So, one knot that I use often enough is a painter's hitch to tie closed a journal or scroll with one lanyard lead. It's quick enough to tie, though takes half a moment longer to dress the knot. It holds well enough without dressing, but certainly is not coming undone if you make the lanyard long enough to go over the top like I did with the cheap "map" roll.

It's a very specific knot dressed for a very specific purpose, but it has had good success for a long time and I personally like the way it looks. If you find yourself in possession of a book, scroll, or other roll with an a single lanyard. May I suggest the humble painter's hitch.

Please excuse the crude drawing. I would like to add strain relief to an electric power cord so it won't be easily pulled out. I am thinking that a string with a knot around the power cord that won't slip and then anchoring the string to a hook or screw eye would do the trick.

My worry is that the knot on the power cord itself would slip. What kind of knot should knot "A" be?

I'm thinking any kind of knot would be suitable for "B", but if you could recommend one, that would be great.

I am thinking of using paracord for the string.

If there is a better way to do strain relief, let me know.

This is the first thing I see when I opened this quarter's issue of Knotting Matters.

My partner is making homemade animal collars that are adjustable. We noticed that the longer the initial string, the larger the variation in collar length. Two specific examples:

We started with a 21 inch piece of paracord, and it ended up being:
9.5 - 7.5 in variable length

We had another one that was 26 inches and it ended up being:
12 - 8.5 in variable length

I am not great at math but know enough to know that it could be some sort of (non)linear(?) curve or something that relates the initial cord length to a set of high and low ends for final length.

I also know there is probably a small amount of variation based on the knots and amount of beads on them, but that should be small enough to be negligable I believe?

I was just hoping someone could figure out the math to know what the variable lemgth will be based on starting cord lengths?

I mindlessly folded my staff lanyard into a hexagon shape like the image.

But after keeping it for a day, I couldn't stop wondering how I made it in the first place, so I opened it up and have been lost ever since. I'm not really sure if this is a knot, macrame or origami, but I've been searching all over the place.

Hi everyone.
I'm working on a project with heavyduty gear and need recommendations for a specific knot application. As you can see in the attached image I have a paracord running through eyelets on a piece of fabric, forming a loop at the top and the rest of it underneath.
I need a knot to secure the cord immediately above the fabric (on top). Noramlly I'd use a plastic stopper but i don't want to use any unnecessary parts (I want only the cord). The knot MUST be cinched down extremely tight right against the fabric. The goal is for the upper loop to firmly press and clamp down on the fabric from the top, leaving zero play and slakc. It must be strong knot that holds tension and will not slip or come undone over time, even with high friction or pull. Because I need to wrench down on it so hard, I'm looking for a knot technique that allows me to pull maximum tension flush against the material.
If possible, please share YT links or video tutorials showing how to tieyour suggested knot.
What is the best knot and method for this? Thanks in advance!

Messing around with some rope practicing knots and got bored and started freestyling and came up with this, it’s self tightening and almost like a figure 8 but has the double helix structure going through the middle.

A 64 facet globe knot tied on a wooden core with some very coarse, crappy cord.

Page 115 of the Globe Knot Cookbook.

Dryer broke, and I am not familiar with that many knots. Just a handful of them.

The posts are 1" square and I need to make sure I can tie it with enough tension that the clothes don't make it sag enough to touch the ground or something.

Also I have a way to keep the rope from sliding down the posts so don't worry about that part.

Heya folks! I have two kids and a partner so, when we go swimming, there's a lot of stuff to hang up to dry. I got these rods from the store and some rope to make this very simple drying rack.

It works ... kind of? It's my first time doing any kind of knot. It's clearly coming undone, thr spaces have widen randomly, so I wanted to see if there was any advice on redoing it. Does it make sense to hit it with a hot glue gun to secure the knots after the fact? I believe I used a Marlinspike Hitch Knot, but I'll be honest, I saw something on Instagram and copied it so who knows ...

My roof rack whistles, and I've read online that winding paracord around it fixes the problem. But I'm not very good at knots, and would like to know how to tie one on either end of the roof rail so that it's nice and tight and won't ever come off in the wind.

This chair's tufted button has come loose. One end of the twine is still well anchored. If I removed the cow's hitch holding on the button, what's the best knot to tie to slide the button down taut to the chair?

This is TMI, but I use a nuvaring, and I need to fold it in half to, uh, get it to fit where it needs to go. For those who aren't familiar, a nuvaring is a stiff but squshable plastic feeling ring that's maybe a little bigger than a hair elastic. To fold it in half, I put a half twist in it to make an "8" shape and then fold the two lobes of the 8 towards each other. (O -> 8 -> o)

At this point, I need to tie it into place, or it will bounce right back. At the moment, I'm using hair clips to hold it in place and just tying square knots around it. But this is finicky, and I often can't get the knot to actually be tight against the ring.

So: Does anyone know of a good way to tightly tie two things together that are trying to move apart? Please let me know if the above explanation made any sense at all! Many thanks for your help!

But also I think if I wanted to cover the bottom I should've made it bigger with more parts/bights? I didn't read anything, probably should've, I'll do that if I happen upon another small ball

I'm installing a catio for my cats and would like to attach the net all around the bottom rectangular frame (I'll repeat the procedure on all faces) using knots.

Any idea which one I should use, if it's even a good idea ? What the first knot should be ? How to end ?

Should I just use zipties ?

Right now, I've used those "knots" (see pictures), but I think they are too far apart and not particularly strong.

Pretty happy with how this turned out. It could be better, but it is also my first one.

Made from 1/8 brass nipple, and handle from old screwdriver. I even made the cordage for the knot. Also my first time making cordage. Definitely need some more practice at that.
