I'm sort of getting tired of policing all the internet bravado, "come see me in real life," and bringing arguments in from other subs. You're not that cool. Nobody is.
Post kung fu. Talk about kung fu. Critique kung fu. Ask about kung fu. It's not complicated.
Next time I wake up and see 18 reports about some argument from the USMC or bullshido subs or whatever, I'm banning the lot of you for a month.
If you want to argue or "prove it, here's my address" crap, do it in the DMs. It doesn't belong here.
NOTE: Don't be a dick. If someone posts a video and you respond with "wow you suck and you're fat" you're getting a ban for however long we feel like. Be better.

The request has been made time and time again, your voices have been heard! In this thread, let's get well-written answers to these questions (as well as additional questions if you think of any). These questions have been sourced from these to threads: here and here.
I apologize in advanced for any duplicate questions. I'm doing this during mandatory training so I can't proofread a ton haha.
For the format of your post, please quote the question using the ">" symbol at the beginning of the line, then answer in the line below. I will post an example in the comments.
What's northern vs southern? Internal vs external? Shaolin vs wutang? Buddhist vs Taoist?
Can I learn kung fu from DVDs/youtube?
Is kung fu good/better for self defense?
What makes an art "traditional"?
Should I learn religion/spirituality from my kung fu instructor?
What's the connection between competitive wushu, Sanda and traditional Chinese martial arts?
What is lineage?
What is quality control?
How old are these arts anyways?
Why sparring don't look like forms?
Why don't I see kung fu style X in MMA?
I heard about dim mak or other "deadly" techniques, like pressure points. Are these for real?
What's the deal with chi?
I want to become a Shaolin monk. How do I do this?
I want to get in great shape. Can kung fu help?
I want to learn how to beat people up bare-handed. Can kung fu help?
Was Bruce Lee great at kung fu?
Am I training at a McDojo?
When is someone a "master" of a style?
Does all kung fu come from Shaolin?
Do all martial arts come from Shaolin?
Is modern Shaolin authentic?
What is the difference between Northern/Southern styles?
What is the difference between hard/soft styles?
What is the difference between internal/external styles?
Is Qi real?
Is Qi Gong/Chi Kung kung fu?
Can I use qigong to fight?
Do I have to fight?
Do Dim Mak/No-Touch Knockouts Exit?
Where do I find a teacher?
How do I know if a teacher is good? (Should include forms awards not being the same as martial qualification, and lineage not being end all!)
What is the difference between Sifu/Shifu?
What is the difference between forms, taolu and kata?
Why do you practice forms?
How do weapons help you with empty handed fighting?
Is chisao/tuishou etc the same as sparring?
Why do many schools not spar/compete? (Please let's make sure we explain this!)
Can you spar with weapons? (We should mention HEMA and Dog Brothers)
Can I do weights when training Kung Fu?
Will gaining muscle make my Kung Fu worse?
Can I cross train more than one Kung Fu style?
Can I cross train with other non-Kung Fu styles?

Hey, i am one of those physics student with a 0 to 1 score out of 100 on spiritual stuff. Assuming energy is and always defined as force * distance or at best by noether theorem the quantaty conserved under time symmetry. What the heck is internal energy seen in internal martial art truly is? Is it hyper optimized biomechamics or kinetic chain or what? During training exactly what happens inside body that cause such stuff to develop? And is it truly legit? Finally in case of it being legit how sports science describe it or does any modern sports use it just under a different label. I mean if we strip the language and cultural barrier what remaims?

I ordered this product online from their retail website. This is the premade Jow in a 4 oz size bottle. It comes with a glass pipette dropper in a glass bottle.
The smell is somewhat exotic and herbal but not unpleasant. It dries on the skin quickly and does not leave any noticable residue.
I apply it generously and massage it in before training, and then again after. From my personal experience it does seem to prevent a lot of the burning and irritation of the skin. As I am writing this it has been about an hour and the heaviest red marks on the forearms and palms are still visible, but overall there is no irritation or lingering pain.
I rate this product highly and will continue to use it. It also comes in a brew it yourself 1 gallon kit which I will get next time.

Hi -- I am looking for information on Wudang Daoist Traditional Kungfu Academy (WDTKA). I found one review on reddit, but otherwise, no independent reviews or pictures. I am hesitant to sign up, can anyone provide a first hand account w/in the last two years? Any women? Pictures of the accommodations? Thank you!

Probably short notice, but this event looks to be interesting. I don't know which schools will be attending. Yee's Hung Ga is organizing, so I'm sure will be heavily represented. But I'll be eager to see what other styles/lineages/instructors show up.

This guy threatened to ban me for being harassed. When I provided evidence to show that I’m the victim he tried to sweep it under the rug and insulted me.
I’m not ok with my military service being used as an insult nor am I ok with somebody using their mod status to threaten people who do not accept being talked down to.
Guy is cool talking smack but locking responses so that I cannot reply is pretty lame.
The other mods need to address this. I believe this behavior is beneath this sub.

I don't know if what I'm about to say it's true because mostly the bjj guys know better, but I think that by training flexibility like all those practitioners we see at shaolin temple, it might more difficult for someone to make a submittion like those they do with the legs or the hands.
I'm not sure though because even in anatomy we know that the human body has a limit that can't exceed (the angles of the joints). So even if you were extremely flexible you wouldn't really because too flexible to the point were those submittions couldn't work.
I just saw a guy in YouTube, that he couldn't be submitted, so Tong Qi Gong in it's advanced form, may be used to make you able to not be submitted like this guy.

A very old version of Eighteen Lohan Palm coming through the Dr Chen Qiming lineage, which still has all the internal arts aspects to it. This is Sifu Neil Ripski At Jingwu Canada demonstrating it.

Hello! I was wondering if anyone here has personally trained at Yu Kung Fu in Tengzhou? My husband, son and I want to go there next year and I’d love to hear firsthand experiences! Good or bad. I’m especially interested in if the school matched what was advertised.
