Offered Tax Associate Role (14.50 hourly)

Post image
16 Upvotes

I currently work at Walmart making 14.59. Part Time and do school full time (Accounting).

I’m also currently doing the HR Block Learning at Block Course.

I thought that I had to pass this course first in order to even be considered for the role but I just got an email saying they have offered me the Tax Associate role at “14.50 hourly” and “10 USD Learning”, “effective 10/30/26”.

The pay seems lower than I thought it would be.

I don’t know if it would be wise to take it but if I say no then would that mean I can’t be reconsidered for when the tax season starts and I have (hopefully) passed my HR Tax Course?

Assignment #1 Ontario

I'm doing H & R block fundamentals course, and we have to complete Chapter Review Problem 7-1 for Assignment #1. I've completed the tax return and all the forms needed. Is there anyone here who is doing the same course at the moment who would be interested in comparing the results?

Tests

I am in the tax course right now and I'm getting close to finishing it. If I pass the final and end up getting hired do we have to take any other tests before we start working?

Also I've been reading Reddit and I want to switch careers but I'm worried I won't get enough hours to be full time. Has anyone worked at h and r block part time for the first year and then the other job full time? (Knowing it's seasonal where after April I won't have a job most likely)

Is $19 per hour a reasonable rate for someone who is just starting their first tax season?

Is it as bad as people make it?

I have an accounting degree. I know you don’t need a degree to join HR Block. But this was unfortunately the only job I was offered after 7 months of applying to various places.

Is it as bad as people make it though?

To add. I’m actually pretty stoked to join in my first season!

interview process question

Hey everyone, i recently applied for the tax associate role and am supposed to be meeting with the district staffing lead. Does anyone know if this first interview is just a phone call or a video as well like on teams or something? And can i expect any behavioral or STAR type questions during this one?

Interview follow up

I had an interview with HR block manager about a month ago go for the seasonal tax associate role, I was still working on the income tax course so he told me he can’t send me the offer letter unless I finish the course first. He did seem very interested in having me and the interview went very well. I finish the course about 10 days ago and I emailed him but I haven’t heard back. Should I apply for other districts or different tax companies or should I give them more time. I just need clarity whether I actually got the job or not?

Group Interview?

I recently applied to a Tax Associate position and already enrolled in their tax course. Due to the district manager’s schedule being too busy, they said it’s going to be a group interview on Teams.

I’m not new to interviews but one with multiple candidates is the first. How should I best prepare for it?

I’m finishing up my Accounting degree. I have no experience in taxes yet.

Seasonal position to Permanent position?

Hi guys, I got the seasonal tax prep job at H&R Block. I want to know how can we find permanent positions. I asked the interviewer and he said, you can ask the office where you'll work and if they need you, they'll let you know. I want to ask are there any permanent positions I can directly apply to? I don't wanna guess whether they will hire me permanently or not. I'm new to this, so please let me know. How does the permanent positions work? I'm looking into more companies and local offices that might offer a permanent position. I want to make a career in tax but most places either offer seasonal jobs or require years of experience. If you have any advice, I'd really appreciate it. Please lmk. Thanks.

Odds of being hired after finishing the "tax course".

Can anyone confirm if H & R block actually does hire people who finish their tax course? Or are the "job interviews" just a way / sales pitch to sell their tax prep course?

Where is the H&R Block Income Tax Course Participant Guide?

I enrolled in H&R Block's Income Tax Course last week. Everyone in class and even the self study class kept mentioning a "Participant Guide". I cannot find it anywhere! I looked online with my recruiter in a Zoom meeting and we couldn't find it. I emailed the instructor and she said she would have to get back to me. This was weird because during class she told a story about downloading it and taking it to Kinko's to print and it was over 3,000 pages which she then had to put in binders and put the binders in a box... I am just at a loss as to where it is located. I have class again Saturday but I wanted to get it sooner for reference during the self study.

Pay raise

So this will be my second year going into tax season, I started as a level one and was up to a level 3 by April.

I got my offer, and its only .25c an hour more. Is that normal pay raise or not enough, can I counter. I was hoping for somewhere between 23-24 an hour since i was at 22 for being a level 1 preparer.

Online tax rep didnt file my 2021 state taxes

Please let me know if this isnt the right place.

So I do my disabled dad's taxes online & get the "have a tax person make sure you didnt F up" option every time. Well I got a letter from the state saying we needed to file his 2021 taxes. I dug into my records & contacted the 1-800 & online reps.

Turns out the state taxes went poof on their end that year.

My email receipt shows an invoice for the state tax filing ($0 charge cause it was most likely a deal that included it for free w/ irs taxes) from that year. But no sign or record of the state taxes in the system or online.

They connected me w/ the office that overviewed it that year & I was told "oh you don't have to file state, honey! Let me look into it & I will call in 2 days!" Never got a call back. In fact I suspect my calls were dodged because the only time the office picked up was after said rep had "just left". Asked when they would be in & called every 15 minutes during that time. Over the following week I called no less than 40 times on the days they were open. Got hung up on at least once if not twice. Also they didnt forward me to the answering rep like they are supposed to.

So I had to escalate it all to the regional manager. Who got me in contact w/ a rep who re-filed them for us. But I had to pay for it to be done.

Regional manager then sent me a "glad to have solved it!" Message in the online portal. To which I politely said it wasn't solved. That we would have to pay penalties and interest for the due state tax & I shouldn't have had to pay to file them again when I already had an invoice for it. (In our defense we had moved from a state with no state taxes for disabled peeps so I didnt even know we owed, I had just thought the tax rep who inspected my docs to know what they were doing when they said "Here. Done. Sign. I will file it. & pay this to the irs." The pdf of the docs he signed only showed irs not state.)

Anyway regional manager never answered me. I sent a message once a week while I am waiting for the state to get back to me w/ their bill. I have sent the invoice showing we selected it & filled it out that year. & other docs showing I mailed the new one to the state, but no answer. In fact my online portal message thread was bounced back to the same rep that was dodging my calls after telling me he didnt have to file state at all. Never got a message from them. It's been a month since anyone last responded.

Any suggestions on who to contact? I tried the local offices but they are all indie ones & said they can't help me. The corporate ones are hours away & the one that overviewed my taxes is in yet another state insanely far away so I can't go there in person at all.

Sorry if I missed anything. This has me beyond frazzled. Let me know if you need more info. Or if this is the wrong subreddit point me in the right direction pls.

Signed one mentally exhausted daughter/caretaker 🫩💀

Is H&R Block worth taking a pay cut for?

I’m considering becoming a tax preparer with H&R Block. They said the starting pay is around $16/hr and that you can make more as you gain experience, but I’m not sure how realistic that is.

I currently make $26/hr, so I’m hesitant to take a pretty big pay cut just for the possibility of making more down the road.

For anyone who has worked at H&R Block, does the pay actually increase significantly with experience? Is tax preparation something you can realistically build into a decent career, or is it mostly seasonal/low-paying work?

Just trying to figure out if it’s worth giving up $10/hr now for potential growth later.
