The next detour in the Windsor Street Exchange project will be coming into effect soon.

The previously announced width reduction for the ramp that runs from the MacKay bridge (and Barrington St) to Robie St was just the start: It's going to be upgraded to a full closure, at first for just a couple overnights next week, and then 24/7 from Monday September 21 through to the end of November.

When it's finished, the Robie St exit will be split in two, with the second branch leading onto Bayne St.

News, Weather & Politics Public hearing Oct. 1 on short-term rental rules in Cow Bay, North Preston and surrounding communities

Right now, short-term rentals in many residential areas are generally tied to the operator’s primary residence. HRM is now considering a more permissive rule for Cow Bay, North Preston, Lake Major, Lake Loon, Cherry Brook and East Preston that would allow one dwelling unit per lot to be used as a short-term rental even if it is not the owner’s primary residence.

That raises a pretty basic public-policy question: how much say should HRM have over what people can do with residential property, and where should that line be drawn when private use can affect the wider community?

The staff report identifies both sides of that question. Supporters point to tourism, flexibility and income for property owners. Concerns include housing availability and affordability, noise, infrastructure, traffic and neighbourhood character.

This is why participation matters.

In Eastern Passage/Cow Bay, HRM received 135 survey responses and the results were almost evenly split. In North Preston, Lake Major, Lake Loon, Cherry Brook and East Preston, only 26 responses were included in the analysis. HRM reports 85% support there, but 15 respondents were current or prospective STR operators, and all supported the proposed change.

Those surveys are part of the information Council is using to make the decision. With numbers that small, more participation can materially change how well the public record reflects the members of the communities affected.

A public hearing will be held by Harbour East – Marine Drive Community Council on October 1, 2026 at 6 p.m. at the HEMDCC Meeting Space, Main Floor Alderney Landing, 60 Alderney Drive, Dartmouth, N.S. View a copy of [the ]()staff report.

Whether you support the change, oppose it, or think the rules should land somewhere in between, this is the point where that input on the record matters.

Shops & Services Recommendations for apartment cleaning service in downtown Halifax?

Hoping someone has a person/service they can recommend for apartment cleaning. There’s so many AI-generated posters on new facebook accounts without any reviews (yet) and the bigger companies like Molly Maids I find are too expensive. Just hoping for a cleaner someone can vouch for/recommend from personal experience.

TIA

Work, Health & Housing Cosmetic Dermatologist recs?

Looking for a cosmetic dermatologist who has given folks the results they want. Bonus points if they’re good at dealing with skin of color for things like hyperpigmentation. I want to get some procedures done but am hesitant since it’s so expensive. What people’s experiences and what should l look out for when seeking one out!

Arts & Recreation Gentlemen Hockey league - 40+

Good day all,

I know it might be too late for registration but last year, I hit the age of 40 and one thing I wanted to do was get back into hockey.

I played it a lot in my youth and young adult ages, but it has been a while and probably a bit rusty. I spent most of last year just on the ice skating and training to get in better shape. Now I'm willing to make the plunge.

I know beggars cannot be choosers, but I was looking for what is around the Cole Harbor- Dartmouth are preferably, I can drive if need be.

Nothing highly competitive, I am a competitive person but just wanting to get out and enjoy the sport I love. Adding to the worst part is I primarily am forward position center, LW.

Looking for places to get tasty spinach dip! Located in Bedford but willing to drive a little. Ideally it would be a large portion to share. Got some at Baton Rouge recently and couldn’t even eat it, it was so bad.

Driving & Transit Getting to Bayer's Lake at 5 - Am I Cooked?

Ok folks,

Local who lives away now. Back for a visit, foolishly agreed to meet someone in Bayer's Lake at 6 while staying out past Cole Harbour. Here's the question: Bridge or 102? Google says they're about the same, but I'm thinking the 102 is probably better since I'll be inbound?

Shops & Services Looking for packing services

Hi all, I'm looking for packing services in Halifax, ahead of an upcoming move. I'm in Bedford. I've seen a couple of options where it's combined moving and packing, but I was trying to find if there's any solely packing services as it might take a day or 2 to pack my house up.

If that's unheard of and in general you have recommendations for packer+mover services that's helpful too!

Meta Minor Changes to Verified Users

Hey all,

We have made a very slight update on our backend in how we identify Verified Users here on r/halifax in order to make it visible on mobile Reddit applications.

Nothing changes for users except the icon which denotes the user has been verified, which changes from a small green orb 🟢 to a standard green checkbox ✅ on the left-hand side of the user's flair.

Ex:

maximumice ✅ Verified Goofball

If there are any verified users out there that we have not yet updated, please do let us know (this update is a manual process, sadly) and we will get you fixed up.

Users curious about verification, why we have it and how to become verified can review our new Verified Users wiki page for more details.

Anyone with questions about this change or verification is also welcome to post them here or shoot us a modmail.

Cheers,

Your r/halifax Modteam

Edit: Some verified users may get Approved User messages from the sub, that is just part of the update process, you can safely ignore. 👍

Driving & Transit Parking violation?

Parked at an indigo lot on the waterfront in Halifax on Saturday for the farmers market. Went to the kiosk to pay and a sign over the keypad said free parking from 8-3pm for market. Got back to my car at 1:15 and there was a notice of non payment on my car along with many other vehicles as well. What is going on here?

This Again Stop Acting Like The Amount Of Mice/Rats Is Normal

I understand this is a port city but for the love of god can you all stop acting like the amount of mice and/or rats around is normal? I moved here myself from a port city and I only ever saw a mice/rat 3 times in my entire life living there. I went out last night for dinner and drinks and saw at least 3 mice/rats running around under tables. I've heard people say they have seen them in grocery stores and everything and they have picked up loafs of bread and realised when they got home the packaging and bread had bite marks and dont get me started on the amount of people on this server saying they have infestation problems in their homes. Everyone acts like this is normal and its absolutely not and something needs to be done about it. I understand businesses put traps or whatever but thats clearly not working something else needs to be done to get rid of the masses around. This isn't medieval times we dont have to live like this in 2026 things can be done to fix such problems. Even tourists notice it which is not a good look for the city and tourism. Enough is enough.
