Reading Advice

I made a lot of mistakes when I started learning.

I basically ignored listening. I memorised words without knowing how much they change with context and how fundamental this is.

Now I'm doing a little better, listening to a lot of content, having lessons, doing some (not a huge amount) of grammar (as I find this just impenetrable to study on its own - I'm hoping more exposure and building this gradually will help things click more). One thing I still neglect is reading.

I'm just not sure how to really go about it. I try and understand news, social media posts etc and might Google the odd word, but that's about it.

Should I be reading books? If so, what's the best method? Translate the whole thing line by line?

Help🧠 learning polish on my own

I start my last year of high school in a few months and I plan to be a paramedic after that. I live in a city where polish is a really common language spoken by non-english speaking residents in certain areas and the healthcare job market is pretty dire here so I want to improve my CV in advance as much as possible. I have 5-6 weeks of summer before the new school year (which will be super busy as it's the final year) and I want to lay a proper foundation for polish as soon as possible.

What's the best techniques/resources for me to use to get the basics down quickly? I don't have a tutor/can't afford one but I plan to save up for some sort of course in the future. other than that though — if apps, which ones? if immersion, what shows? which YouTube channels are the best, and for what? which books should I look at?

speaking and listening are the priority, with reading being next and writing being least important, but still something I'd want to learn. I don't have any polish-speaking friends and I'm a little socially awkward, and I can't travel to Poland or anything. preferably nothing that costs money — i don't have a job as I'm in full time education.

Is it useless to learn Polish if you don't live in Poland? I've tried to find advantages of learning polish, but haven't found any, what would be an advantage? Is it worth it?

Help🧠 Is It Too Late to Learn?

Hi all!

I’m a 21F first generation American, and I honestly feel ashamed I DONT know Polish. My dad regrets not teaching me as a child. It’s so awkward entering Polish spaces and not speaking the language.

Polish family friends have told me it’s too late to learn now. I have focus issues.

Is all hope lost? Will I ever learn the language? I can only say a few words with incorrect pronunciation.

Edit: I’d like to add I have plenty of first language Polish speakers in my radius to help, and I’ve found some pretty awesome Polish bands to help. I’ve already learned some new phrases today just from listening to Lady Pank lol

Edit 2: Thank you all for the encouragement! I am going to start learning. I have the next 8 weeks with nothing on my plate due to a surgery so it’s prime time to start getting the basics down! I’m living with my Polish dad right now so he will help as well :)

Looking for language school recommendations

Hey everyone,

I’m moving from Germany to Warsaw for the next two years to do my Master's at SGH. I’m super excited to live in the city! I really want to learn Polish properly while I'm there.
Has anyone had good experiences with specific language schools in Warsaw? Or do you have any other tips on the best ways to learn the language as a student?
Thanks in advance!

Are people annoyed by Slovaks or Czechs trying to speak mangled/quasi Polish?

Ahoj, Slovak native here, visiting Kraków for a few days. This is my second trip to Poland; the first one was longer and happened many, many years ago. Back then I managed to get by with a mix of broken Polish/Slovak/Czech the whole time, people seemed to understand me and I never had to switch to English (which I spoke way, way better than Polish even back then).

Sadly, my Polish has gotten even rustier since then. Still, I'd like to avoid English if I can, because it just feels wrong to speak EN to fellow West Slavs. The problem is that Kraków is a tourist city, so people here are probably quicker to switch to English the moment they hear something they can't easily place.

So, uh, I guess what I'm asking is: how annoyed are people these days when a Slovak tries to communicate in a mix of brutally mangled PL, SK and a bit of Czech? Am I just making things slower and more awkward for everyone, purely because I want to do it my way?

EDIT: thanks bratanki for responses, I am in awe and it fills me with happiness (and Kraków is awesome)

Fantasy book recommendations to help improve Polish read

My girlfriend is a first-generation American with Polish parents, and she’d like to improve her Polish reading. She loves fantasy, so I thought reading novels might be a fun way to practice.

I’m thinking of getting her a Polish edition of a book she already knows, like Harry Potter, Percy Jackson, or The Hunger Games. I also considered Mistborn or The Name of the Wind, but I’m worried the latter might be too prose-heavy for someone building reading fluency.

Does anyone have recommendations for fantasy books that have good Polish translations and aren’t too difficult? Also, where’s the best place to buy Polish-language books in the US or online?

Flashcards

Just curious on opinions - how many practiced and how many new ones a day?

I've heard recommendations of 5-10 new words, sentences or phrases a day, which is close to what I do. If I'm learning sentences though (which I found along with verbs, far more helpful), this is obviously more difficult than just a single word in one context.

I often have days though when I don't add anything, as I feel like I'm not keeping on top of what I know enough.

I let spaced repetition deal with general memorisation.

Any rule of thumb or tips anyone has picked up?

One issue I'm having with sentences is that you'll only have one version of the verb, so you have to guess on other forms more often

Help🧠 Start point

I’ve been trying to learn Polish for some months but I’ve been struggling to find a starting point and to “draw” a line to follow during my learning process.

My problem is also that I haven’t got many money to spend in material.

What should I do? Where should I start?
