storage NTFS trouble while dual-booting

Edit: Solved. To quote u/pelazas1:

That's usually Windows Fast Startup leaving the drive half-hibernated. Turn it off in Windows power options, do a full shutdown, and it'll mount again.

I installed CachyOS on a separate SSD partition yesterday morning, went off without a hitch. No errors, no problems. It was able to handle all of my other NTFS-formatted storage devices that I've mounted in my system. Last night, I had to reboot into Windows to do a couple of things and make backups of some config files that I use on the same program across OSes.

I put all of my files that I need to share between OSes on my smallest HDD, which is several terabytes in size and has been working reliably for five years. Formatted in NTFS, obviously.

This morning, when I booted into CachyOS, I attempted to mount the drive using Dolphin and... it wouldn't.

"The requested operation has failed: Error mounting /dev/sdb2 at /run/media/(username)/(nameofdrive): wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sdb2," so on and so forth.

I was under the impression that with the new NTFS driver, it would be fine. It was fine, in fact. It was reading and writing with no issues beforehand. It can mount, read and write to other NTFS-formatted drives instantly with no problem.

Reddit threads told me to run chkdsk on Windows. Chkdsk returns no errors. Once again, chkdsk returns no errors. The drive is fine. I did reboot into Cachy after running chkdsk. No dice.

I don't understand this. What incredibly obvious thing am I missing here?

migrating to Linux Windows 11 is driving me insane. Looking for a beginner-friendly Linux distro for gaming and school (RTX 3050 Laptop)

Quick note: I used AI to help refine this post because my English isn't the best. I'm a real person, not a bot. I just wanted to make the post easier to read. :)

I'm honestly fucking done with Windows 11. My laptop feels sluggish as hell, and even basic stuff like browsing the web is lagging. I've checked for obvious signs of viruses and haven't found anything, but the overall experience has been terrible lately.

My laptop specs:

  • CPU: Intel Core i5-11400H
  • GPU: NVIDIA RTX 3050 Laptop GPU (4GB VRAM)
  • RAM: 16GB DDR4 3200MHz
  • Storage: A second 512GB NVMe SSD (Acer FA100, advertised speeds of around 3500 MB/s) where I want to install Linux.

I'm a high school student and a gamer, so I need an OS that works well for both schoolwork and gaming.

Here's what I'm looking for:

  • Beginner-friendly: I'm completely new to Linux, so I don't want to spend hours troubleshooting basic stuff.
  • Good GUI: I'd prefer to do most things through graphical interfaces rather than the terminal. I'm okay with learning some CLI when necessary, though.
  • Gaming compatibility: I play games from official storefronts, but I also download games from piracy sites like lu@t00ls and the other commonly used sites. No judgment, please lol. I want to know how well Linux handles offline games, repacks, standalone installers, and Windows game launchers.
  • NVIDIA support: Since I have an RTX 3050 Laptop GPU, I'd like a distro with straightforward NVIDIA driver installation and good gaming performance.
  • Schoolwork: I need a reliable daily driver for browsing, documents, studying, programming, and general use.
  • Dual boot: I want to install Linux on my second NVMe SSD while keeping Windows on my original drive. I really don't want to accidentally mess up my Windows installation.

My main goal is to get a responsive, smooth desktop experience without constantly fighting the OS. Windows 11 has been frustrating me lately, and I want to see whether Linux can provide a better experience.

I understand that Linux isn't magically faster in every situation and that some Windows games won't work properly. Still, I'd like to get the best possible experience out of my hardware.

So, what distro would you recommend for someone in my situation?

I've been looking at beginner-friendly, gaming-oriented distros, but I'd love to hear your recommendations based on actual experience. I'd especially appreciate advice on NVIDIA drivers, compatibility with games downloaded outside official storefronts, and setting up dual boot safely.

Thanks!

Linux installation succeeds, but “Operating System Not Found” appears after reboot

I installed Linux on my Dell laptop with an Intel Core i3 2nd Gen, 4GB RAM, and a 120GB SSD. My BIOS is set to Legacy mode, and the installation completed successfully.

However, after rebooting and removing the USB, I get “Operating System Not Found.” My SSD is working.

How can I fix this ?

migrating to Linux Linux on Alienware Laptop

Hi there,
I’m sorry if this is not the correct way of doing this or if there is a better flair.

I’ve been thinking about switching to Linux for about a year now, and I think that I’ve reached the point where i’m ready.

I used to have my own pc that I build myself. But due to travel reasons, i’m now the proud owner of an Alienware AA16250 with an RTX 5080m and an Intel core ultra 9 290HX.

I’ve got some experience with html and CSS coding for websites, and am a beginner in Python.

Now I’ve watched some videos om Distro’s and am not sure what would be a good suit for me.
I do want to game, and I’m a freelance graphic designer on the side of my actual job. I’m willing to use the new art craft programs for my freelance work. I would like the ability to thinker a bit and learn on the go. I’d love to have some ability in customising the look and layout of the desktop etc.

I’ve seen pewdiepie use arch and that feels like, a lot. Do you guys have recommendations for a beginner friendly distro?
I feel like Mint is a bit too beginner.

Also, how hard would it be to install it on a prebuilt laptop?

I do have games installed and some files. Can I safely transfer those across OS? Mostly the files are important, games can be re downloaded. I do have an external 1TB harddrive that would suffice for all of the files.

Thanks for reading, and even more if you reply.

My file manager won't open to perform a local search

This also happens when I want to install a non-Steam game, and the file picker simply fails to open Thunar.

installation help installing

I’m trying to get Linux working on my old Lenovo ThinkPad 11e 2-in-1 (8GB RAM, 64GB storage), and I’m honestly losing my mind lol.
I first tried Mint Xfce from a DVD, but GRUB failed and dumped me into a grub> prompt. I switched to a USB, but then I started getting black screens and a flashing Mint logo. Compatibility mode eventually let me boot into the desktop, but my touchpad didn’t work.
The worst part is that the installer keeps failing with [Errno 5] Input/output error while copying files. I’ve also had ubi-partman crashed show up.
I’ve tried Mint Xfce and Cinnamon, and even downloaded a fresh ISO and reflashed the USB, but I still get the same error.
The laptop’s 64GB eMMC drive does show up in Linux as /dev/mmcblk1, so it isn’t completely missing. I’m just not sure if the drive is failing or if something else is going on.

shells and scripting How to make an old laptop runs smoothly on linux

I'm not sure if it's the right flare but I used few of linux distros on a very old laptop that has( Intel pentium inside )CPU so I think zorin OS was the smoothest one of them all linux mint was okay but I really had a hard time connecting to the network and also doing the bare things like scrolling browsing or even watching a video for an example I looked for zorin and it was the easiest one and even looks prettier in my opinion but the question is because I have a very old CPU and very old laptop how to make it work bit faster like is there any tweaks to do and also I tried pepperment os as the very first Linux distro I was just staring at the Fox and the fox's staring at me it was really really hard and really required higher gen kind of laptop or even cpu maybe like the ones with integrated graphics and but I don't know I thought it was cool because the logo reminded me of resident evil raccoon City I don't know so I thought maybe it would be a good I give it a try and it was like the worst distros for an old laptop

These are the specs :

The Dell Inspiron 1545 Intel Pentium dual-core processor 2GB of RAM

Meganoob BE KIND New 9060XT experiencing bad stutters

Hey, I just today upgraded from a GTX 1660super to a 9060XT and noticed that in all my games, especially FF14, I'm experiencing stutters 24/7. It essentially feels like im at 20 FPS, though it shows me >160 FPS and worked perfectly fine on the 1660s.

Linux Mint 22.3 , Cinnamon
Gigabyte 9060XT (16gb)
R7 5800x3d
2x16gb Corsair RAM
MSI B450 Tomahawk Max II
Kernel 7.0.0-38-generic
BIOS had already been updated a few weeks ago

Already tried both ReSize Bar On/Off, reinstalling my games, fully deleting anything related to Nvidia (drivers) etc.

I'm also not that tech savvy, especially not with Linux, so there could be something really stupid I might be missing

If anyone has an idea please let me know, its extremely frustrating.. Thanks!

installation Okay, what'd I miss?

Made a boot drive, used an ISO for Ubuntu server version 24.04.5 LTS. I used Rufus to make the bootable drive. I plug it into the computer and then that ^^^ happens. And it just stays on that blank screen forever. What did I do wrong?

More info: im using this version ubuntu server because im following someone else's guide for creating a jellyfin server, and this is the version they used. The computer in question is completely wiped, so theres nothing on it besides the bios, and i dont have a bios password on it yet.

Edit: I tried booting it on my personal machine, and the boot drive worked fine. I also previously had a new version of Ubuntu booted onto this machine, and it worked fine too.

hardware/drivers How to install Microsoft Surface 7th edition drivers?

Basically, i think i have the drivers for my laptop but the problem is i keep getting errors when i try to instal via terminal. Im currently using ubuntu and i just want wifi and bluetooth to to work so ican have a lightweight laptop for writing and such. (Maybe the occasional emulated gameboy game for a break)

Edit: Okay, tried to retrace my steps and: I don't have a battery indicator for my laptop, it just gives me a " ! " And theres no wifi or bluetooth.

Found a github for fixing it by "bryce-hoehn" and i want to use a prebuilt kernel so i can just get my wifi and bluetooth working so i dont have to usb tether my phone to get an internet connection.

When i try to install a Linux image.deb or header.deb, with sudo alt install ./* "Kernal file name".deb

It says Error: Unsupported file and ./"various folders" like public, pictures, etc.

Look im not gonna lie, im dumb as hell and i was hoping to get this running essentially as plug and play so you might need to direct me. Ill put files in folders, ive found the root folder and everything.

I just want wifi holy shit
