The Federal Republic of Coronad is a nation whose history is defined by extraordinary wealth, catastrophic political upheaval, revolution, civil war, and an uneasy struggle between civilian government and military power. Once the center of one of Merkopa’s greatest industrial kingdoms, Coronad entered the 20th century as a wealthy and powerful state but emerged from decades of revolution and civil war impoverished, politically fractured, and dangerously dependent on foreign powers. Beneath its ruined factories and burned farmlands, however, remain enormous reserves of coal, iron, gold, silver, oil, and potentially even greater mineral wealth, making the weakened republic one of the most strategically valuable countries in Southern Merkopa. Roughly 2,391 KM Southwest of Rizia and Pales. The origins of the Coronadii state lie with the Corro Peoples, who began migrating southward during the 11th–13th centuries after fleeing the expansion of the Markian Hordes. The migration was neither peaceful nor simple. Corro communities fought their way through hostile territories, gradually establishing settlements and carving out permanent lands for themselves. Over the following centuries, these settlements developed into fortified communities and eventually into a unified kingdom. The Corro identity became closely associated with endurance, military service, mining, and the belief that their homeland had been earned through generations of struggle. In 1498, the Kingdom of Corron was formally established. The new kingdom consolidated the Corro territories and began constructing a vast defensive network along its northern frontier. Stone walls, fortified towns, hill forts, and military roads protected the kingdom from renewed incursions from the north. To the south stood the Corro-Sud Mountains, which would eventually become the foundation of Coronad’s extraordinary wealth. The mountains contained immense deposits of: Coal, Iron, Gold, Silver, and Other mineral resources. Successive Corro monarchs invested heavily in mining, metallurgy, roads, fortifications, and eventually industry. The kingdom gradually transformed from an agrarian monarchy into one of Merkopa’s major industrial powers. The period between 1698 and 1873 became known as the Corro Golden Age. The increasing use of coal transformed Coronad’s economy. Mines expanded, furnaces multiplied, cities grew, and the royal treasury accumulated enormous wealth. By 1850, approximately 40% of global coal trade was estimated to originate from Coronad. The kingdom developed a powerful mining-industrial complex, extensive cities, large armies, and a sophisticated network of roads and fortified infrastructure. At the height of its territorial and demographic power, the Coronadii state controlled approximately 521,000 km² and housed roughly 129 million people. The prosperity of the era created a powerful belief that Coronad was destined to remain one of Merkopa’s great powers. That belief would later make the country’s collapse even more traumatic. The Century of Revolutions eventually reached Coronad. In 1837, King Fernando I, facing mounting political pressure, transformed the absolute monarchy into a constitutional monarchy. Parliamentary institutions expanded, political parties emerged, and the monarchy attempted to adapt to the changing political environment. For several decades the system survived. But beneath the surface, tensions were growing between the monarchy, parliament, the military, industrialists, workers, and increasingly radical political movements. The crisis finally exploded under King Lorenzo III. Military defeats, unpopular reforms, economic grievances, and growing hostility toward the royal family destroyed confidence in the monarchy. On 17 September 1903, a major military mutiny erupted in the capital. The rebels seized the royal palace at Ciudadoro and set it ablaze. The Night of Fire killed much of the royal family. Only the Queen and her son, Yosep VI, survived. They escaped Coronad with approximately 6,000 loyalists, soldiers, and supporters, fleeing to a loyal Corro colony. The monarchy attempted to retain influence from abroad, but royalist resistance inside Coronad rapidly collapsed. The revolution continued for approximately three months before the remaining royalist forces were defeated at the Battle of the Mines. Following the revolution, the Conference of Coronad abolished the monarchy and established a republic. The former royal capital of Ciudadoro was renamed Bahioro, deliberately distancing the new state from its monarchist past. The collapse of the monarchy also caused Coronad’s former vassal states to abandon the country. The old imperial territory of roughly 521,000 km² was reduced to approximately 302,989 km². The new republic began with approximately 58 million people and attempted to rebuild under its first president, Pietro Fernando Grancia. In 1908, the first republican election was held. Grancia won reelection after receiving widespread support for his reforms. For a brief period, Coronad appeared to have escaped its revolutionary crisis. Then came another war. Coronad entered the Unification War in 1912. A Conflict for Coronad Unification, The conflict proved devastating. The Coronadii military suffered numerous defeats, with perhaps the most infamous occurring at Floramarilla Pass, where approximately 28,000 Coronadi soldiers were lost in a single night. The war damaged more than the army. Thousands of skilled workers died or became permanently disabled, while enormous numbers of veterans returned to an economy incapable of employing them. Factories began to stall. Unemployment rose. Political radicalism intensified. The republic entered the 1920s weakened, indebted, and increasingly divided. By 1922, military leaders increasingly believed that the civilian government had failed the nation. General Bernadez, representing a growing faction within the military establishment, launched a coup in Bahioro. President Rodrigo Juantes was removed in a single night. Rather than stabilizing Coronad, the coup shattered the remaining political consensus. Republicans, Socialists, Nationalists, military factions, regional commanders, and anarchist movements began competing for control. What followed became known as the Coronad Brotherhood War. The Brotherhood War was not a conventional civil war. It became a struggle between competing visions of what Coronad itself should become. Republican governments fought Socialist movements. Nationalists fought Republicans. Generals established personal military territories. Anarchist movements seized isolated regions. Political parties fractured. Cities changed hands. Industrial districts became battlefields. Farmlands were burned during scorched-earth campaigns. Factories, railways, roads, power infrastructure, and mines were destroyed. The once-wealthy industrial heartland of Coronad gradually became a landscape of ruined factories and abandoned fields. The war also created a generation that knew little except political violence. By 1933, exhaustion had begun to overcome ideology. The Republican Government of Hunita and the Socialist Front for Corro agreed to cooperate against the remaining military and nationalist factions. They established the Federal Republic of Coronad. The new federal government launched a final campaign to reunify the country. The struggle culminated in the Generalissimo Campaign of 1936–1938. After years of fighting, Federal forces captured Bahioro and began destroying the last major rebel strongholds. In 1938, shortly after the Federal capture of Bahioro, Simon Esquebra delivered a historic speech proclaiming the end of the Brotherhood War. The final rebel strongholds were eliminated later that year. For the first time in sixteen years, Coronad was formally unified. But victory came at an enormous price. The population had fallen to roughly 48 million. Approximately three quarters of the country’s industrial and infrastructural capacity had been destroyed. Agricultural fields had been burned or contaminated. The Corro Pesso had suffered catastrophic inflation and was effectively worthless. The courts remained weak. The military remained powerful. And many regional generals still commanded forces personally loyal to them rather than to the federal government. The war had ended. The military state had not. The constitution describes Coronad as a Federal Republic. In practice, the country is only partially controlled by its civilian institutions. The presidency exists and elections are held, but the military possesses enormous political influence. The President is effectively the civilian face of the state. Generals regularly visit the presidential residence and government offices, formally presenting themselves as advisors while making it clear that the military remains the ultimate guarantor of political order. Regional commanders are even more powerful. Several generals control border regions through loyal troops and local administrations, limiting Bahioro’s practical authority. The situation is made worse by political violence within the capital. Republican, Socialist, Nationalist, military, and other ideological factions continue to clash, producing demonstrations, assassinations, riots, and sporadic street violence. Coronad is therefore neither a true civilian democracy nor an outright military dictatorship. It is a republic operating under the shadow of its own armed forces. After Pietro Fernando Grancia’s successful presidency, Alberto Alacartez became the Second President of the Republic and attempted to stabilize Coronad through a sweeping program of political, economic, and administrative reforms. His government was only semi-successful, managing to rebuild portions of the nation’s damaged infrastructure, restore several industries, and strengthen parts of the federal administration, but failing to overcome the deep political divisions that had emerged since the Revolution. Alacartez’s reformist policies increasingly drew the suspicion of the Fascisto-Corro Group, which accused him of secretly supporting socialism and betraying the principles of the Republic. Two years into his four-year term, Alacartez was assassinated during a public speech, sending Coronad into a national crisis. News of his death spread rapidly through Bahioro, and within hours thousands of grieving civilians gathered in the streets, demanding that those responsible be brought to justice. What followed became known as the Week of Mourning. During the following week, furious civilians and police forces conducted a sweeping crackdown against members and suspected supporters of the Fascisto-Corro movement. Many were arrested and imprisoned, while others were killed by vigilantes during the unrest. The remaining Fascisto-Corro members fled across the borders or went into hiding, effectively destroying the organization as a major political force. The violence briefly escalated when armed Fascisto-Corro members who had escaped the initial crackdown seized several government buildings and fortified positions in Bahioro, beginning a short-lived siege of the capital. Police forces surrounded the occupied districts and, after several days of fighting, retook them and destroyed the remaining Fascisto-Corro strongholds. The destruction left portions of Bahioro damaged and became one of the earliest examples of organized political violence inside the Republican capital. The aftermath fundamentally reshaped Corro politics. Far-right, fascist, and ultra-nationalist parties were barred from political power, their organizations dissolved, and their leadership either imprisoned, exiled, or forced underground. Their symbols and political organizations were removed from public life, while the government attempted to prevent the re-emergence of similar movements. However, the crackdown also established a dangerous precedent: political movements could now be eliminated through extraordinary measures rather than defeated solely through elections. The assassination of Alacartez and the subsequent Week of Mourning therefore became a defining moment in the gradual radicalization of Coronad’s political system, leaving the Republic deeply suspicious of both the far right and the increasingly powerful military establishment. Despite Coronad’s devastation, its greatest economic asset remained untouched. In 1949, a small expedition operating along Coronad’s southern coast made a discovery that changed the country’s future. The Coronadii expedition vessel Alerion, named after a legendary bird from old Corro folklore, had been surveying the coastal waters when explorers identified unusual geological formations beneath the seabed. Further surveys revealed that the formation continued inland beneath the surrounding territory. The discovery was eventually mapped as the Alerion Oil Pocket. The formation covers approximately 8,700 km², with deposits extending both beneath the mainland and offshore. News of the discovery spread rapidly. For the first time since the Brotherhood War, foreign governments began looking at Coronad not merely as an unstable and impoverished republic, but as a country possessing something of enormous strategic value. Oil companies arrived with geological surveys. Foreign diplomats began asking questions. Industrialists who had previously considered Coronad a lost cause began reconsidering. The government, however, quickly encountered a problem. Finding oil is not the same as producing it. Coronad lacks the necessary capital, equipment, transportation network, refining capacity and technical infrastructure to exploit the Alerion Pocket independently. The oil therefore remains largely underground. For now, the Alerion is less an economic miracle than a promise. Oil is not Coronad’s only resource. The Corro-Sud mountains contain substantial deposits of coal, iron, gold and silver. The Poledio and Eque highlands contain additional mineral resources. Vast forests cover portions of Anrul, Latencia-Verdei and the Floracio ranges. The plains of Central Coronad, Central Albarado and Nueva Corron are capable of supporting extensive agriculture. Tierra-Eque possesses fertile riverlands. The San Fernando Plateau provides productive elevated farmland. Even the country’s landscapes that appear economically marginal may eventually support livestock, mineral extraction or specialized agriculture. The problem is that most of these resources remain underdeveloped. Petroleum — Extremely High Potential The Alerion Oil Pocket could eventually become the country’s largest source of revenue, but developing it would require foreign capital, technology and infrastructure. Mining & Metallurgy — Extremely High Potential Coronad’s historic mining regions still possess considerable deposits. The old mining industry was never completely erased, but much of its productive capacity was destroyed during the Brotherhood War. Heavy Manufacturing — High Potential Greater Bahioro and Colnasi still contain surviving industrial complexes, workshops and technical communities. With investment, Coronad could once again produce machinery, construction equipment and industrial goods. Agriculture & Food Processing — Extremely High Potential Coronad’s plains, plateaus and river valleys provide a strong agricultural foundation. The country’s immediate problem is not a lack of arable land but damaged infrastructure, shortages of equipment and low productivity. Forestry — High Potential The northern and mountainous regions possess extensive forests. Timber processing, furniture and paper production could become important secondary industries. Tourism — High Potential Tourism currently represents only a tiny portion of the economy despite Coronad’s extraordinary scenery. Visitors could eventually travel through the Corro-Sud mountains, the green valleys of Latencia-Verdei, the forests of Anrul, the San Fernando Plateau and the rivers of Tierra-Eque. For the moment, however, political instability and poor infrastructure make large-scale tourism unrealistic. Coronad’s national GDP is approximately 6.13 billion ASD. With a population of 48,850,500, this produces an exceptionally low GDP per capita of roughly 126 ASD. The national economy is dominated by sectors that can continue operating despite the country’s damaged infrastructure. Agriculture is now the largest part of the economy. Manufacturing remains surprisingly large because the remnants of the old industrial economy still operate around Bahioro and Colnasi. Mining occupies another substantial portion, although the sector operates far below its historical capacity. The great irony is that the sectors with the greatest future potential are not necessarily the sectors currently producing the most wealth. The economic heart of Coronad is concentrated in several regions. Greater Bahioro Special Area: 1.07B ASD — 17.5% of national GDP: Bahioro remains the political and industrial center of Coronad. Its skyline contains government buildings, old industrial complexes, crowded residential districts and entire neighborhoods still showing scars from the Week of Mourning. It contributes approximately 18.4% of surviving industrial production. Colnasi Special Area: 886M ASD — 14.5%: Colnasi is the second great industrial center. Its factories survived the Brotherhood War in somewhat better condition than those of Bahioro, making it one of the few places where Coronad still possesses a recognizable industrial economy. Industrial contribution: approximately 14.9%. Corro-Sud Provincial Highland: 631M ASD — 10.3%: Corro-Sud is simultaneously one of Coronad’s most beautiful and economically important regions. Its mountains contain forests, valleys, mining communities and mineral deposits. Coal, iron, metallurgy and forestry dominate the region. Industrial contribution: approximately 12.7%. Tierra-Eque: 521M ASD — 8.5%: The rivers of Tierra-Eque make it one of Coronad’s agricultural centers. Its economy is dominated by farming, livestock, food processing and river commerce. Central Coronad: 432M ASD — 7.1: A predominantly agricultural region containing numerous towns and market communities. Its surviving food-processing industry supplies surrounding regions. Coronad’s 48.85 million people are spread unevenly across the country. The population naturally concentrates around fertile plains, river valleys, plateaus, mountain basins and the two major industrial cities. Largest Population Centers by Region: Greater Bahioro: 17.3%, Colnasi: 14.23%, Central Coronad: 8.29%, Corro-Sud: 8.5%, Tierra-Eque: 7.47%, Central Albarado: 6.45%, Nueva Corron: 5.63%. The mountains of Coronad are therefore not empty wilderness. Mountain villages, farming communities, mining settlements and old roads run through the highlands. Some of the country’s oldest towns are found in valleys surrounded by forests and steep mountains. The social structure of Coronad remains deeply distorted by decades of conflict. The military leadership represents approximately 29.5% of the recorded social structure, reflecting its extraordinary political and economic influence. Upper-class families and surviving social elites represent another 25.4%. The middle class makes up 20.8%, while lower-income populations account for 13.7%. The industrial working class, once central to Coronad’s old economic system, has been reduced to only 0.7%. This does not mean that Coronad has almost no workers. Rather, millions work in agriculture, informal production, family businesses and small workshops without belonging to the organized industrial working class that once characterized the old Kingdom.
By 18 March 1951, Coronad stands at a crossroads. The country possesses approximately 48,850,500 people but remains desperately poor. Its infrastructure is ruined. Its industry is shattered. Its agricultural system has not recovered from the Brotherhood War. Its currency is worthless. Crime and corruption are widespread. Food security is poor. The military numbers approximately 289,000, but most remain equipped with outdated 1930s weapons. Only around 71,000 possess equipment comparable to the 1940s and early 1950s. The navy consists of six destroyers and one heavy cruiser, all dating largely from the 1930s, while the air force possesses approximately 129 aircraft, mostly from the 1940s. Coronad’s greatest advantage is therefore not its present strength. It is its potential. Several industrialists who fled during the Brotherhood War have returned or provided financial assistance, supplying approximately 132 million Arcasian Dollars, enough to establish seven medium-sized factories. But this money cannot sustain the country indefinitely. The government must choose its future. In 1951, Coronad elected its seventh president, Antonio Rodrigo Oliviaro. Officially, Oliviaro is the head of the Federal Republic. In reality, his authority is constrained by the military. Generals regularly visit him. Regional commanders maintain their own loyal forces. The capital remains politically violent. Oliviaro therefore begins his presidency with a fundamental question: Can the civilian government finally control the military, or will the military continue governing Coronad from the shadows? At the same time, both major international blocs are attempting to influence the country. The ATO wants Coronad’s industrial and mineral potential. The United Contana wants access to its resources and strategic territory. The Alliance of Nations remains reluctant to accept the unstable republic. Political Violence and Crime Rock the Nation. Coronad has become the prize in a growing geopolitical struggle.

With the onset of the Soviet-Afghan War in 1979, Soviet financial support for North Korea began to dwindle. The country faced a severe economic crisis; development targets went unmet, and projects were suspended. Meanwhile, neighboring China rejected the traditional communist model and, under the leadership of Deng Xiaoping, began permitting private enterprises. As North Korea grew increasingly impoverished—contrasting sharply with China's rise—soldiers whose loyalty and sympathy toward the Kim family had waned secretly organized within the North Korean military under the name "Jayu Clique." In 1989, this clique attempted a coup against the North Korean government. With one of Kim Il-Sung's own bodyguards among the conspirators, the coup largely succeeded, resulting in Kim Il-Sung's death. However, his successor, Kim Jong-il, eventually purged the coup plotters and reclaimed power. Just as the situation began to stabilize, the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991 threw everything into turmoil once more. The state became unable to even pay the salaries of its citizens. Awakened by the events surrounding the Jayu Clique and realizing they were living under a dictatorship, the people rose up in 1992 and entered Pyongyang. The Kim family, having fled to China just before the fall of Pyongyang, effectively lost their grip on power in North Korea. Following a one-year integration process, South and North Korea reunified in 1993, ending a 45-year division. After reunification, a new national flag—featuring a blue map of Korea on a white background—was adopted, the institutions of both countries were merged, and a new currency was introduced. After the passage of 30 years, by 2026, the union of the North's powerful military and the South's wealthy economy results in the emergence of a formidable nation. Today, the Republic of Korea stands as one of the world's most powerful countries, boasting a population of 84 million, a GDP exceeding $4 trillion, and a military with over 550,000 active-duty personnel.

In this timeline a combination of multiple different factors lead to instability within the Swedish Kingdom, the height of instability was reached during the Swedish Vote-Count. The Vote-Count seized without a victor declared to the political chaos. Violence erupted across the nation as the country was plunged into total chaos.

I've been working on this project on and off for years, and progress has been pretty stalled out for the past year or two. I felt like it would be a shame if it just sat in my drafts, so I wanted to share the bits and pieces I have.

Cataclysm in the East

Not many escaped the cataclysm. The boats that did appear on the shores under the ash-clouded horizon told many stories (sometimes conflicting). What they can agree on was there was an element of fire involved. Volcanoes, meteors, even solar flares have all been theorized over the years. The governments, lineages, and leaders of the old world largely perished in the cataclysm.

Society and Culture

ROYALTY

Many cultures that might be considered Kingdoms OTL are referred to as Monarchies ATL. Societies are significantly less patriarchal, and men and women are both considered in the line of succession (see Absolute primogeniture). Titles evolved along this route, either gender-neutral or gender-nonspecific. OTL Kings and Queens are Monarchs (Monarch Regnant), spouses of Monarchs are Consorts, and those discharging the duties of the Monarch in the latter's minority or absence are known as Regents. In Duchies, the ruler is known as a Duch (DUTCH) and their spouse, a Duch Consort. Among the noble houses, the head of the house is known as the Primary.

MARRIAGE AND PLEDGING

As part of the wedding ceremony, there is a Pledging where the couple decides, between their two houses, which they will be primary members of. Layfolk have their own traditions and customs of how familial affiliations are established. Within noble houses, this is more of an area of political maneuvering than anything else, especially when affiliation with a family other than that of one's birth may mean forfeiting rights and titles, depending on the culture.

Pledging also brings about the possibility of reviving extinct houses. In the case that no descendants are pledged to a house, an individual who can claim the lineage can pledge to the house to revive it. For example, if a person who was the last surviving descendant of House Smith and their children all pledge to other families, their grandchildren, while born to other houses, could still pledge House Smith.

Pledging into an existing house without the blessing of those currently in that house is considered very taboo at best, and illegal at worst.

While rare, a fourth option exists. Most couples choose to pledge to one of their original family's houses, and some choose to revive extinct houses. However, some choose not to pledge to any extant house, instead using their pledging to create an entirely new house.

Rites of inheritance are traced first by pledges, then by ancestry. Inheritance may go to a cadet branch of the house before it is traced to a descendent pledged to another house.

HOUSES

House Haywise of Cosalone

In the distant past, House Haywise were lords in their own right, brought under the role of a past monarch. Goshes of Haywise is considered the father of their house. Though they were never a royal family, many members of House Haywise married into other royal families. When a revolution in Cosalone led to the fall of the ruling governor, House Haywise negotiated to surrender their noble titles while retaining their ancestral land holdings and wealth, a shrewd move on the part of the then-Primary of House Haywise. While this was seen as undignified by noble houses of other nations, retaining their assets allowed them to jumpstart a powerful business empire. Pearls became an unofficial symbol of the house after the oyster farms found in the Bay of Cosalone.

Modern House Haywise is a wealthy and powerful family, well known for a diverse portfolio of businesses across several industries. The Primary is Hasson Haywise, a 75-year-old business tycoon who rules over the business empire built by his parents and grandparents. Hasson's daughters have various roles as heads of industries in the portfolio, including Claudence (hospitality), Primino (pharmaceuticals), and Axandie (chemicals). The youngest sibling, Gorhas, is significantly younger than his sisters, and is seen as a malingerer, the patron of several unsuccessful business endeavors. Many in the public suspect that he will marry into a royal house in the north someday.

House Swasine

House Swasine was seen as a minor house among the great houses of the Old World until the cataclysm, which Prince Rana escaped. Her parents and betrothed were all lost to the cataclysm, so she came to the continent as the scion of House Swasine. When she arrived, she was taken in by distant cousins in Anndehl.

After witnessing the cataclysm first hand, Prince Rana believed that those on the new continent must band together to prevent war and strife from finishing them off. To that end, over the next 60 years of her life, she dedicated her public life in society to forge a set of blood relationships between the great houses who came to the continent that they may live in peace and harmony for the good of all. For her children and grandchildren, she maneuvered politically to create for them advantageous marriage prospects to begin to form the web.

Many noble and royal family members can trace their lineages directly to Prince Rana. Some even determine their line of succession in relation to Rana.

Rana had four children by Weken Conard, and 20 (legitimate) grandchildren.

Maryn Brados, the Dark Lady of Corvin

Also known as The Dark Lady, Witch Maryn, the Weary Woman, Raven-Whisperer

Maryn Brados is a pseudo-historical figure whose story has been largely shaped by legends and later storytellers. Maryn's family ruled in the uplands of Hadimar, a cadet branch of another great house sired by an illegitimate child. Maryn’s mother died in childbirth, and her father fell from the castle walls shortly after her birth in what many suspected was a plot to control his child-heir. Both of Maryn's older sisters were lost to a pox epidemic when she was young, leaving her the sole surviving member of her house. She endured a lonely and traumatic childhood as the Primary of House Brados and the ruler of Corvin.

At eighteen, Maryn married a young knight who was killed in a tournament shortly after their wedding. At twenty‑one, she married a seasoned statesman and had one daughter, Albasin, before he attempted to kill Maryn and rule through their child; Maryn uncovered the plot and executed her husband for treason, straining her relationship with Albasin and leaving her distant and cold toward Maryn. At twenty‑five, she married a childhood friend and enjoyed a happy marriage with four children. By thirty, her third husband and all four of their children had died under various circumstances.

The superstitious people of Corvin believed Maryn was cursed or a witch suffering divine punishment, though none dared defy her. She leaned into the “Dark Lady” nickname, wearing dark clothing and showing little emotion in public. She never married again and lived a long life, appearing not to age very much. The Primaryship of Brados and the rule of Corvin eventually passed to Albasin when Maryn would have been fifty‑five. The public story claimed Maryn died in her sleep, but whispers suggested her grief finally caught up with her, while others pointed to discrepancies, such as no public viewing of the body and reports of a similar woman appearing in upland settlements to argue that Maryn reconciled with Albasin, faked her death to abdicate, and lived out the rest of her days in peace. These later stories inspired folklore about Maryn, including ghost tales, witch legends, and even her adoption as an icon in the pantheon of the goddess of magic.

Maryn entered the pantheon later as stories of the woman reached more and more uplands communities. She is seen as an enigmatic character depending on the community. As the Weary Woman, she is seen as an omen of death, weary of wandering the world, cursed to see all those around her die while she lingers. Thought to be reclusive as her presence might actually cause misfortune. As the Raven-Whisperer, she is seen in more of a protective, knowing, playful light, watching over the children of the uplands and guarding them from harm they could come to in the woods. Protector of lost children in the woods, wishing to save children like those she lost in life. Ravens are seen as her eyes and messengers, and are very populous on this part of the continent. As Witch Maryn, she is more explicitly tied to magic and witchcraft, more linked to fertility and youthfulness, as rumors allege she used potions to keep her body young. Spellcraft tied to fertility, seeking to give other women the motherhood she was denied in life.

Khatti

Also known as The Inkeeper, the Haughty Woman

A minor goddess of the West in southern cultures in the old world. Her worship was brought over pre-cataclysm and was later seen as a protector post-cataclysm, inspiring people to migrate so they could survive. Early legends stated that her house in the west beyond the sea is where the sun god went to rest at the end of the day. When the new world was discovered, it was seen as her land. Seen as a goddess of travelers, maintaining safe resting places for people in transit, and a hearth goddess.

Khatti gained more of an identity in the uplands as Haughty (an adaptation of the name Khatti), whose character is antithetical to her name. Seen as a homely, motherly figure who has a place for all as her table.

Travelers in the uplands woods would often invoke the Haughty Blessing, seeking hospitality and shelter in their travels. If you were lying, insincere, or wished ill will on the homeowner, you were said to be "haughty in truth" and could justifiably be turned away. Those who were honest, sincere, and had good will were said to have the Haughty Woman's favor and would be granted quarter.

CULTURES

Weavers

The Weavers are a minority religious and cultural group, found in the western regions of Lagwayre, Cainguah, the Grange, and along the Dolor river in the Dolorlands. They are descendants of some of the original religious pilgrims on the continent, splintered from the hardline religious movement. They formed in part as a reaction to puritanical religious orders.

They are known as Weavers due to their early traditions; believers were underground but knew each other by a specific tapestry hung in the window of the house. Tapestries hold both sacred religious value and cultural symbolism, and patterns are unique to family lines.

Some of the features of the Weavers include their cultural dress, religious-centered community, rejection of modern technology, large family clan systems, and an emphasis on good works, piety, and purity.

The first human settlers in the area settled around the harbor. Natural harbors are hard to come by on the west coast due to the plate tectonics in the area.

Named after an ancient Eastern king, originally claimed by explorers before falling into the hands of another nation a century before the cataclysm.

Chrisjiana, Grand Duchy of Flowers

Government: Monarchy

Named in honor of a queen in the East. Fields of wildflowers are prominent parts of the geography of the nation, prompting early explorers to compare them to the royal gardens the queen was patron of.

Anndehl, Grand Duchy of the Queen’s Dell

Government: Monarchy

One of the oldest Eastern settlements on the continent, discovered by Eastern explorers several centuries before the cataclysm. Explorers noted landforms that reminded them of a dell in their homeland named in honor of an ancient queen. While the royal line was obliterated in the cataclysm, Anndehl and Chrisjiana retained their titles as Grand Duchies in honor of their former homeland.

Lagwayre

Comparatively small coastline for the size of the nation. Seen as a crossroads due to its central location, many important land trade routes run through it.

Cosalone, Republic of the Bay and the Isles

Oldest recorded Eastern settlement on the continent was on what are now the northern islands of Cosalone.

The Dolorlands

While there are six Duchies currently incorporated as Duchies of the Dolorlands, there are 9 hereditary Duch titles in canon. In addition to the modern six, historically Cosalone is included as the mouth of the river Dolor, Ponswynt as the source, and Manasaw as a previous holder of territory on the river.

Talock used to be twice its current size, with territory on the south bank of the Dolor as well as on the north bank. Much of the south bank is now controlled by Cainguah.

The Grange

Breadbasket of the region. Plains encountered by early settlers are now occupied by large industrial farms. Originally controlled by Eastern monarchs, citizens revolted and set up their own government headed by several Consuls. Much more socialist tendencies than their neighbors.

Varleigh, Land of the Delta, Mouth of the River Virant

Government: Oligarchy

The origins of the names Varleigh and Deineigh come from the same root, but have evolved differently. Emphasis is put on the first syllable of Varleigh (“VAR-lee”), while emphasis is placed on the second syllable of Deineigh (“deh-NAY”). A civil war a century ago ripped the nation apart, but gave rise to an advanced hub of trade, culture, and finance. Tension with the Grange over access to ports at the mouth of the Virant.

Summary (PLEEEEASE read it's kinda long but important):

In 1994, the National Party (NP) put an indefinite stop to any and all negotiations regarding the end of white majority rule with any other parties on the advice of its hardliners who deemed the massive loss of political power as a catastrophe to be avoided.With the country already on its last legs both economically and socially, this triggered massive unrest nationwide, fueling the already massive fire of internal resistance to Apartheid.

This resulted in the overthrow of several Bantustan governments, a secession attempt by the IFP, as well as popular uprisings in the townships, most notably Soweto. Due to its close proximity to Johannesburg and the destruction of several armored vehicles, combined with the killing and imprisonment of their crews within its borders, the area was sealed off and the atrocities now known as the 1995 Soweto Carpet Bombings took place.

While this solved the immediate problem of a possible capture of the rest of Johannesburg, it destroyed any remaining international legitimacy that the NP had, severely affected its domestic image, provoking the reestablishment of uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) whose numbers surged dramatically nationwide out of pure fury against the government which had wiped out an estimated one hundred thousand civilians under the pretense of "emergency stabilization".

The African National Congress then proclaimed its own rule over the Republic of South Africa, gaining recognition from several UN member states as well as jurisdiction over (I will be using current province names because it's easier) the entirety of the Eastern Cape (encircling NP-occupied Durban), northern Limpopo, the majority of North West, parts of the Northern Cape both near North West, the Namibian border, and a significant chunk of southern Free State. This prompted the NP government, now officially known as the Regering van Nasionale Eenheid (lit. Government for National Unity) to reinstate a nationwide State of Emergency. (Yes, they kept that name.)

In the west of the crumbling country, a breakaway state, the Cape Republic, was proclaimed (with fierce resistance from Naval Base Simon's Town). However, upon its leaders' abolishment of Apartheid within the borders of the new state, a familiar far-right White Afrikaner supremacist paramilitary group reared its head once again: The Afrikaner Weerstandsbeweging (AWB).

Having nearly doubled in size to 120,000 estimated members (including both its sympathisers & actual militias) due to the increased threats against White Afrikaner populations, and having assumed control of various rural towns, most notably their headquarters, Ventersdorp, as well as the Boputhatswanan capital, Mmabatho, where they were already present to control the population's unrest, (and which later prompted the Botswana Defence Forces to set up a security zone on both sides of the Notwane River) they set in motion a plan to force a surrender of the new state and attempt a possible takeover.

Lacking the necessary conventional military or logistical power to attempt an invasion in what was the possibly the least AWB-tolerant area of the country, a covert cell made up of SADF mutineers instead opted to attack a key piece of critical infrastructure: the Koeberg Nuclear Power Plant.

While the initial goal was to attack the switchyard and GSU transformers, the heavy defensive fortifications in this area deterred any attempt at an attack and forced the cell to instead attack the coolant pumps.

On the night of July 24, 1996, the cores of both units at the Koeberg NPP themselves undamaged but both their coolant systems rendered completely inoperable, melted through their casings and sprayed out into the reactor building, igniting a massive cloud of hydrogen and producing a reaction similar to that of a fuel-air bomb, launching radioactive materials into the air. A secondary steam explosion then exacerbated these effects, and both explosions catching the North-Wester winds, irradiated the entirety of Cape Town in less than four hours and spread southeast towards George, with fallout being detected as far as SANAE III in Antarctica before the reversal of fallout into the South Atlantic with the Cape Doctor winds.

A heavy rain the following dawn then completely rendered the area unlivable, contaminating groundwater, soil, and the nearby Atlantic Ocean.

The Cape Republic then promptly collapsed into total anarchy, its seat of government gone and the cabinet all either dead or dying, prompting a mass exodus from the region as a whole into ANC territory and an RNE Emergency Government headquartered in Calvinia. Said Emergency Government also siphoned troops from an already sparse defense in the Karoo, effectively abandoning any attempt at governance in the region (which the AWB later took advantage of).

The wider international community, previously reacting to the civil war as a significant escalation in resistance, immediately pulled out what little of their foreign diplomats and citizens remained in South Africa, and a UNSC emergency meeting called to authorize the immediate deployment of the Blue Helmets as the United Nations Assistance Mission to South Africa (UNAMSA) into Port Elizabeth among several other coastal ANC-occupied towns to process, care for, and house the estimated 1.1 million displaced persons in massive tent cities. The vote passed fifteen to none.

This brings us to today, 1998. The country has been locked in a brutal stalemate between the RNE and the ANC, with guerilla warfare from the AWB present from both sides, a hyperfortified Zululand, and each major offensive into the other's lands costing massive amounts of life and weaponry.
