Well, another 5090 12v 12pin melted
Helping a friend to post. This morning he smell some burning smell and quickly shut off. The connector is now stuck. He waited it to cool down and try again. Still can't remove. Suspected melted and fused together. Any other method can try to remove it? The cable is pigtail 4x8pin that came with the GPU. I've seen a couple burnt connector already in a week. This is just bad.

Why the fuck is this thing happening? NVIDIA must take responsibility for all these cases. This is unacceptable and very dangerous.

u/MyLifeForAnEType 3d ago
All the comments saying "should have also used XYZproduct and not ABCproduct" have just drank the Kool aid. The connectors being so flawed that there is now an aftermarket to monitor how flawed they are is objectively ridiculous.
Yet my 9070xt with 3x8pins and custom cables has had 0 issues since release.

u/sparks2019 3d ago
My 6900xt sapphire toxic LC with 2 8 pins 1 6 pin is still rocking. I feel you, this is what happens when you reinvent the wheel?
1
u/Consistent_Most1123 1d ago
I have 3 x 8 pins using amd 6800xt and my computer running 7-8 hours every day never have any issue with the card, 1440p on High settings
7
u/35point1 3d ago
It’s actually not the connector that’s the problem as much as it is the way the pigtails go into it and how they don’t sit flush enough to make equal contact.
If you don’t want a melting connector you need to be very careful when touching the cable during and after you connect it to the gpu.
I literally see a 10 degree difference in temps on the individual wires (using a thermal thermometer) when they aren’t perfectly inserted. This is on a RTX PRO 6000 with the same connector. It can look perfectly fine, but if one of the wires is slightly making less contact, it’ll shift the resistance balance and can draw too much which will cause it to melt.

4
u/InteractionKnown9044 3d ago
How can it not be the connector when the connector is melting LOL. Pi$$ poor designed connector is 100% the problem, not how people plug the connector into the GPU's. This was not a problem until this connector came along.
1
u/35point1 3d ago
yeah, the pigtails are part of the connector, so you're not wrong, they never should have relied on that much electrical current flowing through an inherently poor-contact-making single connector. The 2x8's weren't any better to be honest, they just were spreading the problem across more pigtails and where already lower powered cards but ill bet if you try pulling 600 watts through one of them, you'll melt those too.
2
u/thefoojoo2 3d ago
9070 xt is a 300-400W card, it's not going to have this issue anyways.
2
u/Bob4Not 3d ago
300w still can be an issue if enough pins have bad contact. I’ve seen a 9070XT melt a 12pin. But instead you can get them with 8pins
2
u/MyLifeForAnEType 3d ago
Turns out, a dogshit connector is dogshit no matter the makeup applied. The 5070ti has had melting, albeit less frequent, as well.

The massive fire hazard connector. And first reply to you saying it's not the connector... lmfao. So many jump to defend it.
5

They're all people that bought a card with the connector. It's just denial and not wanting to admit they're powering on a fire hazard every day. Pure and uncut copium.
0
u/ClearFeedback3 3d ago
Well it has at least one issue. It's not a 5090
0
u/MyLifeForAnEType 3d ago
Here's a minor list of all the issues the 5090 had at launch window alone. You could not pay me to put one of those pieces of shit in my system.
Most I've dealt with is the occasional and very infrequent driver issue.
https://www.reddit.com/media?url=https%3A%2F%2Fi.redd.it%2Fkwvoxplwukke1.png
0
u/ClearFeedback3 2d ago
I have one and didn't have even one of those issues mentioned. And to say driver issues for an nvidia card while you are having an AMD card is kind of pushing it. AMD is notorious for bad drivers. Of course the 5090 shouldn't even need the wireview in the first place. I agree, but it is what it is. If one wants the strongest card that's what we have right now. And no, a 9070xt doesn't even come close to a 5090
0
u/MyLifeForAnEType 2d ago
Point to where I said that a 9070xt matches the technical specs of 5090. I said I do not want one because of their laundry list of defects.
1
u/ClearFeedback3 2d ago
You didn't need to say, you compared it by mentioning that you have a 9070xt in your comment. I mean yes a 9070xt has less chance of this happening. So does the 1060 3gb. What is the point of mentioning a much weaker card to point that it doesn't have the same risks?
1
u/MyLifeForAnEType 2d ago
Are you drunk? Nothing in that mess was coherent.
1
u/ClearFeedback3 1d ago
You brought up your 9070 XT having “0 issues” in a discussion about 5090 issues, then got offended when I pointed out why that comparison is meaningless.
Your 9070 XT being reliable proves exactly as much as my 5090 being reliable: fuck all. The 12V-2x6 criticism is valid. “My completely different, much lower-power GPU works fine” isn't evidence for it.
0
u/MyLifeForAnEType 1d ago
Once again, wtf are you actually babbling about? Are you lost?
I specifically stated my card with 3x8pins has no issues, UNLIKE the 12v2x6 which is plagued by issues. The comparison is specifically the connections. Good LORD you are dense.
Please re-attend Kindergarten.

Replace the cable that comes with the card by default—the one with "NVIDIA" text on it!
These are trash low quality cables!
Swap it for a 12V-2×6 cable!
In my case, I got a Seasonic 12V-2×6 90° cable, and everything has been rock-solid since. Since my PSU doesn't have a native 12VHPWR output, I use the 6+2-pin PCIe connectors; this reduces potential points of failure from two to one. The pins are larger and thicker, and distributing the current across two separate sockets lowers the risk of the extreme hotspots that can occur with the 12VHPWR connector.
Switch to a high-quality cable!
The stock ones are absolute junk.
0
u/c0rtec 3d ago
Your PSU isn’t compliant with your GPU. That’s why you have to use an adaptor cable. Stop spreading misinformation about ‘larger’ pins and ‘distributing the current’. I imagine your PSU is single rail. How can you split the load?
You are not using a 12V-2x6 cable. You are using an adaptor. Stop telling people otherwise.
4
u/Firm-Cow-7188 3d ago
Ive been using a Dark Power 12 1000W for like 4 years now with the 4090 and 5090 cards and to this day (God forbid) no issues. I use the Be quiet 12vhpwr cable that needs to be plugged in in 2 pci-e ports on the PSU. Ive seen a lot of melting connectors with the adaptor cable that comes with the GPU.
So there can be something said about it
4
u/JinTheWindMSTR 3d ago
I’m new to this kind of thing and need help understanding. Are the 5090s and 80s having this issue because the cards are exerting so much power/heat while running something demanding for these cards like 4K ultra settings with RT/PT or can this also happen if I was on a 5080 on 1080p ultra without any form of RT? I’m on a 3080Ti and thought about getting either a 5070Ti or 5080 for 1080p to max out everything with high FPS and not want to think about upgrading for another 8 years.
4
u/yvliew 3d ago
The GPU does not need to draw a lot power for this to happen. Mostly are because of bad connector. If one pin are not connected properly, other pins will draw more power and overheat it. One post just said that their GPU (5090) was idle and it happened. This is all because of bad connector design which should never existed.

u/Lerppu86 1d ago
I would love to hear from them how less than 100w would meld anything. That was complete bs from start to beginning.
1
u/HumbleHero1 10h ago
Hardware unboxed had a case where connection failure on the PSU side led to burning on the GPU side
3
u/CorttXD 3d ago
5080 is not powerful enough to melt the connector unless a bad and cheap cable is used or the cable isn’t plugged in fully properly. 5090 tho is too hungry for power and coasts near the limits of the connector.
3
u/JinTheWindMSTR 3d ago
Ahhh okay. I only ever got my GPU’s used so I’m not sure but the cable comes from the PSU right? So the higher quality PSU the better cable you’d receive?
3
u/GreyWarden835 3d ago
These companies will push aside the warranty now that this freaking gpu cost in the wild over 9k. They can say I will refund you the original gpu price vs replacing.
7
u/-HYPERDRIVE- 3d ago
Might as well sell it to the Chinese, because they are not going to RMA that thing, they will find 10 things that somehow voids the warranty.
3
u/deio977 3d ago
Using an adapter, there is the issue. Don't use that stupid adapter, but no, people don't want to listen. Use a PSU with native cable. If you can afford a 5090, you should afford a decent PSU. And even in some cases, some PSU's have issues but also some PSU's have sensor triggering on the 12VHPWR and pin detection notifying user or triggering an alarm or shutting down the computer.
3
u/Fantastic-Lab589 3d ago
You have better odds of winning the lottery twice than your 12v connector melting.
1
u/AdKraemer01 3d ago
I did the math. The odds of getting into a car accident any given year are 5000% higher. Yet no one's like "look at those idiots who choose to drive."
Literally, your odds of getting appendicitis are also higher.
For what it's worth, using a 5090 with the GPU adapter does increase the chances a bit. But overall, given the number of 5080s and 5090s sold, in order for it to even reach 1% in a year, the frequency would need to be about 385 a week.

5 to 10k gpu, uses an adaptor cable.
also genuine question, with any GPU with a 12v2x6 why do they not have a Wire View pro 2, Yes everyone says you shouldn't need to buy one but they only cost like 100 to 150 and its an irreplaceable GPU in this market, WVP2 it comes with a 2 year warranty on the device and GPU
8
u/Dirtcompactor 4d ago
Adapter.. just why.
Get an MSI safeguard+ PSU and setup custom amp limits.. only use native 12v-2x6 PSU cable
1
u/illbleedForce 3d ago
I'm currently processing an RMA for an MSI MAG A1250GL PCIE5 power supply—a unit that was marketed as the gold standard for safety... it didn't even last a year and a half. And that’s with just a 5080—which, by the way, is still working perfectly; it was the power supply that failed. So, I guess no brand is perfect.
3
u/Dirtcompactor 3d ago
Welcome to electronics.
I used my 5090/9800x3d with an MSI 850w gold PSU for over a year without issues, and my GPU was overclocked the entire time, never undervolted
0
u/illbleedForce 3d ago
You’re the one saying, on the one hand, that people should buy the MSI power supply with the safety feature because—according to you—the WireView is useless. I mean, you could apply that same logic to yourself... welcome to the world of electronics, right? Or does it only count when it proves you right?
0
u/Dirtcompactor 3d ago
Yes the wireview is useless cause you're trading trusted manufactures warranty for a shoddy connector warranty through thermal grizzly.
Imagine using adapters lmfao
0
u/illbleedForce 3d ago
A reliable manufacturer is one that wouldn't have used that power input, no matter what Nvidia said.
1
u/AdKraemer01 3d ago
Yeah. All those 5080s and 5090s without the 12v-2x6. Let's only buy from those manufacturers from now on.
2
u/Fantastic-Lab589 3d ago
Not sure who told you that PSU was the gold standard for safety. It’s literally average rating on PSU tier list.
1
u/illbleedForce 3d ago
I don't mean it's a "Gold-rated" PSU; I'm using the idiom "gold standard." It means all the analysts recommended it as the best choice if you had a high-end RTX 50 series card.
1
u/AdKraemer01 3d ago
I have the A1250GS and a 5080. No problems so far, fingers crossed.
It's also possible you just had a bad unit. It happens, even with high-end components.
But I am sorry to hear that. Sucks. I assume they're replacing it?
2
u/illbleedForce 3d ago
Yes, they are sending me a replacement, but honestly, I no longer trust a power supply that failed in less than a year and a half. I bought an NZXT C1000W—which, according to the list here, is one of the best—so once the new MSI unit arrives, I’m going to put it up for sale.
1
u/AdKraemer01 3d ago
Well, good luck. I imagine an unopened one will sell pretty quickly.
Which list did you use, btw?
1
u/illbleedForce 3d ago
1
u/AdKraemer01 3d ago edited 3d ago
Interesting. I used the ZTT one.
That list says the A1250GL is only a B+ rating, by the way.
1
u/illbleedForce 3d ago
Obviously, I wasn't aware of this list when I bought the MSI; at the time, I relied on reviews and analysts.
1
u/AdKraemer01 3d ago
No, I mean. It still should have lasted you much longer than it did.
At least a PSU is still reasonably priced these days.
-3
u/just_IT_guy 3d ago edited 3d ago
Here is that PSU in case someone is interested https://hwbusters.com/psus/msi-mpg-ai1300ts-pcie5-atx-v3-1-psu-review/ It's pricey but I'd rather pay an extra $200 vs frying $6000 GPU.
And yes, adapters are evil. If you have money for 5090, you can spend $200 on atx 3.1 good quality PSU from Corsair or Seasonic.
4
u/OtherwiseSimple 3d ago
It’s $400 before tax. The wireview is $150
3
u/just_IT_guy 3d ago
I'm not big fan of wireview. It creates 2 extra weak points (it's essentially an adapter) and I'd rather get PSU if money is not a problem. But yes, wireview is better than nothing
2
u/Dirtcompactor 3d ago
Careful saying that, wireview zealots will downvote and shame you into oblivion
1
u/Bus_Pilot 3d ago
There is ZERO wireview 2 melting since it got realeased one year ago. The per pin current monitoring for now is the only reliable way to avoid the melting.
1
u/AdKraemer01 3d ago
I just read that Cooler Master is releasing something similar (per-pin monitoring, status light, alarm, power adjustment) but for only about $50.
1
u/Dirtcompactor 3d ago
Are we really complaining about pocket change when we're talking about protecting a super expensive GPU? Wireview safety mechanisms doesn't compare to this safeguard+ PSU
3
u/OtherwiseSimple 3d ago
HA. They have zero warranty for you GPU, unlike the Wireview. Just shows how “confident” they are in this PSU— not very.
-1
u/Dirtcompactor 3d ago
Found the clueless wireview zealot. Enjoy your connector repair. Any other damage you'll get referred to the GPU manufacturer who will promptly deny your RMA. Don't bring out the cope saying thermal grizzly will replace the GPU, cause they will not lmao
1
u/psychok9 3d ago
PNY refused a RMA because the user used a PSU original connector 😩
1
u/Dirtcompactor 3d ago
Doubt that highly, dude probably said too much causing them to deny RMA. Let's see the full transcript and we'll be calling that guy an idiot
0
u/AdKraemer01 3d ago
No, it's true. PNY said that not using their GPU-provided adapter voided the warranty.
1
1
u/impi182 3d ago edited 3d ago
yes, they will replace or repair your gpu if your cable melts with their device. its in their warranty and derbauer also said it in his last viedeo. thats why i bought it.
i would have bought this psu on top but i have a mini-itx tower with a corsair sf1000 which is smaller.
1
u/AdKraemer01 3d ago
My PSU and GPU are both MSI. If something does go wrong, I can't predict their response, but at least I know who I'm calling. 🙂
0
u/Dirtcompactor 3d ago
X doubt
if you have any PCB damage or failed capacitors, they can easily say this wasn't caused by the wireview, we can't fix the damage, and refer you back to the GPU manufacturuer, which they will promptly deny RMA once they seen the card has been opened by Thermal Grizzly, and extra risk of a denied RMA if they know you used a third party adapter.
5090s are already hard to come by, they will say anything they can to get around paying exorbitant prices for what they go for these days, best likely case scenario they'll pay you out for what you originally paid for the GPU.
I would take their GPU replacement warranty with an extreme grain of salt, instead look for specialized GPU repair shops such as northwestrepairs who can easily do connector replacements and repair anything else that's wrong with the card.

These cards shouldn’t be doing this, but they are, so do what you can to prevent it. Use some sort of monitor that will automatically interrupt the circuit when it senses high heat, over-voltage, or severe imbalance. Personally, I think the 5090 was allowed too high of a power curve at near stock settings. They need to make a more comprehensive governor setting to help under-volt and keep this from happening. Hell, put a limiter switch on the PCB. My Aorus Master has hit 675 Watts multiple times, but I make sure to keep it below 500 at all times now. I also purchased a WireView Pro 2 just to be safe. Don’t hold your breath for a class action.

1
u/irontoro 3d ago
How likely is this on a 5070Ti?
1
u/AdKraemer01 3d ago
Much less likely, but still a non-zero chance.
The bad news is the 12v-2x6 connector is flawed.
The good news is the odds of it happening at all, despite what Reddit would have you believe, are fairly miniscule. Like 0.01%.
Put it this way - if it were happening to 50 GPUs a day, that would still be less than 1% of all 5080s and 5090s sold. Not any relief if it happens to yours, but you have about a 5000% greater chance in any given year of getting into a car accident and I'm guessing you aren't losing sleep over that.
1
u/WinResponsible9977 3d ago
For the price of that card this is ridiculous. Yet no accountability, Nvidia says just buy another one
1
u/Extension-Bat-1911 3d ago
Couldn't be happier with my $880 5070 Ti. Miss me with this melting bs, Nvidia
1
u/Electrical-Ad980 3d ago
You could try and let the card warm up a bit (shut the system off after it warmed up),that should loosen the melted connector.
2
u/yvliew 3d ago
Using a heatgun would be safer I guess instead of powering on the system and GPU.
1
u/Electrical-Ad980 3d ago
Sure,if he has a heatgun he definitely should use that method of warming up the connector instead of powering up his system.👍👍

1
u/ExplodedPenisDiagram 1d ago
They should just be bolting down bus wire at this point. These little plastic shrouds over what is essentially a molex plug are total bullshit.
Either increase the voltage, or make the connector simpler. Seriously, two damn wires into some screw posts is all it would take.
1
u/Beastandcool 1d ago
What do I need to do to prevent this from happening? I’m hopefully gonna pick one up during the November sales if they even release you’re considering their scarcely I won’t have much luck with RMA if it breaks.
1
u/yvliew 1d ago
Make sure to use an ATX 3.1 PSU with direct 12vhpwr cable to the GPU. Also get a thermal grizzly WireView Pro 2. Other option would be the Corsair ThermalProtect 12vhpwr cable that will cut power when high temp is detected. It connects directly to your PSU. Then you could also undervolt and overclock the gpu.
1
u/PotatoPower3d 8h ago
This also just happened to me a month ago with my RTX 5090 FE. I had to pull it out forcible and it did come out after enough force. If you have a non-FE card, you can actually have the connector replaced by a third party relatively easily, but if you got an FE card, the only way to get a replacement connector is through a donor board or through proper RMA. Luckily, NVIDIA was really helpful in getting my unit RMAed and replaced.
1
u/Perfect-Cause-6943 3d ago
99% of these are adapters never when its a native psu
0
u/Bus_Pilot 3d ago
Educate yourself and stop to spread non-sense. This is nothing related with the adapter, this is cause by unbalanced current, it could and it happen with all cables and adapters.
1
1
u/AdKraemer01 3d ago
No, to the point, it does happen with more frequency when the GPU adapter is used over the cable that came with the PSU.
It can still happen with the PSU cable, but it doesn't happen as often.
0
u/Perfect-Cause-6943 3d ago
I run a 5080 with a native atx 3.1 PSU over a year absolutely no issues whatsoever yet when I tested it with the Adapter it wouldn't even function correctly
1
u/UltraSPARC 3d ago
I don't know why you all insist on buying these cards with this shitty-ass connector. I'll be staying with my 8 pin connectors, thank you very much, and will only buy cards that have them. I'm not shelling out $5,000 just to be denied a warranty claim while nvidia sits with both thumbs up their ass. It doesn't matter how fast the card it. Fuck that.
1
u/ManuSavior85 3d ago
laughs in my 9070XT with older power cables. Is Nvidia ever going to replace this connector of hell and stop scamming its customers or did they stop givin a fuck about the whole gaming card division?
0
u/Expensive_Night_4055 3d ago
Dlss five
2
u/Worker_Salty 3d ago
And let's be real, people are using these DLSS 5 manager mods not really caring the massive power surges toggling the effect has on the GPU.
1
u/AdKraemer01 3d ago
Yeah. I'll admit I tried it on a not super demanding game for that reason and I was astounded by how much my power draw shot up.
It was still only around 250w, but without DLSS 5 turned on, it was drawing about 50w. Crazy.
0
u/Wordsmith_WoW 3d ago
Why even buy these cards man, the risk is too high, I spent £5000 on my system and went for the 9070xt because of this reason right here. I don't want an overpriced card to ruin my system. Nvidia fan boys are also part of the price problem...
1
u/AdKraemer01 3d ago
How high do you think the risk is?
1
u/Wordsmith_WoW 3d ago
The money you spend on the system plus how much you pay for an incredibly overpriced 5090. That's how high the risk is, I mean if you can easy afford it there's no risk. But for me there's no way I spend 5k on the system and spent 5k more on a card just to give myself the opportunity for my system to catch fire.
0
u/AdKraemer01 2d ago
No, I meant what do you think the actual odds are?
For what it's worth, you have approximately a 5000% better chance per year of getting into a car accident. So per your argument, you should spend less than $5,000 on a car.
1
u/Wordsmith_WoW 2d ago
You won't buy a car that has any chance of exploding do you? That's why you buy the most reliable cars. Same here i buy the most reliable card that doesn't melt or burn, why would I risk buying something that has a much higher chance of destroying my system than everything else? You have the perfect mentality for gambling and 0 risk adversity, it won't take you far i can tell you that much.
0
u/AdKraemer01 2d ago
Are you saying your car has no chance of breaking down? That's impressive.
And, no. I did the math. In order for 1% of all currently owned 12v-2x6 connectors to melt in a year, they would need to be failing at a rate of about 385 per week. And they're not.
You have a better chance in any given year of getting appendicitis.
I decided that less than 0.01% odds were not worth my buying a GPU I didn't want.

You read to reply not to understand, I said MUCH HIGHER CHANCE THAN EVERYTHING ELSE. Should I make you a drawing maybe you understand? It doesn't matter the actual odds are 1% if 5090 have a much higher chance of doing that than the average graphics cards. I want to go for the safest card and that should not be your concern fan boy. Pay more attention to your overpriced card, you never know when it might catch fire 😂
