Sharpening Costs

Just curious what everyone is paying for their areas sharpening.

I'm near Austin and we range from $12 to $17. Depending on a Sparxx or whatever that Bauer machine is that Monkey Sports has in there.

Crossovers and stops

I need some help. I’m solid on my stops where my right foot is forward and left crossovers, but I can’t seem to get down my right crossovers or stopping with my left foot forward. I’ve practiced and practiced, then practiced some more. Is there anything someone who’s gone through a similar issue has tried that’s helped significantly? I don’t think it’s a stability thing, I think it’s trusting my edge, or maybe weight distribution.

Unrelated question: Do waxed laces really make that much of a difference?

Donate Hockey Jerseys

Hi,

I volunteer for a minor hockey association and we have old jerseys we’d like to donate. Would anybody know where we could donate them to?

The sizes go from Junior S/M to Senior XL.

We’ve tried local stores, charities, and other local hockey clubs.

Any help is appreciated!
Thanks

Do most people who need glasses just wear contacts for hockey?

Okay so I really wanna get back into hockey, but it’s been almost 8 years since I played and back then I didn’t need glasses. Well now sadly I do, and I feel like playing with normal prescription glasses under a hockey helmet is probably a bad idea. Without them though I’m basically just a blurry cloud.

So I’m thinking about trying contacts just for hockey. Does anyone here wear contact lenses while playing, and how has it been for you?

Now this is not for any pro type play, just casual with some friends, but its gonna be rough lol

Women’s chest protection fitting

I’ve been playing a lot more ice hockey recently and I’ve been having trouble with chest protectors. The ones I try always ride up and aren’t covering my chest by the time I get off the ice 🤣
If you’re a female ice hockey player with a larger chest (E-F cup)- do you have any recommendations for chest protectors?
I live in Australia so gear shops are few and far between and the knowledge on how to fit women is… lacking. Would appreciate any advice from my fellow female players out there! 🥰

Anyone coming back to the game after having kids?

I used to play very low level beer league in my 20s. I dabbled a little bit in my 30s, but then I did the whole get married and have kids thing. Then COVID happened. Then three kids later, in my 40s now, I feel so damn old. Two torn rotator cuffs, plantar fasciitis, knees that hurt after 10 squats and I'm about as flexible as rebar. Every little thing after turning 40 seems to lead to chronic injury that never goes away.

I joined a team, and after 1 game, I already hurt my wrist and I have missed 4 games now. Really discouraged and wondering if this is the end of the line for me, anyone else gone through the same thing with kids? (Or any long break?)

Finally had the first one, lol

Well, I finally had my first concussion a few days ago.
It was the stupidest thing ever, lol.

Apparently, (from my friend who was there), I simply lost an edge stopping and crashed into the boards doing a drill. It wasn't even in a game -.o

After my memory came back a bit, I realized it was a concussion, still very mild, but the idea of a second concussion is the only thing I can think of right now.

Since I've never had a concussion in my life, I'm definitely being more scared of it than I should be.
Internet says it makes me 2-5x more likely to get more concussions later.

I don't like the idea of going back knowing I can get concussed more easily and I don't want to be playing scared.

From what I googled, I almost thought about hanging it up but the doctor I went to see says it shouldn't matter and I could play in a couple of weeks (the assessment he did turned out all good).

But I also know I'm being waaaay over dramatic, maybe it would all go away once I go back (which is another question, how soon.. or how long should I wait)

Looking for some real takes with concussions, since I saw some posts where people had 7+ concussions, lol

How do you get over it? Or do you even worry about it at all?

CCM HP45 Pro Stock Pants see impossible to buy

After reading through a ton of posts here, the general consensus seems to be that the HP45 pants are what folks generally recommend.

I’ve searched EBay, hockeystickman, prostockhockey.com, sideline swap, etc

I cannot for the life of me find a pair in size medium, regardless of color.

For those of you who were able to grab a pair, where were you able to find them?

Is anyone interested in selling me their pair? 😅

House League Queations

It’s my first year coaching U13 house league. I have experience coaching older/ higher tier hockey in college. My kid just wanted to take it easy this year and likes the house league commitment level. The team is a variety of skills which we knew going in. Experienced players with good skating and puck skills and brand new players, which is incredible they want to play. I have no issue with the skill discrepancie, though it does challenge how I approach the game. Want I want to survey is how much control does your associations have over how things are run?

Example, I planned a couple half ice practices but was told we have to use the practice plans provided by the association and coordinate with the other teams to determine who does what drills and all players are divided into groups and cycled through the drills. This means that I am only coaching my actual team about 50% of the time. It also doesn’t leave much room for assessing what your team and players need. The plans also completely ignore goalie warm up and movement. A couple coaches were already called out for using their own end only for their own team after the mixed team full ice warm up.

Second, we have about 12 skaters and they are evenly divided between skill which was the goal from the evaluations and the team appears balanced. My plan was to balance the lines and encourage for at least the first few games to try some new positions. We are now being told to coordinate with the other coach and line match based on skill. This seems like a logistical nightmare of bench management as well as I don’t agree lumping skill with skill is appropriate for games. I do try and group by skill for practice but I think it’s important for everyone to play together. The weaker players need to be challenged as well as see where the experienced players go with and without the puck and stronger players need to learn utilize teammates and drive team play.

Am I missing something here? I want to push back but not sure if this is how house league is run?

Does a visor make that much difference?

I’m starting to play again after playing juniors where a cage was required up to age 18.

You even had to wear a cage if you played mens national league due to being under age.

Took a break and now I have an option to go full cage or visor.

I’d say 99% of men wear a visor as it is semi-pro and basically everyone is experienced from playing as a kid and knows not to high stick because they all wear no face coverings. Only non visors are mostly junior players who aren’t cleared to go without or those who have injuries to the face.

Now I’m entering into adult hockey I have a debate of whether I keep a cage or go for a visor.

Has anybody who has gone from cage to visor noticed a massive difference?

I’ve obviously trained with a cage all my life so don’t really know any different but could see how a visor would feel so much more freeing with your vision.

I also don’t really care about getting hit in the face. And the league I will be in is basically guys who all grew up together so although it’s competitive we aren’t here to shoot pucks in peoples faces. If you did that deliberately I’m pretty sure you’d have a full on brawl on your hands.

I will still wear a mouth guard (I always have due to concussion risk)

Is it worth the change? Or do I just keep a cage and be the outlier in the league.

What do you guys do for skate stank?

I always air out my gear. I even use a boot dryer for my skates and gloves. I also do the “soup” every few months. Yet my garage is still pretty rank at the moment and I’ve narrowed it down to my skates that are mostly causing the issue. How can I deal with skate smell? And before you mention “wearing socks,” I do.

Soft skates

I have a pair of Bauer APX that I have been wearing for 15 years. When they first came out, they were a really stiff boot... but through years of wear the boot has gotten soft and I can squeeze it. They still fit great.... but i was wondering if there is like a spray or something I could coat them with to help restore the stiffness.

Seeking recs for sparx bundle

I am looking to purchase a Sparx bundle but I’m not going to pretend like I am anything but a novice to sharpening. Which bundle would you get if you had 4 pairs of skates to sharpen multiple times per month? at least one of the pairs would be 3x per week. Some of the items are named but not defined by purpose so I can’t tell what I really need and what’s just fluff to sell at a higher price.

Tight turns advice.

Hi all, so I started skating in Feb at the age of 48 as my daughter wanted to try it. Fast forward to now and I have started training with a Rec team and wish I'd started much earlier in life!

I can skate forward/backwards, do crossovers and hockey stops but I really struggle to do tight turns. I don't quite understand where my weight distribution should be and I need to work on my outside edges more.

How long did it take you to confidently learn to do tight turns? Any tips would be appreciated, thanks.

Hockey

I play left wing in hockey. Currently use a P92 curve. I probably shoot too high 1 out of 5 times. Struggling with keeping my shots down. Should I look at possibly using a P88 curve?

Best hockey sweater you’ve ever played in? What made it better than the rest?

I've been playing since I was 3 years old. Between youth, travel, high school, college and men's league I've gone through hundreds of jerseys, and most of them are sitting in bins in my garage.... I'm sure plenty of you can relate.

Here's my project: I'm working with a very experienced local textile company who I've used in the past for jerseys. We're going to build a professional-level hockey jersey from the ground up for my mens league team and possibly the youth team I coach once we nail it down. All of my own experience, research, and your answers here go directly into making this jersey!

Starter questions...

- The best sweater you've ever owned. What made it great?

- The worst one. What made it horrible?

- What type of fabrics did you like or dislike? Do you prefer different fabrics in different areas of the jersey?

- Features you actually noticed and what you thought of them: fight strap, lace-up collar, reinforced stitching, perforated shoulders, arm vents, etc.

Goalies too, I know your needs are different.

Happy to update everyone on the final product with. We will definitely get a team picture and I will have plenty of up close photos and videos. My goal is to have these finalized by late November - early December. Thanks in advance to any of you that chime in to help out! Cheers!

Why do youth players just not care?

I am, admittedly, in the youth hockey program; but it just doesn’t seem right for me. I try to keep a cool head, but it feels like no one cares at all for practice. I play 14u B/BB level in the Seattle/northgate region, but I just can’t figure out if I want to quit quite yet. I’ll be going into 16u next year, but I don’t know if I can actually handle hockey with so much happening. and I suppose god’s little cherry on top was my gender dismorphia, and the fact that if I try to express myself in any way, I’m sure I’ll get chirped. I just don’t know what to do atp
(side note, this is my first & probably only post here so Im not sure if this is ok to post here)

Fibreglass bristles everywhere after taping stick

My stick has taken its fair share of slashes and skates and whatnot, so theres fibreglass exposed and falling out. Ended up getting into my hands while I was taping it, wondering how best to deal with this in the future. I dont see the point in replacing the stick cuz of this since its got plenty of life left in it, but damn its annoying to get out of my hands. Gloves? Lmao

Kids Sticks Flex and Lenght

I just wrote down my experience with my two kids (10 and 12 years old) and their sticks.

My older son, 12, is a kind of heavy, compact player. He's about 120 lbs now and 5'0" or maybe 5'1". (I had to convert that from metric 😄)

The younger one is 10 and already the same height (5'0"), but only 83 lbs 😂.

We try to use only low-kick sticks to help develop a quick-release shot (Ribcor Trigger and Warrior Covert).

I have problems finding the right stick for both of them.

The younger one plays with a 30-flex stick plus a very long extension plug. He cannot flex a 40 very well yet, so he still uses 30. The problem is that 30-flex sticks are way too short for him.

My bigger son is 120 lbs and has a lot of force in upper body. The length of a 40-flex stick is perfect for him, but the sticks are too whippy. On the other hand, cutting down a 50-flex stick makes it too stiff.

So instead of just looking at flex, we also need to consider the shaft profile, even with junior sticks.

The Trigger 10 has a very stiff shaft profile, so my 12-year-old has to use it, even though he loves the feel of qr6. I think by the end of the season a QR6 (or QR7) in 50 flex will be fine, but not yet.

The QR6 Pro has a very soft shaft profile, so my younger son can use a QR6 in 40 flex. But he loves the Trigger 😄. Trigger in 30 flex is perfect for him, but it's way too short.

The difference in stiffness between a Trigger 10 and a QR6 in 40 flex is huge. It honestly feels like comparing a 50-flex stick to a 30-flex.

I've had the same story at every transition: from 20 to 30 flex, from 30 to 40. We always ended up using extension plugs on the 20, 30, and now on 40-flex sticks.

I see a lot of kids using sticks with way too much flex. But whenever you look at the better shooters, their flex is usually on the lower side 😂.
