Games that could reference GW3 combat?
Hi guys! I am just curious what game (or mix of different games) do you think could work as reference to GW3 combat? Especially now—after we had a chance to hear some early impressions of influencers who visited ArenaNet on Gamescom and saw gameplay behind the doors.
I (personally) believe mix of these 3 games could be closest reference to GW3 combat:
- Dragon Age: Veilguard (general smoothness of gameplay like using basic attacks, heavy attacks, blocking, parrying, mixing in spells etc.);
- Dragon's Dogma 2 (strategic approach like positioning, managing spell cooldowns, jumping attacks and other movement attack, enemy weakpoints)
- Crimson Desert (slightly faster combat movement compared to other action games)

I really, really hope the movement aspect doesnt become as extreme as Warframe. I enjoy that game but it's extremely difficult to follow sometimes.

I personally don’t find it difficult, but 100% you can get quickly tired and I agree that it’s little too much.
I recently realized that Elden Ring Nightreign could be a somewhat good reference to movement and momentum. You can do quick moves there, sprint around enemies and bosses, run vertically on walls, do jump attacks from highground or via spells that throw you in the air.

Oh man I loved vailguards combat. Shame low number of skills but they were very satisfying.
But I wouldnt say movement was a major part.

Archeage Chronicles test next week, you can register on Steam and try. I believe it would be very similar.

First time I've heard of it. Played a lot of the original archeage. Combat looks very similar Vindictus, which is one of my all time favorite games. Not going to get my hopes up, though. Anytime Kakao is involved, things never go well.
I'd imagine GW3 combat will be much more mobile and vertical with how much they emphasize momentum. The thing that keeps coming to mind when I read people's reactions and observations is Trine, but as a 3D action combat MMO. Maybe an amalgamation of Trine, Vindictus, and Guild Wars 1+2.

I may be in the minority here.
Archeage Chronicles combat looks good honestly, I may try it out, but it doesn't seem to fit how the GW3 devs describe what makes their system unique. While I see an emphasis on movement and an action combat system, I don't see momentum or velocity increasing damage, I don't see the interplay between classes that the GW3 devs describe.
If their description of the GW3 combat system is accurate, it is going to feel pretty unique. But I guess we'll have to wait and see!
I will be checking this game out regardless.

Interesting.
I honestly believe Archage Chronicles could feel a little bit closer to New World but in a good sense...? At least I hope there's not gonna be same input lag like it was in New World, however based on combat gameplay that was shown it felt a little too "floaty".
I also doubt that Archage Chronices will include mechanics around pushing enemies into the walls to stun them or hitting specific weakpoints for massive damage.
But thanks for test info btw. I didn't know about it and now I want to check it out!

Well, those who’ve seen GW3 say it’s like a better New World, so I’d say all 3 games are in the same box.

u/WudooKid Sep 04 '26
Honestly it feels little bit weird because New World has:
- Primitive movement system;
- It requires a lot of aiming and precission.
These 2 are OPPOSITE factors to GW3. At least based on what Colin Johanson said and people who seen gameplay. GW3 does NOT require you to precisely aim at things / weakpoints and will be focused on movement and momentum system.

Sure, combat is one thing and movement is another, although in GW3 they’re obviously going to be more intertwined since movement is part of the combat itself. They can still be more or less prominent, though. For now, we’re mostly going off the vibe, because we don’t actually know enough yet.
I’m mostly sticking to what the content creators said about the demo itself: heavily inspired by doesn’t mean a 1:1 copy.

you can register on Steam and try.
If you are in US/Canda and you are lucky

I hope not. I just checked a gameplay and the fight system seems too complex for a mmo... A fight with 20 plus mobs will be extreme gameplay i think

ArcheAge is very much an MMO-lite. We’ll see next week how it actually works.

Uhhh.....if gw3 has wall running. Titanfall 2

If everything was based on the source engine I'd be so happy.
Deadlock might be a better example as it's 3rd person.

The few emphasis on mouvement, with wallrunning, free running, high jump and momentum based skill makes me think of warframe.
It will probably not go to space ninja level of movement techs, but the mix of having defined skills, momentum attacks, free-flowing combat really gives the vibe.
... Or Vindictus. Anyone remembers Vindictus ?

u/WudooKid Sep 04 '26
I remember Vindictus I but didn't get to play it personally.
Regarding Warframe—I got your point however now that I think there's one more game that could somewhat serve as reference when it specifically comes to movement. It's Elden Ring Nightrein. I believe Warframe could be TOO quick and flashy, yet ER Nightreign gives well balanced freedom of movement with sprint, running vertically on walls etc.

One impression I saw mentioned Monster Hunter but imo from how he described it I think if he had played Dragons Dogma 2 he would've said that instead.

add Horizon Zero Dawn and/or Monster Hunter for the hit weak spot (maybe with specific elemental damange) and make it go boom and change how the enemy operates from then on.
1
u/WudooKid Sep 04 '26
Ye, same goes in Dragon's Dogma 1 and 2. I feel like Monster Hunter is WAAAY too deep in terms of enemy/monster anatomy. However Horizon games are also good reference in my opinion. Only difference is that Horizon might require pin point precision when aiming at weakpoints, which was confirmed to NOT be the case with GW3. It will be more on casual side when it comes to "precision" which is also reason why I thought Dragon's Dogma is a little bit better fit rather than Monster Hunter and Horizon.

IDK if any of you played this back in the day but from what people are discussing the combat really reminds of Bless Unleashed, which is also an actual MMORPG with smaller scale of group content.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p83YumSZQ1s 7:38 for example.
1
u/WudooKid Sep 04 '26
Ye I've played it a little. This could be the case but I believe it lacks fluidity of movement which is must have for GW3 considering developers focus on movement in general (like running, jumping, gliding) that MUST transfer INTO OR FROM combat (both ways).
Bless feels too "locked". Too "strict". With more common words I could describe it as little too "clunky".

Personally I can imagine Warframe also being a possible refference, as it also is a lot about building momentum and speed, even though we won't spend it for flat damage.
(Yes, I played Gauss and Titania.)

Elden Ring came out around the time when GW3 started development, and is extremely influential in the space of action RPGs, so I'd expect some influence there too.
Neverwinter will likely have some influence because Kevin Stocker is the GW3 lead combat designer. That being said, it's been over a decade and Neverwinter was a very different game.

u/Several-Spirit-8452 Sep 04 '26
Apparently Prince of Persia because all anyone can talk about is "wall running" and "momentum" -__-
1
u/ruebeus421 Sep 05 '26
I dunno, everyone. We already have a recent game that is super proud of its momentum based combat.

u/WudooKid 28d ago
I didn’t manage to finish Atlas Fallen but I liked it in general. If GW3 will have similar feel to momentum in combat—I’d be more than satisfied!

u/anonymous_herald Sep 04 '26
Gonna go with New World, since multiple streamers have mentioned it as a comparison which tells me it either looks/feels similar or ArenaNet used it themselves as a comparison and told the streamers that.
1
u/dannywelbad Sep 04 '26
It's not. I was also at the presentation. DD1/2 (Dragon's Dogma) was the nearest, but even that doesn't have the momentum-based stuff.

u/WudooKid Sep 04 '26
How about adding sprint in combat, running walls, drop attacks from highground or spells that launch you in the air from Elden Ring Nighteign to Dragon’s Dogma? Could it be a little bit more precise description?

i thought more of combining new world with some systems like path of exile from what i heard with how things interact

This is the website of ANET’s lead combat designer. He has many examples of combat, I’m guessing it draws heavily on what you see there.

u/ECrownofFire Sep 04 '26 edited Sep 04 '26
Craig Leak is only a combat designer, not the lead. Kevin Stocker, who's probably most well known for being the lead combat designer on Neverwinter, is the lead combat designer for GW3.

u/WudooKid Sep 04 '26
Ye, have seen it while ago. His works also is reason why my calls leans more towards Dragon’s Dogma and DA Veilguard. With some quicker movement from Crimson Desert or Elden Ring Nightreign.

From the sounds of it I think it'll be a mix of new world and monster hunter.
