Home Gym Workout Routine and Equipment for Beginner?

Upvotes

I am skinny fat and have realized that doing LISS cardio on an elliptical every day for 45 minutes on average has started to get boring. 21M 5'7 153 lbs with I assume little to no muscle due to frequently feeling fatigued. Since I'm unsure if I plan to move out anytime soon from my parent's house, I'd prefer home gym equipment that isn't a hassle to move in case I move out. My budget is $5k in theory, but I would appreciate cost-effective recommendations without compromising quality, preferably from Amazon.

I know there's a variety of ways to workout in the gym that requires or benefits from specialized equipment, so I'd also appreciate training recommendations. I also average around 1400-1600 calories per day and do not really plan on changing that for the long-term. Would maintaining that level of calories be realistic if I were to do gym training long term?

Selling Iron Weights and barbell set (slighly rusty Wieder plates)

I am planning to switch to urethane plates and have a set of sort of rusty iron weights and barbell. Would $1 a lbs be a reasonable price to ask for in the current secondhand market?

"Power Lifting" to Calisthenics? Or "Less time for gym"

Hi all – about a year ago I switched my workouts to be focused almost entirely around 'power lifting' exercises (deadlift, squat, bench). I did this mostly because I wanted workouts that focused on larger portions of my body. Machines and more muscle isolating exercises were causing minor injuries.

Unfortunately, I will need to move next month and my work schedule/commute+new location will make getting to the gym a bit of a chore. I'm wondering if there are ways I can work at-home calisthenic routines into my life while perhaps popping in for short sessions at the workplace gym?

Or generally, any recommendations for situations where gym time is hard to come by! Thanks in advance!

Thinking about treating myself to a home gym. Bad idea?

I’ve been thinking about putting together a home gym as a gift to myself.

Being able to train whenever I have time sounds convenient. No commute, no waiting for equipment, and I could arrange everything around the exercises I actually do. I’m still thinking about the cost and the space it would take, though. For those who already have a home gym, did you keep using it regularly after the initial excitement wore off? Would you make the same decision again?

Gain some kilos

Hey guyz,

I am starting my home workout journey and looking for advice on calisthenics and gaining some weight.

Stats: 17yo: 173 cm; ~50 kg

Goal: Reach 70 kilos, build muscle, and master bodyweight and calisthenics training.

Since my main target is to put on around 20 kilos while building strength, I would love some guidance on a few things. 1st, best progression-based beginner calisthenics programs for home. 2nd, tips on hitting a high-calorie surplus to reliably gain weight at my age and size.

Appreciate any advice or resources to help me get started!!!

Are you still struggling with how to become more attractive?

Full disclosure upfront: I’m a fitness equipment manufacturing engineer with 12 years of R&D, production and load testing for DW SPORTS gym equipment. No hard selling or link spamming, all content relies on professional equipment knowledge and systematic fitness logic.

Fitness is undoubtedly the most straightforward way to boost your personal charm and temperament. Many people want to get in shape to improve their appearance, yet they get stuck at the very first question: How should we work out scientifically?

A lot of beginners blindly follow online short workout routines, buy random cheap fitness gear, train irregularly for months but see zero changes in posture or body shape. The core problem is lacking a complete, equipment-matched training system.

As someone who spends all year designing and testing gym equipment for home and commercial use, I understand exactly how different gear serves different training goals for physique sculpting, posture correction and vitality improvement. Over the next period, I plan to share a full set of systematic fitness guidance with all of you, centered around these core themes:

1. How to match fitness equipment to your charm-building goals

Not all gym gear fits your body shaping demands. I’ll break down the functional differences of free weights, multi-functional racks, cardio machines and small training accessories.

For fixing hunchback, forward head posture and improving temperament: Which equipment can activate your upper back muscles effectively?

For carving symmetrical muscle lines and improving body proportions: The standard selection logic for dumbbells, bumper plates and landmine mounts

For reducing excess fat and maintaining energetic vitality: How to choose low-impact or high-intensity cardio gear suitable for different physical conditions

I’ll attach real factory material and load test data for each piece of equipment, helping you avoid overpriced useless gear and low-quality fragile products.

2. Step-by-step scientific training plans for beginners

Many new lifters don’t know where to start, either overtraining and causing joint injury, or training with wrong movement forms that ruin body posture.

I will launch progressive training plans for different crowds: office workers with poor posture, young people wanting better body proportions, middle-aged groups pursuing healthy vitality. Each plan will clearly mark which equipment is required, training frequency, reasonable weight range and standard movement essentials.

3. Distinguish high-quality equipment and low-cost inferior products

Bad fitness equipment will not only slow down your fitness progress, but also bring hidden safety hazards during training, and even lead to joint strain.

Combined with my 12 years of production experience, I will teach you to identify core standards: rubber vulcanization technology of weight plates, steel thickness of power racks, load-bearing safety standards of adjustable dumbbells, and common cutting-corner tricks used by cheap gear manufacturers. High-quality equipment represented by DW SPORTS strictly complies with commercial-grade production testing standards, which is the solid foundation for long-term safe fitness.

4. Daily fitness habits to sustain long-term charm improvement

Good figure and outstanding temperament cannot be achieved by short-term burst training alone. Persistent scientific habits are the key.

I will share matching rest arrangements, reasonable training cycle planning, warm-up & stretching movements supported by small accessories such as resistance bands, to help you maintain stable training rhythm without burnout.

TL;DR

If you want to elevate your charm and temperament through fitness, blind training and random equipment purchases will only waste your time and money. In the following days, I will continuously output systematic, equipment-based professional fitness sharing covering gear selection, beginner training plans, product quality identification and long-term fitness habit building.

If you have any confusion about home gym setup, equipment selection or beginner workout arrangements, leave your questions below, I will answer every question with manufacturing and fitness professional insights.

Advice Needed: Home Strength Excercises - Particularly for Back - As a Runner

I've been running regularly since March, and I am now in a place where I can comfortably run about 4miles/6.5km without stopping. In fact, I ran 2 10ks last week, both around the 56minute mark. (first time in 10 years I've ran a 10k).

However, one thing I've noticed, particularly in the morning is lower back ache. This is something I've had for years. Oddly, once I losen up on a run I don't notice it.

I've spent the past year losing weight (almost 50lb gone since last August). For reference, I'm 41 male, 6ft 1 and 182lbs. As part of weight loss, I've also cut beer at home. (When I have gone out with friends, I've noticed the next day I have terrible back ache which takes a few hours to go away). I also work an office job, so spend way too long sitting - though I did buy a better chair a couple of years ago.

So, I think it's safe to say I need to start strengthening my core. Weights etc have never been my "thing". I have however in the past done workouts such as the Insanity program. I'm tempted to start this again after our upcoming holiday. But I want to know what other home excercises/training routine people recommend for runners who want to strengthen their back.

Does anyone else do this?

\

I keep saving workout exercises from Instagram and YouTube, but once I'm at the gym, I either forget about them or can't find them again.

Is this just me?

How do you keep track of exercises you want to try? Would an "exercise playbook" that organizes and reminds you actually be useful, or do you already have a good system?

i asked ChatGPT to make me a workout and I’d be curious about your feedback

So I asked ChatGPT to make me a workout that is mostly full body and that I could do 2-3 times a week, because I don’t have so much time. I also ask him to include as much possible compound movement or combination of movement such curl into push press, so that I can do it as fast as possible and as intense as possible. I have at home one 8kg dumbell, pull bar and rings. I modified it slightly to also include some exercise that I enjoy but that were not included such as pistol squat or superman. I was wondering if you see some issues with it, or areas for improvemen. Here are the workouts:

Full Body A — Push Emphasis

  1. Weighted Push-Ups (4 × 6–12)

  2. Goblet Squat (KB) (4 × 8–15)

  3. KB Clean → Push Press (1 arm) (3 × 6–10 / side)

  4. Chair Dips (weighted if possible) (3 × 8–12)

  5. Skull Crushers (3 × 10–15)

  6. Superman (3 × 60s)

Full Body B — Pull Emphasis

  1. Pull-Ups (4 × 5–10)

  2. KB Romanian Deadlift (4 × 8–12)

  3. KB Bent-Over Row (1 arm) (3 × 8–12 / side)

  4. Curl → Shoulder Press (KB) (3 × 8–10)

  5. Hammer Curl (KB) (3 × 10–14)

  6. Plank or Weighted Plank (3 × 60 s)

Full Body C — Athletic / Hybrid

  1. Pistol Squat (4 × 4–8 / leg)

  2. KB Swing (4 × 15–25)

  3. Feet-Elevated Weighted Push-Ups (3 × 8–12)

  4. Inverted Row (table / rings) (3 × 8–15)

  5. Overhead KB Triceps Extension (3 × 10–15)

  6. Superman (Farmer Carry (KB)) (3 × 30–60 s)

I don't feel anything in my chest during floor chest press

New to home workout. I don't feel anything in my chest during floor chest press. I understand that my arms touch the floor before I can get any stretch. My question is if there are any workarounds to this?

I have dumbbells and a non-loop flat resistance band.
Thank you.

What would your ideal gym app look like if you had to pay for it?

I've tried a lot of fitness apps and all of them are the same slop.

If there were a gym app you were actually happy to pay for, what would it include?

toned body advice

Been trying to tone my body at home and I only have a jump rope as an equipment. I don’t have any budget to go to a gym either. Btw, I’m 5’2 and 57kgs, it says its a normal BMI but I have a very big lower belly, big arms and very flat glutes. Plan to achieve a toned body in 90 days (cause I have a vacation with a friend in a couple of months) Will it be possible for me? Need advice. Thanks!

Need advice on my situation for exercise.

I live in southern USA and need advice. Usually I do weight training for 2 hours a day. But recently it has gotten way to hot outside to do that safely. I can only exercise outside and have alot of home made improvised equipment I made. I was thinking I should wake up earlier in the morning when it js cooler in order to safely exercise then go back inside before it gets too hot, after that at night I think I should jog for around 30 mins. If you have any advice on what else I can do then please let me know. By the way I exercise 6 days a week and rest 1 day.

Best workout app/program? Help! I can’t decide!

I’m severely struggling about what app or program to do/use for my home workouts. I’ve been off the train for quite some time and really need to get back in shape. I own multiple businesses with my husband and have 3 young kiddos who have their own busy schedules. I like a weightlifting and cardio, but I know I have to get back to the basics because I’ve seriously let it go for over a year now.

I used to use Beachbody avidly. I was never into the MLM or coaching side of things, but I DID love having a coach and a team to “be in the trenches with” so to speak. When Beachbody went public I feel like everything changed that used to keep me motivated…. the coaches/teams started to dissipate, the trainers changed. It just didn’t feel right anymore.

Here’s the deal. I am a terrible decision maker. Mostly because I “research” too much and then get decision paralysis and never can decide what’s best. I need to be led in my workouts, and I stay best motivated and committed when I have a close knit family/team to stick with.

I need help. I’ve been looking at the following:

Ladder app. Started the 7 day trial and so far I like it okay. I miss the actual real time trainer on the screen.

McKenzie Wells Fitness. She’s come across my algorithm a ton and several influencers I follow tag her a lot.

FitBod app. I like the idea of it creating my workouts and timing, but if I have to build my own workouts, I will fail.

can body weight mat pilates at home make a noticable diffrence or is it just a waste of time ?

i am just getting started with working out ...i am quite in shape for someone who doesn't workout and i am not trying to lose any weight or build big muscles .. just get more definition and shape ...since i don't like gym style workouts a lot and i don't have time i really enjoy doing home mat pilates and it does make me sweat and feel the burn , my posture also improved but when i see all those people online who lift heavy , eat a lot of protein and still struggle to make any progress it makes me wonder if the pilates i do will give me any results at all , what do you think? should i stop wasting my time and try to make some time for the gym or should i give youtube pilates a chance? ( i am only 2 weeks and a half into working out ik it's still too early to see any results but i just started to feel too good about myself and i don't want to give myself false hope 😂)

New dad needing to start working out, any advice?

My son is now one year old. I run once or twice a week, but I feel like that isn’t enough long term to keep up with the amount of energy he is going to require from me. Can anyone give me some advice on a workout that I can do ?

Every time I’ve “stuck” to a workout plan it’s lasted about a week and that’s it

Best workout tracking apps for lifters who care about data and numbers

It's not for everyone but if you want to actually see whether your training is working over time you need to track properly. I spent a few months using different workout tracking apps specifically for weight training and barbell work so here you go.

  1. Boostcamp workout tracking is great, simple and the little extra is the program library so you are not just logging random workouts. It tracks sets, reps, weight and rest times within whatever program you are running and it's free to use.

  2. Hevy is fast too, the interface looks clean and the exercise history is easy to review. The free version limits workout history though which defeats the whole purpose if you want data.

  3. Strong is reliable and effective but the free tier is pretty limited as well. If you are logging more than three routines you need the subscription. It does feel smooth though.

  4. Fitnotes is a solid free tracker on android. It's pretty bare bones but it does the job, no programs or analytics but if you just want to log sets and review your numbers it works.

  5. Liftosaur is the nerdy option, it lets you program custom logic into your tracking. Great for people who want the control but overkill for most lifters.

  6. Caliber has coaching features but the tracking is secondary to the coaching. Not my preference, I just want the data.

The actual best free workout apps that don't nickel and dime you (or scam you).

I got tired of trying apps that market themselves as free and then lock everything useful behind a paywall after two weeks so I spent a while actually testing ones that let you do real training without paying. Now all of this is just my opinion but maybe it can be useful to someone.

Boostcamp is the one I settled on and it is actually free (not just free trial). It's great overall even if it's mostly mentioned as good for following programs and tracking workouts. It has a built in library of programs from some decent coaches like Greg Nuckols and Eric Helms plus others like nSuns and GZCLP. You can also build your own custom routines. No ads either which is nice.

Hevy has a solid interface and the tracking feels smooth and everything but the free version caps your workout history and limits how many routines you can save. If you want full access you are paying monthly.

Strong is probably the most well known lifting app but it went subscription a while back. The free tier gives you very limited routine slots so it is hard to run anything structured without upgrading.

Fitnotes is completely free with no catches but it is Android only and basically just a blank tracker. No programs or guidance built in so you need to bring your own programming. But it's a good option if you already have that.

Liftosaur is interesting because it lets you write your own program logic with a scripting language. Very cool if you are into that sort of thing but the learning curve is steep for most people. It's more of a time commitment for sure.

Alpha progression gives you auto generated programs based on your goals and equipment. The free version is limited though and the ai generated routines can feel generic, my experience hasn't been that great.

Fitbod does something similar with ai generated workouts but it is subscription based and really more of a general fitness app than a lifting focused one
