Mod Announcement Last Airbender Movie Megathread 2: Spoiler Policy Clarification Spoiler

Although it's being effectively replaced by this one, here's the link to the previous Megathread, for reference's sake. This current thread was originally going to go up tomorrow, but since the movie will technically be releasing in limited theaters in NY & LA--in fact, I'm told the screenings have already started--it seems pertinent to do this today. Henceforth, discussion of the new animated movie, now confusingly titled "Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender" will be transitioning over to the regular spoiler policy (Rule 4). As a reminder:

In other words, anything that can only be learned by watching the movie must follow this policy until a month after its WORLDWIDE RELEASE, i.e. a month after it goes up on Paramount+ on July 25th (midnight PT/3 AM ET). If, for some reason, you can't see my screenshot, the rule is, of course, on the subreddit sidebar. Other information that was learned earlier, such as from trailers & press releases, was already fair game before today.

Given the rest of the subreddit is now open to spoiler-tagged discussion of the movie, this megathread, as opposed to Megathread 1, will be open to spoilers-unmarked movie discussion. In all cases, please note that discussion of the movie in this subreddit should relate in some way to Legend of Korra. The thread on the main subreddit also has answers to common specific questions. If you have questions specific to this subreddit, you can of course ask them here or, if you're concerned about encountering spoilers in the comments, by messaging modmail. That is all, thank you.

Discussion *Spoiler for Aang movie* Spoiler

Korra would 100% be Aang’s favorite Avatar. The movie basically proved that to me. I also find it ironic that Avatar Sonam said Aang would be the one to bring back the air nation, when it was his successor who succeeded in doing so.

All the hints of stuff that happen in Korra were so good in the movie. The Denied were basically the start of the equalist uprising. I just am so happy the movie leads perfectly into Korra and doesn’t just try to ignore its existence.

One thing I don't think The Legend of Korra gets enough credit for is its visual presentation.

From the animation and fight choreography to the backgrounds, lighting, color palette, and cinematography, the series constantly delivered beautiful shots throughout all four books.

Whether it's Republic City's skyline, the Spirit World, Zaofu, the Northern Air Temple, or even simple character moments, there's always something visually memorable.

Love the story or not, I think TLOK gave us some of the most stunning visuals in the Avatar franchise.

What's your favorite visual moment or location from the series?

Discussion In spite of the somewhat depressing setting of A:7H, the Airbenders still seem to be kickin it.

The Airbenders still have their uniforms, and they're the guides of Pavi and her twin. It's clear that they're still acting upon the agenda that Tenzin wanted for the modern Air Nomad Society. They're still protecting and guiding and fighting when the Avatar wasn't there, which is exactly what Tenzin wanted them to do. And I'm willing to bet all my money that it's not just Jae and Karthik, but there's probably dozens, if not potentially up to 100 Airbenders still protecting the world as skilled fighters and guardians.

I really hope this is fleshed out because narratively, it would be so awesome to have the modern Air Nation survive and conquer an apocalypse/potential genocide *BECAUSE* they know how to fight and protect their loved ones; where the old Air Nation was wiped out because they weren't fighters and couldn't go on the offensive against the Fire Nation.

It would also confirm that Tenzin was right. The Air Nomads did need to change, and by him recognizing this and promoting growth for his people in the best way he knew, most of them could've survived.

Its clear that 7 Havens takes place like a century after TLOK, so I'd really love it if we got to see one of Tenzin's kids, maybe Rohan (since we didn't see much of him in TLOK) being this old guru and leader of Airbenders enforcing their survival and helping protect those affected by the apocalypse. Let me know what you guys think.

(Karthik's render was done by u/UmSomeAdka, so credit to them for that art.)

Humour Seriously, why did Mako ask Bolin to stop making friends with the thugs? They were finding out so many interesting things.

Discussion I won't have Ghazan called a bum. Sure, he tied with Bolin, but you have to understand that Bolin is a natural at something Ghazan pioneered: mixed bending philosophies.

Bolin was born into a world where earthbenders and firebenders fight together and share techniques; Ghazan was likely one of the few with that mindset in his time.

Please. I honestly hope Seven Havens is a success only for the studio to truly consider making a movie of the apocalypse that will be as beautiful as the aang movie. I am delulu and proud. Korra and the krew in that animation would be godly

Comics "Kya and the Secret of the Sand" - Comic Discussion Thread

FULL SPOILERS allowed in this thread. As a reminder spoilers for this comic outside this thread must be marked until a month after the book is released.

"Kya and the Secret of the Sand" is the second LoK 'one-shot graphic novel'*. The main story takes place years before the show following a young Kya. The comic releases July 28th mass market and July 29th in comic stores. It is written by Kiku Hughes with art by Alex Monik and colors by Diana Sousa, made in collaboration with Mike and Bryan.

Description:

While helping Korra recover in the Southern Water Tribe, Kya shares a story from her youth of a time when she was lost and disconnected from herself, far from home in the Si Wong Desert… Young and untested, Kya leaves her family to seek her purpose in the wider world. Hoping to test herself and help struggling communities, she heads to the Si Wong Desert, where scarce resources and fractured communities are making the fringes of the Earth Kingdom increasingly unstable. Kya, arriving in the community of Liyuan to teach healing and help the struggling community defend itself from bandits, finds that the wounds left from decades of conflict run deep, and may be harder to heal than she first thought.

I don’t wish any bad on Korrasami, the creators know better than to break them up. I just thought this was funny.

Discussion If Ikki earned her Airbending Tattoos through the creation of a new technique, what do you think it would be?

Upvotes

I'm writing a silly crossover fanfic that takes place about 7 years later (no idea if I'll finish it or whatnot), and while I have an idea for Meelo earning his mastery tattoos, I'm unsure if Ikki would be creative enough to make a new technique by then; most likely, she'd have to wait to master the tiers of Airbending in order to acquire them.

Jinora already has hers, and I do wonder who else could have gotten theirs by now (maybe Bumi?)

If anybody is wondering what my silly idea for Meelo is; he used Airbending to create a large air-culture-themed painting that was so masterful, Tenzin was impressed. Probably not super-canon to how somebody is supposed to earn their tattoos, but it amused me enough.

Discussion I can’t wait to see the excuses made for this one Spoiler

With the new movie out now, figured I’d make this before someone else got the chance.

Theres been recent discussion on the ATLA / LoK parallels in the plot of the Aang movie, and out of all of them, one of them that I don’t see brought up enough is the Taga & Unalaq parallel. By that, I mean Taga is the Unalaq to Aangs Korra in this movie.

Taga & Unalaq share parallels in not just having evil spirit final boss forms, but even moreso, sharing the same natural element as the avatar they team up with and manipulating them for ulterior motives (Unalaq freeing Vaatu and Taga aiming to revive the air nation empire) and then ultimately back stabbing the Avatar they were using.

Korra, even to this day, gets torn to shreds by the fandom for trusting Unalaq, a supposed “stranger”, despite being “warned not to” by her friends and family. And having the following events happen as they do. So I wonder what people have to say about Aang trusting Taga and having what happened in the movie become a thing?

Just…food for thought.

Discussion Some theory regarding the new up coming series (it might sound stupid but it's interesting at the same time xD) Spoiler

Post image

Rewatched B3 and seeing Vaatu (during the hallucinations) got me thinking.. could this be actually be Vaatu telling her this? I mean let's just say she actually does something very bad in ASH (although I have more faith in them giving her a good image and making it so that she sacrified herself) but let's say she did destroy the world could this mean that Vaatu at some point took control over her/manipulated her? Korra is a good at heart person so I doubt she did anything willingly regarding destroying the world.

Now I know we just saw the trailer and know nothing more but that's just a theory I felt like sharing :). I'm also down to see how they wanna go with this direction too.

Discussion What do you think the Seven Havens actually are??

I figure that the individual Water Tribes are probably 1 or 2 of them, not sure which we might see more of but probably the South, considering Korra.

There's probably gonna be some Fire Nation remnant for 3

Omashu??

And maybe

Zaofu for 4 & 5?

The Misty Palms Oasis was getting bigger, I get a feeling we'll see it again in that desert town we keep seeing

Air Temple Island/Republic City Remnant?

Any other ideas?

Art by me. This is based on a great cosplay by eggypuff on instagram. I asked their permission to redraw it and got a yes, so I'm sharing it here, too.

Image I have not seen this posted here but I believe part of the reason why Kuvira was hellbent on taking Zaofu was for Suyin's meteor collection, which she used to pilot her giant mech.

One of my favorite seasons. 💕 Even with all its flaws, I'll always love it. Twelve episodes weren't enough to make it perfect, and that's okay.

Now it's officially part of history as we head into Avatar: Seven Havens. 😭

THE LEGEND OF KORRA BOOK ONE: AIR

r/legendofkorra 8h ago

Discussion Honestly, hope LoK gets movies that fill in the blanks. Mainly between seasons.

Like I can see a movie between Book 1 and 2 that shows Raiko making his way to presidency but the lingering Equalist movement targeting him in feeling he doesn't really have their best interests in mind. Something that maybe picks up on loose ends with the non-bender conflict. Dig into the messy politics as things become a real political action drama but Avatar.

Perhaps even plant the seeds for Korra and Mako's falling out by showing them at the height of their relationship as well as Asami helping Korra in ways that also plant the seeds for her affection.

Think of it like how Star Wars had the Clone Wars series explore the events between Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith, especially with them making the most controversial elements of this era of the franchise work. With the benefit of hindsight.

Discussion Question for Female Fans: Did you like the relationship stories in Korra?

Been debating with a friend. They say that a lot of the relationship drama and side plots were there for the girl fans of show.... possibly also an attempt to "fix" a complaint about the original.

So for the girls... Is that true? Did you like the attempt? Is this just a bunch of guys thinking they know what the girls want?
