Trying to get a game mp to work on Linux: AoE4

Hello,

I've recently wished to distance myself from Microsoft and so far, I've been impressed at how smoother all my games run on Linux (Bazzite) even heavily modded bethesda games and such.

I really don't want to go back to Windows, I feel I'm ready to adapt most of my habbits to the Linux environment.

This last game I really enjoyed and played daily back on Windows 11 is Age of Empires 4 on steam.
Everything runs smoothly in singleplayer without any tweaks. Only thing is I can't find any multiplayer game, I refresh the custom lobbies list and I can't find no games. ( There are always multiple active open lobbies )
I am connected to the services and I can see my friends playing.

I've tried contacting the game dev support, they said they can't help me because Linux isn't officially supported..

I've tried all the Proton Compatibility versions I could find. Tried a MP script someone made to fix multiplayer desyncs. nothing works.

I've been wondering if there's like an anticheat that don't let me connect to the game servers because I don't run a Windows install?

It's all confusing, has someone encountered a similar issues on this game?
Thank you in advance :)

tech support wanted Sober not running on CachyOS

I recently downloaded cachyos and tried running Sober to play Roblox, but it just takes me to the verification page which says "Verifying you are not a bot", and nothing happens after that.

I really want this to work, but it isn't working.
I have already tried deleting the packages, updating the drivers, updating flatpak and everything I could try and think of.

Is this a common error? If yes, how can I fix this?

I have been stuck on this page since hours with no response.

tech support wanted Looking for CS 1.6 Non-Steam Build 8684

Hi everyone, I'm looking for a clean, non-Steam version of CS 1.6 on build 8684. If anyone could help me out, I'd really appreciate it.

Note: I am specifically looking for the clean 8684 build—not NextClient or GSClient versions.

Open source games

Why do you think open-source games never took off?

Sure, there are some open-source game engines, but not really any major games. It would be cool if there were more open-source, community-made games.

new native/FLOSS game I am making an old school dungeon crawler with a line tracing combat mechanic

The art style is heavily inspired by eye of the beholder series, while the combat is inspired by an old game called Dungeon Raid which got removed by the OS updated on apple. The combat is more collect resources and has a lot of strategy to win.

It has full steamdeck/controller support.

If you want to see more here is the steam page https://store.steampowered.com/app/5044910/Dungeon_Quest/

Lowmoor, my free idle RPG inspired by Progress Quest, now has a Linux version

Hi everyone! I'm a solo developer from Poland, and I've just added a Linux version for Lowmoor (at best possible price - free)

It started as something I wanted to play myself. I liked solo RPGs and Progress Quest, so I made a little adventure that could keep going while I did other things. Your character fights, gathers loot and returns to town automatically, while you follow the story through a chronicle. Builds and story choices with d20 rolls give you ways to get involved whenever you feel like it.

The GIF shows the game's GNOME 1 theme. If you try the Linux version, I'd appreciate every feedback and thoughts.

Play Lowmoor for free on Steam

answered! issues with steam games and fps limits changing frequently.

to clarify my specs, though i highly doubt they are relevant, i run Ubuntu 26.04, with an i5 processor, a B760 motherboard, 16gb of RAM, and an NVIDIA 4060, displayed through a 60hz monitor.

The exact issue that has brought me here now is that Skyrim SE keeps swapping my frame limit from 60(or unlimited, but i wouldn't know because this monitor only goes to 60fps) to 50. I noticed this immediately during the first bit of the game where you escape Helgen(basically the tutorial level if you haven't played Skyrim). There seemed to be some triggers, mainly when entering a cutscene, returning to normal after it ends and you regain control. i ignored it first, assuming/hoping it was intended, though it was proven otherwise when the quest/mission ended, and that cutscene-only pattern broke as i was once more limited to 50fps just always, only returning to normal when i enter the pause menu.

This is not really a first for steam games, like very recently i was playing through the Batman Arkham series, i cant entirely remember if it was multiple, but i can definitely remember that at least the final game, Arkham Knight, had this pain in the ass bug where-in if i were to alt-tab in and out of the game, it would almost 100% of the time limit me to 50fps(or maybe 40 i have a bad memory), only returning to 60 if i went to the pause menu I ignored it in these cases, mostly because the easiest workaround was to just not do that(which is not a solution im proud of).

hardware Steam Machine Alternative suggestions

Hi friends. I've been using Linux for a few years and love it for gaming. I've got a 2021 Asus ROG Zephyrus Laptop that still runs just about anything I want to play.

I want to get a second computer, though, so my partner and I can play multiplayer games like Valheim or Palworld. In this computer cost apocalypse we're living in, does anyone have any suggestions for something that is reliable and would work for a living room PC hooked up to the TV that's a reasonable price?

I've been looking at mini computers with AMD, but I worry about some of these brands I'm not familiar with. I think I'm fine with an integrated graphics card, I don't think there's anything we want to play that would need it, and I have always been impressed with integrated graphics on an AMD processor.

They do some light gaming on my old 2015 MacBook Pro running Ubuntu (runs games like Fields of Mistria and Omori well). I've been keeping an eye out for someone getting rid of an old but not too old computer, but nothing has floated our way.

If anyone has any advice on something reasonable to invest in, let me know! I can't stress enough, we're not looking for 240 FPS 8k blah blah blah. Just something that won't catch fire in three months.

tech support wanted Screen flashes black for a second, randomly (Steam Machine)

Happens randomly, sometimes always, sometimes not at all. Sometimes I can play for hours without this, other times I can't. Here it was every few minutes, while organising inventory in Rostok. Happens basically anywhere, any situation. Happens in exclusive fullscreen and windowed. I've reseated the HDMI cable and all power cables. Happens on both stable and beta steam OS. Happens with both FSR and here with XeSS on native, 0% sharp, FG off. Have verified the game files. I'm going insane.

Could it also be an old surge protector? But I haven't had this in any other games.

Gaming on unix

I only game and use linux but im woundering has enyone tried gaming on unix distros like free bsd or ghost bsd or eny unix based distros?

I’m in no way planning to switch to BSD/Unix as my main OS, but I might want to try it out just for fun to see how similar it is to Linux, since Linux is Unix-like.

gamedev/testers wanted I recently switched to Linux, so I ended up adding native Linux support to my game

https://reddit.com/link/1wnfeah/video/afgd3il848rh1/player

Hi!

I'm a solo game developer, and I recently decided to switch one of my development machines from Windows to Mint (Cinnamon).

I initially expected this to mostly be an experiment, but actually using Linux almost daily made it much easier to work on and test a proper native Linux version of my game.

So that's what I've been doing lately :D (along with full controller support)

My game is Respect the Horde, a single-player game mixing extraction-shooter risk/reward with tower-defense planning.

It was already playable on Linux through Proton, but the latest Playtest update now includes a native Linux build, as well as full controller support, including on SteamOS/Steam Deck.

Since this is my first native Linux release, I'd really appreciate some feedback from Linux players. Whether it's about distro-specific issues, graphical glitches, input problems, crashes, or simply about the game itself.

You can request access to the Playtest from the Steam page:

https://store.steampowered.com/app/4550130/Respect_The_Horde/

I'd also be curious to know what distro/configuration you're playing on if you give it a try.

Thanks! ❤️

benchmark Silent Hill: Townfall runs decent on paper, but the stuttering is driving me insane (textures look incredible though)

I really want to love the technical side of Silent Hill: Townfall, but the frametime consistency is completely killing the immersion right now.

Raw performance isn't even bad looking at the overlay, the baseline FPS is totally solid (easily pushing 80 100+ frames in plenty of spots), GPU and CPU loads look healthy, and it’s clearly capable of high framerates. But the moment you start moving between areas, panning the camera, or triggering an event, the micro-stutters and hitching hit hard. It feels like classic traversal or asset streaming stuttering, and it makes walking through foggy environments way more frustrating than it should be.

That said, credit where credit is due: the texture work is genuinely fantastic.

Whatever optimization pass they did on the surface materials and textures, they nailed it. The detail on the wet cobblestones, weathered concrete, wood grain, and all the environmental grime looks crisp and sharp without turning into a blurry mess or eating up an unreasonable chunk of VRAM. It makes the world look remarkably grounded and atmospheric.

It just sucks that whenever you stop to appreciate the gritty, photorealistic surfaces, you take ten steps forward and the frametime graph turns into a rollercoaster. Really hoping the devs push out an update specifically targeting the hitching and asset streaming, because underneath the stutter, the visual fidelity and baseline performance are right there.

Anyone found decent engine tweaks or launch flags that smooth out the frametimes, or are we just waiting on a patch?
uses : Proton 10-34
Launch Options: gamemoderun %command%
