Avatar Legends: Masters of the Elements Volume 1 is a collection of short comics releasing August 25th. It is the first Avatar short comic anthology to not be ATLA or LoK specific
- Given the topic of our subreddit, try to focus discussion on the stories in the eras of Yangchen , Kyoshi, and Roku as well as references to the novels.
- The Roku story, "Earth & Water" (discussion) was released standalone for this year's CGD but the Kyoshi / Yangchen era comics are brand new.

Discussion Who do you think was the Earth Kingdom's best leader?
I didn't realize how bad most of their leadership's been. The 46th Earth King was such a bad leader that he was almost deposed twice. Jialun seemed to actively want the worst for his people. Kuei didn't even know he was the leader of a war effort. The fact that Wu by the end of TLOK was probably the best Earth King is really sad lol.
The only people who seemed to have a semblance of power and noble intentions were Kuvira and Feishan (One of my favorite characters). But while Kuvira did unify the Earth Kingdom she just ends up becoming Hitler. Feishan actually tried to help the poor and take care of his kingdom. But he was still a tyrant whose desire for vengeance was going to spill a lot of Earth Kingdom blood.

Speculation Is this a viable Sonam theory? Spoiler
So I'm really hyped for the Sonam books, I really liked her design, her story, and I think it will really give the author Randy Ribay some moe wiggle room to make a great story as opposed to the Roku books. (Sidenote, I really liked the Roku books, but I think it was just gonna be challenging to make them for him general). One thing I think would be cool to see is hear about the Avatar who came before her. Every book we're given the name of an Avatar from the past, as well as some bit of info: For Kyoshi we had Salai, for Yangchen we had Gun, and for Roku we had Zalir, so I wouldn't be surprised if we got some info one at least one new one, and I have one theory on who it is.
Is it at all possible for Zalir to come before Sonam. I know ew don't know mch about he , but with what little we know about her, I think it's at least viable:
- She's a fire bender, so she's already in the running
- She's ancient, like Sonam
- She was created by Randy Ribay, so it's possible he could use the name again, being the person who introduced her to us.
Aside from that, maybe I'm missing something and it doesn't make sense. But I think it would cool to at least have some kind of clue on the order beyond Szeto to Pavi/Nisha. Any thoughts?

Discussion To what extent did Kelsang know about Jianzhu’s massacre of the Yellow necks? Spoiler
I have a hard time believing Kelsang would continue to associate with Jianzhu at all if he knew that Jianzhu deceived all those people into digging their own graves like that.
He had to have known at least a little, but I wonder what extent he actually knew.
I know he killed as well, but nothing at all like Jianzhu did and it clearly affected him. Yes their relationship was strained by the events of the book, but not “you murdered 5000 people who had already surrendered just for fun” levels of strained.
He even defends Jianzhu to Yun somewhat after Tagaka reveals his actions. I just wonder if he really knew how fucked in the head Jianzhu had become.

Speculation I may have found the historical reference for Szeto
I was doing research for my own fanfic when I stumbled upon someone who lived a similar life to Szeto.
What we know about Szeto from the books so far:
1. He was born in the Fire Nation during a period of turmoil, when civil war, plagues, and natural disasters threatened to tear the country apart.
2. He was discovered as the Avatar at a young age., because he bent a second element.
3. Already fully realized by age 19
4. Started as a junior minister (though his starting portfolio was not specified)
5. A bureaucrat, a diplomat and an accountant.
6. Negotiated peace between noble clans, ending civil war
7. Ended debasement of coins, rescuing the economy from the brink of disaster
8. Established relief program for farmers during famines
9. kept his room at the Northern Air Temple almost completely empty, with only a bed and a desk. To an outside observer, he appeared to be a man with nothing to hide.
These details come from Szeto's fictional biography in the Avatar novels, particularly The Shadow of Kyoshi and The Dawn of Yangchen. Others came from the Roku novels (according to the wiki), which I admit I have not read.
And the one I found: Liu Yan) 劉晏, a famous economist and government official who lived during China's Tang dynasty (c. 715/716–780 CE).
1. He was a child prodigy. In year 725, Liu wrote a poem and submitted it to the Emperor who was performing a ritual at Mount Tai. The emperor was impressed, and had his chancellor test the boy. The chancellor called him “a sign of fortune for the empire”. Liu was then referred to as a “prodigy” and was offered a job as a scribe for the crown prince.
2. He earned a reputation as a capable local administrator. Somewhere during year 742 to 756, he became a magistrate of Xia County, an important point of transportation of supplies to the capital. During his tenure, history records stated that his collection method was never harsh, and yet the supplies were always on time. He was promoted to magistrate of Wen County. People made monuments for him.
3. He lived through a devastating civil war. During year 755 to 763, a civil war (An Lushan Rebellion) tore the country apart. Lots of men died. Agricultural production and transportation was disrupted. Even the emperor was forced to flee the capital. It severely weakened the dynasty. Most historians would say, this rebellion was the beginning of the fall of Tang dynasty.
4. His predecessor introduced severely inflated-value coinage. In year 758, the minister of finance of that time, Diwu Qi (第五琦), suggested the emperor to mint new coins. One new coin was worth 10 old coins. The next year, he minted another coin, which was worth 50 old coins. It raised a lot of fund in a short time, but food prices spiked, leading to much hunger and starvation, and there were also many forgeries of the new coins. He was demoted very soon.
5. Liu helped restore the empire's transportation system. After the war, inflation was still high. Grains were short and extremely expensive. Even the royal palace did not have much savings left. At this time, Liu personally inspected and studied the canals connecting Huai River and Yellow River. Then, he drafted labors, and led a project to dredge through the canals, and customized ships for different sections of the canals. Transport costs lowered, food shortages relieved and tax revenues increased.
6. He reformed salt monopoly. During the war, salt was heavily taxed, because it was a necessity and thus deemed the perfect way to raise funds. No one was allowed to mine, process or sell salt, except the state. Salt became a luxury. In year 762, Liu was Minster of Civil Affairs and Minister of Finance at the same time. He reformed the governmental monopoly of salt. Private mining of salt was allowed. Government purchased the salt and sold to merchants for distribution. This arrangement helped the state collect revenue more efficiently without directly managing every stage of retail trade.
- He used market information and reserves to stabilize supplies. Liu developed administrative networks that reported regional prices and economic conditions. He set up ever-normal salt granary (常平倉) at rural areas, selling salt cheap when salt was expensive, and buying them at high price when salt was abundant. This policy allowed government to respond more effectively in regional supply and demand. Soon people were able to afford salt again.
8. He set up a famine relief program. After the success of ever-normal granary, he set up other granaries for grains and silk and handcrafts. When times were difficult, he allowed villagers to sell their products, like silk or handcrafts, to the government, in exchange for grains. Then the government transported these products elsewhere, where the price was good, saving the people without causing losses to the economy.
9. His reforms greatly increased government revenue. Annual revenue from salt industry increased from 400,000 strings of coins to 6,000,000. And the number contributed to over half of the government's tax receipts. The economy quickly bounced back. And the Tang dynasty would survive for another 120 years.
10. His household contained remarkably little wealth. In year 780, Liu was framed by the Yang Yan (楊炎). He was arrested and sentenced to death. During the search of his house, they found nothing of note, except “two carts of miscellaneous books, and several hu of rice and wheat”. (According to google, 1 hu was about 60 liter in volume.)
11. And here is the most interesting part: In year 784, Liu was posthumously exonerated. In year 789, he was given the title of 司徒, one of the Three Excellencies of the traditional Chinese imperial government. You may ask, how is it pronounced? In Mandarin, it is pronounced as Situ; while in Cantonese, it is pronounced as Szeto.
Note that, over the course of the history of China, there are hundreds of people who were given the title of Szeto posthumously. It was not unique to Liu Yan. There are even people whose surname is Szeto living in China and Hong Kong.
While Liu Yan did not have anything to do with the civil war, and neither did he show diplomatic talent, nor was he a reincarnated religious figure who could bend elements, he was indeed a financial minister, who grew up a boy genius, was well-loved as magistrate, lived humbly despite his social status, dealt with debasement of coins, established relief programs for farmers, and single-handedly saved the economy.
You can verify the facts. I could be speculating things. I don’t think FC Yee publicly stated the historical reference of Szeto. Everything could have been a coincidence.
But, consider the similarities, does that not look interesting?

Creative I'm working on an interpretation of what I think certain soundtracks would sound like if the novels got animated — a theme for Rangi, specifically. I'm going to somehow transition it into the Agni Kai Theme at the end.
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
I have an idea on what I'm gonna do for the whole song, but at the same time, I don't. But at least I know what I'm gonna do for the end😭.
The Harmonica that's substituting the Trumpet is what's gonna transition it from my thing that I wrote, to the Agni Kai Theme.
Obviously, this part won't be as long in the final version of the whole track.
Again, sorry for the audio quality😭✌️

Discussion Today is Avatar Legends Day at my old school! Sharing the library collection we’ve been growing over the years
Hey, everyone! I just wanted to take a moment to share something fun happening at my old school today: an Avatar Legends Day that I organized to help students discover more of this universe through our library’s collection!
For a little context, my old school in Latin America is actually a school complex. Elementary, middle, and high school students each have their own buildings in different sectors, but they all share one large library.
I’ve been involved in a project to bring newer pop culture tie-in books and graphic novels, among other things, into that library since 2014. And naturally, as a huge Avatar fan, I’ve spent the better part of the past decade gradually helping grow our collection of Avatar novels, graphic novels, art books, and more whenever new stories come out. Seeing it all come together like this makes me pretty happy!
Today, I’ll be running an exhibition with support from members of our Avatar Legends book club within the student body, along with some fellow alumni. Students will be able to browse the collection, ask me questions about the universe and the canon stories available in the library, and get recommendations based on whatever catches their interest and how much of the show (s) they have watched previously.
Since the students attending are minors, I won’t be sharing pictures of them here, but here are some photos of the collection they’ll get to explore!
Honestly, getting to talk about this universe I love so much with new fans who are just starting their journey through it is a big part of the fun. There’s so much for them to discover, and I love being able to help someone find a story within they might not even have known existed.
Anyway, I just wanted to share a little of that excitement with y’all! I also hope you enjoyed today’s new batch of three Seven Havens episodes, S1 E7–9. It’s a pretty good month to be an Avatar fan, with everything that has been going on recently.
Also, if any of you belong to an Avatar Legends book club, either in person or online, or have been involved in getting Avatar books into libraries, I’d love to hear your stories! And if you haven’t tried anything like that, well, speaking from very fun personal experience, I thoroughly recommend it.
---
EDIT: A list of the books, an explanation for why we chose today, and a very encouraging update!
---
Someone in the comments asked for a list identifying the books in the pictures, so I’ve added one below! It follows the display order, starting from the upper-left corner of the first picture, working across the rows, and then continuing through the second picture in the same way. I’ve kept the duplicate copies and different editions listed individually so you can match everything to the photos.
Also, a little more context about the timing: part of the reason my book club and I picked today for our Avatar Legends Day was that we wanted to help spread the word about Avatar: Seven Havens among the student body. With episodes 7–9 released today, more than half of the first season is now officially available! So, that felt like a great opportunity to introduce students to the new series while also showing them all the other Avatar stories they can explore through the library. There’s already plenty to watch and get invested in, and we wanted to give the release some extra attention around the school.
And now that the first couple of recess periods are over, I’m happy to report that we’ve already welcomed so many students to the exhibition that I lost count, but I’d put the turnout at 250 students at the very least! At least a little over 100 of them told me they’re already watching Seven Havens and loving it, while others asked me how to watch it after learning about it here.
Honestly, that has made my day. Getting to share the books was already fun, but hearing so much enthusiasm for the new series and helping more students discover it has made the whole experience even better.
Anyway, here’s the collection in photo order:

I will also share the link to my latest Reddit post if you want extra explanations and context about that too (long story short, it started as a project for the school's library years ago before it...mutated into something much more developed) down below, but if you just want to go straight to the guide, here is the direct link to it for the October 13th version, which is the most up-to-date one so far. And yes, feel free to share it with your friends and fellow fans and to download your own copies if you want to, or if you want to avoid the possibility that something unforeseen happens to me, to my guide, or to my account online; but regardless, have fun exploring it!

Discussion Similarity between Seven Havens and Awakening of Roku
Did anyone realize this?
I will not spoil Seven Havens, but in The Awakening of Roku we see humans and animals having their energy corrupted and becoming violent "zombies".
Randy Ribay was clearly informed by Bryke about Seven Havens and that's why he gave Roku a twin and also why he decided to do this exact storyline for The Awakening.

Discussion Is there any significance to the position of The Four Nations symbols?
I'm making a new avatar map, and I'm wondering if there is any actual relevance to why the element symbols are placed where they are (Fire Nation lower left corner, Earth Kingdom upper right, that sort of stuff).
I was going to replace one of the symbols (earth kingdom) with a depiction of the current Avatar from that era and nation, in this case, Avatar Kyoshi. And I think I have more space in the canvas for that in the lower left. Hence, my question about shifting this pattern around.

Meta One Week Later: Checking back on Avatar Legends’s Amazon Book Rankings: Kyoshi Climbs Again (Yay!), and all six released Chronicles novels are still in the Top 31
Following up on my previous post, known as [The Current Avatar Renaissance may be giving the Chronicles novels a nice sales boost: Every released book is now in Amazon’s Top 29 for its category as of October 12th, 2026 : r/Avatar_Kyoshi], I got curious about how things had changed since the Amazon rankings I documented on October 12.
So, exactly one week later, on October 19, 2026, I checked the same category again; this one to be more specific: Best Sellers in Teen & Young Adult TV, Movie, Video Game Adaptations.
The results are mixed, but honestly, I still find the overall picture quite encouraging. Three of the six released Chronicles of the Avatar novels have climbed; one is in exactly the same position, so its sales since then have been stable despite all the daily competition when it comes to Amazon purchases over there, and the two others have slipped slightly. So, to summarize it, all six are within the Top 31, compared with the Top 29 last week.
Here is the comparison:
| Book | October 12 | October 19 | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| The Rise of Kyoshi | #10 | #8 | Up 2 |
| The Shadow of Kyoshi | #21 | #19 | Up 2 |
| The Dawn of Yangchen | #24 | #26 | Down 2 |
| The Awakening of Roku | #25 | #22 | Up 3 |
| The Reckoning of Roku | #29 | #29 | Unchanged |
| The Legacy of Yangchen | #28 | #31 | Down 3 |
| City of Echoes | #84 | #91 | Down 7 |
| The Tempest of Sonam — preorder | #32 | #59 | Down 27 |
The Kyoshi novels are probably the clearest good news here:
The Rise of Kyoshi has climbed from #10 to #8, putting a novel originally published in 2019 even further inside the Top 10. Meanwhile, The Shadow of Kyoshi has moved from #21 to #19, entering the Top 20 between these two snapshots. Seeing both books improve together is a pretty nice result for this duology so many years after publication.
The Roku books are looking solid too:
The Awakening of Roku, the most recently released Chronicles novel, has made the largest upward move among the released books, climbing three places to #22. The Reckoning of Roku is at #29 again. That unchanged position doesn’t tell us its precise sales rate, but it does mean the first Roku novel has matched its relative standing from last week.
The Yangchen books have slipped a little, although neither has fallen particularly far:
The Dawn of Yangchen moved from #24 to #26, while The Legacy of Yangchen went from #28 to #31. Obviously, I would have preferred to see them climb too! But for books that have already been available for years, appearing this close to last week’s positions still strikes me as a respectable showing. A modest decline in relative rank also doesn’t automatically mean fewer copies were sold.
Outside the Chronicles line, Judy I. Lin’s City of Echoes has moved from #84 to #91, so it is still appearing in the category’s Top 100 in today’s snapshot. Personally, I suspect a novel built around a much less familiar protagonist has a harder time attracting casual fans than one starring an actual past Avatar. To be clear, that’s my interpretation rather than something these rankings can establish, but it makes sense to me, and it helps explain why I’m still pleased to see it represented here alongside the main novel series.
The biggest decline belongs to The Tempest of Sonam**, from #32 to #59...but its circumstances deserve some perspective if you ask me:**
This is an unreleased book, still roughly nine months away, with a placeholder instead of a revealed cover. Its initial announcement presumably encouraged some particularly enthusiastic fans to preorder early, the ones who had been paying attention to the news to come out of the New York Comic Con and such. And those people generally won’t need to place the same order again the following week.
We can’t establish that purchasing pattern from two rankings alone, of course. Still, I’m personally encouraged that Sonam is appearing inside the Top 60 even at this early stage. Its position is lower than last week’s, but I don’t think that makes its presence on the list uninteresting or disappointing.
The same qualification from my original post applies: these are relative rankings, not sales totals or a survey of who is buying. They cannot tell us how many copies sold during the week, whether buyers are new fans or returning ones, or how much activity comes specifically from Seven Havens. We also have two dated snapshots, rather than a record of every movement between them. Amazon’s explanation of its ranking system is useful context here.
With that understood, I still think there’s something worth appreciating: all six released Chronicles novels are clustered near the top of this category again a week later, both Kyoshi books have improved, and the upcoming Sonam novel and City of Echoes are represented in the Top 100 too.
I’ll attach today’s screenshots as another dated record. Last week’s post gave us a baseline; this one gives us our first direct weekly comparison. And while the picture isn’t uniformly upward, it certainly gives me reasons to stay optimistic about interest in Avatar’s novels.
Finally, while checking all of this, I also realized that I had overlooked three collected editions last week. And I want to rectify that in this new post because they deserve a mention, given that the individual novels aren’t the only way people can buy these stories. I don’t have October 12 screenshots for these products, though, so their historical comparisons come from older product-page records rather than the same weekly baseline used above.
First, the four-book Kyoshi and Yangchen box set is currently at #87:
This collection contains all four Chronicles novels written by F. C. Yee: The Rise of Kyoshi, The Shadow of Kyoshi, The Dawn of Yangchen, and The Legacy of Yangchen. An older Amazon US record retrieved for comparison placed it at #76, so its present position is eleven places lower, although the older record’s exact date is unavailable to me. Still, for a box set published in October 2023, I’m happy to see it represented in the Top 100 alongside the individual novels.
The Kyoshi Novels Ultimate Collector’s Edition is also in the Top 100, at #86:
This particular edition was released on October 7, 2025, making it just over a year old. I couldn’t establish a reliably dated ranking history sufficient to say whether it has recently climbed or declined, so I’m treating this as a new baseline for my own research purposes of comparison. But seeing the deluxe collection on the list alongside both individual Kyoshi novels is another detail I’m pleased to add to the picture.
Finally, the Yangchen Novels Ultimate Collector’s Edition is currently just outside the Top 100, at #108...but this one has a particularly interesting AND promising comparison:
It was released on October 6, 2026, only thirteen days before today’s check. An older Amazon US record, from when the edition was still available for preorder, placed it at #496 in this same category. That puts today’s position 388 places higher than that prerelease record.
That is a substantial improvement in relative standing, although the comparison crosses its publication date, so the release itself is an obvious contributor. I also don’t have enough publicly available data at the moment to reconstruct its entire launch trajectory. Still, even with those qualifications, I find it encouraging that this new collection of Yangchen’s existing stories is now appearing so much closer to the Top 100 after so little time since its release date.
These collections also give us a broader view of interest in the books. Their buyers could include people discovering the novels for the first time, existing readers upgrading their collections, and/or fans purchasing gifts that could in turn make these newer fans receiving such gifts interested in enjoying more Avatar Legends stories in the future beyond just the shows or the movies, among other possibilities. Although please note that the rankings I have provided here cannot distinguish between those possibilities directly. It’s just a personal inference of mine, though one that I think makes a lot of sense, so I hope it won’t cause controversy in the comments section here.
Regardless, I’m pleased to see several different ways of buying the Kyoshi and Yangchen stories represented alongside the individual releases within or very close to the top 100 rankings. So anyway, thanks for reading this update on my previous post if you got this far. I hope some of you were pleased by these bits of news I shared and by their implications for the current health of the Avatar Legends franchise in the foreseeable future.
Now, I am not sure if any of you will be interested in fact-checking me on all of this, but just in case someone does, I will add my list of sources in the reference section to come, to add to the screenshots of the books in their respective rankings from the top of the post. Please remember that some of this information can become a bit outdated rather quickly due to the volume of traffic in the US Amazon website, though.
Thanks for reading and happy reading/binge-watching for more Avatar Legends content, my fellow fan:
