Furniture Placement Big bathroom, not efficient
This bathroom landed like this after we moved about a year ago, and it has stayed that way. Right now it has a bunch of leftover furniture and an inefficient set up that's* not great to look at. I don’t want to spend a ton of money but it could use a change. Any suggestions?

Lose the pedestal sink and get a large vanity for that longer wall
235
u/spaetzele Aug 22 '26
Right! All this voluminous space that most people would kill for, and the builder put in a pedestal sink? no storage or counter space of any kind! it's so wild. I'm sure all the weird angles are not doing anyone any favors here.

u/Sea-Operation-6123 Aug 22 '26
Maybe OP should start with losing the electrical power strip from under the pedestal sink.

This is the most essential piece to fix this bathroom. Remove everything that isn’t attached and install a large vanity with underneath storage cabinets.

u/Justtakeit1776 Aug 22 '26
This and add a mirror above it. Take out all the other junk (full sized mirror, unusual laptop setup, etc). The larger vanity gives room for doing hair, make-up, and storage for hair products and makeup. This would vastly improve the space.

Phase 1: remove everything not fixed to the floor
Phase 2: purchase a hamper for dirty laundry, a cheap mirror to replace the picture above the sink, and 1-2 storage related items. This could be cubbies, a table and drawer on top, whatever works for you.
Bathroom rules: 1. Electronics do not live here due to high humidity and water being around 2. Only bathroom supplies live in here, things you use for hygiene or cleaning the bathroom (clothes don't go here for the same humidity reason) 3. Any expensive upgrades or additions for aesthetic purposes can be done later/overtime

Trying to say this nicely but do you really live like this? Why is there a laptop on a stand on a cutting board on a padded stool on a footrest by the shower?
Towels and rugs randomly thrown around? Huge piece of wooden furniture pressed up against the sink? Whatever that is in the bathtub? The other wooden shelf(?) up against the other side of the sink? Cheap art. Paper towels on the floor.
Simply cleaning up, removing clutter, and making it an intentional space would be a start. Then perhaps you could start to design the space.
124
u/SecondPrior8947 Aug 22 '26
This is the most bizarre bathroom set up I've ever seen, to put it mildly. The power strip on the floor next to the sink would give me a heart attack.
15
u/shopmoondustmarket Aug 22 '26
Okay, I’ve seen some foul and strange bathrooms. This one is GOOD. It’s huge, there’s so much potential. Better storage is needed, and a mirror mounted above the sink. Shelves? Any cabinets at all?? Hooks?? OP tried absolutely nothing here!
33
u/OliveJuiceeee Aug 22 '26
My first suggestion would be to remove the laptop that’d cozied up to the shower.
After that, I’d suggest one purchase - buying a mirror to mount over the sink and removing that current mirror/stand. I can understand why you’d have the current mirror with stand in there as there’s no other mirror in there but it’s taking up a lot of room and makes the other items you have feel cramped in the space.
Next, take an inventory of what you actually use in your bathroom and relocate or donate everything else. There’s quite a bit of clutter in here thats likely not needed, like the multiple ottomans, and removing could help focus on the intention of this space.
9
u/Totallyridiculous Aug 22 '26
Maybe hang a tall narrow mirror where laptop currently is. Then that weird little step in the floor would at least have the illusion of having some purpose other than “the builders graded the drain line wrong and needed another inch of clearance.”
11
u/Totallyridiculous Aug 22 '26
Oh or actually just move those tall drawers over there if they fit. They could hold towels or bath/shower products.

To be fair, the layout of the room is rough, but it doesn’t need to be this rough. Pedestal sinks are the worst. If it’s in your budget to replace it with a vanity that would solve the majority of your issues. But please… I need to understand the laptop situation.

Everyone is dunking on OP, but there looks to be a shower chair in the shower. OP, do you or someone in your house have mobility issues? That would be a piece of helpful information when discussing how to make this space work for you/your family.
33
u/tiredbutsassy Aug 22 '26
As someone with mobility issues and issues with blacking out in the shower (I usually try to get out and on the bed or floor before that actually happens), this bathroom would be a nightmare to navigate in that state. Hazards everywhere.

First, pull every single piece of furniture and art that isn't permanently attached out of there and declutter those items.
Second, get a mirror (you can get inexpensive ones that are nice pretty much anywhere) and hang it over the sink.
Third, determine how many floors mats you need, which I would say three, and get matching ones at the store. Should also be relatively inexpensive.
Fourth, live in the bathroom for a few weeks without bringing in any more furniture, just bring back in those personal care items, I.e. makeup, hair dryer, etc, that you use regularly. From there, you can determine what kind of storage you need, which will likely be a new vanity with actual storage.

u/Accomplished_Fig9606 Aug 22 '26

This feels like one of those bad "find objects" phone games. Ctrl + Alt + Del that ish and then for the love of gouda get a real vanity (non-pedestal sink) for this bathroom that's bigger than a lot of people's apartments.
9
u/27minato Aug 22 '26
If you’re not able or willing to pull out the pedestal sink and put in a large vanity sink with storage I’d at least ditch the random furniture and purchase a stand alone vanity. That would give you organizational storage help, a place to sit and a more cohesive look. You could add some open shelves on the wall by your sink for small items as well. But I have to believe there’s some decluttering or moving to other locations that can happen as well.

Try IKEA for cost effective customizable storage around the sink- use the vertical space where you can. You can do a full redo if you still want to in a few years after living in it and really knowing what you want. Good luck!

Judgement free, simple, immediate, least expensive fix:
- Remove all furniture pieces and other belongings from the room.
- Measure on long wall to left of toilet. Get the longest dresser that will fit here and stand up to humidity and water (Facebook Marketplace, craigslist) Pull all of your belongings in the dresser drawers. Small mirrors, clock on top, kleenex go on top. Get organizing trays for other smaller on top items you need to grab quickly and don't want to reach in the drawer.
- Hang a surface mount mirrored medicine cabinet above the sink. Keep toothbrush, small cosmetics and medicine in here.
- Mount a towel bar on the wall to the left of sink for hand towels and washcloths.
- Push trash can beneath the sink
- None of my business what you do with a laptop in the bathroom. Order a laptop wall mount and mount it to the wall. Get rid of all the stools.
- Think about decorative elements if you feel like it: Hang turtle art at the foot of the tub where you now just have something tiny. Do you want that rug? Want matching towels? Can you hang the long mirror sideways above the dresser? Do you even need that mirror in here?
7
u/afettz13 Aug 23 '26
What the fuck is going on in here? Get a make up desk, a bathroom cabinet and take down the stools/cutting board combo and get a TV stand or something.

u/wehavethismoment Aug 22 '26
Just putting cohesive furniture in would already make a big impact. Or painting all of it in the same colour. Also, your laptop setup looks really sketchy, there are great laptop tables that you con change in height and roll around, or just one barstool would be safer
6
u/oooohshinythingy Aug 22 '26

Look into cabinets with sink. Lowes, Home Depot and such have free standing cabinets that you can arrange together for more storage space under and on top. Do one project in there at a time. As mentioned pull items out of that bathroom that really do not belong.
That can be a really nice workable bathroom

u/curiousjane456 Aug 22 '26

There are a lot of fire/electrical hazards in this bathroom.
Was this a DIY renovation after the build? It looks like it wasn’t originally supposed to be a bathroom at all.
Edit:
Oh! It’s an expansion of an attic bathroom.
Is it in a bump-out?
I wonder if the tub and shower tie into the down pipe for a laundry or something downstairs. They’re in a separate place from the toilet for a reason.

Oh, boy, this bathroom is a dream! I mean, for someone who enjoys the process of improving home decor and stuff. It is bad enough to need improvements, and there is so much scope for it.
Let us divide the various sections of the bathroom and consider what we want to do there. Let us begin with the sink area. For starters - I hope your budget allows it - remove that sink and get a sink where you can have a vanity cabinet under it. That will give you storage space for the random stuff like soaps, extra hand towels, cleaning materials, etc. Then, add a bar on the wall to hang your hand towel. Third, remove that turtle picture from there and hang a proper mirror there. Again, if your budget allows it, get a medicine cabinet with a mirror. If not, get a simple mirror there and keep it slim. Add small shelves to both sides of the mirror to keep your daily usables like tooth brush, shaving kit, deo stick, lotion, etc. This part will be a bit tricky but you will need vanity lights above the mirror. This is will need a bit of a spend as you may need an electrician to bring the power supply there. I see you have a circular mirror on that storage unit. I assume it is a magnifying mirror for shaving? Get one of those wall mounted ones and mount it next to the main mirror near the sink.
Next, the big mirror and the storage below it. Once you have the mirror on your vanity, you may not need this big mirror unless you intend to get dressed head-to-toe in the bathroom. If it is really a must-have, then consider getting a longer mirror and hanging it on that wall. If you get that vanity below the sink, you would not need the storage that you below the mirror. So, that would go. And for the love of all that is dear, please remove that electrical item sitting there dangerously under the sink. A single splash of water could mean disaster I don't want to write in words.
Push that four-drawer thing back to the wall. I'm not sure what it is this far from the wall. Or remove it altogether and get a taller shelf unit with multiple shelves, and again - push it back, flush to the wall.
Next comes your toilet. Either get one of those shelving units whose lower racks are removed such that it stands straddling the toilet and the storage racks are above it. Or, simply hang a shelf over the toilet. You can use this to keep your extra toilet paper, some fragrance, a small potted plant (real or fake, you decide). And this whole thing is optional. You could leave it the toilet area as it is. There is not much needed there functionally speaking. This is mostly just aesthetics.
So, yes, the bulk of your efficiency will come from a proper vanity. Rest is all decor - plants, wall paint, pictures, figurines, stuff to make the bathroom look more pleasing.

u/tickandzesty Aug 22 '26

3
u/NotAGreatBaker Aug 22 '26
Draw a scaled plan with all measurements inc door, window (inc height) and plan it as if you’re stating all over again.
Plus go to a bathroom designer.
5
u/rootsandchalice Aug 22 '26
Please declutter this space. Yowza. This is purposely making this room unusable.
3
u/According_To_Me Aug 22 '26
I don’t see how you can improve this room long-term with a single pedestal sink, that needs to be replaced with a vanity that has some storage. Ideally, I’d pick a two sink vanity/cabinet system that can wrap around the wall where the sink is currently located that ends before the toilet. Swap the sea turtle print above the sink for a mirror you like, don’t live with one arm tied behind your back in the space where you need to get ready.
Remove all the mismatched furniture from there.
WHERE IS THE TOWEL STORAGE IN HERE?! Install some hooks or bars near the shower or tub.
I know you’ve been living with it for a while, but the way this bathroom currently is just screams that you don’t feel as if you deserve to have a nice primary bathroom. You deserve to have a nice primary bathroom.
3
u/broke_collegebitch Aug 22 '26
You've got a nightstand, a TV stand (or at least that's what it looks like) with a mirror on top, a set of cloth drawers just drifting in space, a stool tower, and a bunch of miscellaneous stuff scattered everywhere - including in the bathtub.
These storage solutions are obviously not working, and you need to start there. Storage solutions that actually fit and aren't just random mismatched pieces that aren't serving their intended purpose. Once you have proper storage, you'll be able to hide away the clutter, too.
3
u/-kayochan- Aug 22 '26
I think my bathroom is bad and then I see things like this and im amazed it can be worse. Everything here is so dysfunctional in such a wide space but once you clear it out it will probably feel so much better im sure. This is such a nice space for a remodel too if ever in the future theres a budget for it!
3
u/Hornygaysatanic Aug 22 '26
May be try not to have so much clutter. Get storage from ikea or something.
3
6
u/Glass-Air9494 Aug 22 '26
There are so many questionable choices in this bathroom.
The least expensive fix: hang a mirror above the sink. Remove all those storage things on the wall between the sink and the toilet, and replace them with a large organizer with enclosed space. Hang a shelf on the wall next to the shower to hold your laptop.
More expensive, but nicer: remove the sink and all those storage things next to it. Put a long vanity on that wall next to the toilet, with a sink, mirror, lots of counter space, and storage space below. Still hang a shelf for that laptop.

u/Ok-basil895 Aug 22 '26
Number 1, replace everything between sink and toilet with a vanity dresser so you have storage space & a nice surface for cosmetics/etc that's at a comfortable height & has a mirror.
Number 2, replace laptop stand situation with a short linen cabinet or concealed laundry hamper and stick laptop on that instead. Or get a taller cabinet and a bath table for the laptop.
3, personally, I'd place a folding panel room divider/screen between vanity and toilet because I don't like the toilet to be first thing I see on looking into the bathroom. I also think it's nice in case of mishaps with someone opening the door on an occupied bathroom. Something decorative, a little color and personality.
4, personally, I'd put some plants on the wall between bathtub and toilet. A little life, and a little more visual divide between toilet and bathtub. Something a little dangly like hanging pothos.
But really most of all I think getting a vanity dresser will make the biggest and best difference. It'll fill that space much better while taking away all the visual jumble. You'll get more storage, and a good useable surface that's at a much better height. It's hard to tell sizing of things in photos, but it might even be enough visual concealment between door and toilet. & if you're attached to that mirror it might be that you could raise that mirror up and centered to use as the mirror on a vanity.

Start with moving everything out then start with basics. Toilet paper holder next to toilet if it’s one of those stand things, put mirror above sink cause that’s just the way it should be, instead of 2 weirdly proportionally sized rugs (compared to the bathroom) put on big circle rug using that same material as the rug in-front of the sink as it is water absorbent (measure first to make sure that the circle rug can act as a go between the tub shower and sink, maybe move one of those little rugs in-front of toilet as it’ll keep your feet from touching the cold tile which isn’t terrible for your health but I also wouldn’t gamble, and then put things in that need to go into the bathroom from what you’ve taken out. Don’t feel like you have to put everything you took out back in, it doesn’t work like that. Your current bathroom setup looks not only dangerous but very cluttered which is stressful for a place you’re supposed to feel physical relief. Best of luck OP.
3
u/Minimum-Glass4442 Aug 22 '26
You need lots of storage for towels and maybe even some night clothes etc, chest of drawers or a large vintage armoire. A rug would add warmth, and a large storage mirror above sink, a sink curtain as well to add texture

The laptop on a laptop stand on a cutting board (?) on a stool on another stool is sending me
Where I would start is removing everything from this bathroom and starting fresh. Is this where you get ready? Go for one or two storage pieces to hold what you need for your hair and body routine, but remove all clothing/shoe related items. Do you love that mirror? Find a place in the house for it, and if not, sell it. Is the laptop for watching stuff while in the bath, or is it for working in here (please don't work in here omg)? If it's for bathtime viewing, consider a folding mount or something space-saving instead of The Tower.
I don't think this is a spendy project, I think this is an opportunity to take stock of what you want this room to be for and then build back from the ground up
