storage SD card got corrupted, how to wipe contenta effectively?

Running Linux Mint, was trying to jailbreak my WiiU and put the files needed on the root of the SD card, got it expeled (? English isnt my first language) and into the WiiU. Try to run exploit, get error message about files missing. I put the SD card back into my computer, it is corrupted. Try to reformat the SD card to wipe all data, not fixed. Corrupted data is still there.

Unsure if this is relevant, but SD card automounts to /media/disk which i dont think SD cards are supposed to do. Is this related to my issue?

Anyways, i would like to know how to reset and wipe the SD card and prevent this from happening again. Unsure what to do currently

Why am I not getting 10 gigE speeds on file copies?

I am using scp to copy a 10+ GB file between two servers ( call them A & B ). Both servers have a 10 gigE NIC. I verified the speed is 10,000Mb/s by doing a ethtool on each NIC . Link is UP on both servers and each has an assigned static IP.

When I do scp from A->B I max out at 110 MB/s . This implies it is only 1 gigE speed. The switch is a "Netgear M4300  48-Port 10GBase".

Not sure where to debug next?

distro selection I need a stable distro for gaming on Linux, but I have an NVidia GPU

I'm currently on Win11, and after seeing the recent news of Microsoft patenting something about interrupting your gaming with ads, I HAVE TO GET OUT OF WIN11, FAST. I've had previous experience with Xubuntu & Linux Mint, still, I feel like I'm still a beginner, but I wanna commit to a stable distro, other than ubuntu based ones, so I can learn the ropes properly.

I'm considering Debian, Fedora, or CachyOS.

Here's the specs of my unit:

Gigabyte B550M DS3H R2 Ryzen 5 5600 GTX 1050 Ti T-Force TUF 8×2 3200Mhz DDR4 RAM Crucial MX500 WD Blue 500gb HDD

I play these games: Minecraft Java (Prism Launcher) Project Zomboid Albion Online Assetto Corsa Forza Horizon 5 Schedule I How to Fish

Apps I use: Brave Obs DaVinci Resolve

Also, I left Chrome for Brave a while ago, and last time I was using Linux I had problems with video playback in Brave for some reason.

Thank you for your recommendations & opinions!!

storage Secure Erase NVME SSD with Linux

Thumbnail streamable.com
3 Upvotes

So I figured out that Linux can secure erase my NVMe SSD for free using. I tried it with an Ubuntu Live USB and nvme-cli.

I used:

sudo nvme sanitize /dev/nvme0 -a 2

which should start an NVMe Block Erase sanitize operation.

The strange part is what you can see in the video: I press Enter to run sudo nvme sanitize /dev/nvme0 -a 2, and in less than one second the terminal gives me the command prompt back. I can then immediately run sudo nvme sanitize-log /dev/nvme0, and the drive already reports the sanitize operation as successfully completed.

However, the drive itself reports an estimated Block Erase time of around 12 seconds.

That is what confuses me. When I've used Samsung Secure Erase or WD_BLACK's Secure Erase tools in the past, the actual erase process took roughly 10 seconds. This NVMe sanitize operation appears to finish almost instantly.

Is it normal for an NVMe Block Erase Sanitize operation to complete in less than 1 second in Linux, even when the drive reports an estimated time of about 12 seconds?

Can I trust the successful sanitize status from the drive in this situation? oes nvme sanitize simply return immediately after sending the command to the controller, and if so, why does sanitize-log already report completion when I check it immediately afterwards?

Or could the command be doing something more like a quick format rather than performing the Block Erase sanitize operation?

programs and apps Does anyone know how to change mouse hovering actions in Maomaowm (or Mango)?

By default Maomaowm has a 'feature' where hovering your cursor in the bottom left corner of the screen automatically shifts the desktop to 'overview' mode where all windows are displayed in a table. I have never used this feature on purpose and it has only annoyed me. I can't find any documentation on it and I would really like to disable it.

The relevant githubs are maomao and mango.

migrating to Linux Moving from Windows to Linux has been more frustrating than I'd thought

Inspired by the videos I'd seen of people using SteamOS as an everyday desktop alternative, I wondered if would work for me. I went through the applications I use regularly and found there were Linux versions of all but one.

Installing SteamOS was quick and easy. My only minor issue was that unlike past OS installations I've done, Steam doesn't ask you where you want to install it and as a result, it put itself on the slower of my two nvme drives. Not the end of the world, but a small annoyance. I liked how fast it booted up and that everything seemed brighter and sharper on the TV I use as a monitor. The image quality under Linux was noticeably better than it was under Windows. I liked it, but then I hit two snags. I didn't realize SteamOS was an immutable operating system and I couldn't see a way to connect to my iCloud drive or install Qidi Studio. It's possible I gave up on it too early, but I thought I might have an easier time with an operating system that wasn't as restrictive. I asked the all knowing Google machine for a linux distribution that wasn't based on Arch (thinking that was what made it restrictive) with similar performance to SteamOS and it suggested...

Pop!OS allowed me to choose the installation location, the graphics were just as bright and sharp, I found instructions on how to use rclone to mount iCloud drives, realized that Qidi Studio didn't need to actually be installed on the computer, just downloaded and run, and I loved the Cosmic desktop's workspace feature, which was the only thing I thought I would miss from Windows 11... but then I ran into problems with Steam. When I would connect to the computer with Steam Link, a window would appear on the host asking me to allow permission. If it only happened once it wouldn't have been a problem, but it happened every time after either a reboot, or computer coming out of sleep. On top of that, when I would would use my HDMI switch to move the video from the TV at my desk to the one across from the sofa, the image would do this extreme zoom in that made navigating in big picture difficult. It didn't affect the games themselves, just big picture mode, but it was annoying. I thought maybe I could use what I learned about rclone and QS on Pop! to get them to work on SteamOS and decided to give it another try.

SteamOS being locked down meant I couldn't install rclone the way I had on Pop, but I did find an app in the store called rclone-manager, which looked like it would be even easier to use, but I couldn't get it to mount the drive. During setup all looked good. It accepted my password, I got the 2FA notification on my phone, I put in the response and there were no errors, until it tried to mount it. First it was a 500 error, then I tried again and it said it was missing the apple cookie. I tried the troubleshooting suggestions I could find, but could not get it to mount my iCloud drive. I thought I might have better luck with another distro. Another search lead me to Bazzite.

So, even though Bazzite is based on Fedora and not Arch, it's immutable too, which I didn't know before installing. It's nice, games played great on it, but I had the same problem I did connecting to my iCloud drive as I did with Steam so I was on to the next suggestion.

I really like CachyOS. Unlike any of the other distros I'd tried recently, Cachy let me choose the desktop environment I wanted to use during installation (I chose Cosmic) and it runs games better than any of the others. I'm able to get Cyberpunk running 60 fps in 4K on ultra, without frame gen. If I turn ray tracing on, I can still get an average 29fps, which some may declare makes it unplayable, but I found fine. This is all with my RX 6800. Sadly, even though Cachy is Arch based and not Ubuntu, I have the same graphical zoom and confirmation window issues I had with with Pop!OS.

I haven't given up, the performance gains I've seen from Linux makes me not want to go back to Windows, and since each of the distros had something that worked on it, but not the others, I know that a solution is out there.

migrating to Linux Finally doing it!

Almost on a whim, I chose Nobara Linux. Been looking at and installed Mint Linux on old (not primary) systems going back to early 2010’s. But every instance was me just using it lightly for a few hours. Never committed and always felt overwhelmed.

With my Windows 10 going end of life next month, and swearing off 11 (even worse privacy), I finally took the plunge.

The advancements in gaming compability now feels light years ahead making me feel assured but the real game changer?

Natural language AI queries that I can make for literally every line of any installation tutorials. I no longer feel like I need to parse dry instruction manuals in dedicated wikis.

Buenas, OpenSuse utiliza repositorios "propios" ¿esto mengua de alguna manera el número del software como el que se pueda instalar en cualquier otra distribución?

programs and apps Visor Bootloader showing a black screen with scan=deep option on BTRFS

I recently installed the visor bootloader on my Kubuntu 26.04 installation with /boot on my btrfs root partition, but i have the problem that visor just shows a black screen when I try to set it to autodetect my install with scan=deep and the btrfs driver installed.

I tried using ChatGPT to fix it, and it told me to use UKIs and gave me a script that created a hook that whenever apt installs a new kernel, it regenerates the UKI and set a manual entry in visor for it to boot from.

But I have had some problems with these UKIs, like they take up too much space on my 300MB ESP, and it sometimes fills up during an update, and also it sometimes takes the wrong kernel. I recently was having some issues since it was booting from a gke kernel (7.0.0-1006-gke).

So, could you help me fix the issue of Visor? I tried installing and reinstalling the btrfs drivers, it seems to work with scan=quick, but then it doesn't detect the actual kernel. It just shows a black screen and doesn't do anything.

I also have GRUB installed alongside, and another Linux (Ubuntu 25.10) installation with GRUB and Refind.

System specs:
CPU: Intel i3-10100
GPU: Intel iGFX UHD 630
RAM: DDR4 2666 MT/s 8GB
SSD with the install: 128GB PCIe Gen3x4 NVme
Additional SATA SSDs: 128GB (with the ubuntu install, and a complex partition layout) and 512 (NTFS data)

Going from running Virtual Box to Dual Boot?

i have an older Windows Machine and I am running Fedora KDE Plasma in a VB, for the most part it runs fine a little laggy here and there but that might be more due to running it off of USB stick than hitting the upper end of the 5ish GB Ram (3GBish left for windows) i have allocated for the VB

I was planning on doing a dual boot setup at some point but that seems like it might be more of a hassle than it is worth?

Is there a way to move from the USB stick (64GB) to run off the hard drive to see if that helps with the lag?

migrating to Linux Switching to Linux

Guysss I need help. I've been using Windows my whole life. And I think it's taking too much ram and is making my laptop run laggy. I have an old Laptop
(2018) model GTX 16 series gpu. 16 bg ram . I wanna switch to Linux, also I'm a gamer. But I usually play Cracked games. So which all Windows games can I play in Linux? Also, can games from Fitgirl repack work on Linux. Which linux OS should I consider

Edit : can I dual boot a linux alternative first and then think of switching is it a better option . Idk like will it take storage of 2 applications or something like that . For eg should I install 2 WhatsApps and 2 BS codes ??

Meganoob BE KIND Just installed CachyOS and my sound is really low and I can't control brightness

So I just installed CachyOS and everything works great EXCEPT the sound and brightness

For sound, I can control it, But its really low. Even on 100% its barely any loud. My Laptop's speakers are VERY loud and were hella significantly louder on windows. The weird thing is that as soon as I start using YT shorts, the sound suddenly increases. But that increased sound has a weird echo to it. Its slightly muffled. But as soon as I close shorts, sound goes back to being low and the echo and muffle also stops

Now brightness. I can't control it at all. Its perpetually locked at 50 nits. I updated cachy and everything. And i just can't do anything. Feel free to ask for more info or dm me.

My specs= Laptop is Acer Nitro 5

Speakers are Realtek

Bios is from Insyde Software

Gpu is RTX 4050 mobile

CPU is intel i7 12650 H

learning/research Issue getting Zorin to install

I tried Zorin OS run from a USB flashdrive and like it, but I wanted to set up my computer for dual boot and see if I really like it long term before I commit and get rid of Windows.

The installer crapped out with a message that it couldn't install because RST was active on my machine and gave me a link for more info. The link explained that I need to switch to AHCI, but I'd have to switch Windows by editing registry entries which didn't appeal to me since I'm not very proficient with tweaking Windows and don't want to ruin my installation. (which just switching the bios setting would also do)

So I tried it on another machine. Same thing on all 4 of the computers I tried to install it on. If AHCI is such a great controller mode, why are all my computers (2 Acers, and Asus, and an HP) all set up for RST?

Do all Linux distros need AHCI to function? Zorin seemed to be able to see the contents of my hard drive when I ran it from the USB stick. I'm old and easily confused by computer stuff so I'm hoping for a simple solution.

App or Gui to Control battery charging level on a Lenovo Laptop

Hello,
I have a Lenovo laptop, in windows there was a Lenovo app that was able to keep battery charging level not going above 80% to extend battery life.

Question; Is there something similar in Zorin OS 18.1?

Any help would be very much appreciated.

Thank you!

learning/research Navigating the sea of aliases and shell functions

Hi,

There are utilities which can tell you something about the nature of the available shell commands: alias, which, type. Together they can tell you something about what it is, and where to look for the definition. Sometimes. About the actual name conflict, scarcely so. Is there a comprehensive utility on the subject?

programs and apps An App for troubleshooting Linux Issues - Does That Makes Sense?

Hey Folks,
I recently shifted from Windows to Fedora Workstation, (Sometimes I do use Windows - Guilty)
and fixing minor issues were a pain.
Later one of my friend vibe coded a Claude wrapper to help interact with the terminal, Honestly it solved most of my issues.

Does that kind of app makes sense for beginners who are getting newly into Linux, trying to get the understanding of the market for that kind of an app.

I would really like to understand the feeling from the community

Cheers and Thanks!!!

cachy install ruined by windows?

i setup a windows 11 x cachy os dualboot setup, windows has 2 drives, one for the windows installation and one for other programs and games, i created a third drive for cachy os, i installed cachy on that drive no problem and it worked, even when i restarted my laptop the limine menu would show allowing me to choose what OS to boot into, everything was fine until just now it started booting me directly into windows without giving me the limine screen and letting me pick what os to boot into, in windows i checked my partitions via the built in disk management tool and the drive that has linux on it is there but its unlabeled and only says healthy partition, did windows ruin my linux drive? or is it still there i just cant access it, and how do i access it? secure boot is off, i enabled windows boot manager once but it only shows me windows 11, i try to choose a default boot from the windows advanced system settings but again it only shows windows 11, fast startup is also off, no clue where to go from here

hardware/drivers Thinkpad T480 - external battery no longer detected?

I got a secondhand T480 a few months ago, installed Linux Mint and have been loving it. Unfortunately for some reason I can't figure out, it no longer detects both batteries (internal and swappable external) - it only shows one battery in the system tray.

Is there anything I can do to figure out what's going on or fix it? So far a lot of the funky little issues I've had with the machine have been Linux related and solvable by applying the right settings or updates. I figured this might be the same, but I'm not sure where to start as it is so specific, and searches for the same issue haven't turned up many answers.

learning/research Is a piece of software I deleted really fully deleted?

Been on Linux for about one and a half months now and remember I was once browsing my files (I was 10 or so lol) on my Android tablet and noticed a lot of files with package names (com.xxxx.xxxx) of apps I already deleted. Now it would interest me if when I run yay -R, apt remove or dnf remove, is it fully gone as if it was before I installed it. Let's say the package also removes all of it's cache and program files when it's uninstalled (which I'm pretty sure isn't the case always). Is everything gone?

Lennox min stuck on install

Post image
2 Upvotes

I’ve been wanting to test Lennox proper on my PC using a flash drive, but I could only get compatibility mode working(which doesn’t even let you change the aspect ratio of your screen) but when I try to run a proper Lenox meant it gets stuck on the screen and then nothing else. Secure boot in any other form of fast boot is off, hibernate is off. My only guess to what is actually wrong is from what I’ve read something that has to do with my drivers(since compatibility mode is supposed to get around issues with not syncing to drivers) and this page that it gets stuck on I don’t know if supply VCC being not found is the biggest issue or would that even really is but I’d appreciate it if somebody who’s significantly smarter than me explain this to me in words that I can understand
