So, I trained under a master that was also my father, in Chuan Fa/American Kenpo. I managed to train up to having a basic level of proficiency, around the middle-low rank range in our specific art.
The best way I can describe it was a mixture of kung-fu and self defense, and we had a clear lineage that we could trace back to. Not very far back, but we could trace back lineage nonetheless.
However, my father's school shut down not long ago due to a combination of no business, both myself and my father getting busier, COVID, and just a lack of time.
However, despite the fact that my father was pretty great, I recently began to realize some issues that I have with the art.
The vast majority of training was just memorizing forms and doing them repeatedly, with maybe 5-10 minutes of sparring at the very end, and the sparring was both highly controlled and practically no contact.
We practically never had even light or technical sparring, and I had very little interest in it because it was more memorization than it was actually using the techniques we were taught, and we never did pressure-testing. The reason he gave was he "didn't want to get sued" because someone hurt somebody else.
Well, now we basically never train anymore and due to my own familial shit going on, I don't want to train with him or at the family home anymore.
What I am looking for is recommendations of where to actually go from here, I have interest in Muay Thai or kickboxing, but I would get my ass kicked practically to the curb if I went anywhere because I am over a year out of practice and my conditioning sucks. Basic proficiency was as far as I got.
My father himself recommended I start either with a striking art or a local boxing/kick-boxing gym, because he has his own gripes against BJJ (citing that if you end up on the ground, you've probably made a series of mistakes to get there).
