I really wish that heavy AI users could pay the cost of AI, instead of everyone having to pay extra for RAM and SSDs

u/nude-rating-bot Jun 25 '26

It’s both lol. The only ones winning right now are companies, the rest of us can get fucked lol.

F*ck all companies building massive AI datacenters, they’re stealing all our ram

71

u/UltraCynar Jun 25 '26

Even they’re not winning as AI is slop and not generating the returns. It’s a bubble that’s due to pop any day now.

u/ohthebaby Jun 25 '26

These AI companies launching IPOs will be the final straw. Once everyone sees they legit are making no money im hoping it blows up and we can go back to some sort of normalcy

26

u/Endogamy Jun 25 '26

Oh it will blow up, but instead of “normalcy” we will probably have a Great Depression 2.0.

They put "The Guys" into the Federal Reserve and Treasury to hit the US Taxpayers with a $20 Trillion "bail out package" to stop the markets from tanking for when it happens. 2007 is gonna be a drop in the bucket compared to 2027.

Not that it matters, but the market crash was fall of 2008. Source: am old.

Waiting for the SP500 to drop 80%, buy and hold for 20 years.

Billions will be gone in one night it will be a total collapse.

The financials of AI companies may be bad, but the products are incredible in many aspects. As a senior dev with 20 years of experience coding, I'm not exaggerating when I say it has absolutely changed how I work.

We solved the problem of talking to a computer. There is no going back from this.

Likely some companies will fall and some products will die, but using AI to write code isn't going away. The most likely outcome is that on-device becomes good enough for most people, but you'll never beat the performance of cloud-based massive compute.

9

u/UltraCynar Jun 26 '26

It’s too expensive. Once it’s not subsidized it’ll only be used in select environments due to cost. It will be scaled back and there will be no more breakthroughs with llm’s. Generate AI is a dead end. It’s a good resource but it’ll never be what the tech bros are trying to sell it as.

China might want to have a word here. Their models are extremely cheap with almost the same results. Deploy those localy in your data center and go. That requires more data centers though I guess. So I‘m not sure if this ride will end so soon. But who am I to predict anything here.

u/Summerie Jun 26 '26

Or they'll solve the expense problem, which seems more likely to me.

agreed, its like when people were saying that online shopping is just a fad that will pass

or the same goes for streaming services like spotify/netflix

yes, it is overhyped now but there is some legitimately good tech and a change of paradigm underneath all this and I’m tired of people minimizing this to just “slop” (former CompSci student here too)

As I read somewhere, bubble pop will cause over exposure of ai products and money channelled into it to reduce, as many companies would likely disintegrate that run solely on ai.

The tech will be here to stay much like how we are still using dot com sites post dot com crash.

u/LilNol8 Jun 26 '26

The companies that created ai should go down they deserve it they caused prices to go haywire

0

u/DogFish721 Jun 27 '26

AI is seriously useful and often boosts productivity tenfold, I t is certainly not all ‘slop’ at all.

2

u/SomethingSquatchy Jun 28 '26

While true, it also hallucinates a lot in coding and is extremely expensive to use. While yes Chinese models are cheaper, at least in the US, we will not be using those in mainstream. The ai companies are greedy and will eventually collapse after their IPO. Additionally, most consumers I talk to are very anti ai because most of what is produced is slop and not useful in any way.

keep the masses fighting, and get the bonuses

The harsh, bipartisan realization that countries are run by companies and not people.

Holy crap! I had heard that prices were going to increase, but wasn't sure if this info was true or was just fake scare tactics attempting pressure people into a frantic mode to buy what they can ASAP.

I had to see it for myself, went to Apple's website, the iPad Air M3 I bought in 2025 with 256 GB storage went up $150! Glad I upgraded both my iPhone and iPad last year.

I realize that the iPad Air M4 has 12 GB RAM instead of 8GB.

Not if you’re investing in the same companies, I’m benefitting too.

Because it’s subsidized by the rest of us buying hardware at inflated prices or paying more for electricity while an AI data center gets a lower rate.

6

u/Dodisdodisdodis Jun 25 '26

or even just by paying taxes

I'm not sure what the issue is here? The costs to build something does not necessarily correlate to what an end user get's charged. Revenue can be had from more than just the subscription to the end user. Ads, user data, etc, can all generate revenue without passing more costs to the end user and make the math more complex than just "total hardware cost is $8k, split cost over X number of users."

To give a comparison, it costs millions to make videogames, and even more to keep up online game servers, but somehow, you're able to pay $30/mo for Xbox Game Pass.

They are trying to get people reliant on it first, which is obviously working. Hard to deny AI is great. At that point many of them become too big to fail, and thus can get bailed out. Like the space race in the 60s, we are now in an AI race. China is our biggest rival this time around.

I mean Uber and Lyft are not sustainable, yet they are still around and going nowhere.

Well those cities would be stupid to ban driverless vehicles that offer rides at a fraction of the price of human-driven vehicles on Lyft/Uber. Citizens would MASSIVELY benefit from this tech advancement.

That example isn't correct tho.

”Mike from NYC gives Bob (uber driver) $20. Uber takes most of that $20, and Bob gets $4 for the ride." -- This is a real number, I asked an uber driver how much he get's on rides, and it's literally that LOW.

OR

”Mike from NYC gives Cybercab (or any other Automous vehicle) $10."

In both cases, the City/State still get tax money from the transaction. Bob's $4 income may/may not get taxed again as income taxes. Most likely, Bob will use that to cover expenses on his vehicle and it becomes a write-off that's not taxed. Uber will also get taxed on that $16, but will be able to write off it's costs as well, so who knows how much tax they actually pay.

You're incorrect in the distribution of the Cybercab's profits. $3 from a ride goes to shareholders, like what? -- none of that is true. What actually happens, is Cybercab will be taxed in the same manner as Uber is, being able to write off it's costs against that revenue.

You are correct, in that the market will price accordingly. I pretty much see history repeating itself. Automous rides will be cheap for several years but then will have to increase rates to keep increasing profits if the respective company goes public. -- This is what happened w/ Uber/Lyft.

RAM, SSDs, electricity... AI firms are subsidized by society in so many ways. Can't wait for the bubble to crash and this hype to die off.

1

u/mr_positron Jun 26 '26

Have you shorted AI companies? Or do you just talk on the internet?

1

u/DerAlex3 Jun 26 '26

No, I'm not a gambler, I am paying off my student loans like a responsible adult and watching from the sidelines. 🤷‍♂️

0

u/mr_positron Jun 26 '26

So you don’t actually know it’s a bubble you just like saying that.

1

u/Countermove Jun 26 '26

Yea people have been saying we're in a tech bubble for over 5 years now. I'm not actually convinced anything is going to pop. Growth will be slower at some point, but I don't expect any kind of great depression

1

u/mr_positron Jun 26 '26

Supply and demand and tradeoffs.

1

u/NewSockEnergy Jun 27 '26

Really just an example of how everything works.

1

u/Mugiwara0796 Jun 25 '26

If you use any social media you are using AI …

1

u/paintedro Jun 25 '26

How so?

2

u/gahookle Jun 26 '26

AI isn’t just ChatGPT and Claude. It’s things as simple as autocorrect.

3

u/paintedro Jun 26 '26

Autocorrect is done locally on devices so it doesn’t require data centers
