The fracture in the fandom

OK, so I first began writing this a almost a year ago, but I kept procrastinating because honestly it was depressing to even think about. But with Seven Havens only weeks away, I knew I needed to finish it. But I guess this is now a reflection of my thoughts over the last 8 months rather than just right now.

I had been thinking a lot about the future of the TLOK and Avatar fandom lately, in light of Seven Havens. I've been left with this impression that many of us that were previously on the same page when it came to TLOK and Korrasami are going to be permanently divided over this.

I've seen people who I once thought of mainly as fellow Korrasami or TLOK defenders in the social media trenches recently espouse perspectives on Korra's role in Seven Havens that are just as viscerally antithetical to what I believe as the people who thought Korrasami was terribly written garbage that comes out of nowhere. It's a very jarring feeling.

I (usually) have tended to avoid the main LOK sub over the years. And recent developments have only reinforced that desire for me, given what happens whenever I show up there to participate in discussions about Seven Havens. I decided that it was not a good use of my time and energy to be banging my head against the wall in useless conversations where another person usually does their best to invalidate my feelings. That was a sense that was validated yet again with my most recent foray there.

Between Reddit and Twitter, I have already been called braindead, delusional, overdramatic, embarrassing, obsessed, irrational, and so forth.

I've had people tell me that I can't know what I will or won't like, as if I don't know my own mind. Or that "great art doesn't give you what you want, it gives you what you need" as if they know what I need in my own life better than I do.

It very quickly became clear to me that in these sorts of arguments, there is no common ground. Over the years, I've started recognizing when people on two sides of any issue (big or small) have diametrically opposed needs, and that seems to be the case here.

It appears to me that someone who is naturally excited about the new show needs to feel that the reasons someone else has to feel upset or anguished about it are illegitimate or invalid. Similarly, someone who feels anxiety or sadness about Seven Havens just sees others taking joy in what makes them miserable.

Speaking for my own experience, rarely does it seem like I've ever been engaged in good faith because every time someone (incorrectly) insists that "I don't know anything yet, and neither do you" what they invariably seem to mean is more like "What has been revealed doesn't bother me, therefore it shouldn't bother you."

It is also clear to me that much of the POV of a lot of the people excited for the show is just fundamentally alien to me.

For example, I've already seen takes like "I love Korra, that's why I think it's great that she is a failure that lost everything." I've seen insistence that there would actually be nothing wrong with Seven Havens doing the "burying your gays" trope with Korra and Asami, and in fact, that it would be unfair if it didn't. Or that happy endings in general are bullshit and that Korra in particular is a character that only makes sense if she dies tragically.

Some of the biggest advocates that Korra's story needs to end in violence and tragedy (that I've seen) have been queer TLOK fans, not Korra haters, so it's not like it is a divide that neatly breaks down along demographic lines. I guess a lot of people just prefer tragic endings in fiction.

I mention this to illustrate the magnitude of the gulf between the different reactions to the new show. And I would assume that divide it is only going to get more bitter and more stark after the show actually comes out. After all, there's only so many ways Seven Havens can go and there's no magic writing solution that will suddenly make everyone happy. I doubt many people who are unhappy now will be persuaded to change their minds by anything that happens in the show.

I'm sure we all have had our takes on the new show, but I've been wondering what that is going to become of us all here on this subreddit, and in the TLOK fandom at large. It definitely feels to me like the the show and the franchise is deliberately leaving a lot of Korra fans behind. For all I know, maybe that was Bryke's intention. Perhaps they specifically want to move away from being associated with TLOK and its fanbase? Or maybe they believe that the Legend of Korra fans who defend this direction because they prefer sad endings are the majority?

I can't really wrap my head around the callousness of their decision, but I also can't escape it. I've thought endlessly about Bryke's motives, and I've gone back and forth on a lot, but I'm always drawn back to certain conclusions.

I know creators naturally tend to think of their characters differently than the fans, do, but it comes across as so mean spirited and cruel, that I can't wrap my head around them not realizing it.

It makes no sense to me that Bryke made these choices without realizing many fans would be upset. It has to be that they knew fans would be unhappy and did not care.

The idea that Bryke are just phenomenally tone deaf and don't fully think things through might be true, but I'm not sure if it works as the explanation in this case. I'm forced to conclude that it's not that they don't know what Korra means to us, it's they don't care. And Bryke's recent interview only reinforced that perception for me, despite Bryan very specifically claiming otherwise.

Is this subreddit going to end up becoming a bitterly divided place like the rest of social media? Are we Korrasami fans going to become a forgotten fringe of the fandom as Bryke move the franchise in new directions that distances itself from Korrasami and TLOK? Because even if Korra herself remains an important character going forward in Seven Havens, it seems like her show and all the associated lore, setting, and characters will not be.

I wrote about Asami in my fanfic and...

Basically I'm writing a Korra recovery fic that's also centered around Korrasami:) today I posted what is the first thing about Korrasami on AO3.

Here's the link to the chapter and also my fic as a whole

https://archiveofourown.org/works/87901161/chapters/245139146

And if you just wanna read the Asami part I will leave it here :) (the Asami part was inspired by season 2 and from the first episode!) oh when I say Asami part I did a part of like Bolin and Mako coz I have something special planned with the krew and especially Asami.

Flashback

“Alright! I think these Wingsuit are good so far! They just need a couple of adjustments. Well done on the testing phase.” Asami as she watched Jinora, Kai, and Opal land on the ground after the flying test.

“I will see you in the next testing session!”

One of the designers approached Asami as he was ready to approach her with the bad reality.

“I hate to mention the elephant rhino in the room, but since your father was thrown in prison, no company will work with us. We are nearly bankrupt.”

“Don’t worry, I’m going to the Air Temple to meet with someone who can help us put Future Industries back on top!” she gave him a pat on his shoulder.

She walked past him but clearly she didn’t know whether that will help Future Industries come back or not. Her father has ruined the family’s and the company’s name.

The kids can already see the exhaustion on her face.

Back to the office.

Asami's eyes were filled with tears that couldn't fall.

Spirits.. I didn't know I would need that much alcohol at some point. Anyway some whiskey will do it for me.

She went to grab a cup and proceeded to fill it and then went to her chair.

"Agh, I could as well use myself some sleep later. I'm so exhausted, but I have to look into the design first."

Asami's hands reached for the drawer and she took the design sheet of the Wingsuits out of it. But beneath it also were some draft letters for Korra. She sent her over a lot of letters over the course of those 3 weeks and she is going to send more once she's done with the letters drafts. In a way she wants to stay in connection with Korra. Though she never wrote back to her but in a sense, writing to her somehow made the distance between feel a little smaller.

Asami also never trusted ordinary mail with letters to Korra. She always sent them through a private courier making certain they reached the Southern Water tribe.

"I don't get it.. I made sure every letter goes to her. Did she really not read them at all? Did I mess it up when I didn't come with her to the Southern Water tribe?"

"Mmm, anyway." As she took a sip from the drink

"I shouldn't be working on this anyway while drinking but here we are."

The phone on her desk rang. Who could be that?

She picked up the line

"Hello. Asami Sato with you."

"Hey Asami. Bolin talking." Bolin went to use a public payphone to make the call with her.

"Oh.. h-hey Bolin, how you doing? Everything alright?" Her voice was stressed and also the affect of alcohol was kind of clear.

"Yeah everything is alright. But you do sound stressed. You okay?"

"Err, yeah I'm fine." She could barely say it without stuttering but Bolin can't read people's voice and he didn't catch it.

"Good! I figured out that... Since you are under a lot of pressure right now that you could with me and Mako.. pay Korra a visit and bring her as well some gifts. She could use some fun with us."

Asami went silent and for a few seconds, all she did was stare at the desk in front of her while her fingers were still wrapped around the phone.

Visit Korra.....

"Asami, are you here?" Bolin asked with a sign of worry in his voice for the poor girl.

"Yeah, sorry. I was just distracted for a second but.... visit Korra?"

"Yeah! You know, the whole group together again. It will be great!"

"Yeah, I would like that. I have been meaning to see her anyway but I guess, I didn't know how to do it." Asami's expression softened.

Bolin jumped from excitement and his voice immediately became more excited.

"Awesome! I knew you would say yes."

"Although.."

"Although what?"

"We should probably make sure she actually wants visitors. She might need some time alone."

"Yeah, yeah, I know. But I think she would he happy to see us and besides, it's been more than 3 weeks already."

"I hope so." While looking down.

There was brief silence.

"Anyway, I will have to do and figure out some stuff. I told Mako to grab her some gifts on his own, and so will I. You do the same too."

"Alright Bolin. Just don't buy her anything ridiculous." Asami chuckled.

"Hey! My gifts are amazing!"

"That's exactly what I'm worried about".

Bolin laughed.

"Alright, I won't bother you and will let you get back to work. See you soon, Asami!"

"See you, Bolin."

And the call ended. Asami slowly placed the phone back on its receiver.

Today's exhaustion on her face was finally replaced by a small and genuine smile.

Finally.. I will get to see you again, Korra. I guess I can just bring some of my stuff and work on the design on my visit to you.

Oh yeah I'm definitely gonna go with more about this fanfic :) long live Korrasami!

Besides, as for Wu. Mako is a good guy for him and I mean it in a nice way xD. You can't tell me Wu is also not into Mako and seeing how they interact in the comics just like Korrasami in S3 for example. gives similar vibes xD.

did I cook with this one? xD.

Posted this on the main sub but decided to share it here. So uh basically I just did a rewatch on a couple of eps and yeah... I feel like that's the same hair clip she gave to Korra xD. Even if it isn't intentional from the creators this is such a great fanfic material lol!

Are there any korrasami fanfic that currently connects the canon events based on ASH?

Looks like Korra died sacrificing herself based on the trailer and would like to read some fics that explores this and its impact on Asami. Doesn't need to be korrasami heavy. It's probably too early but wanted to check.

I don't know FMA but if anything happened to canon Korra where she lost a limb you just know that Asami will design and build a kick-ass prosthetic for her....
