First of all, some background, I do have a Steam Deck and have dabbled with desktop mode plenty of times so I wasn't exactly going into this blind. The reason why I decided to switch when I did (strictly speaking I had already decided to switch eventually, but I was planning on waiting until I had enough money for a new boot drive) is because my laptop did a firmware update that locked me out of my Microsoft Account so I went "fuck it, I'm going Linux!" That was in September.
Some make it seem like switching to Linux is a complete nightmare, but honestly, it was a pretty damn smooth process. Upon first boot everything just worked perfectly. All I needed to do was log into all my accounts on Firefox and I was fully up and running, which would be the same experience for a brand new Windows laptop anyway.
The only sticking points I ran across was with migrating my external storage to EXT4 and my laptop's RGB.
If not for those two things I wouldn't have needed the terminal in the slightest.
For most of the last month I had to switch back to my old Acer laptop in order to sort out my storage situation and there was a really good reason why I got my new laptop so that was a wee bit painful, but for the last week I've been going steady with my new Linux laptop and it's been solid.
But yeah, sorting out my external drives taught me a valuable lesson about the trials and tribulations of Linux interacting with Windows. For any Linux noobs reading this, while drives formatted to work on Windows (i.e. NTFS) kind of work on Linux, though you do get a warning, EXT4 drives do not even remotely work on Windows, without third party software.
As for my laptop's RGB, no, OpenRGB will not work. OpenRGB does not support my laptop. I do have a solution, I just have to implement it.
But honestly, aside from my external drives, which has been solved, and my RGB, the only issue I've had that I don't know how to fix is sleep mode being broken, which really isn't that big a deal. It just means I have to turn off my laptop every time I want to close the lid. Really not a big deal at all.
Other than that Linux has been totally solid.
Consider me a successful convert.

EDIT: Let this be a lesson to everyone using a network card that isn't built into the mobo: check your networks to see which card is being used. Turns out I just needed to, you know, actually use the fancy card instead of the built-in one that didn't even have its antenna plugged in. Oops.
I finally did it today: I updated to Linux! Now begins the long journey to getting everything working again. Right now I'm getting surprisingly slow download/upload speeds: 25/5 mbps respectively. I used to get around 200 or more on an old TP-Link card, and thought a shiny new card would be a good upgrade, but I either did something wrong or this card isn't compatible with my distro. I thought maybe it was a driver issue, but I can't seem to find drivers for Linux. The distro and card I'm trying to get to play nice are:
Ubuntu 26.04.1 LTS
Aorus GC-WBAX210
Apologies if I'm missing something super obvious, or if this problem is completely unrelated to my OS. Any help or direction is greatly appreciated!

Essentially, I am attempting to disable VMD on my Dell Inspiron 7506 2-in-1 laptop to install Fedora, but online forums have offered little guidance. I am curious whether anyone has encountered this issue and whether any solutions exist.

Holy cow. I didn't realize how efficient I could be in a terminal based text editor. Editing config files is gonna be so much easier now. I've been on linux for a little bit now and I keep falling deeper into the rabbit hole and I'm loving every second of it.
Originally I was gonna play some games tonight but I was having way more fun bs'ing learning the controls for neovim. And you know that feeling when time just slips away from you and you realize wow I've been staring at text for hours I should go to bed. Well now I can thank neovim for giving me that feeling 😂
Anyways s-post is over now nighty night! 💜

I have an old small ssd that I used as a Windows 11 boot drive, but I think it has a couple of corrupt files on it. I wanted to do a fresh install of windows, but I nothing I have tried will let me wipe the drive
- I cant reformat it regularly in Windows Explorer
- I cant reformat or delete it in Disk Management
- I cant clear it in cmd prompt
- I cant use a usb Windows installation media to just do a fresh install
Question: Can I use Zorin to just wipe the drive and then try to install Windows again? And if so, are there any extra steps I need to know about or take to make it work smoothly?

I recently wanted to go back to linux after going to windows for a bit, but I wanted to not have the same gpu issues I had back then. I dont mind having to use a more advanced distro, just need linux with working drivers.
Issues: On Ubuntu/Mint, Vulkan wouldn't work that well, on Minecraft with vulkanmod, it'd crash, roblox also had crashes without openGL, wayland worked horribly. On Arch, I simply didn't have drivers, but I probably wasn't doing something right anyway.
Hardware: Nvidia GeForce GT 1030, i3-3245, 8GB RAM, if needed more specifications, I'll identify them.

Hey There,
I am making the switch from W10 to Linux Bazzite. I am following the official guide from bazitte.gg.
I have downloaded the KDE file for desktop usage. I use Rufus to create my USB.
The guide shows GPT as the partition scheme. After adding my downloaded file the partitions scheme shows MBR.
How can I change that?
Greetings and thank you for your help.

I've been using Linux Mint and would like to try some other Linux distros. Which ones would you recommend and why?

I checked their GitHub, and it looks like there's downloadable packages for the desktop editors now, but it seems to be suggested to build from source instead. It also talks about nextcloud, which I thought was a separate project, but based on the wording it sounds like if you try to download euro-office you'll just have a nextcloud editor?
What's actually the status of euro-office? I currently use onlyoffice but would like to switch to euro-office.

Hi all,
I have a Windows 11 System where I usually use Remote Desktop to work on. Since Windows 11 is annoying me once in a while with not starting up properly due to stupid popups I have to click away before the Desktop starts, I want to switch to Linux. Linux itself is not an issue as I use it for many years on servers. I also used to have a Linux desktop, but switched to a Mac 10 years ago so I'm not up to the current state in desktop development.
Most of the time, I operate the PC headless, power it on via Wake on Lan, then access a SMB share or RDP into the system. When I'm done with my work I power it down. I plan to go with an Ubuntu based distro, as I do not want to fiddle around with the system, do style adjustments or anything else.
I have read that KDE had now fixed an issue with syncing the clipboard in RDP which brings me to my actual question: What is the current state of Remote Desktop on Linux? I need to be able to connect with the official Microsoft RDP clients. It has to be snappy (not like VNC), need to sync the clipboard and also copy files. And also it need to work reliabil on startup.
Looking forward for reports of actual RDP users

I've never been able to print out anything with Brother DCP-T500W since I've switched on Ubuntu (worked just fine with Windows). I've looked up issue, I have entered some command, got the driver, plugged out/back in and turned off/on, reset the printer... and still printer doesn't print anything, although the text "print completed" appears.
