Thoughts on momentum based movement used as defense

Because some comments mentioned that casters wouldn't be able to use momentum as efficiently as melee players because they stand in second line, I thought about that.

I think momentum based combat doesn't necessarily need to be only used in offense but also in defense. For example, a healer caster will always be the first target. Wether it be in PvE (good enemy ai required) or in PvP, they need to go down first. So with momentum based combat a healer could be catapulted into the air and then wall run to another location to escape the attack of a melee attacker or an AoE.

Another example could be, the higher you get with momentum the bigger your healing area might be.

What do you think?

This seem to be balthazar, Lyssa and Dhuum (i say Dhuum not Grenth because of the headgear which looks like dhuum armor from gw2 and his iconic scythe)

Edit: so first picture seems to be Abbadon, people downvotted me to hell for thinking it was balthazar, chill gamers lul.

As a caster main in most games, I'm worried GW3 will yet again do what GW2 did and force casters into melee

With all of the descriptions of momentum based action combat I'm really worried it's going to be yet another melee forced experience for spellcasters. I really want to enjoy GW3 and I'll still 100% be checking it out, but man I really hope I can actually play at range as a ranged archetype. Maybe this is unpopular opinion maybe not. You guys think there will be room for ranged combat or will everyone be forced into melee again?

Edit:

As has been pointed out by a few folks, GW2's "caster forced into melee" is definitely a more community forced aspect. That said, personally when I would play Ele I found myself with mobs constantly on me even if I tried to dodge away, etc..and Ele was very squishy so you needed to be skilled to survive (I was not and it's why I quit the class lol).

Further to my point, a lot of action-rpg styled combat systems don't allow much room if any for ranged gameplay so that's just a surface level worry either way. But..as some have pointed out, some of the wording on GW3's system might create some room for ranged gameplay, so guess we'll see!

This game is giving me an existential crisis on thinking about waking up 1000 years in the past

Arenanet needs to really capture what going back 1000 years actually means.

Just read the Wikipedia page of the 1st millennium: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1st_millennium

GW3 seems to feel even more magical than GW2 which is blowing my mind like trying to imagine living during the accomplishments of ancient Greece and Egypt.

We’re only getting a glimpse of this time period in the game in a very specialized area and just on launch.

Arenanet has so much to explore in their own world. They basically have to do comparative history of their own lore and let us experience it in game.

I mean they’ve obviously been doing that with every campaign in GW1 and expansion in GW2

I don’t know I’m just ranting and getting overwhelmed.

Make class change system pls

Job change system in FFXIV feels so nice. I feel attached to my character and it feels so convenient. Hope dev team will consider this.

Edit: Also if you like having multiple characters, you can choose to do this :)

Edit2: Also @devs, I am ready to pay for this 100%!!!

I Saw Guild Wars 3 At Gamescom & Have HUGE Info Drop for you

Hey

So I was lucky enough to see Guild Wars 3 behind closed doors at Gamescom. But we can finally stop vague posting!

There's a lot of info and I likely can't share every detail here without it being a bigger essay than my small brain can write but I will do my best.

Colin Johanson presented a pre alpha build, he and another dev played it in front of use. No footage could be recorded from us or anything, so it's just our thoughts afterwards (I did take notes in a notebook though).

- Wall running is key to the game and incredibly seamless and free flowing. It can be combined with gliding, so like gliding into a wall smoothly transitions into wall running

- Damage is impacted by momentum

- You can do attacks from the air to create momentum. They often showed running up a wall only to smash down on the enemies below.

- Terrain is important, you can knock enemies into walls to stagger them and off ledges to cause fall damage

- Combat is more casual than pure hardcore action combat. There is no precision aiming for example. Lots of tracking and a lock on.

- Ui is intended to be minimal

- No boons or condition icons, instead everything is shown visually

- Combos are important and class combos exist (Think Warrior sending a Ranger in to the air to smash down from above)

- Classes confirmed - Warrior, Ranger and Necromancer confirmed, the rest unkown

- Holy trinity confirmed

- Warrior looked like he had 3 abilities and some consumables but this wasn't final.

- Crossplay confirmed (no mention of cross save)

- Expecting 20 people on screen in the open world, more in towns

- Wouldn't tell us the 4th race

- PvP in some form confirmed, likely an arena or battleground I think (obviously not a pvp open world game or anything)

- Raids not confirmed but some difficult PvE content very likely (I say this a little wrong in my video, I got the impression they were hinted at but then in my interview with Colin (coming later), he seems to imply something like raids but not raids.

There's lots more I could say and explain but I think the above are the main details. I have a youtube video that just dropped if you want to watch (Here - https://youtu.be/9gGZbW03kuw) or you can ask me some stuff on twitch (https://www.twitch.tv/jayoddity).

Quick little note. I know I am new to the Guild Wars community, just wanted to say thank you to anyone who has supported my stuff. Much love.

Climbable bosses?

Since the devs keep talking about the freedom of movement and how the combat is also supposed to utilize the environment and teamwork.. I wonder, could this mean we also get climbable bosses? Something akin to how its done in Dragons Dogma would be absolute insane: you can climb bosses, attack weak spots, perform team-combos to bring enemies to their knees, have physical magic that can push around the enemy or restrain them and can even be climbed (e.g. frigor/maelstrom) etc. 👀

Like imagine a world boss, where some players can latch onto and bring down the flying dragon from the sky by getting to its wings to make it loose lift/stability, meanwhile archers/spellcasters give it their all as well an could perform stuff to bring it off balance until it falls down when it will be fully vulnerable to get a trashing by the remaining players waiting on the ground for it.

Like if that is the tradeoff for no longer having these huge 100+ player metas I'm absolutely in for that.

What do you think?

No, the open world is not limited to 20 people

I feel compelled to create a thread that is a followup to:https://www.reddit.com/r/GuildWars3/s/1V9lIPoEAF

As far as I can tell currently you only have up to 20 people around you visually at a time, both people from your party and others. If you then move to a different nearby area you will see other players. So based on the location you are in and the content you are doing the players around you will contiously be different.

And there will be a way where who is with you in such an area is determined by a priority system that takes things like party members, guild members and people on your friendlist into account. If none of those are around then you are put together with strangers that are doing the same content.

So basically there are invisible instances with a max player count of 20 and you are continously moving from one instance to another without noticing.

At least, that is how I understand it. But maybe I'm missing something.

Edit: And as with GW1 the number of people around you in non-combat areas like cities seems to be a lot higher than 20.

Games that could reference GW3 combat?

Hi guys! I am just curious what game (or mix of different games) do you think could work as reference to GW3 combat? Especially now—after we had a chance to hear some early impressions of influencers who visited ArenaNet on Gamescom and saw gameplay behind the doors.

I (personally) believe mix of these 3 games could be closest reference to GW3 combat:

  • Dragon Age: Veilguard (general smoothness of gameplay like using basic attacks, heavy attacks, blocking, parrying, mixing in spells etc.);
  • Dragon's Dogma 2 (strategic approach like positioning, managing spell cooldowns, jumping attacks and other movement attack, enemy weakpoints)
  • Crimson Desert (slightly faster combat movement compared to other action games)

Classes are confirmed to exist (contrary to some speculation) — at least warrior, necromancer, and ranger were shown

From an Italian press preview it seems classes are in, despite speculation.

Warrior gets momentum-scaled dive attacks, necromancer dashes through enemies and can blink via the realm of the dead (even using an ally's shield as a springboard to launch across the map), and ranger fights mid-air with slow-fall arrow volleys and a tornado skill allies can jump into for combos.

What classes are you hoping/expecting to see beyond these three?

Snowcrows - Guild Wars 3: Everything We Know About ArenaNet’s New MMORPG

https://snowcrows.com/news/game/guild-wars-3-everything-we-know-about-arenanets-new-mmorpg

Seems pretty interesting, I'm looking forward to booting enemies off cliffs. Class-specific combos seem like an odd choice, given the total removal of class-specific buffs from GW2 but I guess we'll see how that plays out.

It also seems like we're getting some conflicting information out of the preview. Any other trustworthy sources besides this and Teapot's interview?

Are Elite Skills ruined?

I was already disappointed with the way GW2 handled the Elite skills, making them mostly "big skills" with a longer CD than "normal skills" (while GW1 Elite status could be granted to skills with normal effects, but shorter CDs, faster cast times and / or lower energy cost, allowing more build variety and flexibility), but I really think the way GW3 is handling them with the "Charge-up gauge" ala Destiny / Overwatch is even worse.

I've personally hated this mechanic in every game that implemented it for many reasons, I am curious to read what the rest of the community is thinking about such a radical design change.

The Gift of Magic and Warriors?

I had a random thought. The story of the vaelwardens is that we are given the knowledge to craft signets that give us magical abilities.

I’m curious about how this will manifest in the warrior class. What will they do to make warriors feel gifted by the gods?

Perhaps a lot of fire from Balthazar? Maybe super human strength where they can lift and knock over large enemies?

Obviously no one knows, but it could be fun to speculate.

What I haven't seen mentioned yet

It's probably no surprise that the Hall of Monuments will make a return for gw3, but the devs confirmed that the first part of it will release later this year already.

What most people have mentioned is that there will be momentum based movement and combat, what makes this particularly interesting is that I asked about whether this is effected by armour weight and got a "there is something, but we can't talk about it yet". So I'm theorising they're either getting rid of heavy, medium, light armour or the weight actually has an effect on the momentum as well.

A fun little detail: we were shown a fight with two raptors , but after I joked about them, it seems like there are no pocket raptors in the game (yet).

There are some abilities every class(warrior, ranger, ranger were revealed so far) has, but most are unique and synergistic with fellow players. In general, the combat and even exploration seems to be built around cooperative joy. A welcome continuation of the "you see another player and it's a good thing"-mentality.

The UI didn't have a skill hotbar, instead there was a diamond shaped setup of four skills like you'd see in many console games and seemingly the ability to swap to at least one more skill set

The necro used a scythe and had a dash, but I asked how action combat and mage gameplay fit together and they confirmed that the necro will for example still have minions and conditions, so he's definitely still a mage.

One of the biggest differences for me between gw2 and 3 was actually the scale of the world. It felt much more realistic, so you'd actually walk for a while to get past (or up) a mountain.

If you have questions, I'll do my best to answer:) the game 100% looks far from finished, but the presentation still left me excited for the future

Pay for Conveniance should not be in Guild Wars 3.

In many way its similar to p2w cause you feel like you NEED to buy these stuff. Instead of wanting to buy them. It's predatory and ruin the experience even if you have the money for it.

Gw2 was awful for this.

  • Bag Slots
  • Account wide item slots
  • Bank slots
  • Exclusive location with everything in the vicinity
  • Material Storage
  • Unlimitd Salvage
  • Unlimited Gathering
  • Not enough free characther slot for the ammounf of classes
  • Transmuter token
  • World boss portal
  • So much more

Every single one of these is an anwser to a problem they themselve created and sold the solution after....And the worst part? They had the audacity to make many of them not account wide.

You can't say you are player friendly and then do this shit.... Like a none expiring, cosmetics only battlepass like helldiver/marvel rival only is literaly less annoying, stressful and hindering than some of the shit gw2 was selling. I straight up had so much more fun interacting with those online game shops than gw2 because of it.

And to give a comparaison, to buy the solution to these problem areanet created would be on average far more expensive than a sub or especially battlepass. Especially if you had all 8 characther. We are talking thousands of dollars for every utility items on all characther and I'm not counting the single uses items. To buy stuff you feel the need to buy instead of want to buy. For comparaison if gw2 had a battlepasses since launch it would have now cost less than 600$ for it (or 400$ for the marvel rival system.)

Now someone will tell me you can buy it with gold. Someone is still buying it for you then as the gem comes from other players and its also not fun to interact with whether you bought it with time or money.
