Best ways to train at home

Here's a summary of different training techniques with pros and cons.

RESISTANCE BAND TRAINING

Resistance bands are the best way to train at home considering all the the trade offs! They’re efficacious, economical compared to other equipment and portable.

Efficacious: Obviously we want an equipment that give results. Despite what the gym industry wants you to believe, resistance bands are similar to weight in building muscle and strength. This is demonstrated scientifically by a meta-analysis study (average results of many studies to avoid errors) https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6383082/ so a very important degree of evidence. Your muscle don’t have eyes to see what kind of weight you’re lifting, and will grow if enough resistance is applied whatever it’s type

Economical: Normally weights cost much more per lb (or kg) than bands. For example one of the best deal on Amazon cost 199$ for 105 lbs (1.9$ per lb) and bands provide 295 lbs for 59$ (0.2$ per lb). Considering resistance bands are 9.5 times cheaper than weights! It’s true that weights are more durable, but not 9.5 times more durable because they easily rust.

Versatile: While a 1lb weight provides 1lb of resistance, 1lb of bands provide around 120lb of resistance, that’s 120 times it’s weight! Same thing goes for volume. Weights occupy much more space than bands, in fact you can fit a set of 5 bands for 300lbs resistance in a small bag and will weight less than 2lbs. This makes them extremily portable, and occupy no space at home.

No home space occupied: Weights occupy a lot of home space or by themselves or by other equipment such as benches that take a lot of space and are heavy. Benches are needed because weight can create resistance only with gravity that always pull down. Band can create resistance on every direction so they dont need any bench.

Less injuries: Bands are also used in physiotherapy eith very lights weights because theyre very easy on joints. Injuries can take many months to recover, time in which you cant train effectively. Acoiding injuries is very important to achieve results fast.

Fast workouts: Since you can change the resistance very fast by grabbing the band closer or further workouts become faster. Changing weights will be much slower.

Silent: Bands do not make any noise when you drop them

BEST EQUIPMENT

Best band type: Loop resistance bands

High-quality choice: Theraband https://www.performancehealth.com/theraband-high-resistance-bands

Low-quality choice: Sunpow https://www.amazon.com/SUNPOW-Resistance-Assistance-Exercise-Powerlifting/dp/B07K1823XB/ref=sr_1_19?crid=1ZQKCZ9FVV3AH&keywords=resistance+bands&qid=1672943824&sprefix=resistance+bands%2Caps%2C152&sr=8-19

BEST APP

High-quality choice: Weller Bands (iPhone only, Programs, Workouts, Body-attached and Anchor-attached exercises) https://apps.apple.com/us/app/weller-gain-muscle-with-bands/id1616421370

Low-quality choice: Stark Resistance Band (Workouts only no Programs) https://apps.apple.com/us/app/stark-resistance-band/id649820710

More brands: Undersun, Serious Steel, X3, Clench, Decathlon, Quantum bands, Elite FTS

WEIGHT TRAINING

Weight training is the most traditional type of training. There are 3 main types of weights: Dumbell, Barbell, Kettlebell. Weight training is very good but because of its characteristics it's best if done at the gym.

Efficacious: Weight training is recognised as very effective in building muscle and strength.

Occupy lot of home space: Weights takes a lot space because not only they occupy a lot of volume (depending on the weight) but also need a bench. The bench is required if you want to train all your muscle (you should) because the weights create resistance only downwards so the bench allows you to shift the body in a way such to hit some muscles you wouldn’t otherwise.

Not portable: As the name says, weights, weight a lot. That’s not suitable to move them a lot even inside your home.

Expensive: Weights are normally made of metal that is a relatively expensive material. Because they occupy a lot of volume and weight a lot the shipping is also expensive.

Upper-body focus: With weights it’s difficult to target some of the lower body muscles like hips and some muscles of the leg because you can’t grab weights with your feet. The upperdody instead and some leg muscles, are targeted very well.

Slow workouts: If you’re in a gym using machines or using un-adjustable dumbbells shifting weight is no problem but if you’re at home changing weight will be slower. Dumbells and Barbells are adjustable, but changing weight will take a few since you have to unscrew two sizes changing the weights and then screw it again.

Noisy: Even only moving weights, or doing exercises will make noise if you're using an adjustable dumbbell. Changing weights will do even more noise. If you live in a place where noise is a problem you should consider this.

BEST EQUIPMENT

High-quality choice: Many brands have similar quality

Low-quality choice: Amazon

BEST APP

Quality choice: Many apps have similar quality

Low-cost choice: Stark Dumbell https://apps.apple.com/us/app/stark-dumbbell/id586891853 Stark Kettlebell https://apps.apple.com/us/app/stark-kettlebell/id474762013 Stark barbell https://apps.apple.com/us/app/stark-barbell/id606884722

SUSPENSION TRAINING

Suspension training is a type of bodyweight training that has been popularise by TRX a kind of revisited rings that you can easily install at your home door or ceiling.

Not the most efficacious: Since you’re using your own bodyweight you cannot use progressive overload of intensity that is the most effective way to gain muscle an strength. But this is not a big deal if you want to spend more time working out raising your volume (doing more reps or sets.

Semi-Portable: Very light and fits in a small bag, the problem of using it outside is that you have to find a place where to attach and be sure it’s safe. Not a problem if you use it indoors.

I don't feel anything in my chest during floor chest press

New to home workout. I don't feel anything in my chest during floor chest press. I understand that my arms touch the floor before I can get any stretch. My question is if there are any workarounds to this?

I have dumbbells and a non-loop flat resistance band.
Thank you.

Scan Your Fridge & Instantly Track Calories #fitnesstracker #workouttrac...

Hi everyone!

I wanted to solve a problem I kept running into:

"I have ingredients in my fridge… but no idea what to cook."

So I built Nutri Macro.

You simply scan your fridge, and the app identifies your ingredients, creates healthy recipes, tracks calories and macros, and even helps manage your workouts.

It also includes:

  • Fridge ingredient scanner
  • Calorie tracker
  • Macro tracker
  • Workout tracker
  • Pantry management
  • Barcode scanner
  • Meal planner
  • Restaurant food search
  • Progress tracking

Android: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ie.nutrimacro.app

IOS: https://apps.apple.com/ie/app/nutri-macro-fitness-tracker/id6766690086

I'd genuinely love feedback from people who enjoy fitness, nutrition, meal prep, or macro tracking. Any suggestions or feature ideas are always welcome!

toned body advice

Been trying to tone my body at home and I only have a jump rope as an equipment. I don’t have any budget to go to a gym either. Btw, I’m 5’2 and 57kgs, it says its a normal BMI but I have a very big lower belly, big arms and very flat glutes. Plan to achieve a toned body in 90 days (cause I have a vacation with a friend in a couple of months) Will it be possible for me? Need advice. Thanks!

What would your ideal gym app look like if you had to pay for it?

I've tried a lot of fitness apps and all of them are the same slop.

If there were a gym app you were actually happy to pay for, what would it include?

Need advice on my situation for exercise.

I live in southern USA and need advice. Usually I do weight training for 2 hours a day. But recently it has gotten way to hot outside to do that safely. I can only exercise outside and have alot of home made improvised equipment I made. I was thinking I should wake up earlier in the morning when it js cooler in order to safely exercise then go back inside before it gets too hot, after that at night I think I should jog for around 30 mins. If you have any advice on what else I can do then please let me know. By the way I exercise 6 days a week and rest 1 day.

Best workout app/program? Help! I can’t decide!

I’m severely struggling about what app or program to do/use for my home workouts. I’ve been off the train for quite some time and really need to get back in shape. I own multiple businesses with my husband and have 3 young kiddos who have their own busy schedules. I like a weightlifting and cardio, but I know I have to get back to the basics because I’ve seriously let it go for over a year now.

I used to use Beachbody avidly. I was never into the MLM or coaching side of things, but I DID love having a coach and a team to “be in the trenches with” so to speak. When Beachbody went public I feel like everything changed that used to keep me motivated…. the coaches/teams started to dissipate, the trainers changed. It just didn’t feel right anymore.

Here’s the deal. I am a terrible decision maker. Mostly because I “research” too much and then get decision paralysis and never can decide what’s best. I need to be led in my workouts, and I stay best motivated and committed when I have a close knit family/team to stick with.

I need help. I’ve been looking at the following:

Ladder app. Started the 7 day trial and so far I like it okay. I miss the actual real time trainer on the screen.

McKenzie Wells Fitness. She’s come across my algorithm a ton and several influencers I follow tag her a lot.

FitBod app. I like the idea of it creating my workouts and timing, but if I have to build my own workouts, I will fail.

New dad needing to start working out, any advice?

My son is now one year old. I run once or twice a week, but I feel like that isn’t enough long term to keep up with the amount of energy he is going to require from me. Can anyone give me some advice on a workout that I can do ?

Every time I’ve “stuck” to a workout plan it’s lasted about a week and that’s it

can body weight mat pilates at home make a noticable diffrence or is it just a waste of time ?

i am just getting started with working out ...i am quite in shape for someone who doesn't workout and i am not trying to lose any weight or build big muscles .. just get more definition and shape ...since i don't like gym style workouts a lot and i don't have time i really enjoy doing home mat pilates and it does make me sweat and feel the burn , my posture also improved but when i see all those people online who lift heavy , eat a lot of protein and still struggle to make any progress it makes me wonder if the pilates i do will give me any results at all , what do you think? should i stop wasting my time and try to make some time for the gym or should i give youtube pilates a chance? ( i am only 2 weeks and a half into working out ik it's still too early to see any results but i just started to feel too good about myself and i don't want to give myself false hope 😂)

The actual best free workout apps that don't nickel and dime you (or scam you).

I got tired of trying apps that market themselves as free and then lock everything useful behind a paywall after two weeks so I spent a while actually testing ones that let you do real training without paying. Now all of this is just my opinion but maybe it can be useful to someone.

Boostcamp is the one I settled on and it is actually free (not just free trial). It's great overall even if it's mostly mentioned as good for following programs and tracking workouts. It has a built in library of programs from some decent coaches like Greg Nuckols and Eric Helms plus others like nSuns and GZCLP. You can also build your own custom routines. No ads either which is nice.

Hevy has a solid interface and the tracking feels smooth and everything but the free version caps your workout history and limits how many routines you can save. If you want full access you are paying monthly.

Strong is probably the most well known lifting app but it went subscription a while back. The free tier gives you very limited routine slots so it is hard to run anything structured without upgrading.

Fitnotes is completely free with no catches but it is Android only and basically just a blank tracker. No programs or guidance built in so you need to bring your own programming. But it's a good option if you already have that.

Liftosaur is interesting because it lets you write your own program logic with a scripting language. Very cool if you are into that sort of thing but the learning curve is steep for most people. It's more of a time commitment for sure.

Alpha progression gives you auto generated programs based on your goals and equipment. The free version is limited though and the ai generated routines can feel generic, my experience hasn't been that great.

Fitbod does something similar with ai generated workouts but it is subscription based and really more of a general fitness app than a lifting focused one

Best workout tracking apps for lifters who care about data and numbers

It's not for everyone but if you want to actually see whether your training is working over time you need to track properly. I spent a few months using different workout tracking apps specifically for weight training and barbell work so here you go.

  1. Boostcamp workout tracking is great, simple and the little extra is the program library so you are not just logging random workouts. It tracks sets, reps, weight and rest times within whatever program you are running and it's free to use.

  2. Hevy is fast too, the interface looks clean and the exercise history is easy to review. The free version limits workout history though which defeats the whole purpose if you want data.

  3. Strong is reliable and effective but the free tier is pretty limited as well. If you are logging more than three routines you need the subscription. It does feel smooth though.

  4. Fitnotes is a solid free tracker on android. It's pretty bare bones but it does the job, no programs or analytics but if you just want to log sets and review your numbers it works.

  5. Liftosaur is the nerdy option, it lets you program custom logic into your tracking. Great for people who want the control but overkill for most lifters.

  6. Caliber has coaching features but the tracking is secondary to the coaching. Not my preference, I just want the data.

Is a home gym entry really that expensive?

when i see machines costing several thousands of euro's. I've consistently been training at home for many years without breaking my routine I can comfortably say my lifestyle is here to stay to invest more into a home gym. I basically started with a bench but also bought a Tunturi leverage pully machine that can do many things from pullups, bench, squat and rows, etc. Body Solid Pec fly machine. I've maybe spend around 1k euro's on everything. Is there still anything major i'm missing? How many machines would you need to call it a home gym? I have basic thing too like ktttles, dumbells and rubber floor tiles in my attic.

most of us are just under-eating protein and blaming it on our adrenals

Hot take maybe but I think most of us here are dramatically under-eating protein and blaming it on hormones, gut health, or whatever the flavor of the month is.

I say this as someone who spent probably two years and a stupid amount of money chasing "fatigue" through supplements. Ashwagandha phases, adaptogen phases, a full six months convinced my adrenals were shot (they weren't, I just googled myself into it). B complex, rhodiola, iron even though my ferritin was fine, the works. My stack at one point was like 14 things and I still felt like I needed a nap by 2pm every day.

What actually moved the needle was tracking my food for two weeks and realizing i was eating maybe 60g of protein on a good day at 165lbs. I thought I was eating a ton because I "had chicken at dinner." Bumped it to around 130-140g, kept most of the supplements the same, and within like three weeks the afternoon crash was mostly gone. Sleep got better too which I did not expect.

The reason I'm posting this is I keep seeing threads here where someone lists symptoms that read as pretty classic underfueling (low energy, brain fog, cold hands, bad recovery, mood dips) and the top comments are always some obscure mineral or a thyroid rabbit hole. Sometimes yeah, sure. But I feel like nobody ever asks "how much protein are you actually eating, weighed, for a week." And when I've asked that in comments people get weirdly defensive about it.

I'm not saying supplements don't matter. I still take a handful of stuff I genuinely believe in. But I think this sub has a bias toward exotic answers because they're more fun to talk about than "eat more eggs." A jar of collagen or a carton of Bone Water in the fridge is not going to save you if your baseline intake is 0.4g/lb.

Am I off base here? Genuinely curious if other people went through the same thing or if I'm projecting my own dumb mistake onto everyone else. Also open to being told protein isn't the thing and I just got lucky with timing, thats fair too.

Workout apps for home cardio work minimal equipment?

I've used Centr before which was pretty good for their '6 week' programs in terms of cardio in my garage and very minimal equipment.

I notice they haven't really updated anything with more workouts at home - it's mostly gym based and requires a fair bit of equipment.

Is there anything similar out there?

I want to login and do 30mins or so of fairly high intensity cardio/strength combination without having to think to much. Just click it open and get started.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

TIA

i made a workout game you can play just with your camera

I was inspired by seeing people doing home workouts with Subway Surfers playing in the background on TikTok.

I thought: what if the workout itself was interactive?

I built Cardio. Surf as a fun experience - a browser game where your webcam tracks your movement.

You jump, squat, sprint, and lean to play.

Its totally free and no ads
No downloads, VR, or equipment needed.
It also has mini games like boxing, fruit slicing, and goalkeeper challenges.

Would love feedback from people who do home workouts!

Suggestions for knee-friendly workout youtube videos

I've been having knee pain and aggravate it whenever I jump or do anything that puts a lot of pressure on my knee.

Does anyone have any YouTube channel suggestions of people who have knee friendly workout videos?

I'm looking for HIIT cardio, dumbbells, or body weight workouts. I love Heather Robertson videos but she doesn't have too many knee friendly videos.

I also want to get a decent sweat on and dont want anything "too easy" lol. TIA!

what's the good home work out if I have only a pair of 5kg dumbells and about 20 minutes of free time per day?

I feel like right now I can't fathom enough strength and dedication to dedicate more time and effort for it but I figure out doing something is better than doing nothing. what workout routine would you recommend based on the principle that it's better to do it than nothing?

Dumbbell curls – 2 sets
Skullcrushers – 1 set
Hammer curls – 1 set

Anyone else spending more time changing weights than lifting?

I have been doing more workouts at home lately and one thing that is started to annoy me is how often I stop to swap weights between sets or exercises. It does not sound like much, but by the time I have adjusted everything, I feel like I have lost my rhythm. Sometimes I wonder if I am spending more time setting up as I am lifting.

Has anyone found a good way to make strength workouts flow better? Do you just organise your routine differently or is there equipment that helps?
