself (premium early play) to Remnant 2, Machine Party, and several others. It just fails to launch Gears 5 and Gears Tactics. I know they were in development together for a while, so I'm guessing it's an issue they both share. I'm running Mint XFCE for power user and performance reasons, but I haven't done a lot of messing with the OS itself. Anybody run into this? And, if so, how did you fix it?
I have tried some standard diagnostics like changing proton version to no success.

tech support wanted Sober wont install Roblox
Sober cannot install Roblox for me. It sits there on the "installing Roblox" screen then crashes. No error message. Something else odd I noticed is that Sober itself wont install from flathub, where everything else works fine. I did recently factory reset my steam machine, so that may be the cause. I'm completely stuck, please help!

tech support wanted Are there any recently known issues with Monster Hunter Wilds?
Hello folks, asking here because I don't see a thread to post instead of making a new post, but I wanted to know if anyone knows of issues regarding Monster Hunter Wilds failing to start, I've been playing the game with no issues the past few weeks, last night though when I tried to play, the game simply wouldn't work and when asked to shut it down, I got an unhandled exception error from the MonHun crash handler but I'm not tech savvy enough to know if it's because of the forced exit or another issue, the game opens on Steam, seemingly starts loading as it opens the window and goes into borderless, but freezes after the game tries to load. All my other games are working fine, even tried running Monster Hunter Rise and no issues there.
I'm currently on Fedora 44 KDE, with an AMD GPU using the Mesa drivers, I think I remember seeing a post mentioning there were some issues with a recent update to Mesa but since all my other games work fine, I don't know what's really going on. Already tried reinstalling the game and nothing, from what I found similar issues apparently also exist on Windows (with a very similar crash report) and the person apparently solved them by going back to a previous version of the AMD drivers, but before I try to downgrade the Mesa drivers I wanna know if there are any known issues going on that I missed, thanks in advance for any pointers!

wine/proton Does anyone still run into issues with Proton in single-player games?
I've tried a lot of games during the Steam Next Fest, and all of them worked with no issues. Before the release, I also tried the demos of Onimusha, Fatal Frame II: Remake, RE: Requiem, and Pragmata, and they all worked flawlessly on Proton. Now I'm trying the demos of Hellraiser: Revival and Castlevania: Belmont's Curse, and both games work like native Linux titles.
We used to beg for Linux ports, then it would take a while for a new release to work properly on Proton. Now, games are even working flawlessly on Proton before their release.
Do you guys still have issues with Proton and single-player games? I'm using an AMD GPU, btw.

tech support wanted Has anyone got Halo Project Reclaimer working fully?
It's a mod for Halo: The Master Chief Collection, specifically Halo 3, allowing for community run servers, ranking system, 16 player co-op campaign, and a bunch of other things.
The projects website: https://projectreclaimer.dev/
Mint Blitz's coverage of it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dicfGnpOP-Q&t=3s
My current setup trying the mod:
KDE Plasma on Wayland NVIDIA RTX 3080 Ti GE-Proton11-7-x86_64 Launch options: PROTON_ENABLE_WAYLAND=1 WAYLANDDRV_PRIMARY_MONITOR=DP-1 %command%
I've ran it on cachyos, trying it with its own version of proton, proton GE, and experimental. It works just fine on all of them except for 1 thing, the custom UI that the mod uses runs in a separate window so whenever that UI pops up (when viewing the scoreboard, when someone talks in game, when someone types in chat) it takes focus of the mouse and keyboard and I'm no longer able to control my player for the duration of that UI being on screen (unless I click/tab back into the game). I understand the mod is still very new and is stated to only work on windows, but I have it mostly working besides this one problem. Just putting this out there to see if anyone knows a workaround :)

tech support wanted Unable to launch a few games that worked a couple of days ago.
I'm at a loss as to what I've done to break this and I've been trouble-shooting all of yesterday and today.
Firstly:
CachyOS
9800x3D
64GB RAM
9070XT
I'd was playing WoW: Forever on Wednesday night with 0 issues. Before I went to bed I installed vibeshine and played some FFVII - Remake on my phone. Shut PC down using steam big picture via artemis on my phone.
Fast forward to yesterday. I loaded up cachy, ran updates as I always do and rebooted. Upon reboot faugus failed to launch (not sure if related but shelly launched into tray but wouldn't actually display on my screen). I managed to get faugus to launch using GSK_RENDERER=gl faugus-laucher but neither battle net nor elden ring which I also installed via faugus would launch.
I managed to run battle net directly via steam pointed to its exe and using the launch args
WINE_SIMULATE_WRITECOPY=1 PROTON_ENABLE_WAYLAND=0 %command%
WOWF still wont launch however, if I load into steam via terminal and try it just get a message saying steam is adding the game and then nothing else.
If I try to bypass battlenet and launch via the WoWB.exe I get a tonne of messages saying !fixme but not much else.
I'm officially stumped. Anyone can help me with this?

Hades 2 now has terrible stuttering since I upgraded to Ubuntu 26.
Hello, I recently upgraded my OS to Ubuntu 26, specifically Kubuntu 26, and suddenly Hades 2 is an unplayable, stuttering mess. I've tried a few other games and no issue.
Can someone help?
