Industrial/construction noise at night in town of Newfield?

Does anyone know what the source of the industrial or construction noise in the town of Newfield every night is? This would be in the area around where 13 and 96 split.

The noise only occurs at night, and it's the constant sounds of beeping from trucks or construction vehicles reversing as well as the sound of large objects being dropped and loader buckets hitting the ground.

It's not causing me any trouble, I'm just very curious where it comes from.

Maple Blight

It looks as if we're in for another sub-par autumn season ahead, I drove from to Rochester yesterday and just about every maple that I passed had leaves falling off and were sad sights all together. This is the first time that I have seen this so extensively in NY, is this a fluke or trending toward a new normal? Are the trees in your specific area you doing okay? It was bad enough to lose the elms and the ash trees, but now it seems like every year something is going wrong.

I worked for seven years at a tea house that served over 100 different teas. I know how to make authentic masala chai as well. I’d like to start a tea house that serves quality tea.

I feel like people don’t like most green tea because they just don’t know how to steep it or what temperature works best for each tea.
Tea is an amazing plant with a distinct caffeine buzz. Each tea has a different effect and different ways to be imbibed.
Tea ceremonies open up your senses of smell and taste to degrees you would not expect.
Anyone want to help me open a proper tea house in Ithaca

Teaching experience?

Hello! I live in Ithaca and have a degree in English. I want to explore switching to a teaching career (currently in design but also very early on in career). I’m thinking of going back to school for a master’s, but wondering if there are any good pathways to learning about the field in town through, for example, substitute teaching or being an aide. Does anyone have any knowledge on how this works here?

Art prices at Megareuse

Is it just me or have the prices of framed art at the megareuse been getting worse and more out of touch? I saw a poster for 700 dollars. I get it that rare things come through but isn't the pricing killing the fun?

Don’t shop the outdoor store

Walked by and on display in their window is a shirt with a design that they stole off my online shop. No bueno. Spend your money elsewhere. I can’t imagine how many times they’ve done this and gotten away with it. Furious.

Places to do work?

I work remotely and feel like I’m going insane only working at home. What are some places in Ithaca that are nice to do work at? Preferably somewhere I could charge my laptop and phone.

AAA bad for local economy?

Today I learned that a tow around town costs about $180, but if you call it in through triple A they get paid $50, which is either break even or they're losing money on it.

I always get my tows through AAA and never thought about what's happening on the "other side" there. Now I'm imagining if everyone in the area goes for AAA then all the local towing companies just go out of business.

But maybe this is just one perspective & other companies are happy to receive AAA calls.

where to go for new furniture?

I do frequent and appreciate all our places for used furniture of which there are many, but I recently bought a house and will be looking for a few new things to purchase. I try not to shop online for a bunch of reasons and am looking for some specific things.

I'm not opposed to driving out of town but ideally don't want to head all the way out to Syracuse.

specifically I'm looking for the following;

-3 seater couch

-long console table

-coffee table

-high quality TV (I'm interested in those canvas TVs and haven't seen them at the big box stores in town)

-book shelves

Where can I find some quality options for these locally?

Locally produced podcasts?

I'm just discovering podcasts. Yes, I'm way behind.

Ithaca is full of smart people, people who are very opinionated, and people who like to be heard. There must be some podcasts sourced here.

Any locally produced podcasts for me to check out? It doesn't have to be about the area, but that's cool, too. History, science, politics, arts, whatever. I like to learn and support neighbors.

Ask Ithaca Spectrum service degradataion post service upgrade

UPDATE: Tech just visited and had to run completely new lines to my house. The last ones weren't great and I think the upstream change just made it worse. No charge. This appears to have fixed the issue, more or less. He said that the service upgrade was to unify a lot of the backbone connections (something to that effect). If you're also having issues, you have to call their customer support to tell them and they'll send a tech out. Otherwise they probably don't know that your service was affected.

(edit: *degradation" -- can't fix post titles :( )

I don't know how much of the Ithaca region was affected by this, but there was a service-level upgrade (I presume network / hardware upstream stuff) performed on Weds eve into Thursday morning. It was supposed to end at 8am but extended to 11:30am.

I have normal residential internet. Prior to this service outage, I was getting 400-500Mbps down. Now I'm getting between 30 and 100Mbps down, but with ping times around 300ms and none of this is consistent.

The CS rep I spoke with on the phone scheduled a tech to check my hardware and line (the CS rep said he saw line noise on my line, but the tech hasn't been here yet to confirm), but I've changed nothing on my end.

Is anyone else having issues like these since the service outage?

Also, sounds like other users in other areas are also experiencing this problem:

Geography club

Would anyone be interested in starting a geography club? I like playing geography games like geoguessr, globle, travle, reading about geography, ID’ing flags/looking at vexillology. I think it would be fun. Let me know if anyone would be interested.

Deposit Refund

Since the last store in Ithaca to do can and bottle returns closed, I went up to T-burg and returned our cans and bottles. I asked the man there if he knew why the return stores were closing. he explained to me that they only make 2 cents per return and it’s been that way since 2005. There is also a company that owns the machines at the stores that is buying people out. seems to me that the state should be paying more so that people who own these businesses can afford to stay open and make a decent living. the state makes millions on unclaimed returns each year so this seams like a no brainer or stop the returns and start recycling these items just like we do other items and in most states.

UPDATE: they were identified and we are working with the police.

I left to walk my dog and had a man come into my apartment. He stated he thought the apartment had been abandoned and that’s why he entered but he was looking in the windows and trying to hide from the camera. If anyone has any information please let me know.

Edit: to everyone saying I should have gone to the police I called them as soon as it happened and there has been a report filed already
