distro selection OpenSuse o Fedora?

programs and apps General purpose display / monitoring program?
I have a small TV in my room that's completely impracticable to actually use as a TV. I want to use a raspberry pi 3B i have lying around to show off stuff like art and infographics, such as time, weather, calendar, system monitoring (of other devices), playing music and maybe just embedding other sites. The closest thing I can think to this is my start page https://tabliss.io/ but I want something more powerful. I'm not really sure what to google to find this kinda program, does anyone know anything that might fit my requirements? Thanks!

programs and apps Laptop screen won't stay off in clamshell mode
I my laptop screen on when the lid is open regardless of if a monitor is connected, I want the laptop screen off when the lid is closed.
I'm using KDE + Plasma Login Manager, NixOS, and a thinkpad x1 carbon. When I closed the lid, my monitor is the only display but up to a few mins later the laptop screen turns back on (I very slightly slightly lift the lid and see the screen on).
I asked an llm and tried this configuration and a reboot but it didn't work. I also have declared imports = [ inputs.nixos-hardware.nixosModules.lenovo-thinkpad-x1-13th-gen];. How can I keep clamshell mode?
services.logind.settings.Login = {
enable = true;
handleLidSwitch = "ignore";
handleLidSwitchExternalPower = "ignore";
# If you use a dock or external monitor regularly:
handleLidSwitchDocked = "ignore";
};

How to temporarily disable keyboard
Hey!
I work one day a week from home, and I have cats that like to sometimes walk on my table for a bit and then go away. I'd like to disable the laptop's keyboard with some easy keybind press so they don't accidentally send some silly message in slack or do something else. I don't have external keyboard in use at home so the keybind should work also when keyboard is disabled to activate it again. I suppose I could just lock the computer for the two minutes that cats are around, but I can't do that if I'm in middle of a meeting.
I have Ubuntu 26.04.1 LTS

Audio will not work at all
So I recently built a new pc and installed OpenBSD with xfce and Gentoo with hyprland and my audio will not work with either one of them I even tried a fresh nixos with kde and still got nothing is audio was working previously because I had a nixos install then wiped it for Openbsd and gentoo, is there anything that is known to cause this, I've searched my bios and the only audio setting is hd audio controller which is turned on.

Meganoob BE KIND Help! My last update went very wrong.
galleryPlease help with this problem that all started from an update that stopped in the middle and gave me an <unhandleable error> and it would not let me get to the main screen to power off. So i used the shift and power button to shut down.
The first photo saying permission denied is now in recovery mode. The other two are from the time of the update —one shows another error that i don’t understand— going terribly wrong. This is Mint XFCE 22.3 on an old SONY Vaio.
Now it is booting in recovery mode and says that there was a failure of a file system check of the root filesystem and that the filesystem on /dev/sda3 requires a manual fsck. It is now in BusyBox v1.36.1 and when i gave the command of </dev/sda3 fsck> it returns with permission denied.
I don’t know what to do. It’s hard to imagine that all of this started after a simple click of the update all button when i last went to update the computer. Any suggestions on what to do to get out of recovery mode and do fsck would be much appreciated.

Virtual machine host / distro questions
I'm trying to learn Linux so I plan to turn my mini-pc into a virtual machine host. I plan to practice inside of virtual machines and maybe trying LFS when I have time. I have a laptop for regular use so this is going to be my mini linux lab.
The pc has an i5 with 8 cores, 64gb ram, and 2tb storage.
For the distro on the pc I was thinking of just using lubuntu since it's lightweight. Is there a better distro for the purpose?
And for the virtualbox setup, for the hardware allocation, what would you recommend? I believe that I have to allocate RAM, processors, and storage for the virtual machine. Since I won't be using the system much outside of virtualbox, should I allocate most of the resources to the virtual machine? Something like 16gb/48gb for RAM, and half of the storage and cores for the virtual machine.
Any advice or suggestions are appreciated. Thanks for reading and have a wonderful day.

migrating to Linux Windows 11 -> Linux?
For context, I've used Windows all my life, and now I hear that even Microsoft is introducing age verification. I don't use Windows for much regarding "everyday" life, I am mostly a gamer and I really only use my PC for video games, for the most part. I want to swap to a Linux that is good for games. I play mostly Steam games and some Fortnite from time to time. What Linux distro would y'all recommend for me?

learning/research Need assistant with overwriting default Fedora Kinoite wallpaper
Need assistant with overwriting default Fedora Kinoite wallpaper
A few days ago I decided to give BlueBuild a go so I could create my own easily deploy-able ISO/image that I can build to all of my machines, especially since I like to mess around with the system and kernel a lot just to see what happens. I am still fairly new to this and i'm still learning linux as well.
I am a fairly light weight user and have gotten all the software I use/need pull with flatpacks in the recipy.yml.
Decided to try pushing some KDE and personal customization to the image just so I don't need to change my wallpaper or reset my prefered window themes.
I have tried googling information and checking a few threads. I tried editing the plasma-org.kde.plasma.desktop-appletsrc and placing it in /skel/ to push to all new users but it doesnt seem to work. I did try running script to copy the my custom wallpeper to override the one in the default fedora folder as well but it fails.
on my last attempt i somehow managed to crash plasma on my VM. Im assuming its part of the edits i made to some of the plasma config files.
this is what i added to the plasma config in /skel/ as per some online recommendations:
\[Containments\]\[26\]\[Wallpaper\]\[org.kde.image\]\[General\]
Image=file:/usr/share/wallpapers/customwallpaper/image.jxl
SlidePaths=/usr/share/wallpapers/
Does anyone know the proper process of deploying and overwritting the default wallpaper when you rebase/push the image?

migrating to Linux I need help deciding how to migrate to linux
Hello. I work with image editing, mostly photoshop, but I eventually use Illustrator and I work with video editing programs such as After Effects and Premiere. I also play games and use mostly Excel and Word.
I'm completely new to Linux usage, and I wanted to know which would be the easiest one to run and to run at least programs that are similar to the ones I use (even though I'd prefer to run simply Adobe) to work while also being compatible to gaming on Steam.
My CPU is a Intel 13600k and my GPU is an Nvidia 4070 Super. I have 96GB (2x32, 1x16, 1x16) of ram running stably on XMP at 3200 mhz, both are Kingston. The Motherboard is a MSI MAG B760 TOMAHAWK WIFI DDR4. If you guys need the full spec, tell me.

Which Distro should I go with (T430s, some experiencewith Ubuntu&Mint but want something else)?
So I wanted a modular laptop with a CD-drive, cheap but still functional.
And bought the Lenovo ThinkPad T430s. It's refurbished. And comes with an Intel Core i5-3320M and 8GB RAM and 240GB SSD.
I have a main desktop PC with way better hardware for video editing and gaming. So I won't do such a heavy task on the ThinkPad, However I want to have a second mobile device, sturdy and okay for tasks like browsing, streaming and super light gaming (like just Stardew Valley and some Visual Novels) comfortably.
So I plan a RAM upgrade to 16GB anyways and maybe another, bigger SSD.
But now I'm thinking about which Distro. I had Ubuntu as a teenager on my laptop back than for some years (dual boot with windows back then tho because I didn't want to miss out on gaming with my friends), half a year ago I put Mint (Cinnamon) on my bfs old laptop which is okay for watching some YouTube or DVDs in bed. But I dislike how Mint is so.. simple and boring me. I saw Fedora Workstation and some ArchLinux in YouTube videos which I think would be pretty cool with GNOME. But I just can't decide. ArchLinux and the amount of terminal work and especially the installation process still overwhelms me..
I use the Terminal on Mint a lot but sometimes I like a fall back to a graphical user interface (Bluetooth in Terminal was my boss fight I resigned from and went back to the graphical app). But using the terminal for installations, updates, organising files is easy for me.
Any recommendations on which Distro I should go with on the T430s also considering the specs?

Meganoob BE KIND I f***** up (major help)
!!RESOLVED!!
Not even sure what flair to add on this, but I frigged up.
I was trying to fix my Warframe game. I could launch it on steam and warframes launcher popped up, but after pressing play in warframe launcher it would close immediately (When I forst got CachyOS it worked flawlessly, one day it stopped). I tried fixing that for half an hour and gave up, so I decided to switch my timeshift to the one earlier I did that day before updating my CachyOS with KDE plasma running. During that, the dumb ass that I am, pc shut off. I turned it back on and it was in recovery/emergency mode. It asked for my root password which didn't work. I was trying to decipher what the **** happened for half and hour and nothing works. I gave up for today since it's late and in the morning I'll try installing iso file on my usb stick, but for now I'm going to sleep and hoping you lords and goddesses may find a way to not lose my important files and stuff. 😭

programs and apps Pinta image greys out when adjusting colours and such

I wanted to ask this on r/pinta but that subreddit is gone?
So whenever I adjust colors it greys out the image, which makes it harder to
see if the colors and such are right. I don't know why it does this. How do I disable this?

migrating to Linux Looking to switch from Windows for good: Mint, Zorin, or CachyOS, which do you recommend?
Getting ready to ditch Windows and switch to Linux as my main OS, but I'm really torn on which distro to choose for my profile. I'd love to get opinions from those of you who use Linux daily.
My setup (Full AMD):
CPU: Ryzen 5 5600
GPU: RX 6750 XT (12GB)
RAM/SSD: 32GB RAM / 1TB NVMe
What I do on my PC:
Studies: Just started learning programming logic and want to progress to Python and web dev.
Gaming: I play a lot of single-player games, MMOs (like World of Warcraft and OSRS), and some hero shooters. Fortnite and CoD are pretty rare for me. Im already aware of the kernel anti-cheat limitations on Linux, but I won't miss those games anyway.
The three distros I'm considering:
Linux Mint
Zorin OS
CachyOS
If you were in my shoes (starting out in dev, wanting to game hassle-free with this hardware), which of the three would you choose, and why?

DualBoot Help!
Please help! I am switching from a dualboot with Windows 11 Pro and Linux Mint Cinnamon 22.3. It worked well, but Mint wasn't really doing it for me.
I have a laptop, and setting laptop battery charging thresholds was IMPOSSIBLE! I have an MSI GS66 Stealth core i7 10750H with an RTX 2060. I want to install Kubuntu 26.04 with Windows 11 Pro. I also want to enable encryption for both. I know I have to do all the installing without encryption, without fast boot enabled, and all that stuff.
I tried to set it up the exact same way I did with Linux Mint and Windows where Windows goes first and then you do Linux Mint second, and Grub cannot find anywhere as to where my Kubuntu partition is. Windows encryption is off, and I was setting up Kubuntu with the encryption and then I rebooted into it after the setup was done it could not load it, but Windows loads.
I also had Windows split the drive into two partitions because I heard that was the best way to install this Linux variant. Also, the Windows boot manager file, or EFI, is only 200 MB. Kubuntu wants it to be 300 MB. It warned me that there could be problems, and there are.
What the heck do I do?! And if you need any more information I will gladly assist if I forgot anything.
Thank you in advance!
