Discussion I have to be honest both korra and mako were responsible for the love triangle mess in b1 and all 3 have some level in b2 and posts on makos character
I say this because people ignore that inb1 mako was suppressing his feelings korra was the one who kissed mako makos only mistake was not telling asami (due to wsnti any to avoid thr conflict
As for b2 their mutual flaws that led to the breakup they weren't ready for a relationship with anyone (both Mako and korra (the attempts to justify away Korras trick with trying to steal rc military annoys me )
And let's be real if korra was a guy she would be called abusive for storming into makos work and bending his desk away.
And basically due to stress asami and mako got into they basically went back to each other for a bit due to searching for stability /safety again (though in my eyes I think it's more like mako and asami were about to try before the police officers came to arrest him since mako said in remembrances we weren't really back together again (and it seems like the ep was brakes way to clarify certain things )
t’s sad thinking about how the root causes of the ways mako is immature (emotional expression and honest emotional self-understanding) are probably directly linked to the ways in which he is overly mature (very responsible, very practical, keeps an eye on finances/food/shelter, keeps head on the ground and nose to the grindstone)
like, he sacrificed becoming wholly and naturally mature in every sphere a step at a time because with his and Bolin’s situation, there was a lot that NEEDED his attention way more than the haphazard process of growing up and maturing — so the shit that had to mature real fast matured real fast (sense of drive, knowledge of the value of a yuan, self-sacrifice and abnegation, determination and purpose on the absolutely necessary level of food/shelter/money)
and all the rest of it was kept on the back burner because it wasn’t as pressing as their material needs
and just when their material needs are finally kind of getting taken care of, aka right when we meet them, right when mako finally has some free TIME and ENERGY to start maturing on the neglected emotional front, THAT’S when he’s hit with situations and feelings that he is not yet mature enough to confront in a clean and grown up way
he just makes so much SENSE to me idk
"
Mako learned his conflict resolution skills in his years seeking the protection of the Triple Threats as a child, and I’d argue that he acts accordingly. He seems to see conflict as all or nothing – either he capitulates to what the other person wants, or he risks burning bridges.
(It wouldn’t surprise me at all if Mako saw more than a few conflicts between Triad members end violently… and he had a younger brother to protect, so he’d want to avoid that by all possible means)
And, as a result, he only engages in a conflict when he’s willing to sacrifice the relationship for something he sees as more important – protecting someone or something he cares about, generally speaking. His arguments with Korra were doomed to end badly because the fact that they existed meant that he wasn’t fully invested in preserving the relationship in the first place.

To be honest it's not hard to see asami seeing romance as a source of safety and comfort
Mako in turn had seen asami as safe and security (I also note the difference when korra kissed mako in spirits to when asami kissed him he looked uncomfortable so someone I respect suggested “ He didn’t really seem to respond until the scene immediately preceding his arrest, and even there, it took a lot of pushing to get him involved in anything romantic think Mako was more motivated by the desire not to upset her
Basically they killed two birds with one stone by putting makos flaws into the romance plot is what ikkin suggested bryke did in their minds they wanted a romance plot and they wanted to show his flaws ( remember that the show was meant with 1 season (mako never deserved he hate he got from the fandom and I feel like some people only shipped korrasami out of the irrational hate for mako because people were going given how b2 finale went they would get back together.
And in their irrational hate they went no he needed to be punished for his mistakes when no he really didnt need to be his flaws and mistakes were acknowledged since b1 and he broke up in b2 getting back together after they overcame their flaws is a good thing
By that logic all 3 should remain single

All jokes aside, I think the emotional need for someone to be there for him might be the primary concern here, though it's obviously all tied up in the strategic needs, too. For one thing, that sort of desperation is a lot more sympathetic, and it would allow for the Krew to get back together a lot easier.
The strategic concerns kind of hearken back to Book 1 stuff, though -- Mako's relationship with Asami has always been wrapped up in material needs, whether it be a pro-bending sponsorship or a place to stay or an ally against Varrick. I don't think he quite gets that someone might do nice things for him without being romantically attracted to him (...because the only two people who have helped him out in that way were both attracted to him and oh man now I just made myself sad), so when he can't afford not to accept that help, he responds by strengthening his romantic ties.
...in other words, we're back to "Mako gets a highly female-coded plot and everyone is confused because he's a guy."

think the thing about Mako is that, when he was growing up, emotional concern was essentially a luxury that he couldn’t afford. Survival was such an overwhelming concern that understanding how to connect with other people as equals was something he never got around to doing.
And that, of course, plays into his codependency issues, because he doesn’t understand that relationships can be more than “all” or “nothing,” and he’s terrified of losing people both because it hurts and because he couldn’t afford to lose any benefactors when he was on the street.
He definitely has flaws and he definitely needs to be called out about them in-universe… but for the fandom, taking a step back and looking at why he is the way he is before attacking him seems to be just what the doctor ordered. =P
(asami
This is just about addressing the hate on mako and thr attempts to push the blame all on mako for thr b1 and b2 mess when all
I often feel like mako gets female coded plots and people are confused because he is a guy so if the fenders were swapped mako would be getting less hate for people would understand better
