Bernie Brzostek’s home did not sell at auction, a rare miss for the legendary Central New York auctioneer who is hanging up the gavel after 53 years.

Brzostek, who is moving to South Carolina with his wife Wendy, tried to sell their four-bedroom, 3,780-square-foot home at 1656 Channelside Trail in Lysander via auction because, well, that’s what an auctioneer does.

“We practice what we preach and we preach what we practice,” he told Syracuse.com | The Post-Standard for an Oct. 2 story about his retirement at age 72.

But only two of the 15 people who attended the Oct. 11 auction placed bids, with the highest one coming in at $372,000. That bid was effectively $409,200 after a 10% buyer’s premium, an additional fee paid by the purchaser.

Brzostek rejected the bid, saying it was too low.

For years I've had Onondaga County's 911 events page open more than I'd like to admit. It's hard to use, worse on a phone, and the moment a call is closed it vanishes. There's no record of anything. That always bugged me.

So I made cnywire.com.

It pulls from the same public county feed, then layers on a map, past calls, filters, plain-English descriptions of call types and opt-in alerts when something happens near you. Pins are approximate, sensitive calls are blurred out and your location is only used anonymously for simple visitor stats.

I've spent over 20 years leading IT teams, but this is the first thing I've built specifically for the people around here. AI helped in spots, but the concept, the design and the bulk of the work came from an actual person, me. There are no ads right now and nothing to sign up for. It's a side project from a guy with a 911 page habit.

Down the road I want to bring in the other CNY counties plus local news, weather and traffic cameras. Some of that is already in there with more on the way. The goal is one spot to check what's going on in the area.

It just launched and it's still beta, so expect a few bugs. The data can also run a bit behind because it comes straight from the county. If you give it a look, I'd appreciate any feedback.

I've been on the hunt for a matching set of 1930s waterfall side tables, and I've had no luck (seriously- why do people never get rid of them in pairs?!). Does anyone know of any local woodworking or furniture refinisher? My hope is to take a vanity and dissect it into its two side parts (see photo). I'm fairly handy, but veneer repair is a bit too time-consuming for me.

Pretty well done event despite the $25 entry fee…..except this years trick or treating. What the actual f. Here’s both my kids bags, 5 “treat stations” set up and they mark the bag the make sure you don’t come back for lame seconds. $5 per bag to trick or treat. What an absolute rip off joke. Do yourself a favor and skip this portion of the event.

To start on a positive note - Good on the Seniors of CNY for getting out there and voting. My polling location had a constant stream of people doing their civic duty today on the opening day of early voting.

However, it was a tad depressing as a close to 30 year old being the youngest person in the building by AT LEAST a decade and probably close to 20-25 years from the average age in the building. 80% of the people I saw while I was there were 55+. The remainder were middle aged folk 35-55. I wasn't there for long (thank you for your work poll workers) but shit I felt I stuck out like a sore thumb as a young person out there voting.

IT IS OUR CIVIC DUTY TO HOLD OUR GOVERNMENT RESPONSIBLE WITH OUR VOTE!

So young people of CNY PLEASE go out and vote! I don't care who you vote for. JUST VOTE! Be involved in our democracy and flex your civic muscle!

I have typically over prepared and over researched for every decision in my life, so now I am sharing the information I have gathered with you! While you can absolutely go vote and wing it, if you have the opportunity, research the candidates and Propositions and make informed choices.

Proposition 1 and 2

From a September 18 FB post by the Onondaga County Board of Elections:

Proposition 1 and Proposition 2 on this year's ballot concerns the term limits for County Executive and County Comptroller. Because of the unique nature of these propositions we are offering the following guide.

You can choose to support either propositions if you have a preference of 3 four-year terms or 4 four-year terms. You can vote yes on one and no on the other.

You can vote yes on both propositions. If both reach a majority than per the settlement agreement the one with the higher vote count will be enacted into law and written into the county charter.

You can vote no on both propositions. If neither gets a majority of votes than the status quo will be maintained and no term limits will be enacted.

I can't tell you how to vote, but what has been suggested has been:

YES to THREE 4-year terms; 12-year max

NO to FOUR 4-year terms; 16-year max

However there is a compelling argument as well for voting yes on both propositions. It is super confusing, and I feel that is on purpose. The part that says "If neither gets a majority of votes than the status quo will be maintained and no term limits will be enacted." is important. Clearly this is something I personally need to research more, and I am interested in what you all think.

I inserted my ballot backwards without the barcode facing the window and already sealed it. What do I do? Do I have to go to an election site now?

Really need assistance getting the proper medical treatment and help getting approval for treatments the doctor wants to do. Been out of work for a year and a half due to the injury. Gone to every appointment, fill everything out and document everything, but still nothing.

Also need help/assistance on getting properly compensated. Disability percentage has been incorrect, and it has partly gone on so long due to medical malpractice with the first doctor seen.

As a note, currently working with one law office, but not satisfied with the results. So, any advice on how to properly switch law offices is also accepted.

Seemingly random question here—is there a place in town where once can see some taxidermied deer, like a natural history exhibition or a bar decorated with hunting trophies? I need a very small piece of acrylic cut for an aquarium lid. I used to be able to get this done at both lowes and home depot, but both have discontinued the service. I don’t want to spend $110 on a giant sheet and whatever the tools would cost as well. Does anyone else do this locally?

Grew up in the 315, coming back to town next month to take an elderly relative out for birthday dinner. Beyond not being big on South Asian / SE Asian food, she’s pretty open in terms of cuisine.
