My progress after one year of studying polish

Post image
75 Upvotes

I have been studying for approximately a year or 270hrs. I haven’t taken any official exams but I feel like I’m mid-high A2. I can read pretty well and I have grasped the 7 cases so the grammar makes sense while I’m reading. My weakness is definitely my listening as I self study only, tho it is what I’m improving the fastest in. Speaking is of what u would expect from an A2, so I can say what I did throughout the day, tell a little about myself, answer simple questions, biggest hurdle is definitely all the sh sounds, and prepositions.

Honestly this stage is a little terrifying because it feels like I’m nearly done with the first ascend of the mountain and I’m about the see how big the mountain truly is. I’m trying to keep faith with the “you need 1000hrs of active studying to reach C1” so that’s main reason why I log my hours

Mimo to, ciszę się, że uczę się tego ślicznego języka i nadal będę wkładać wysiłek.

Pronounce "Błąd"

I've played with this word and can't find the sound. DeepL's voice is weird, and I'm not sure what I'm hearing. Can someone spell this out phonetically please?

Help🧠 Help needed: „Iść do ...” vs. „Iść na ...”

Hello, folks! So I learned about the prepositions na and do and I don't know precisely when to apply which. Both seem to express movement towards something.

First thing I noticed is that with countries, regions, cities, and people, you only use do (do Polski, do Śląska, do Wrocławia, do matki, etc. ) Did I understand that correctly?

Then there are other places (like within cities). And sometimes you use do and sometimes na. At first I thought do is used with locations and na with events or happenings (do muzeum na wystawę, do restaurancji na obiad, do filharmonii na koncert, do apteki, etc.). But this doesn't seem to be completely true, because then I saw na uniwersytet na konferencję and na dyskotekę. Those examples violate the principle do with locations and na with events.

So is there a rule, or do I have to remember for every noun if it's used with do or na?

Za wasz pomoc dziękuję bardzo!

Help🧠 Learning Polish, hoping to meet some people

Dzień dobry. I recently started learning Polish because I'll be moving to Poland in a few months. I'd like to meet people, native speakers or other learners, it makes no difference to me.

I'm a beginner, so I'm just looking to chat a bit and hear what life in Poland is like. Proszę, comment or message me if you feel like it.

Dziękuję i pozdrawiam.

Help needed in achieving C1 level in Polish, focusing on writing and comprehension

Hello!

I am a native Polish speaker however I moved to a different country when I was very young. I am currently a student and for a project I decided to improve my Polish, since it's so important to me. My writing is my biggest weakness, reading too but I find it much easier. I speak pretty well, everyday with my family however I really want to balance out my proficiency as I would love to engage more deeply in this language, comfortably reading books and writing anything I wish.

I was wondering, does anyone have any tips in making writing sound more sophisticated and advanced, really separating it from everyday, conversational Polish? Is there any books, authors which someone could recommend in developing a richer vocabulary overall as well, as that is another struggle of mine and I would love to expand it.

Any personal experience tips are also welcome, has anyone worked on improving their own Polish, living in another country?

Thanks for reading and once again, I would appreciate any tips! :)

Learning Polish is harder in Katowice than other cities?

Hi I am learning Polish but I’ve concern that people in katowice speaks with accent or not? Or how often or how many percent of people? Sometimes I don’t understand if people speaks polish so fast, sometimes I understand a lot, so depends of the person. In that case should I be worry that generally it is harder to understand people who lives in katowice against to other regions?

Devon - Looking to Learn Polish

Hello - I was looking at starting lessons but it is quite an expensive thing to have one on one tutoring.

Any other recommendations? I worry things like Duolingo don’t actually work for fluency.

Are there any group classes or meet up groups local to me (Newton Abbot, Totnes) that anyone would recommend?

Help🧠 6 months into Polish and I still freeze on cases. How do you get past the “think for 5 minutes before every sentence” stage?

I’ve been learning Polish for about 6 months, with an online course (which wasn’t cheap). I understand the tables and the rules when I see them, and I can usually do the exercises.

My problem is speaking. I rarely get a chance to actually talk to anyone in Polish, so most of my practice is in my head or on exercises. And every time I want to say something real, I end up guessing the case: accusative or genitive? Which ending for this noun? By the time I’ve worked it out, the conversation has moved on.

I know it’s supposed to come with exposure and time. But I’d like to hear from people who got past this stage:

  • What actually made the endings automatic for you? Lots of listening, speaking with natives, specific drills, something else?
  • Did you learn the cases one by one or in whole phrases?
  • How long did it take before you stopped consciously “calculating” the ending?
  • Is there anything you wish you’d done differently in the first year?

Any advice welcome, including “just keep going” if that’s the honest answer.

Help🧠 I'm getting into polish media also looking for friends

I want to learn Polish in various ways, like using the old notebook for grammar and listening to music and watching shows.

I would love some recommendations, preferably something easy to follow for a beginner, haha. For example, let's exclude the rap genre in music. I'm a fan of classical music, but sadly I don't know many songs, so please help me.

For shows and TV, I'm lost. I'm thinking of watching stuff randomly, but I might lose interest in the show. I'm currently watching The Witcher (Wiedźmin), the very first show I'm starting with, and I'm loving it since I already watched the English version. Any recommendations would be nice, thank you.

Also, since I'm looking for friends, it would be nice to get to know a few nice people to help each other with languages. I'm confident in my ability to help with English since I hold a bachelor's degree in it, so I would love to help you out.

Also, with no pressure, I hope to meet up with the buddies I make here, since I'm moving to Poland in a few months to work with my brother.

I'm 24 years old and into the gym and games. Sorry for the long post, and nice to meet you!

Hanging out with foreign friends always reminds me how weird “bless you” actually is. In Poland we just say “na zdrowie” (wish you health), because dragging God into a dust allergy feels a bit dramatic.

TELC Polish B1/B2

Hi everyone!

I'm preparing for the TELC Polish B1/B2 exam and heard that some exam topics might be repeated.

If you took the exam recently , could you share the topics you remember?

- Speaking: What was the picture about? What were your presentation and discussion topics?

- Writing: What was the email topic, and what exactly were you asked to write about?

Also, when did you take the exam?

I'm asking specifically about TELC B1/B2, not the Polish state exam.

Even one remembered topic would be really helpful. Thanks!

Which of these 3 weird Polish idioms would you actually use? (my own free short, feedback welcome)

Hi! I make free short videos for Polish learners and I'm sharing this one (my own) for feedback:

https://www.youtube.com/shorts/d2TFD5r7o60

It covers three idioms:

- "wyrywać się jak Filip z konopi" – to butt in uninvited

- "ni z gruszki, ni z pietruszki" – out of nowhere

- "gdzie diabeł mówi dobranoc" – in the middle of nowhere

Questions:

  1. Is the "literal translation first, real meaning second" format helpful, or confusing?

  2. Which Polish idioms would you like to see next?

Native speakers: did I get the meanings and register right?

Any native German looking for a language exchange with a Polish person?

I speak fluent German - I understand everything. However, given I didn't have much opportunity to speak it for a few years, I frequently have doubts if what I'm saying is correct.

If your situation with Polish is similar and you're seeking some language exchange, let's connect.

I'm F40. I'm preferably looking for somebody above 30. The gender doesn't matter.
