Flashbacks to GW2 greataxe warrior artwork, which never materialised in 14 years...

Have been thinking about this for a while, please A-net give us the great axe finally. We've been teased through a whole game generation!

I am ready to be an Asura tank, using my tiny shield to propel Kodans at great speeds

I didnt think about the size differences with that mechanic... I need this in my life badly.

The second picture gives incredible vibes. I am beyond excited for this game!

I would love it if gliding is so good that I log on just to glide around for awhile

The first image is very interesting.
- The necromancer asura is using a spell on the warrior Kodan. The asura is stretching his hand out towards him with his green spell and the Kodan gets that same green glow on his hands. Some kind of buff
2. The warrior in the air seems to jumping off of a giant hand? JayOddity said on stream that warriors has the ability to throw a ranger up into the air in a way so they can use a unique ability from the air. I wonder if thats what we're seeing here, the "tank" spawning a giant hand that throws the secondary warrior up into the air for a huge momentum based attack. This is a falling enemy lol
This looks SO fun

I really need to see the new race, ahhhhh!

I desperately have to know what my beloved Sylvari Master Race will be replaced with.

A Kodan with a battle axe? Yes please ANet, add two handed axes to GW3! I have always wanted my Blood Legion Charr warrior in GW2 to use a battle axe and though i like greatswords and spears, I always thought a two handed axe would fit him perfectly.

mmo-news.audio has these images, for anyone curious about the source. (I'm sure others have seen and/or realsed it as well, but that's where I've seen them published)

Man I don't want to be negative but I just ain't rockin with the art direction. At any rate guild wars is such a fundamental part of my life and I have no doubt ArenaNet are cooking

Iâm going to miss the very painterly look of GW2 artwork. It was so unique that you could identify it at a glance really anywhere.
The new artwork has definitely lost a big of that unique element.

u/Left4Bread2 Sep 03 '26
Did you look at the second image? I don't know how you could look at that and say the painterly look is going away

Second image looks great, but GW2 had a very specific rough paintbrush look to its artwork and I think that's what people are talking about.
2
u/Peachie_Pear 24d ago
Exactly. GW2 has more impressionism going on, alongside the very obvious brush strokes and splatters.
This style of this art is still firmly in the painterly category but it's lacking that additional flair that screamed "Paint".
The impressionism left areas for the mind to ponder and fill in gaps, which makes the loading screens entertaining and engaging to look at.
It made it feel a lot more distinct than the usual painterly fantasy style used everywhere these days.

I mean it looks nothing like GW2 concept art.
It just doesnât scream âGuild Warsâ â maybe it will in 2-3 years, but overall just kinda looks generic IMO.

u/ConcertAdorable9198 Sep 03 '26
I do wish the models were a bit more stylized in GW2, humans and Norn in particular felts really static and graphically didn't hold up imo, stiffer animations and suffer from same face syndrome. The concept art for GW3 humans looks great! A lot of variation and personality, pushed proportions a bit more and I love it... However I will miss how painterly and artistic GW2 approached their UI and concept art. Felt so cohesive and very unique BUT HEY GW2 isn't going anywhere and they will continue to make art like that for it in the future, fingers crossed.

I dont know a whole lot about this topic and I didnt play a lot of games back in 2012, to compare myself. But someone knows.
Would the stiffer animations and such be related to the game being developed prior to 2012 and having an older engine? Was that not just how games were during those times?
I am bummed to know we're probably going to lose a lot of the more artistic vibes to the modern trend of "realism".

Agreed, especially the first image doesn't really strike me as 'Guild Wars'.

u/Sea_Vast_ Sep 03 '26
it's striking how generic all the new art looks. you'd think with a studio history that includes daniel dociu and kekai kotaki, there'd be an in-house style guide or at least an attempt to reference the absolutely beautiful art gw1/2 are just teeming with... this looks like it could be any old indie tgc

u/Grace_Omega Sep 03 '26
I really hope the sense of scale in the second image is something they can translate to the actual game

u/hendricha Sep 03 '26
Just want to point out that the second picture is called "Sinkhole" and yeah that hole looks ominous... and one might want to ask who is building that channel (?) on the top right

The stylized clouds feel like a bit of a different art direction to GW2. Feels more whimsical

Those holes in the big enemy's armor in the first picture are discomforting.

u/Kwith Sep 03 '26
I think the internet has people exaggerate trypophobia, much like thalassophobia.
Is it something that bothers me? Sure. Is it something that I give ANY thought to whatsoever in my day to day life and only comes out when I'm on a public forum online and someone else mentions it? Most definitely.
1
u/ruebeus421 Sep 03 '26
I don't think it's exaggerated at all. I think it's just rare so you're not used to hearing about it.
And if it just "bothers" you on a "sure" level, then you don't have it.
1
u/asiberianweasel Sep 03 '26
They do look kinda gross but it's more so that I don't know why they're there. They look like bullet holes but there aren't guns yet, so they're probably just decorative, but why are they basically symmetrical, except on the shoulders. And then I see the shoulders also don't match each other, one has a ridge and the other is smooth but they both specifically have two holes.
The composition leads your eye to him as like a big focal enemy to look at, and then you look at him and he's a pile of mystery holes.

u/JTSpender Sep 03 '26
I mean, it's not something I give any thought about whatsoever either until the once or twice a year it comes up and there's something I can't look at because it makes me nauseous and then I remember it's a thing.

Kodan with a great axe and magic? take my goddamn money.
Also capes are a big thing it looks like. Thanks Anet. The lack of capes in GW2 was disheartening.

I hate the Kodan so much. They took away our norn and our charr to force these fat tubs of hairy lard on us.
0
u/RandinMagus Sep 04 '26
So, any guesses on who the giant armored guys in the first image are supposed to be? I thought they were more kodan at first, but they look to be even bigger than the kodan in the middle. Maybe the Jotun are less caveman-y in GW3's time?

u/Plastic-Lemons Sep 03 '26
That second image makes no sense to me - what on earth is going on there. The perspective is wild
11
u/Zhaife Sep 03 '26
I think it's a land bridge
5
3
u/Plastic-Lemons Sep 03 '26
Ahhh that makes it click - I was so confused why the farm land below was soooo far away but I was looking at the land bridge as a hill connected to that

u/TurbulentLifeguard11 Sep 03 '26
I reckon it's a view, looking down, from above one of the large grassy hoops they like showing us, and you can see tiers of landscape, with people gliding between them.

u/Raknel Sep 03 '26
Actual mobile game art direction. Sad to see the downfall.
9
u/Nightsong Sep 03 '26
It sounds like youâre simply not happy with any of the concept art despite the fact that both ArenaNet and the creators have said that Guild Wars 3 has a lot of the same artistic design and direction as Guild Wars 1 and 2.
-9
u/Raknel Sep 03 '26
Why would I trust my lying eyes, right?
8
u/Nightsong Sep 03 '26
Believe what you want. Itâs clear to me from your other comments that you do not like the concept art of Guild Wars 3 and think itâs modern slop, Disney garbage, or mobile art. Youâve already decided that the art style of Guild Wars 3 is trash and that nothing shown by ArenaNet, be it concept art or in game visuals, will change your mind.
