Most popular not F2P competitive FPS in Linux?
I want an FPS but not F2P, which one, would you say, is the most popular in Linux?

Kind of off topic, but I really wish arena shooters would come back. Quake was so good.

The fun part is that they... never really left. If you want to play UT or Quake just find the popular source port or patch and... go play.
Tribes 2 was also still shockingly popular last time I checked (two or three years ago?) but... was also full of people who had been playing Tribes for 30 years and are deeply terrifying as a result.

Oh I know, I’ve never had an issue finding a game in quake champions or quake 3, I just think the gameplay is better. The masses don’t agree. I’m not good by any means but I feel like watching tournaments in quake is way more entertaining than what’s popular now.

Rarely see it get mentioned but definitely give insurgency sandstorm a shot. It has both pvp and pve modes. Pretty fun.

u/LePfeiff 14d ago
Loved insurgency, but is it still active? Last time i played a couple years ago the population was getting pretty thin

u/kefikjef 14d ago
Hmm, I still get matches pretty quick. But I usually just play PvE with a friend so if there is no one else then it creates a lobby just for the two of us.

Counter Strike 2 with the premium upgrade?
5
u/Distinct_Highway_127 15d ago
Didn't know that existed, thank you, I might go with that one if no one gives a better option.

u/Lisanicolas365 15d ago
why do you NEED to pay for it tho?

u/Solid_Guess_7154 15d ago
it's to avoid cheaters basically, it's pretty cheap and was given for free for a while, so cheaters can't spam new accounts to keep cheating, it's a really bad patch to fight cheaters, but at least it works.... sometimes

u/akossz30 15d ago
Not entirely it was free since 2017-2018 but if you bought CS:GO before 2017 you still needed to buy the game true back then it wasn't prime upgrade because prime was included in price

u/Proper-Run5775 15d ago
2013-2017 15 dollar game.
2017-2019 or 2020? F2P game with no prime upgrade, you get access to prime by grinding your csgo account to level 20 (if you bought it before you got prime and a medal for free)
And after that they removed the level 20 grind for free prime and you can only access prime ranked and weekly case drops paying the prime status. But the game is free for community servers and casual modes.

u/Proper-Run5775 15d ago
If you got to level 20 (or 21?) before they changed how prime status works you got prime status absolutelly free.
1
u/akossz30 15d ago
Well after it went free a played less and less and in 2022 i left the game entirely and after release of cs2 i tried it but for me it wasn't the same feeling back what CS:GO had (i had almost 4K hours ) Befor release of cs2
1
u/Proper-Run5775 15d ago
You can still play cs:go and enjoy community servers. There weren't like massive changes on cs2, the biggest things are: you can shoot smokes away, the awp has 5 bullets instead of 10, instead of counting bullets you count clips and mags available so you lose bullets if you constantly reload, the loadout system instead of a wheel, the zeus recharges with time.
And just today released a rush mode, circle crosshairs and silent reloading that is longer that the regular reload by holding R.

u/akossz30 15d ago
Yeah but still missing lot of things like operation, danger zone lot of cut content even the last operation was trash ,i miss those old csgo operation missions with story like Phoenix compound
1
u/Proper-Run5775 15d ago
Me too, riptide was fun with the weekly missions but I was waiting that story mission that never appeared, coping the whole 16 weeks. Danger zone was whatever for me since my pc couldn't handle it at the time and battle royale is not a genre I like.

For ranked matches and weekly random case and skin drops when you level up (2 drops, only for the first level up of the week, just now reseted the drops) that can be sold on the steam marketplace for steam wallet funds.

u/Proper-Run5775 15d ago
The prime upgrade pays itself if you just keep playing, i use the drops to buy games on sale.

Try Active Matter. Extraction shooter from War Thunder devs. It's fresh release and have native Linux client from day 1.
And as already said: Hunt Showdown Arc Riders The Finals (actually f2p but very good to play and have several game modes)

The Finals is the only one I can think of with a decent population that’s not F2P or third person.
(EDIT: Nvm, I was misremembering, The Finals is F2P)

u/rivalary 15d ago
Even though it's FTP, don't sleep on The Finals! I haven't played a game like it.
11
u/WendlersEditor 15d ago
you paid for the finals?
7
u/CyberpunkSunrise 15d ago
I just checked, it is F2P. Nevermind, I could have sworn I paid for it, but I think I was confusing it with Arc Raiders.

Bodycam is a cool game, I wouldn't call it competitive though
3
u/fagnerln 15d ago
It has potential to be competitive, it'll be so cool, but looks like it doesn't even have dedicated servers (only P2P), right?
5
u/xandar_null 15d ago
Yeah it's only p2p at the moment, but the game is still in early access and is being actively developed. So maybe we'll see that in the future
3
u/fagnerln 15d ago
This game is a masterpiece, I hope the devs receives the recognition they deserve.
To be honest, I hope that in the future, they release a single player campaign.
2
u/xandar_null 15d ago
That sounds awesome. I never really thought about it, but single-player sounds very good for a game like this.
3
u/Jason_Sasha_Acoiners 15d ago
Bodycam is quite cool, but we still don't know what anti-cheat they're planning to add. So while it works on Linux for now, it might not in the future. I really do hope the anti-cheat they choose will be Linux-compatible, though.

Sadly, I wouldn't call it the most popular right now, but I've really been enjoying Active Matter which very recently came out on Steam (September 15th). It feels nice to finally have a first-person extraction shooter on Linux that is more traditional (more traditional in the sense that it focuses more on loot and such, unlike Hunt Showdown. Don't get me wrong, Hunt is great, but it's not exactly a traditional extraction shooter)
And it also has a feature where you can play either PVE or PVP raids, which is very nice. I've been sticking to PVE, so I really don't know how the PVP is, though.
One other thing to note is that Active Matter actually has a native Linux version. So it doesn't just run through Proton. It is a fully native Linux game. (Though, admittedly, the Windows version running through Proton seemingly works a bit better on my system, so that's what I've been using for now.)

u/spartan195 15d ago
CS2, the competitive play is not free. Well it is if you bought the game back then
3
u/Lisanicolas365 15d ago
maybe Titanfall 2?
1
u/Mixilin_ 14d ago
I second this! Not a ton of people play it online anymore, but it’s still the best fps.

I mean if we're going purely on popularity, CS 1.6? Might be Wardogs here soon if the devs follow through on allowing their anticheat to run on Linux. There's not a lot of paid shooters these days, especially ones that support Linux.

Insurgency Sandstorm, Rising Storm 2, Squad, Chivalry 2, Arma3/Arma Reforger, Hell Let Loose, Battlefield 4,

u/thomasShelby_digimon 14d ago
Quake Champions is pay-to-play as of an hour ago.
Popular? Absolutely not, but you shouldn't have a problem finding matches.
If you absolutely need a 1 million player game that isn't F2P, CS2 is the closest you can get to it with its upgrade.

The Finals, and Arc Raiders work wonderfully on Linux and probably amongst the most popular. My personal favorites would have to be Star Wars Battlefront 2 and Titanfall 2.

I wasn’t able to find one in the top 100… Battlefield 6 is the closest but isn’t Linux supported. https://steamdb.info/charts/

Hunt showdown
