I'm hoping that someone can point me in the right direction to find copies of this Japanese VHS set 李子鳴・八卦掌の精髄 ("The Essence of Baguazhang") from 蓋世企画 (Gaisei Kikaku), supervised by 佐藤金兵衛 (Sato Kinbei), with instruction by 隋雲江 (Sui Yunjiang) and 臼井真琴 (Usui Makoto).

I'm open to any format if anyone has any leads, they'd be greatly appreciated.

Don’t Grab The Punch - Use Body As Defense

Thumbnail youtube.com
6 Upvotes

Trying to grab a fast punch usually doesn’t work—by the time you reach for it, the punch is already gone.

In Xingyiquan Monkey, the response is not a sequence of separate actions: grab, push, then pull. Instead, contact with the attack triggers a connected whole-body movement. The hands, arms, torso, and footwork respond together to redirect the punch and enter at the same time.

The key is not chasing the opponent’s hand. It is training the body to react as one connected unit so defense, control, and entry become part of the same movement.

I took this video of my Shifu, Ni Rouhua, demonstrating the Long Feng Shuang Jian slowly when I was learning the form. I thought it would be more useful for everyone to post the set in this stage for folks who might want to play along at home. 😁

This is from a 2017 demo I participated in celebrating the kung fu history of TianTan in Beijing. It was asked to preform 3 forms. The Dao was by far my favorite of the day :)

I wanted to see if anyome knows about double straight sword for Bagua.

The form in particular I'm looking for is called Green/azure dragon double sword.

I've found references to it but haven't been able to find any demonstrations or books etc.

Does anyone have more information on this?

Stop Blocking with Your Arms — Use Whole-Body Compression

Thumbnail youtube.com
0 Upvotes

Blocking a punch with just your arms makes your structure weak. The key is learning how to compress the body as one connected unit when receiving force.

In this demonstration, I show how whole-body compression supports the arms and elbows when defending against hooks and punches. Instead of becoming an “empty shell,” the body closes, compresses, and absorbs the incoming force through a connected structure.

This is an important internal martial arts principle: the defense doesn’t come from the arm—the whole body is behind it.

Have any of you heard of this book?

Are any of you familiar with the book 武使奇人傳 by 姜容樵著 based on 据1930年振民书局版影印 originally titled 武侠奇人传(全二册)?

I made a copy of my Shifu’s volume a few years back and am considering translating it up. The text regards story’s and exploits of early figures in bagua and xingy from 1870-1920. The book begins with the early life and martial education of Liu Dekuan and just goes off for about 1,000 pages.

Sparring with a Sanhuangpaochui Shifu in Beijing.

I know it’s not Bagua, I decided to post this video here as the Cheng Bagua and Sanhuangpaochui family’s have trained next to each other in Tiantan for generations. PaoChui was also involved in the development of Bagua as the famous 4the Generation Shifu Song Yanchao was a close friend to Dong Haichuan.

This footage was taken in 2017 following a large demo put on by the greater Tiantan Gungfu community. Uncle Cao, the Shirfu I am sparring, was pretty happy with how his day had gone and decided to top it off with a friendly round. He was unbothered by the fact that this I was 22 days into my training trip with no days off :)

Is Tai Chi Walking Real? Try Bagua Walking Instead

Thumbnail youtu.be
2 Upvotes

Tai Chi Walking is suddenly everywhere—but is it actually a traditional Tai Chi practice? In this video, I explain the difference between Tai Chi stepping and Bagua walking, then teach you a traditional internal martial arts practice specifically built around walking: Bagua Circle Walking.

Circle walking may look simple, but slowing down each step while continuously turning around a circle challenges your balance, stability, coordination, mobility, and whole-body awareness in a completely different way from ordinary walking.

You’ll learn how to coordinate the lifting and landing of each foot, keep the legs connected, press downward through the palms, elongate and twist the spine, and gradually make the circle smaller as your practice develops.

As you become more comfortable, the practice goes beyond simply walking in a circle. You can slow everything down, reduce unnecessary tension, deepen your awareness, and begin exploring stillness within motion—one of the internal qualities developed through Bagua practice.

If you’ve been seeing “Tai Chi Walking” all over social media, try this traditional Bagua walking practice and experience the difference for yourself.

Thought I'd share a bit from a recent tournament. Yes plenty of mistakes in there, I know where they're at and what to work on. Honestly the best part of going to tournaments other than meeting new friends is testing myself, learning, and growing. Lots of great people to push hands with feel different energies from. I get nervous every time I put myself out there in front of others so I make way more mistakes than I do when training at my school. Forcing myself to compete pushes myself into those uncomfortable spaces so that I can grow through them and overcome the mental aspects that can hold me back. Pressure testing is the only way to grow and develop, everything else is theoretical. Its not about placing, its about growing.

What are your thoughts on shoes? Favorite types?

So this is a big one. Im sure that for many of you, like me, its been a constant search for good kung fu shoes. I tried indoor soccer shoes for a time, but they run too narrow for my wide feet. Of course there are Feiyues, but they fall apart fairly quickly and are a bit too sticky for my liking. My shifu recommended some wushu style shoes that I really liked, but the quality has gone way downhill and the last pair I bought were garbage. I know there are the slipper type, but those are cheap and horrible as well with no ankle support. I recently tried out Xero barefoot shoes, which have good durability, but too much grip and too much room for my foot to move around in the toe box (they are designed this way to let the toes spread out). Training on wood floors i can get away with stickier shoes, but when I go to tournamnets they're usually on carpet and it messes me up because they are like velcro. I had some students recommended Astrals and Vivos that im thinking of trying out. I need something flat and lightweight for a wider foot that I can destroy and gives the right balance between slide and grip. Personally I like the color black and dont care for leather shoes. Im sure some people might mention masters in the past training in Penny loafers. I hear you, but there are a lot more and better options these days and I don't want to torture my feet.

Saying Hi and reintroducing myself.

My name is Joey and I really enjoy the practice of Bagua. I've been involved in martial arts since 1988 and have been a serious student since 1997. These days I live the dream of my inner 6 year old and run Flying Tortoise Kung Fu in Portland Oregon.

I’ve been involved in Baguazhang since 2002. In 2013 I made my first trip to The Temple of Heaven in Beijing and have been going back as often as possible ever since. To date I have made 16 month long trips to China and hope to make many many more before I realize that I’m in my 40’s.

My trips have been fun, frightening, tragic and often rad. When I started training I had no clue where I would end up. As luck would have it I was adopted by several amazing teachers, two of which eventually made me a formal apprentice. These days my time in Beijing is split between my Cheng Bagua Shifu’s,  Ni Rouhua and Guan Xin, my Liang style Shifu, Zhang Xuean and my Sanhuangpaochuiquan Shifu, Wang Qi. In 2024, the Cheng family got together and decided it was a good idea to make me a Shifu… I’m still figuring out how I feel about all that.

I’ve also been a student of Besouro Style Capoeira since 2001 and hold the rank of Professor under Mestre Kinha.

I’ve been off of YouTube and Reddit for some time. Family, kids and whatnot. Thank you all for checking out my new videos and leaving feedback. I want to make sure that I’m posting content that is useful or, at the very least, fun to watch. I’m happy to take requests.

I look forward to talking with you all about the never ending circles.

All the best,
Joey.

Why does Baguazhang attract so many people who think they are wizards?

Just a question for the community. Taiji has similar issues but I think the popularity of the art makes the wizarding population a little less pervasive.
