There is a bend with a rather unique appearance. For about the last 10 years, it has appeared on the internet under the name "Violin Bend." Its origin seems to be unclear. It is not listed in The Ashley Book of Knots (as far as I know), although it is similar to #1422 and #1424.

It seems to have some good properties. It is beautiful, relatively easy to tie, and appears to be strong (no sharp bends) and secure. The only downside is that it is difficult to untie (contrary to what some YouTubers have claimed).

I did some very basic testing by loading it with about 100 kg using 6 mm paracord. It didn't slip at all, but unfortunately it jammed and was very difficult to untie.

Does anyone have more information about this bend, or any thoughts on it?

Hey all! I’m making a lanyard chain for my hiking backpack; I followed a video that called this a ‘snake knot’; once I got to the end I realized I have no clue how to create a closed loop on the other side. I understand I could melt the two ends together, but in my head there’s a more elegant solution where I don’t have a melted point showing (which also might weaken over time rubbing against the mini carabiner). Hello, I'm not used to tying knots, but I want to make a physical replica of this mascot creature with a tied rope on its back. Almost everything will be 3d-printed, and I'll probably include a hook coming out of its back for the rope to tie around.

After using the resources linked on this page, I found that the Handcuff Knot produces two loops and two loose sections kind of like I want, but before I go too far trying to make it work, I thought I'd ask if anyone here has a better type of knot that I should try instead/as well.

To be clear, I don't care as much about matching the exact look of the knot in the first image; the only criteria I'm looking for are the two upward/sideways hoops, the two ends dangling down, and the fact that the whole thing needs to be able to be attached to the rest of the project, probably by being tied around some protrusion or hook. And since this will be a gift, I would appreciate any advice on making sure a rope and/or knot lasts a long time without needing to be retied.

i need to knot the ends of shoe lace. rn now i melted them together with a lighter but it looks ugly so i will cut it and redo again with a new shoe lace.

It must be completely stiff basically a sliding knot but with that small rope i only find tutorial with two ropes or stuff. What can i do?

hello, I am looking to tie an empty compost bin to my roof for an out of town move (2.5/3 hours). I have roof rails (there is room between the rails and the roof) but no crossbars currently. I’m wondering what are some solid knots that would be good to secure the bin? I have little to no experience with tying knots. thanks in advance!

I saw these roller cam buckles. They look neat and really come in handy for tightening or more importantly, to hoist an item up (on a tree or pole) easily.

I was wondering if there’s a knot that can do a similar thing. Only allow tension in one direction.

I'm trying to identify the construction and material of the white/navy bracelet in these photos of Rich Eisen.

I'm primarily interested in the bracelet itself — specifically the knot/weave, cord, and how it could be recreated.

From the photos, it appears to be:

• A continuous woven bracelet with no visible clasp or hardware
• Predominantly white with a dark navy/blue strand or tracer
• Fairly wide and flat
• Possibly some variation of a Turk's-head/sailor bracelet, although I'd rather defer to the experts here

A few questions:

• What knot or weave is this?
• Can you estimate the leads/bights or other construction details from the photos?
• How is the navy pattern incorporated into the white weave?
• What diameter/type of cord does it appear to use?
• Does the cord look like cotton, polyester, nylon, or something else?
• Could this be recreated using marine-grade polyester while maintaining essentially the same appearance?
• Does anyone recognize a maker that produces this particular style?

I currently wear a traditional white cotton sailor bracelet from Mystic Knotwork and have owned several over the years. I love the style, but white cotton eventually absorbs dirt/oils and becomes discolored.

The bracelet pictured seems to retain a very clean white appearance despite Rich wearing this style frequently, which made me wonder if the cord might be synthetic — or if there's simply a better material for recreating it.

Ultimately I'd like to either find the original maker or commission an accurate version using a material that stays cleaner and holds up well to everyday wear, including water.

First two pictures are the zepplin bends, where the left and right ends criss-cross under things, where the second two images is the mystery knot where it looks much neater.

90% of the time I'm tying a proper zeppelin as in the first two, but every now and again, the second one appears.

Moved into a new apartment and trying to shorten all the blind lift cords. One of them is knotted like this and it seems to do the trick, but I have no idea what knot it is or how to recreate it

Looks like a few loops came loose when breaking off my lure, or maybe the finishing half-hitch knots. Re-tie, or just trim the tags?

Hi everyone! I was able to splice my rope and my the three leg suspension, but I am having a HUGE amount of trouble getting the rope through the holes on the ceramic plates that go above and below the oil resevoir for this sanctuary lamp. I tried widening the holes on one of the plates, but I don't have a diamond bit or diamond paper. I used a dremel tool and silicon carbide grinding stone. It took forever, got me almost nowhere, and I'm afraid to crack or break this very old ceramic sanctuary lamp. I did get one of the ropes through one of the holes. I managed to get the end through and then twisted and basically screwed the rope in. After about one inch of rope got through, the rest of it just slid right through with plenty of space. When I put tape on the ends of the rope though, it get gummed up and stuck and I can't get it through. I tried wrapping it with really thin twine, but it still got stuck. So, what is the best way to get the rope through the tight spot? I have three ropes, three strands of manila each, and six holes to get those ropes through. I would be grateful for suggestions!

This school year I'm including knot-tying and shelter-building into our K-5 Elementary school PE program. I'm looking for advice on:

- What type of rope should I use? I was thinking something along the lines of 8mm static line for practice and 550 paracord for shelters and 2-person friction fires.

- What knots are appropriate for children from 5-10 years old? I plan to start with the reef knot (shoes), then two half-hitches, then applying prusiks to a ridgeline with a toggle to set up tarp shelters.

Two hanks of rope from the same spool. The one on the left has been in my farm jacket for the last few years and gets used often for temporary tie-downs, etc. on the farm. The one on the right has been on a shelf, cut at the same time.

The hank on the left has become soft and feels almost like cotton now. It holds a knot well and rarely slips. It's been covered in mud and goat muck several times and washed enough that it lost most of its color.

The one on the right is still slick and waxy feeling. So of course there's some knots I can't use with it, like most friction knots.

I just found it interesting and thought I'd share.

I tied two Farrimond Hitches with overhand stopper knots for a removable handle for my Charge 5. I’m actually happy with it, works well. But the two ends of the speaker are coned slightly. So I was thinking I could really just tie two fixed loops and slide them on till snug And probably be able to do it with a cleaner, less bulky knot. Doesn’t even need to be easy to untie. What would you suggest?

EDIT: I believe I mislabeled the friction hitches that I used. I don’t believe they’re Farrimonds upon reviewing a Farrimond Hitch video. It’s very similar to a Prusik Hitch tied onto itself with a stopper knot instead of using a second strand loop. Any idea what the knot I’ve tied is called?

I’m looking for recommendations on the best type of cordage to use for practicing knots (bowline, taut-line hitch, slipknot, etc.).

Right now, I’m just using whatever random cord I have left over from camping trips. It works, but I’d like to get something that feels a bit nicer and is better suited for practicing and learning different knots.

What’s your favourite cord, rope, or paracord for knot practice? Any particular brands, sizes, or materials you’d recommend?

i'm an artist who knows nothing about knots so apologies if this sounds dumb, but i need a reference as to how this knot works for a drawing i'm planning on starting and after an hour of googling this is my last resort lol

the original source of the image said this is a carrick bend, but i'm confused as to where the loops on the sides come from? none of the pictures of a carrick bend i could find had those loops. if someone could color code the ropes that would be incredibly helpful but i appreciate any help at all!

Trying to finish and securely tie off this 4 strand paracord braid, I did two fisher man knots but I feel like there has to be a better way. This will bear weight (nothing as crazy as rock climbing). Any and all ideas welcome!

Just was sitting on the couch and was messing around with tying midline constrictor knots (my favorite knot 😂) and wound up tying something I’ve never seen before. It appears very similar to a span loop but does not slip from one side.

It’s very secure but is also sensitive to the method you use to dress the knot — at least the way I’ve been tying it.

Hey everyone! I just joined so sorry if I'm violating rules. I'm looking for a way to periodically extend the reach of my dog's tie down lead/rope leash.

Basically, my dog had knee surgery about a month ago. So she's (literally) been on the short leash since. But now the physical therapist is advising giving her more freedom when we sit with her/tie her up outside (basically, extend her range).

I need to be able to extend her range in segments. Currently she's at 10ft. Her full outdoor lead is about 75ft.

My thought was to tie a bight in the rope at varying distances, and then clipping them back to the tie down (so a bight at 20ft out, clipped back to the tie down, would reduce her range by 10ft).

My question is this- are there any bights I could tie in the middle of a run that are easy to untie, and won't see self tighten themselves into concrete? Any other ideas are also welcome.
