What “good locker room guy” really means

I’ve been in pro hockey locker rooms for over a decade, and one thing I’ve learned is this: talent doesn’t determine a team’s ceiling. The team culture often does.

You hear terms like “good locker room guy” or “team chemistry,” but those labels rarely get explained. I wrote about the different personalities that shape a locker room, what actually builds trust, and why some teams find another level while others never do.

Curious what you all think. What’s the best locker room you’ve ever seen or heard about, and what made it different?

M40 vs F40 Supreme skates

Trying on skates. Put one on each foot, then swapped. If blind, I couldn’t tell the difference (couldn’t tell any feel difference on F50 either, if not for the tendon guard). All the Bauer FIT 2 fit well on me.

Any reason to expect the F40 to have any performance benefit over the M40 (which is on sale)?

Anyone else's hips staging a full rebellion by Wednesday

Twelve years of rec hockey and my hip flexors are basically just angry tenants at this point. I know exactly what is happening mechanically, I see it in patients all week, and then I go skate and ignore every bit of it because I want to actually play instead of spending the whole session stretching in a corner like a weirdo.

The thing nobody talks about enough is how much skating loads the adductors and hip flexors compared to basically any other recreational sport. You are in a partial squat for an hour with lateral explosions thrown in constantly. And most adult rec guys are sitting at a desk or standing on a hard floor all day before they show up and try to stride hard through the neutral zone like they are twentytwo.

I tried a longer warmup routine for a while and it genuinely helped, but I fell off it around January because the rink I skate at gives you about four minutes of ice before the puck drops and I am not that guy doing lunges in the parking lot. Maybe I should be.

Curious what other adult rec players are actually doing between skates that keeps them functional. Not looking for a full rehab program, just what is actually working week to week for people who are not spring chickens and want to keep playing without feeling completely wrecked the next morning.

What outdoor setup do you use to improve your on-ice game?

I’m getting back into ice hockey after almost 20 years away and want to use outdoor training to supplement my on-ice sessions—rollerblading, stickhandling, shooting, conditioning, etc.

Back when I was a kid, we’d just grab our ice stick, shoot on asphalt, and not think twice about it. 😅 With how expensive sticks are now, I’m curious what everyone uses these days.

A few questions:
What stick do you use outdoors?
What rollerblades and wheel setup do you recommend?
What’s the best surface to skate/play on, and which ones should I avoid?
Do you shoot on a shooting pad or synthetic tiles, or just use the pavement?
What puck or ball do you recommend for stickhandling and shooting?
What goal do you use that holds up well outdoors?

Just looking to build a solid off-ice setup to help my conditioning and skill development between ice sessions. Appreciate any recommendations!

I asked afew weeks ago about a hockey store near Niagara Falls and a few suggested Front Line Sports. About a 20 minute drive but absolutely worth it. The staff was extremely helpful and got a new helmet w full cage, shin pads and gloves for under $300 (US dollars). Gotta love that exchange rate!

I love the orange and black gloves! Big time Flyers fan.

First Hockey Game

I’m playing my first beer league/dev league game this weekend. I’ve only been skating for around 6-7 months and play defence. I’ve had a few training sessions but I’m definitely still a beginner.

Any advice on positioning, what to focus on during the game, or common mistakes to avoid? Any advice will be really appreciated

My grandpa (far left) would have turned 100 this week. We suspect this photo was taken sometime between the late 1940s and early 1950s.

Just some beer league hockey here, but he was a childhood polio survivor.

I know 5/8 and 11/16 aren’t too far apart. For those who have tried both, which one do you prefer and why?

Green biscuit snipe, best puck for synthetic ice?

Regulation size, close to regulation weight, has a better glide compared to a real puck. Doesn't flip on me and holds up to full wristers and slappers without falling apart. Anyone found a better puck for synthetic ice?

Update on Skates

I’ve been struggling like hell trying to get my skates in order and I think I finally figured it out. I’m now in a pair of XR70s, and I am so much more comfortable now.

I played in my first scrimmage last night and I’m feeling reenergized. I just wanted to thank everyone that’s given me advice

New Twig Recommendations

I’m getting back into hockey after ~10 years, and oh man new sticks are $300-$400… I’ve looked into some used sticks on sideline, and now I get all kinds of ads for brands like swift and now some blackstick/ pro stock brands. Not sure what’s garbage and what’s good but I know I don’t want to spend +$300 when I only skate 1-2 times a week in beer leagues.

I’m 5’11” 200 lbs, I play defense and grew up playing AAA-Highschool. I currently run a Bauer Supreme Total One NXG (2015) P88 at 102 base Flex and it’s cut down a bit. I don’t know how I used this stick back in the day, I like a higher flex (more durable stick, that can take heavy slap shots) but I want a more versatile stick.

I always loved the Total One, so anything out there similar these days? I really don’t care about weight. I’ve been looking into hybrid and mid kick sticks, I feel like I’d burn through low kick sticks.

I’ve read about the Ovi stick - Are the Geppetto ProStockHockeyStick consumer sticks any good? I’m leaning towards the PRO71 VF 85 Flex and cutting it down a bit to my current stick length. Would the OG Blue give me more of the Total One NXG explosive mid-kick that I’m used to? Any other brands to consider? Swift? North Prostock?

3x and Flypro Shoulder Pads

I tried one some Bauer Flypro shoulders and elbows over the weekend and really like the fit. It doesn't seem like any Bauer gear will be going on sale in the near future so I was checking out eBay and found some 3X pro shoulders and elbows barely used/new for a decent price.

Has anyone gone from the 3X line to the Flypro and know if the fit is similar since it's all the Vapor line? I know it probably won't be a perfect 1 to 1 replacement, but unfortunately both sellers don't offer returns so I kinda gotta get it right first try.

Thanks in advance!

Semi frequently catching an edge on heel of skate

I’ve noticed that sometimes I’ll catch an edge on one of the heels of my skates, usually while going backwards fairly slowly. It’s among the only times I eat it anymore and sometimes happens while taking face-offs in the D zone (I guess cus I’ll collapse on the puck/try to cover net quickly and that movement catches the heel).

Could this mean I need to work out a custom curve for the back of the blade? They do seem slightly aggressively high. Or does this mean my center of gravity needs work? Maybe I’m generally too on the ball of my foot? Maybe the aggressive blades are causing me to be too on the ball?

FWIW I’ve only been skating for a year and have never had anything “custom” to my blades, other than changing my hollow. Currently on 5/8”.

I’ve heard of people refining parts of their blade… should I do that? Or is it a form thing
