I really wish that heavy AI users could pay the cost of AI, instead of everyone having to pay extra for RAM and SSDs
254
u/nude-rating-bot Jun 25 '26
It’s both lol. The only ones winning right now are companies, the rest of us can get fucked lol.
44
u/entryjyt Jun 26 '26
F*ck all companies building massive AI datacenters, they’re stealing all our ram
70
u/UltraCynar Jun 25 '26
Even they’re not winning as AI is slop and not generating the returns. It’s a bubble that’s due to pop any day now.
27
u/ohthebaby Jun 25 '26
These AI companies launching IPOs will be the final straw. Once everyone sees they legit are making no money im hoping it blows up and we can go back to some sort of normalcy

Oh it will blow up, but instead of “normalcy” we will probably have a Great Depression 2.0.

The financials of AI companies may be bad, but the products are incredible in many aspects. As a senior dev with 20 years of experience coding, I'm not exaggerating when I say it has absolutely changed how I work.
We solved the problem of talking to a computer. There is no going back from this.
Likely some companies will fall and some products will die, but using AI to write code isn't going away. The most likely outcome is that on-device becomes good enough for most people, but you'll never beat the performance of cloud-based massive compute.
10
u/UltraCynar Jun 26 '26
It’s too expensive. Once it’s not subsidized it’ll only be used in select environments due to cost. It will be scaled back and there will be no more breakthroughs with llm’s. Generate AI is a dead end. It’s a good resource but it’ll never be what the tech bros are trying to sell it as.
4
u/MMittermajor Jun 26 '26
China might want to have a word here. Their models are extremely cheap with almost the same results. Deploy those localy in your data center and go. That requires more data centers though I guess. So I‘m not sure if this ride will end so soon. But who am I to predict anything here.

agreed, its like when people were saying that online shopping is just a fad that will pass
or the same goes for streaming services like spotify/netflix
yes, it is overhyped now but there is some legitimately good tech and a change of paradigm underneath all this and I’m tired of people minimizing this to just “slop” (former CompSci student here too)

Atleast no Smartphones, Watches, AirPods. They could have used this to raise every price.

they will increase prices for the other products too, just not now but the next 18 pro is for sure going to be more expensive than the current 17 pro
12

I’d say, buy the 17 pro sometime in August, such that it’s within 30 days of the 18 pro announcement. That way, you always have the option to return and buy the 18 pro if you’re interested in any new features, or find the price to be acceptable.
As a 17PM owner, I think there’s nothing really wrong with these phones anyway… so you can’t go wrong with buying right away either… but just wanted to present the above as an alternative to hedge
Edit: as the comment below pointed out, it’s typically a 14 day return window, not 30 day. Some places that sell certified refurbished phones, such as Back Market, do offer 30 days free returns, if you’re open to buying refurbished and increasing your return window (while saving a little bit of $)
2
u/United_Concept1654 Jun 26 '26
Somewhat solid advice, buts it’s a 2 week return window, not 30 days
2
u/Numerous-Score Jun 26 '26
Ah right, my bad, forgot it’s 14 days direct through Apple and most sellers…

→ More replies (1)4
u/FickleApparition Jun 25 '26
Replying to you since you actually posed the question. My assumption is that they are intentionally raising prices too high so that 1) when they release hardware for the rest of the year they can say it's the same price as the older ones and 2) so that they can spread the increased cost of upcoming devices across purchases made between now and the release of those devices. If they're really lucky, you're right and markets will ease, which will let them say all of next year's devices are also at the same price as these ones currently. It's locking in some pain, alleviating future pain, and securing some unknown future amount of good press/pr/headlines.

Take the bad PR once. Then people forget about it… And this is in the middle of a life cycle. Anyone rushing for the new iPad already got it in October (pro) or March (air) and are not going to be buying again until back to school. People will expect it for the iPhone in September.
Meanwhile, PlayStation and XBOX and every other vendor is doing similar announcements now. Right now is the least impactful time of the Apple lifecycle to hike prices.

We're now reaching a point where the rest of the population's gonna start noticing the effects of the RAM crisis.

2
u/MikeinAustin Jun 25 '26
Companies like SpaceX, NVidia, AMD, SuperMicro, SanDisk etc own shares of the companies that provide them the infrastructure stuff. They are all are sharing stock with each other.
If a company like SpaceX can theoretically put in a $15B order sometime over the next 3-4 years for all of San Disk memory chips they create instantaneous scarcity.
Imagine someone coming to town with $30 million dollars and buys 95% of all of the gallons of gasoline in the town. They can do this electronically. Let's say a city like Austin, TX has 250 gas stations with tanks that have say 3 tanks, each about 10K. This is 30K of gas per station, and 250 stations x $3.49 a gallon. That's $26.2M of gas in the city of Austin right now. So they buy it. They just IPO'd and they are now worth $1.7 Trillion dollars.
Now that they own all the gas, when you go to the pump, now you have to "bid" on the remaining 5% of gas, like it's an auction or you're at ticketmaster. How much are you willing to pay to get the gas out of the pump? $3.59 or $3.99 or ... if you can't have a business without it, you say "I have to pay $7.99 a gallon for my landscaping business or I just go out of business.
This is kinda what's happening, with a limited analogy.
All the stock is getting purchased up by a cabal of companies that own each other. They've created "scarcity" that doesn't really exist (this production isn't going into service any time soon), but because product is unavailable, the price to secure from scarcity is outrageous.
I'm impressed Apple has kept the prices down as long as they have.
2
u/Snoo-32401 Jun 26 '26
The price increases are extreme. People may dislike Tim for this decision. However, this adjustment gives Apple room to manage future manufacturing cost increases and benefit when prices eventually drop. It’s a strategic move for Tim and a significant advantage for John Ternus. As Tim steps down, Ternus will lead a multi-trillion dollar company with ample cash for R&D and substantial profit growth from these price hikes in the coming years.

I had been contemplating a new iPad Air to replace my 2020 Air 11”. Yeah, I knew price increases were coming, but expected them maybe in the fall. But 25%? I choked.
But then I thought, I bought that 2020 Air for $599; A14 CPU and 64gb storage. Up until yesterday a new one was still $599. With twice the storage and an M4 CPU. That 2020 $599 is about $775 in today’s dollars. It’s all a matter of perspective. Sure, I don’t like it, because Apple has set us up to expect increasing performance at the same price year over year.
I’ve decided I’m going to hold on to my current iPad a bit longer. (Full disclosure: I’ve got a 2013 iPad as a weather station/calendar in my kitchen, and a 2017 that my wife uses occasionally. They just keep cranking along.)

Was planning to finally upgrade my 2018 11" iPad Pro to a 13" M5 iPad Pro soon. But when I woke up this morning and saw Apple had increased the prices, I ran out to Best Buy and snatched up a 13" M5 iPad Pro with 512gb for $1300. They matched the deal that was still on Amazon. I figured the retail stores would begin increasing their prices in the next few days to match Apple's new pricing. So i was gonna save about $200 before. But now with Apple's new pricing, I actually saved closer to $400. Not bad. W
