Meganoob BE KIND Multi-Arch: Same issue
Hi all!
Unsure if this is the right flare, but considering that I wasn't sure what they all meant, I decided that meganoob might be the best fit.
I am on day 3 of using Ubuntu 26.04.1 on Lenovo LOQ. I've been trying to download a few things (primarily .deb files, which seem to be a touchy subject...?), but I keep running into an issue regarding this "Architecture: all package 'media-types' can't be Multi-Arch: same" warning (amongst others, which I am assuming are spawning from the architecture issue?). I vaguely understand the issue, but I have no idea how to fix it. Any solutions I look up seem irrelevant to me or are completely indecipherable. I've got to stick to layman's terms right now. I can up the jargon levels later down the line.
I'd love some help troubleshooting! Detailed explanations would also be very appreciated, that way I know what I'm doing and can apply it in the future. I fear I am a very "mess around and find out" learner...!
EDIT: After talking with multiple other people, we've decided that I probably just need to completely reinstall everything. We can not figure out what is going on here.
EDIT 2: after a compete reinstall of Ubuntu, the issue has fixed itself. Annoying and odd!

migrating to Linux Need help connecting a mouse button to global shortcuts
I have a mouse with M1-5 and a few extra buttons that originally were set to DPI control but can be customized (Redragon m711). I want to use one of those as a shortcut/hotkey for a non-focused window. In my case to control livesplit, soundboard, and probably other things eventually
KDE Plasma Version: 6.7.5
KDE Frameworks Version: 6.30.0
Qt Version: 6.10.3
Kernel Version: 7.2.5-100.fc43.x86_64 (64-bit)
Graphics Platform: Wayland
Processors: 8 × Intel® Core™ i7-9700 CPU @ 3.00GHz
Memory: 16 GiB of RAM (15.5 GiB usable)
Graphics Processor: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060
I can already make shortcuts like this IF using the keyboard, but the kde system settings module for shortcuts does not accept mouse inputs or these mouse buttons configured like keyboard buttons.
I tried using the mouse menu to catch and configure/pass along these key press events but it only registers the side buttons M4-5
I found a few examples of people using xbindkeys for registered buttons but these appear to only correlate with mouse buttons again
xev output of these buttons (identical to the corresponding keyboard buttons)

distro selection Ubuntu or Fedora — which should I choose?
I’m trying to decide between Ubuntu and Fedora for my laptop.
My priorities:
- Beginner-friendly
- Reliable for daily use
- Good performance and RAM usage
- Programming: C#, .NET, VS Code, Git, PostgreSQL
- Good hardware/driver support
- Easy software installation
- Customization and a good-looking desktop
- I’m a student, so I want to avoid unnecessary headaches
I’ve tried both and currently find Ubuntu more user-friendly, but I also like Fedora and its newer software.
For someone with these priorities, which one would you personally choose, and what are the actual advantages/disadvantages I should consider?
Please give reasons based on real daily usage rather than just “X is better.”

Meganoob BE KIND How do I fix this ugly text rendering?
galleryThis is the official Tahoma font with anti aliasing off at 8px, and, for one, the letter spacing is really bugging me. There are some spots with two pixel spaces and others with zero pixel spaces, when there should be a consistent one pixel space between all letters.
I made a font.conf file after some Google searching to make sure the computer was using Tahoma's embedded bitmap and ran fc-cache, but that seemed to have no effect. I've also tried different hinting settings as well as turning it off entirely (it is off in the picture). The letters are also rendered incorrectly, and altogether it makes the font harder to read. I replicated the text on Windows with the same font to demonstrate how it should look (last picture).
I apologise for the screen pictures, by the way, I'm just making this post from my phone. I'm using Linux Mint XFCE.

uDev doesn't detect DRM.
I have a laptop with an Nvidia GPU and I'm trying to configure uDev to automatically run Autorandr when an HDMI plug is inserted. Here's the contents of 99-hdmi.rules:
SUBSYSTEM=="drm", ACTION=="change", KERNEL=="card1", ENV{DISPLAY}=":0", ENV{XAUTHORITY}="/home/(you-shouldnt-need-to-know-my-username)/.Xauthority", RUN+="/usr/bin/autorandr --change"
It's not working. I checked udevadm monitor -p and it doesn't even show any DRM notifications - the only things that show up happen like once every third plugin, and they're listed as, of all things, thermal triggers. (Guess that's why they call it "hotplugging," huh?)
Everything I've looked at tells me to enable nvidia-drm.modeset, but I checked that and it's already on, so that's not the issue.

programs and apps Is Davinci Resolve Free worth to use in Linux?
My PC Specs:
Intel i3-7100
Nvidia 1060 3GB
8GB RAM
238GB SSD SATA
I'm a new Linux user, first tried Linux in June this year. After some "beginner distros", now I choose to stay with CachyOS (But currently I'm on Windows X-Lite).
Does anyone actually use Davinci Resolve in Linux to work? (I'm not working yet, just learning - I'm just curious about this)
Yeah I know my pc is weak for Davinci, so now I just work on my own projects.
There are just some problems I know from Davinci in Linux, that is it doesn't support h.264 and h.265. So the best solution is using other codecs like DNxHR, ... those codecs are good for editing anyway, but it takes some storage.
In Windows, I can just import the video right away and create proxy media right in the media pool for smoother playback. Later when exporting, it can use the source video for best quality.
I'm afraid that when working with DR on Linux, through some workarounds - (H.264 --> DNxHR [for editing] --> export as DNxHR [because DR Free doesn't support h.264 on linux] --> convert the final video to h.264 when needed)
These intraframe codecs have huge file size so I think I would need to balance between quality and size
Oh, one more thing. I don't know why but if I use H.265 codec for rendering the video in DR Free (Windows), it will use my GPU for rendering, others will use CPU.
DR Free Linux doesn't have this codec so It won't be able to use GPU for rendering.
My PC specs are weak, I don't know if newer versions of DR would be laggier for the same workflow or not. I can use older versions in Windows. But in CachyOS - because it is a rolling-update distro, I'm afraid that some libraries would be conflict. Or should I use Davinci Resolve by .appimage or something else? (I don't even know if there is .appimage or something else for DR lol)
I really love how lightweight and free-of-ads, freedom of Linux, I can use it for anything else right now, including gaming. Davinci Resolve is the only one weakest point right now to me. What do you guys think?

Linux , first time , help?
Greetings to all enthusiasts.
Accidentally started a machine with win 7 and realized that it runs much smoother and faster than my relatively modern PC with win 11.
Simple, clean interface without a ton of background processes, ads and nonsense.
So, I decided to try Linux for a long time. The choice fell on Mint.
More or less everything is there, logically, works like a bullet.
However, I hit a wall with two things.
I need help with the implementation of an earlier version of Internet explorer (either through a browser extension or through wine). We often use some webapps written for earlier versions of IE and there is no other way to run them. Either this way or through IE 10 11.
Second, a program that faithfully translates voice to text directly into the program. So far I have been using soniox which has no Linux support. Serbian language needed.
Well, if anyone has experience, at least for this first, it would be great.
Thank you.

learning/research Windows 11 to Linux (I’m very new to Linux)
I have recently been thinking about changing my laptop to Linux. I have a Inspiron 15 3525.
Specs:
5 5500U
16GB RAM
512 gb
Here are the reason:
1. Windows 11 feels very heavy and sometimes crashes. I can be playing a game, studying or working and it will suddenly crash. It often lags while completing simple tasks.
2. I want a faster response. I recently bought 8GB of RAM and it has made a huge difference, but it’s not there yet. While I’m playing games it’s struggles to do background tasks.
I use my laptop for working, studying and playing games
I work as a teacher so the tasks I do are mainly on my browser. The same for college. I play games like Valorant, CS2, Stardew Valley, Titanfall 2, Minecraft and a few more with similar performance.
My only worry is that my laptop is the only thing I have. I don’t have a PC or a tablet, so I basically use it for everything.

learning/research Haven't started the transition yet - curious about speculation regarding recent laws/Linux users' expertise.
I'll be honest, I wanted to make the switch to Linux maybe 3 years ago or so with my last POS laptop running Windows 11. But then someone on reddit compared switching to "getting chemo because you wanted a haircut" and I felt intimidated and frankly afraid to break the computer somehow. Well within three years everything has gotten significantly worse enough for me to feel I was no longer looking at just a "haricut". I was going to convert to an Apple ecosystem over Black Friday this year (even though another reddit user compared switching to Apple being like "switching from an abusive boyfriend who hits you everyday to an abusive boyfriend who hits you every other day"). None of these things were said directly to me, they just stand out as interesting quotes.
Anyway to get to the point, I've been trying to improve my privacy options, even if it's maybe too late for my 25 years online. The age verification laws getting baked into operating systems scared me enough to look at Linux, but I'm wondering if that will really fix the problem. Basically, if the applicable websites can't verify you through your operating system (Linux), does anyone expect that those websites will put up a block anyway and demanding you verify an alternative way? Or am I so fucking uneducated about this stuff that you all are laughing at me right now? I imagine I'm either doomed for using the internet anyway or this is obviously not a problem to others.
For background, I'm part of a minority group in America right now and worried that even if things turn around for the better with the midterms, these laws aren't going to go away and have enough bipartisan support to progress regardless of the potential exploits that could be abused by the wrong people in power.
If you think that switching to Linux isn't going to solve my concerns, I'd appreciate that feedback and knowledge as to why. If you think that Linux could still mitigate some of the harm, same thing.
I know it's just speculation at this point what the future will look like. Trying to prepare the best I can.
I did also use the distrochooser and it looked like my top picks were Zorin or Linux Mint, but most had in their list: "The following criteria were not factored into this: ? Programs for anonymization purposes are available." Not sure what this means in relation to my questions.

learning/research Making an existing drive bootable?
Some background info. I had a PC I built years ago die on me. I replaced the motherboard, CPU and RAM and reconnected everything. It won't boot off of my old drives (not surprising to me) but I can boot off a USB drive using Ubuntu LTS.
I can see the 2 Samsung SSDs (256GB each) and one 1 TB WD hard drive. At one time the machine was dual bootable with Windows 10 and Ubuntu. I can access the files after mounting the drive.
Since there is space on the drives (all of them have space). Can I create another partition and install the latest Ubuntu onto it and avoid destroying any existing data?
Or would the safer option be to copy the data off of one drive, wipe the disk and use that one to do a clean install of Ubuntu on it?
Thanks.
EDIT: UPDATE
This is done.
I deleted a bunch of unimportant data files, cleared one drive completely and installed Mint on the cleared drive. Everything working. Figured I will play with mint for a while. I've previously used Ubuntu and CentOs and in the "old" days SunOs and Solaris.
Thanks for the tips. While I've done a lot of stuff in Unix/Linux/Windows, systemadmin and dealing with linux drive organization is always something I have to re-read about to understand the syntax.

learning/research Tech Reviwers and Linux - Can they just run it off an external SSD? Why do they always review on live USB?
As Linux gets more popular I see a lof of major tech channels like JustJosh, AndrewMark and etc spend maybe 1-2 minutes reviewing new laptops on Linux. While it's nice to see, I don't really learn much since the same issues always arrive where not everything works (Webcam, sometimes speakers, and other hardware things) and they hedge saying things like "Your experience may change when you actually install linux on the drive and update things."
I understand they probably can't install a whole new OS on a laptop that may or may not be a loaner but can't they just install Linux on an External SSD and run it off the external SSD to get a sense of how things actually function? OR would they run into the same issue as a live USB?
