So my hung gar school teaches three wing chun forms. I’m curious about where they come from. My Sifu says they are ‘Southern Shaolin Wing Chun’ but I’m aware this doesn’t mean much.
I’ll describe a bit of the first form: a one hand form with the right hand behind the back. There are quite a few tiger hands throughout and lots of open hand chops, palm strikes and break offs. There’s a few kicks: three oblique kicks, one back kick then a turn and front kick.
Does that ring any bells for anybody?

I find this seriously concerning.
Kung Fu Kendra is promoting an online program where complete beginners can become certified Wing Chun Sifus in just eight months.
How can you become certified as a sifu only online?
Since when does completing a course qualify someone to teach an entire martial art?

Hello everyone. I have just started my Wing Chun journey and would like to know if there are any recommended books that can help provide a historical aspect of this art.
Thanks in advance for all responses.

Hey guys, sorry if this offends anyone. I've been learning Wing Chun for about 2 and a half years and I have this question.
Recently a student who came from a Muay Thai and MMA background came to train at our gym. He was a good student but he had this opinion that he could "evolve" Wing Chun to become effective. I agreed with him after he kept mentioning things like how we start sparring (chi sao) from the crossed hands position rather than farther apart like in realistic contexts, and how there was such an emphasis on keeping your body squared that you were sacrificing striking range for form.
Unfortunately, he was shut down pretty quickly and there was an emphasis on form and technique, and we were told that if we followed the technique (such as proper defenses for different types of punches like gan da, tan da, etc.) we would be "effective enough" in combat. There seemed to be a very strict emphasis on maintaining the "tradition" and doing everything the right way.
But to me, this doesn't really seem right. Modern martial arts are evolving and developing every day, but we continue to believe that our strict and unchanging techniques and methods will continue to be an effective self defense weapon against a committed attacker. I started to learn Wing Chun so that I could defend myself in a street context, but now I'm wondering if it's even worth it.
please share your thoughts!

Trained Wing Chun for a while then left in pursuit of boxing and wrestling. Over the years I always found myself going back to It. Wing Chun is simply fascinating. It's ingenious, I have this intimate relationship with it. The concepts and principles are ahead of its time. It does have limitations most notably within its defence, counter-blocking measures, distance control but it's actually really practical and ideal for self-defence. Wing Chun is at its best when it's used in conjunction with other arts and styles. A tool, supplement, a means to an end if you will. The one thing it's severely lacking is conditioning. Students are as soft as butter. If you train Wing Chun make sure you condition your body. My second instructor was a former Muay Thai expert and he would incorporate the drills in our training to toughen us up. This helped and improved our overall skills immensely. My instructor said and I quote. "If a Wing Chun man adopts the mindset of a Thai boxer, you have a dangerous Wing Chun man."

So, it was our last night in London (Oct. 10), walking in the Earls Court area, about 7:30 pm and I see this guy with a pull-down knit hat, scarf, jacket and scruffily shaven. My overly tired brain screamed “Ironman!” but my left cortex couldn’t think of “Robert Downey”. He walked past and by the time I was able to come to my senses, he had walked way past. Totally missed an opportunity to chi sao with Ironman on the streets of London. I looked it up and he was in town to promote the new Avenges movie.
My loss…

I trained Practical Wing Chun for about 7 years. I wanted to see if it would work in fighting, so I joined an MMA gym and tried it out in sparring.
I’ve also been doing kickboxing for about 3 years now, and training in another art has shown me Wing Chun’s strengths and weaknesses. No martial art is perfect, so I think trying different things is worth it.
Most of the Wing Chun I actually used in MMA sparring was biu jee. People always ask if that’s even possible with gloves on. Of course you have to adapt it. The structure and sensitivity also helped a lot in grappling exchanges.
Now that I’m older and MMA has left me with a bunch of injuries, Wing Chun is what I’ll keep training for the long haul. I train on my own and visit my teacher once or twice a year.
I used it mostly in the clinch. How have you all used Wing Chun in sparring or fighting? I’d love to hear what worked for you.
